you should make a serie about this!! not only ancient mythological monsters, but also representations of goddesses and gods of ancient mythology and stuff like that! I love this Medusa so much!! Jazza, you are so talented!
Yes please. @Jazza we just finished watching the new series of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. My brain lives there right now, your video couldn’t come at a better time.
Yesss… do the hydra, many people misrepresent what that looked like, thinking it grew two heads when one was cut off, while the more accurate version of the myth stated it just always regrew its heads, perpetually having nine heads at all times.
"That's how you know you're onto something good; You're afraid to continue" Jazza out here spitting wisdom! As a creative person myself I felt that in my SOUL.
Except that original Medusa had nothing to do with Poseidon. That rendition of the story came later. Original Medusa was already a born Gorgon hideous mother of monsters.
Classical Historian here! Love the video so much, can’t wait to share it with my coworkers and friends. You’ve captured Medusa so perfectly here! Depictions of Medusa and the other Gorgons are supposed to ward away evil of all sorts, with their appearance supposed to be so scary that even evil itself is afraid of them. I think you captured the fear of Medusa so well! Amazing work.
Have you ever watched Jon solo? He goes into historical characters, gods and fairytale and tells the true stories accurately. He's good for people interested in history
This depiction of Medusa makes the most sense. If you make a god jealous they aren’t just gonna turn your hair into snakes. They’re gonna make you a grotesque ogre with snakes for hair.
If you have the ability to turn someone to stone because they look at you it does make more sense that it’s because they are the most “beautiful”. Using “lust” as the sin. I guess it’s human nature to stare at someone that’s considered “most” beautiful or “most” ugly.
Apart from the yassification of Medusa, her entire story also changed in Roman times: it was Ovid who decided to make her a victim of Poseidon's asssault and Athena's punishment. In the early Greek versions, Medusa was a monster from the very beginning. She was the only mortal gorgon but compensated for that with her deadly gaze.
@@zakoohakoo9541 the gorgonites specifically were the three sisters, but similar to the cyclopes if there were more, or children thereof etc, they would be named for them and be called gorgonites too. So a gorgon is most likely one of the three but doesn't have to be if you do not wish it.
Dude, this was insane. The shaping of the snakes on the back of her head was barely mentioned but was incredibly impressive like that was my favourite part of the whole thing, I think. And the textures on everything were just perfect and I really liked seeing the creative ways to get the skin and snakes done. I normally never comment but this was just done insanely well, fair play! :D
Finally an interpretation where she is as ugly as she was supposed to be! In the original Greek myth she was always a monster, had two other siblings as well. Athena couldn’t do anything much to Poseidon, but she transformed Medusa into a monster midway through their….dance. Poseidon was freaked out when he realized what happened and ran off

Personally I like Ovid's version of the myth. If I remember correctly, all Medusa wanted was to be left alone. But Athena's punishment didn't end with turning her into a monster that nobody can ever look at. The goddess made sure that every schmuck with dreams of glory will bother her.

Medusa is one of my favourite characters - you've done a stunning job. Poor thing that was one hell of a curse, not her fault at all as she was assaulted, no wonder she's so furious. Thank you so much for choosing the amazing Gorgon as your subject. 👋🏼🏴
Actually she was a titan, just as her sisters and parents. I think she found those snake tales and fangs pretty cool (and no, an Olympian couldn't just turn a titan into something lol)
@@nilsfaerie584, of course your right, she was a Titan 👍🏼. Good point, nobody knows... She might have been annoyed at the curse, but as you say, could have been absolutely digging 'the accessories' 😂
Fantastic! Greek mythology can be sooo cool and you brought it to life. The Hydra of Lerna would be great project: the snake/dragon like water monster with multiple and newborn heads.
I love this series for so many reasons, but especially because you're likely inspiring a lot of people to go back and read and experience old texts / ancient histories / etc. I love new media that is inspired by and hearkens back to the things that came before. It all adds to the grand mythos in a way.
