I love the idea of built-in storage. Living and riding in Canada in the winter, studded tires are a must, snow rarely comes without ice!

I have a TPU tube, a CO2 inflator+Cart, dynaplugs, a multitool, tire lever in my Domane Gen4 downtube. All of this rolls into a bag that easily slides into the tube. No saddle bag. It's way quicker to get to than a saddle bag -- it's a flip of a lever and a big panel drops out with the bottle cage attached. Not having doggy balls on your saddle is underrated

Long Teng, a Chinese OEM that makes bikes for Argon 18, is releasing an all road bike with down tube storage. I'm riding one of their older frames without storage. It's a cool feature if you don't pay extra for it. For drug smuggling it would be amazing.

I ride a 47 cm Trek Domane SL5. I absolutely could not easily carry my spare kit without my downtube storage. The frame is TINY (so no frame bags fit without losing water), there's relatively minimal clearance above the tire (so no saddle bag). I do have a small handlebar bag, but it holds medical supplies + a snack, so I avoid jamming a bunch of crap in there for when I need my meds mid-ride. I don't want to be fumbling through a tube, CO2, etc., on the large majority of my rides when I take my meds. I also keep emergency medication in there that someone other than me needs to be able to quickly find and administer. So, yeah, downtube storage 100% worth it in my case! I willing to accept I'm an edge case, but the clean look of having a completely hidden flat kit + tools is *chef's kiss*.

I don't buy bikes that come without internal storage anymore. My gravel (Orbea Terra), XC and AM bikes have downtube storage and I get spare tubes, pumps, CO2 and complete mini tools in there. It's always with me, no weight on the body / more space for nutrition and other things in the pockets, no bags are dangling on the bike, clean looks... the list goes on and on. It's underrated if you ask me 👍.

I disagree with storage being overrated. I have it on my diverge and have found what used to go in a saddle bag (tube, levers, tool, and even pump) go into the frame, and touch wood, I have never needed them in over 2000 miles of tubeless cycling. Then, I have a small frame bag or handlebar bag, and into that goes what would have gone in my jersey pockets in years gone by (rain jacket, snacks, phone, tubeless plugs) which means my jersey is empty and that feeling, is hugely underrated! All of this also to say, that on days where I just want to take my phone, I go 'bagless' and the bike looks so much cleaner than if I had a saddle bag of spares....

Where I live there is quite a lot of snow (Norway, close to Oslo). For perfect cold and snowy winter conditions you might not need studded tires, but that is rarely the case. Most days are close to unrideable without studded tires during the winter. I've never heard of anyone (who rides regularly outside during the winter) ride through the winter without studded tires where I live.

  • @kieron88ward

Putting a hole in a tube makes a weak point. You'll have to add strength around the hole (i.e. storage space) to maintain the strength and stiffness. If you have internal storage for the same strength and/or stiffness then it has to be heavier. And that's before you get into the stress raisers leading to fatigue cracks.

Lower centre of gravity!!! Having stuff in the down tube(lower on the bike) can reduce swinging/swaying weight when pedalling off the saddle!!! Plus as someone that cycles in a place where the roads are good and rarely get flat tire or mechanical issue(touch wood). I think storing tools and stuff in the bike frame is a great idea! As it keeps the bike looking smart, clean and keep us away from nasty saddle bags.

as someone who cycled through a couple of Midwestern winters on studded tires, I found they are completely useless on ice, at least in below -10C. The studs are not pointy enough and the weight of a bike+rider is not enough to drive the spikes into ice. on the contrary, the metal of studs goes over ice like skates leading to, sometimes, very dramatic falls.
What studs ARE great for is cycling in just below 0C conditions when the ice is not so hard, or on hard compacted snow. Overall, I agree they might be a great solution for a couple of weeks of mild UK winter.

@@JanneRasanen2 interesting. I was running Schwalbe Marathon winter. I even changed the studs for new ones in hope that it will improve something, but no. Still, I was more than happy to use them throughout the winter season, and only needed to pay extra attention at times. Later I exchanged my front one for a no-name with a more aggressive thread (and studs) and it helped. Maybe my experience is an outlier, also because i am rather lightweight. great to hear you have no issues with this model!

I ride tubeless with no emergency tubes most of the time. That's because there is nowhere on my local trail system that is too far from the central trailhead where I park my car. If I'm somewhere else and doing a long ride, then I bring along more stuff than will fit in the downtube. So I use a backpack that has a compartment that keeps spare parts and tools all together and separate from food, water, and clothing. Oh, I know it's not the fashion these days, but I care about function and care not one iota about fashion.
