Magoo was one of the greatest motocross racers ever. But it was how he remade himself after the injury that defines the man. I met him numerous times throughout his career, and he always took a minute to notice me and say hello. As a wide-eyed youngster, he ‘made my day’ many times. You are missed, Mr Magoo.

Used to watch Magoo in the late 70's early 80's on annual trips to the Denver MX. Many years later after moving to CA we stopped at the store in Forest Hill to get stuff before riding. When we came out of the store there was a Van next to our bike trailer blocking the view and we thought someone was ripping us off but it was just a guy looking at the bikes. He said "man those bikes are sweet I sure would love to ride a bike like that". I said are you Magoo? he said yeah. Talked for a long time he even showed us the special controls on the van that he used to drive. RIP Danney.

Met him at the hotel at the '82 des Nations and he was blown away that my brother and I came over for the races. He treated me as a friend and gave me his jersey. Thank you Danny. I hope we meet again. RIP.

About 10 15 years ago , ran into Danny driving in his chair in auburn. I was thinking he might try sales in our company. Never happened , but was invited to his apartment . He told about his history and showed the video of his crash. He was still highly effected and sad about the crash.
So this morning I was watching the doc on maico motorcycles and Magoo came up. So I looked up TH-cam and just watched it all over.
Thank you Danny for involving me with your story. I learned a lot.

Love him.. Courage, spirit, he grew up to change a lot of kid's worlds for the better. I used to try to give racing the "above and beyond" like him, but no one was like him. Back to courage.

As a kid Danny Magoo was one of favorites! He was so fun to watch with his crazy ass no-holds barred style!! When he had his accident we were bummed you know as a kid your hero is knocked out of the game. But man I'm sending mucho prayers and positive energy to his family and friends!! He will always be my champ!

When I was a pre-teen I would go watch my friend practice at Argyll Park MX in Dixon Ca, and sometimes Magoo was there, practicing on his Maico,. Man, he was fast! Between each session on the track he would crack open a beer as his bike cooled, then go back out and burn through another tank of fuel, unless, of course he broke it in half first! That is one of my fondest memories of Danny. My other profound memory was seeing him at the Hangtown national years later, just after his injury. When I asked him for an autograph, he looked up with utter disappointment, and replies "I would love to, but I can't hold a pen"
I could see tears welling up in his eyes, and mine too. Over the following years I would see him at various races, like the Sacramento mile, and he was always a little better every time I saw him. I had great hope that life was improving for him, and it seemed it was for a while. RIP Mr. Magoo, thanks for the awesome memories!

One of the greatest motocrossers of all time. Probably the hardest charger ever. He paid a terrible price for his style. He lived for m/x and was unique in as much as he was also an accomplished showman. He gave so much pleasure and exitement to m/x fans. May he never be forgotten. R.I.P. Danny, you deserve it.

One of a kind. Good luck finding anybody who truly loves the sport of off road motorcycle racing that wouldn't do it all over again. And yes, the 20th ranked rider should be making more than a hundred gurr a year just as Brad and Danny were discussing. Thanks for posting this great video series about the legendary Magoo.

How many people in all of the world, just live their life simply existing with little to no aspirations? That was not Danny Chandler. He lived his life to the fullest he could, sticking to his own judgement. He lived a better life after his paralysis, than 90% of the worlds population has ever experienced. The "Human spirit" to be good at something, is the best spirit a Human Being can have. Life is so much more, than simply existing, and it's yours. 1959-2010 Danny made good use of his "dash" between those numbers representing his life. That is worth celebrating.

The ups and downs . Sometimes the downs slam us hard. Some don't get up again.
Thanks for this post. Life isn't a Hallmark card. Danny Chandler was an amazing racer, everyone at the time knew it. The rest was his business . The lessons are many from this post. I call it a life well lived. Life gives us legends and memories . May his spirit rest easy now, he was on the gas for long enough!

I saw Danny Chandler race at Sears point November 21st in 1978. He crashed early in the race. His sub frame and seat were bent up like a sissy and his bars were bent. There was a huge uphill jump that was at the top of the hill at the announcers tower. He was not even trying to catch the pack. He was getting about 6 or 7 feet higher than all of the other racers on that jump. You could not see where he landed, but you could hear the bike land with a bash. Most everyone stopped caring about the leaders and were just waiting for Magoo to hit that jump again. There were probably a thousand spectators leaning over the fence with thumbs up egging him on to jump higher. It was fun as hell. Those old open class bikes had shit for suspension, but they had all the power.

"Most everyone stopped caring about the leaders and were just waiting for Magoo to hit that jump again. "
That was a very good statement showing what I used to love about this sport. Nobody had the tracks wired, and the top 10 were not on the same second doing the exact same things lap after boring lap. We actually saw who had the most talent very easily.

I briefly met the Venezuela MXofN team, (and a bit of video I have of it), in 2007 at Budds Creek Maryland USA, while roaming trough the pits. I gotta tall ya, the gal in their camp-----was damn good looking. :) I wish all you good folks in Venezuela the best, which means you need to do the same we in the USA have to do, reject socialism and embrace individual liberty and our right to use our minds and do business with each other, with a system that protects that individual liberty. Politics, it really is just that easy.

I had 8mm film of magoo that showed him in a different position on bike compaired to other riders. This was on an off camber bend. And i also found i had film of bob hannah on same track doing same odd position on bike. Now i know why this made them both so fast...it was an intuitive move that prevented them from crashing (by weight transfer). Normal riders would hit an unintentional bump that would kick bike sideways. Hannah and magoo would go through these unseen bumps faster because they were pre positioned for bumps even if they didnt hit them. I think this makes sense.

Respect. A racer told me to check out the McGoo story. I'm pretty over the edge, drink n and ride mx like crazy. I'm 50 years old. These are some wise words and I got the message. This guy sold me an 88 CR500 and a 06 CR 250. He says he'll teach how to maintain them. If you ride bikes you should be able to fix them yourself. Should I film him doing this and flip it on YT? Is that something you would watch?

Death due to "complications of his paralysis" 25 years later does sound a bit different, (and very vague), but I don't know why anything would be hidden, even if he did decide to take his own life. If he did take his own life, I wish he would have wrote his own eulogy and made it public.

I can do with out the last segment. Why do good stories about interesting and talented people end with propaganda about unions and serving the community? They did/do not understand the premise of what they, (Danny and Brad), were saying, but that is how propaganda works. Start off with the story, end with propaganda. Now that you know that, you will see it in many vids., if you understand the premises of what you are hearing.