I love the intermediate stages of sculpture. Like, I KNOW it's going to be badass when complete, but the expression on that thing around 6:20 is absolutely hilarious. 😂
True to the source material, I'm here for it!! There's too little of that nowadays. This also gives me a call back to the stopmotion Medusa in Hollywood classic cinema for some reason, which is awesome!
My dad's an illustrator and has been assigned the Medusa myth a few times. He's always leaned into the "monstrous" interpretation, but nowhere near this! Freaking cool!
As I've stated before, I love it when you draw characters as envisioned by authors. I read a lot of Greek and Roman gods stories when young envisioning them in my head. They never seemed to correspond with movie interpretation. I love anything you do in this area and am completely happy just with the drawings. I know doing the sculptures takes a significant amount of time. I love them as well. But if the time isn't there, I still love and appreciate the drawings. Thank you, Jazza.
I am so glad you decided to paint this one. This was a delight to watch. This perfectly captures Medusa. I just would have liked more snakes for her hair but I understand how taxing and complicated just this lot would have been. And I think the nrow was a little too masculine. But other than that, she was amazing. Please keep them coming. I crave for this kind of creative content on youtube. More more more! Please do a Jorogumo
Jazza, you took it long enough!! This looks amazing!!! Please continue painting your creations!! Glad I've been seeing your progress from a small room in a shed to this great studio!!! Keep on keeping on!!!!

I've been watching all your videos for a long time now and this might be one of my favorites. Especially overcoming the weather and power outage the way you did.

I'm a massive Greek myth nerd, and it always annoyed me (even as a child) when artists drew Medusa as beautiful. Thanks for giving us a properly scary Medusa!
YES Oh my god! I can´t express how much I love this! Using the proper ancient sources as reference and shouting out smaller creators is both *chefs kiss* When I saw your last Tolkien video, it became my favourite of yours, but now it´s this one, it´s so fucking good, please keep up the good work!
This is really amazing I love the way that you painted her and bought her to life as she should have been. I would also love to see you do either Scylla, Charybdis or Echidna.
First time I watched one of your videos was about 10 + years ago, you were very good. I was a graphics artist myself, just earing spare change on fiverr, it was cool to see other artists' works, even inspiring at times. But now I stumbled on your videos again after many years, I got bored with making art myself and instead I'm a programmer, but still enjoy art, and it's shocking to me how much you improved, you're the actual goat now.
This is so incredible! I love Medusa, and although I like the beautiful version in a lot of depictions, I do miss the originally described tusks which I always found a bit hard to imagine exactly. This sculpture is a great, life-like way to see her in her fully original form with the coloring you put effort into making authentic!
I've always enjoyed drawing but you've inspired me to try sculpting too. Your channel is super entertaining as well as instructive, thanks for these amazing videos! PS.: I already liked the sculpture in white, but I LOVED how it turned out after you painted it, those last steps really brought it to life!
I freaking love her! Oh Jazza, you don't know how great this is! I've been into mythology since I was a little kid, and when I was eight, my favourite uncle gave me a book called Gods, Men and Monsters from the Greek Myths, by Michael Francis Gibson. The front cover is Medusa and Perseus - and it's *that* Medusa. Monstrous Medusa with tusks and everything. That's the Medusa I grew up with. Even when I learned the Athena/Poseidon version of the myth, I conflated the two versions in my head, so that this is what she looked like after Athena cursed her. But everywhere, it's sexy Medusa you see. Your sculpture is *perfect* It actually made me a bit emotional. I went and got my extremely battered, 40 year old copy of GM&M to show my partner how perfectly you recreated the beautiful monster who captured my childhood imagination. I love her so much. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You are amazing, been following you since at least 8 years now, never been disapointed by your videos and your creations, always loved your energy and your talent (i know there is a lot of hardwork and years of struggles cause art is an hard path to follow and conquer), but you always manage to get trhough everything and end up with amazing pieces, just a huge respect towards you, just wanted to finally say how much i love your work and art, i am so happy to see what u became and hope you are doing great and your family aswell. Holy shit!! I have binged your videos recently and out of all of your impressive, skillfully-made creations, this is the one that made me audibly gasp. It turned out incredible with the paint and wet textures. Please do more mythological creatures!!
