We decided it was finally time to get some data down to the boat dock. So we used a combination of Ubiquiti NanoBeams and Unifi Access Points & Switches to create a wireless point to point link between our house and the dock. This allows us to have 300 megabit data capacity at the boat dock for security cameras and more! Our devices went from zero bars to full bars! It was glorious!

BTW being by water i would have used a GFI plug for heavy humidity and possible salt corrosion on your plastic box.. Just a safety for a ya never know moment.
The main breaker is already GFCI.

Always have a small drain hole in the "waterproof" box, as soon as you get some condensation in there it will collect over time! 😁👍
Considering the access point is on the bottom, that will probably function as the drain 😬

Synology DS1621+ is very nice! I just wish the Surveillance Station camera licenses were cheaper.
That pump looks like it could use some love. I see the conduit fitting is not connected to the sharp 90 pull elbow anymore.
Hahaha! Yes. My list of things I need to do is never ending. It's actually broken clean off.
Ex pool tech, that pump is on its way out, once the housing gets to be that bad the bearings aren’t too far behind it.

Absolutely agree about Axis cameras. I have a M31 series on my house, so much better than Dahua stuff I also have.
That said, Dahua is still a great option for the price and out performances Reolink at night vision.
That is some pretty cool gear. Neat installation too. I think a Sonos weatherproof speaker might be possible now that you have Wifi.
So now you need an automated sunscreen on the top of the deck with a hammock with a motor to control the rocking and a misting device for summer heat. Beautiful place, can’t wait for the rest.
Oh wow that's a really cool dock, never seen these kind of docks before, i imagine they're mainly found in the US and not in Europe.

I have a love hate relationship with Synology. I have a pair of RS2818RP, and every now and then one of them just freezes. Still responds to ping, but not SSH or via the Web GUI. When they work they're pretty slick, but I don't know if I'll buy another one when the time comes.
Pretty cool. I was thinking about doing Synology w/ Surveillance station w/ VPN at my house, but landed on Blue Iris w/ Stunnel instead. Pros and cons of everything I suppose. You have a very clean set up though. Nicely done.

10:01 Look at that beautiful fake typing!! Its silver screen worthy!! Love the install. What model of Axis did you choose and why. Also I love that the NVR is built into the Synology box I had no clue and I have been looking for a NVR that didn't cost an arm and a leg or running software on Windows. Synology will make this a breeze and I can also run my Plex server off this and retire my Apple Mini! What settings do you normally use for your cameras like record for 7 days then overwrite or do you give it 10 GB then overwrite once that space is used?

I would recommend spending the extra couple of pennies and buy the proper sealtight connectors for the sealtight hose. That, along with O-rings where you enter the PVC box, will guarantee both a solid mechanical connection and less chance of moisture getting inside the enclosure.
What do you mean? I've never seen any special connectors for glue in applications. Certainly there are sealtite to screw in. Can you point me to some pictures?
Yes, the threaded style with an O-ring, is what you need to use. PVC cement won't bond properly to the rubber outer jacket of the sealtite hose. You can safely run the wires free air to the receptacle, being it is inside the 12 by 12 enclosure, or put a threaded female coupling on the end of the sealtite connector and put a short piece of PVC conduit into the receptacle's box.
Can you link a picture of one of these?
Just out of curiosity, with that being outdoor (even in the box), wouldn't a GFCI been a better option than a standard outlet? I'm no electrician, just someone who's learning stuff as I go so if I'm totally off base, my bad!
It has GCFI at the breaker already.
@@TheGeekPub This is because most jurisdictions require the entire dock to be under GFCI. It is much easier to just have breaker be the GFCI rather than the outlets. Great work on this project! Loved it!

Curious why you choose Axis cameras over Ubiquiti since you've already got the Ubiquiti infrastructure.
Ubiquiti cams only work with ubiquiti. You're locked in. And they're not near as good as AXIS either. UI cams are a worst of both worlds choice.
I would have just used 2 UAP-AC-M's for a bridge and your wifi. You will loose a lot of wifi range having your ap pointed at the ground.

The UniFi Switch supports passive 24v it needs to be enabled on the port from the UniFi Controller
I don't believe that's the case. But I'd be thrilled if you could prove me wrong!!!
@@TheGeekPub Oh I somehow mixed something up here, this switch does not, I have my modem powered through passive 24v but I forgot it uses a brick in the back, it was the aircube I have which I can set to provide 24v passive, there was my mistake
Ubiquiti actually makes an 802.1af to passive 24v POE adapter which would have allowed you to get rid of that second POE brick: part # INS‑3AF‑I‑G

My only suggestion is it could’ve used some drip loops on the cables that are exposed the rain. Love your set up at home, wish I had something like that.

Using a 10km+ nanobeam for a few dozen meters distance... wow. A powerline adapter woulde've been soo much cheaper.

