I know what this is because I live in ikaria. It is around 150 to 200 years old and it was a water mill which was used to make flour. The wall was continuing from the top to the bottom and water was flowing in it.
That makes a lot of sense.

Yah, sounds right, but its not built by the same beings that built the megalithic ruins in the rest of the video ( see the construction difference).

It may have been windmill because Greece doesn't get much rain but plenty of wind on coast, but who knows, maybe not.
Drakanos Tower. One of the best preserved examples of Athenian military watchtowers from the Hellenistic period, Drakano Fortress and its fortifications were built during the time of Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC.br>
This 44 foot high limestone tower served as an observation point for Aegean Sea traffic sailing the channel between Ikaria and Samos.
The tower was part of a larger garrison and eventual Ikarian city that was noted for its wine production. In 1827 the tower was damaged by Greek naval forces who used it for target practice. Near the tower stands the solitary Church of St. Georgis, and below the church is the remote sandy beach of St. Georgis. Access to Drakano is via a dirt road leading from the seaside village of Faros. The road ends where a footpath begins, and visitors must then hike about 15 minutes north to the fortress area.

There is always a local historian or sleuth who is willing to share their stories with curious strangers. Gabriel, you don't seem to reach out for the locals when you are travelling around small villages and places not very well known. If you actually do reach out, you hardly show it. Locals are always great sources of information.

I had a great time on Ikaria in March 2022. I explored the island on foot and also rented a scooter. I also stayed in a mountain stonehouse.

Hi Gabriel, Fascinating stuff it appears the word Farros which is the name of a Village on the Island you were at is a wheat or grain. Farro is a high-fiber, high-protein whole-grain wheat that's similar in appearance to barley, although it's slightly larger and more oblong. Like barley, it has a chewy texture and nutty flavor. It can be used in a variety of dishes like soups, salads, and even breakfast dishes. This is the importance of the Island as a food source.
Faros is lighthouse in Greek. Comes from the name of the island where Alexandria's lighthouse in Egypt was placed

Although a Greek , never been to Ikaria. It looks like an uploading from mining construction to the sea. It looks very solid, and that's unusual. Also it;s not very old, probably 100 - 150 or 200 years old the most.

Hello good sir, love your videos, discovered your channel a few days ago. Nice content.. Since my Mother comes from Fournoi (a small island near Ikaria and Samos)it would be nice if you visited that place also, its small but beautiful in a wild way.

To me it looks like it was some sort of small aqueduct system that then feeds into a cistern. But the arched entrances on the bottom of the round tower kinda shoot that theory out, unless that was just the entrance and there used to be a ceiling that helped keep the water in the upper half of the tower.
That or it was like you were saying, part of a larger system of buildings that went further up the hill relating to the Church

It is a fun adventure with you, Gabriel, that attracts us with the excitement and the fun that exists, I felt fear when you were climbing alone where there is no one, why most of the parts of these islands are deserted and there is no interest in them even though they are so beautiful. The music was beautiful. Thank you and waiting for the next episode .
The round structure that looks like a castle is probably a “Fliktoria”. A warning tower that used fire to warn the city (through a chain of other similar towers) of incoming pirates or intruders
If I remember well in the Fliktories there was also a kind of water tank that had a number of text messages in the different levels of it's walls so that with the first fire signal the guard had to to start releasing water from the tank and with the second signal seal the tank so that the water level would align with the corresponding message transmitted by the first tower. Pretty sophisticated system!
One slight correction.It is Fryktories(Phryctoriae) and not Fliktories...
Gabriel you should not leave Greece next destinations Samos, Lesbos and Limnos there is so much to explore there! Think about it especially Lesbos and Limnos my home island!
Ιt is a Water-Tower for a water mill. Usually only the Water-Towers survive in time after the end of the function. The arch is supporting the channel which brings the water to the mouth of the conical vertical funnel (fluim) of the tower leading the water with vehemence to the tirl. I would date it to the 16th-17th century.

Drakano tower, was the highest tower of the acropolis that you were at. Was built around 2300 years ago, approximately during grade alexander’s era. Except of watch tower it was a : “friktoría”. That means that it belonged to a very long group of towers that were transmitting messages, made of distict fire or smoke types. Were able to send a message from persia to macedonia relatively very fast. Each friktoria was visible from the previous and the next one.😉

The tower site near the end of the video seems like a megalithic site, big blocks, cyclopean walls, those are the truly mysterious ruins, also found in other parts of the Mediterranean like Alatri in Italy. God only knows who the builders were.