Love it! I think that coloring your monster gave it more depth and truly brought it to life! I can’t wait to see many more monsters to come. Something I think would be really cool would be to have a panoramic shot of all your monsters so far as at the end of your videos.
I love this Jazza! I would LOVE to see this as a full series! Sign me up for anything mythological! I love the way you create them by taking bits from all different images over time!
Got a suggestion for you! :D Two Descriptions of the same monster, one might go with either one. Older description: "Her voice is indeed but as the voice of a new-born whelp, but she herself is an evil monster, nor would anyone be glad at sight of her, no, not though it were a god that met her. Verily she has twelve feet, all misshapen, and six necks, exceeding long, and on each one an awful head, and therein three rows of teeth, thick and close, and full of black death. Up to her middle she is hidden in the hollow cave, but she holds her head out beyond the dread chasm, and fishes there, eagerly searching around the rock for dolphins and sea-dogs and whatever greater beast she may haply catch, such creatures as deep-moaning Amphitrite rears in multitudes past counting." and "Nay, row past with all thy might, and call upon Crataiis [a nymph of the sea], the mother of [the mystery monster], who bore her for a bane to mortals. Then will she keep her from darting forth again." - [very famous greek poet, telling you his name and his work would spoil things ;D] with an English Translation by A.T. Murray, PH.D. in two volumes. Cambridge, MA., Harvard University Press; London, William Heinemann, Ltd. 1919. More recent description, some centuries after the older one: "and on the other side two huge cliffs, and in one of them was [the mystery monster] a daughter of Crataeis and Trienus or Phorcus [all three of them are gods of the sea] with the face and breast of a woman, but from the flanks she had six heads and twelve feet of dogs." -Apollodorus, Epitome Sir James George Frazer, Ed. If you google the text-bits, you will find the name of said monster ;)
Cerberus!!!! I completely agree. He's been my favorite Greek myth since I was 4. I've owned any action figure or comic growing up. I'm bordering 40 now, and I no longer have my stuff. But seeing you sculpt him would be awesome. I'd love to see your interpretation!
Y’know, thinking about it, the only modern interpretation of Medusa I can think of off the top of my head that resembles this is the version of her from the original Kid Icarus. (There might be more, of course, but the more beautiful interpretation is obviously far more widespread.)

I absolutely love the statue. Especially the sharp contrast between the truely horrifing Face and the derpy Snakes. Like they try to tell you: Oh no, we are not the monsterious part on this creature ❤
I have to thank you jazza I lived and worked in london in construction but always had a passion with all kinds of art so I have been watching your videos for some time..but about 6months before covid I near lost my right hand in a work accident but after a lot of recovery and keep watching you I'm able to finally get back to it so thank you again jazza inspirational
Medusa is one of my favourite characters - you've done a stunning job. Poor thing that was one hell of a curse, not her fault at all as she was assaulted, no wonder she's so furious. Thank you so much for choosing the amazing Gorgon as your subject. 👋🏼🏴
This curse version is from the ROMAN writer Ovid, in the greek version from Hesiod Medusa was a monster since birth
Actually she was a titan, just as her sisters and parents. I think she found those snake tales and fangs pretty cool
(and no, an Olympian couldn't just turn a titan into something lol)
That is incredible! Congratulations on your creation!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE GREEK MYTHOLOGY AND CREATURES!!! You should totally do more of these sculptures!!!
Loved this video. The whole irony of working on a Medusa piece with the lights going out too!
The fact the power went off but you made sure the show still went on is immaculate dedication ❤I’m intrigued
She's awesome. Cerberus would be truly awesome as well. Thanks!