@@TheGeekPub Myself, I use the UAP-AC-M for 60m sector coverage and it works flawlessly as an AP. The speeds are over 50mbps on wifi at @45m. At ~70m is struggling. With stock antennas.

You can configure the switch to do the passive 24V you just have to select it as the port option.

Hi that box is great. Is there not a need for ventilation or cooling? Also, if it could fit would the AP be better inside (even though outdoor rated) the box for added protection and the minimal WiFi coverage needed? Thank you for the great video.
Sweet Jesus, the entire place is landscaped and groomed to within an inch of it's life. I'll bet it was such a beautiful place before all the people moved in.

How good/poor is signal reception on top of the deck? I mean - from the UAP point of view (and the way how you've mounted it) you are "behind" it.

That Axis camera may be good, but at $400 it's not just expensive, it's kind of nuts.
Well, they didn't used to be $400. They used to be $250, pre COVID.
Have to ask.... Why not run ethernet or fiber to the dock instead of the NanoBeams? They are cool, for sure, but it's another thing to break.
Cost. Digging up the yard, 100+ year old tree roots, and concrete is non-starter.

So the nanobeam beams it's internet to the dock nanobeam from the modem inside the house?
If youre not needing anything complex and just want a wireless ethernet cable basically, just set them up in bridge mode, dhcp enabled and plug the AP into your router or switch.
If you use the AC Gen2 like he did, you can take advantage of the 2nd port on the station radio for POE out to a 24v passive POE wifi access point. May need to add the 2nd port to Bridge0 so it pulls dhcp from same pool as your radios.
Lots of cool stuff you can do with nanobeams if you want to take the time to mess around with them. For example, setting the station radio to router mode and have it act as a router. Has NAT, port forwarding, etc.
Since you have power on the dock, did you try powerline ethernet adapters?
No. Because they're not on the same panel or even meter.
Wouldn’t it be easier to just run a outdoor rated Ethernet cable to the dock and install a access point?
I guess if you think busting concrete and 100+ year old tree roots is easier.
What level of RAID are you using on the Synology?
I use Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR). It is more flexible than other types.

I have a small building I have been trying to bring network over to from the main unit but even string fiber up for just ~30 feet seems like too much work. I see these are quite cheap. I just wonder if 100mb variant will be enough to carry 2-3 1080p security cameras.

My only issue with Axis is their support was poor. We had several of their cameras at my old job and they refused to update their wireless cameras to update it to wpa2 even though it was a year or 2 old at the time. I ended up having to hard wire them as a result and I still think of that every time I see them. Solid cameras as they ran for 5+ years but there is nothing i hate more than planned obsolescence.

Why do americans have so much obsession for security cameras? Is housebreaking that common in USA?
Three times in the 8 years here we had a rash of car thefts on our street. My wife's car was broken into all 3 times and mine twice. I also had tools and a window A/C unit stolen from my garage (surrounded by a 6' privacy fence). Then our neighbor started tormenting our dogs so I needed proof for the police. We also live right next to a park and when there are events there are thousands of people who walk by our house. I've had our fence, yard, landscaping and side of the house vandalized.

Because the Nanobeam requires passive PoE, not active. Different protocol. Different voltage.
Code valuation did not use connector on the liquid tight into the box.

Sorry, but you have used indoor access point. Either put it inside that weather proof box or get Ubiquity Flex series, which are designed to be used outside

Nope. The Unifi is outdoor weather rated.

I have to strongly disagree with the choice of Axis cameras. I work directly with camera installs for work as a Deployment Support Agent, and prior to that I was supporting a large retailer who had nearly exclusively Axis products as their security system. TBF, they crash a lot, their video quality is terrible, and their reparability is poor. If I were to suggest a different product, I would choose either Hanwa / Techwin cameras over Axis. Personally though, I would probably go for more consumer sided Wyze cameras as they are cheaper, efficient, and some models are even battery powered with wifi. Take that suggestion as you wish though.

Hanwha is grade A Chinesium. That's a good grade for Chinesium. But I don't think it's better than axis.
Wyze, Reolink, Swann, Lorex and all the other Costco stuff is just good at being cheap. Nothing good about the actual quality of the video.
Dahua, Hikvision, Uniview and Hanwha are great for mid range cameras and certainly offer cameras with better specifications than Axis for their lower price.
Ultimate all-round quality still comes down to Axis and Avigilon, made with fa better attention to detail and just work.

I have the same nanobeams shooting network connectivity to my detached shop building....a little overkill probably ( should have run cat5 with the buried power lines...whoops), but for a non-IT guy, I was proud to figure it all out!
Without special grounding and isolation equipment, buried copper Ethernet is a disaster waiting to happen. The first thunderstorm to roll through will likely fry everything. If you need wired, the route to go is fiber. Ask me how I know. :-)