Paros and Naxos would be good islands to look into.
Indeed. Naxos, Paros, Antiparos and Koufonissi are close enough for a day trip. However day trips with a ferry are not feasible for many islands, it depends on the timetables. Spring is low season and you'll have less choice of routes. You can do day trips with small boats, that carry a handful of passengers and usually take you around the beaches of neighbouring islands, but again maybe they won't be operating in spring. Another choice, to avoid the to and fro, is island hopping, which most people do. Tinos and Syros, together with the above, could be a choice for that. They are relatively quiet, without the crazy nightlife, and have good connections. Syros is different than the other Cyclades, in that it has a neoclassical town and not many beaches. Tinos has quite a few hilltop villages and a choice of beaches. You'll probably need a car to get around on the islands (except the small Koufonissi), as the buses can be a hassle and some lines don't operate during the low season. Late spring is a very good season, you'll avoid the insane crowds, pay less, have good weather and avoid the heatwaves of summer. They can be debilitating, especially for seniors. With 39°C it is not a good idea to roast on the beach or walk around at midday!

From your map you appear to be reasonably close to Paralia Therma famous amongst many on the island for their hot springs. These were sacred places, it may be that you discovered a ruined aqueduct which delivered hot water to a villa or temple long having been eroded into the sea.
More beaches than you can shake a stick at!
This was likely for farm fields. They would pipe the water to as close as possible to the crops. My guess because you see this in Japan.

The first one is a water mill. Tens like that are located all over the island. They were used until the middle 20th century. Where you were there is a second one just above the one you were. Both belong to the monastery, who’s church you were looking at. Water mills are preindustrial machines. Were being built all the way from antiquity to 20th century, along with windmills

Wild guess - could be a pumping station to get water from the ocean to the mountains, but structures no longer complete.
Aqueduct and cisterns system. Not ancient you can tell from the size and the shape of the stones. Likely Byzantine/eastern roman. I guess medieval. Makes sense to collect the water that flows in streams from the mountains and during rain, in lower elevations.

Love your channel. I know it’s your thing to go to off the forbidden paths when it comes to Greek island’s. You need to show the night life too. What is there yo do at night? Not clubbing, walk at night if there’s a life!
looks like ''water way" for me ,there are 2 explanations . 1st is for a mile 2nd is for a ''hamam' first option is probably the correct. in second option is to carry Ikarias therapy water to a kind of baths near the beach.. [then it has to have another construction under this . The only sure is that a earthquake destroyed the building. There is an iron "filter "" in the water way as it seams.. its maybe to stop stones come to the final end. You can ask locals...there must be a myth for it.. ask some because you can have different answers for sure. Enjoy Greece as much you can. There are many things to see and learn. Same constructions in huge size you can find in south Europe made by the Romans made for carying water to their towns
I know they came much later than any ancient Greek construction, but these make me think of the old Roman aqueducts they built for water accessibility. Going off that thought, it makes me wonder if they (the Roman’s) took inspiration from the Greeks in this instance. Leads me to wonder if this is for some kind of water source or something related to water.
For me it is a Tower for ring Bells....you find similar Constructions on Ikaria. I think it was a Part of A Monastery which is abonded by Earthquake or other Reasons.
Maybe it lifted up water with an Archimedes screw since it is near the sea.
I can definitively say it is the thing from 2001 Space Odyssey, The Who's Next Cover and the Led Zeppelin record Presence. Other than that, can't help you.
It could be older than 19th century. The metal gate could have been put in during that time but the whole structure looks older in my opinion. Also looks like the right part collapsed a bit and lost the keystone in the center?

I suspect it was a part of some fort/castle and within it it may have had an aqueduct or perhaps it was where soldier were stationed to look for any potential invasion.

Yes. It's named after the myth. Apparently it was near Ikaria that Icarus fell into the water and drowned.

Can't help about the arch unfortunately. The second building opposite of the abandoned driving school bus is an old mine, judging from the construction of parts of it, it must be from the late 19th century. It would be nice to have a closer look but it's best left to people familiar with such activities as it can be dangerous.