You are such a creative powerhouse, Jazza! What an amazing masterpiece-- the faithfulness to classical interpretations and incredible attention to detail sets it apart.
I've been watching all your videos for a long time now and this might be one of my favorites. Especially overcoming the weather and power outage the way you did.
You should make a historically accurate mermaid next
Way to go! The paint job was perfect. Best part was seeing your excitement for a job well done. Oh and extra awesome working through the storm.
not gonna lie this is one of the best sculptures u have made lately. like im genuinely so impressed. u did such a good job. also the video was very entertaining as well. loving what jazza and his team has been making lately, keep up the good work 🔥
jazza that sculpture is mad impressive‼️you never cease to amaze me
I'm a massive Greek myth nerd, and it always annoyed me (even as a child) when artists drew Medusa as beautiful. Thanks for giving us a properly scary Medusa!
She was supposed to keep her beauty
The fact that jazza just keep on working through a storm is really impressive. Great work!
I love how derpy the snakes faces look! 😂
It gives me 🦕vibes for the heads, haha.
Jazza never ceases to amaze me!❤
The photo you show here is not Medusa this is Gorgo the original Gorgon on Zeus's shield 1:55
A true artist never lets anything stop them, even a vast and terrible storm cutting out all the lights!
Bet you didn’t know Jazza knew exactly what your mum looks like.
😂 your not funny that's probably what your mum looks like
How?
YES Oh my god! I can´t express how much I love this! Using the proper ancient sources as reference and shouting out smaller creators is both *chefs kiss*
When I saw your last Tolkien video, it became my favourite of yours, but now it´s this one, it´s so fucking good, please keep up the good work!
who gave you permission to use my mother-in-law for your sculpture?
I did
That’s wild 🤣
😂😂
Bro has anacondas instead of hair cuz sankee are first
Underrated :)
AMAZING! Great work Jazza, this is one of the best videos you have made for a long time!
Awesome pls more of IT .i Love how you did the real Story of Medusa ❤
This is so incredible! I love Medusa, and although I like the beautiful version in a lot of depictions, I do miss the originally described tusks which I always found a bit hard to imagine exactly. This sculpture is a great, life-like way to see her in her fully original form with the coloring you put effort into making authentic!
That is nightmare fuel! I love it.
Bro this is such an amazing sculpture!! Insane work Jazza !!
Thanks for all of these years of free amazing content, just wanted to thank you !! I'm LOVING this new serie of making monsters based on real descriptions, it's amazing im having so much good time with those videos, thank you
I love this type of video, i learn more in terms of character design and hystory
Really nice work, the painting made a huge difference to elevate the already stellar work even further.
Absolutely amazing how you draw let alone sculpt. I don’t watch much/any art content but I couldn’t stop watching!! I’ll be sharing this with everyone!! Incredible work!!
Your work is not only beautiful to see, as a visual person myself, but the passion you put in the projects is also inspiring.
Thanks for the amazing content, God bless you and your family.
I love her she turned out so fricken cool ! Jazza please do more of these I’ve been loving watching you interpret these creatures
I would 1000% display this piece with all the pride in the world!!!
Jazza's sculpting are just amazing!!! And i hope to see them more and more as the channel grows!!! 😍
Outstanding! This turned out horrifying!!!!
I love how silly the snake heads look ( Amazing job Jazza! Kudos to the editors too C: )
This is AMAZING! I’ve been watching you for YEARS (I watched you paint all those characters on the wall) and your art has always amazed me!
I think she’s my favourite so far! Incredible work!
Holy shit!! I have binged your videos recently and out of all of your impressive, skillfully-made creations, this is the one that made me audibly gasp. It turned out incredible with the paint and wet textures. Please do more mythological creatures!!
the different types of varnish are a great touch!
Love it! I think that coloring your monster gave it more depth and truly brought it to life! I can’t wait to see many more monsters to come.
Something I think would be really cool would be to have a panoramic shot of all your monsters so far as at the end of your videos.
The end result is amazing!! You should do more of these!
Just an epic job!!! Amazing details and coloring of the statue. Quite the horrifying result. Well done💚!!!
Love these types of videos! The “based only on the books” and character style swaps are my favorite
As someone with a passion for mythology, seeing this video in my subscriptions made me immensely excited.
I never thought to see Medusa in such a terrorizing and mesmerizing way
Oh man. I love watching your content in parallel with TTT and seeing tie ins like this. So much fun. Great video as always!
Wow, amazing!! The details bring everything together. Would love to see more ancient mythology interpretations ❤
I love this Jazza!
I would LOVE to see this as a full series! Sign me up for anything mythological! I love the way you create them by taking bits from all different images over time!
Please do Cerberus! This is AMAZING! 😍🖤 Much love to you & yours, Jazza!
Wow, you really knocked this one out of the park! I would love to have this displayed on my shelf!!
Jazza, your artistic talent is beyond amazing. I find myself looking forward to these projects as the better parts of my time online.
This is so so cool, loved watching it! Would love to see more of these sculpting from descriptions videos, so fun to watch
Got a suggestion for you! :D
Two Descriptions of the same monster, one might go with either one.
Older description:
"Her voice is indeed but as the voice of a new-born whelp, but she herself is an evil monster, nor would anyone be glad at sight of her, no, not though it were a god that met her.
Verily she has twelve feet, all misshapen, and six necks, exceeding long, and on each one an awful head, and therein three rows of teeth, thick and close, and full of black death.
Up to her middle she is hidden in the hollow cave, but she holds her head out beyond the dread chasm,
and fishes there, eagerly searching around the rock for dolphins and sea-dogs and whatever greater beast she may haply catch, such creatures as deep-moaning Amphitrite rears in multitudes past counting."
and
"Nay, row past with all thy might, and call upon Crataiis [a nymph of the sea], the mother of [the mystery monster], who bore her for a bane to mortals. Then will she keep her from darting forth again."
- [very famous greek poet, telling you his name and his work would spoil things ;D] with an English Translation by A.T. Murray, PH.D. in two volumes. Cambridge, MA., Harvard University Press; London, William Heinemann, Ltd. 1919.
More recent description, some centuries after the older one:
"and on the other side two huge cliffs, and in one of them was [the mystery monster] a daughter of Crataeis and Trienus or Phorcus [all three of them are gods of the sea] with the face and breast of a woman, but from the flanks she had six heads and twelve feet of dogs."
-Apollodorus, Epitome
Sir James George Frazer, Ed.
If you google the text-bits, you will find the name of said monster ;)
scylla? :D
@@proangelosannuntiator4571 Jep, definitely Skylla, I know Kirke-talk, when I see it in the first description ;-D
Cerberus!!!! I completely agree. He's been my favorite Greek myth since I was 4. I've owned any action figure or comic growing up. I'm bordering 40 now, and I no longer have my stuff. But seeing you sculpt him would be awesome. I'd love to see your interpretation!
Best sculpture so far! Really appealing and cool! I love seeing jazza improving irt, really inspiring!
Please, please, please keep doing stuff like this. I absolutely LOVE watching you create these pieces.
Yay, he mentioned Jake Doubleyoo. Love that guy's videos
Magnificent! Snakes are so real. Her gaze is really terrifying. Great job, Jazza!
Y’know, thinking about it, the only modern interpretation of Medusa I can think of off the top of my head that resembles this is the version of her from the original Kid Icarus. (There might be more, of course, but the more beautiful interpretation is obviously far more widespread.)
As someone whos recently starting getting into sculpting monsters, this was very humbling 🫣😂 awsome work dude.
I love how much detail you did on the snakes then gave them this ridiculous looking head with outrageous elapid Esq front fixed fangs hahahah
