You guys are my kindred spirits! I have a custom English cycles with a Chris King HS to match the paint, a custom silica frame pump to match paint - Rob at English even added a frame peg on the seat tube to fit the pump perfectly. Also, every bike needs stainless steel king cages!
Frame pumps are old school but very effective. Years ago my favorite was made by Zefal. Bikes used to be made with pump pegs on the inside of the steer tube to help keep them in place. Chris King anything is top quality and not overindulgent. Their stuff seldom wears out. I had one headset that lasted through three frames. I have Chris King headset and bottom bracket on my titanium gravel bike.
I have a Chris King headset with over 200k, unmaintained miles on it and its still smooth. I've not had the same luck with their road hubs though. I had to adjust the preload far too often on the two sets I owned.
I simply do not get Brooks saddles, but I will accept them on something retro or purely for style. People who put them on modern carbon bikes are monsters.
I do a lot of bicycle touring and it is the most comfortable saddles that I have ever used. If you take a look at the bikes used for the Tour Divide you will see quite a few Brooks saddles.
I saw the English bikes at the 2016 and 2019 NAHBS in Sacramento, they're gorgeous. I have a custom 2018 Moots Vamoots RSL with Campag Record, full Enve kit and Chris King Mango headset, spacers and hubs with matching Mango Moots seatpost clamp. Two steel bikes, 1975 Albert Eisentraut and 2016 Breadwinner Lolo.
I have a custom steel Speedvagen Rugged Road bike with Chris King and Enve finishes that I've had for a couple of years. I absolutely love it so much that I'm considering another in titanium, but I just don't have the money.
I have a silca impero frame pump (the one shown in your picture) and it is indeed a wonderful bit of kit. Mine’s mounted on the rear QR skewer and the join of the seat tube and seat stays (as required by The Rules) It has the benefit of being really sturdy should you have to fend off a highwayman
Chris King “unnecessary”, “indulgent”? The quality and support are legendary for a reason. Yesterday I took off a brand new other brand headset to replace it with a CK Dropset because the bike will be in harsh conditions so we’re not taking chances. Every bike I own has CK bearings. They’re serviceable and rebuildable and the fact is that they last a long time. The support is awesome.
It is unnecessary. Back when they first came out, a reliable sealed bearing headset was a rare product in the market. Nowadays, any half decent headset will work the same.
The 2 bikes I currently own, a 3T Explro now called Primo, black, carbon everywhere, love it AND th Lauf Seigla with suspension fork and ergon/canyon suspended seatpost, so comfortable!
I remember Rob English from club cycling events in the Berkshire (UK) area around 20 years ago, he'd often win, on and off road. I particularly remember he won a 7x10mile lap xc mountain biking endurance race on a super light rigid mtb where he was involved in the frame design for a dutch bike company. Then he moved to the USA, good to see he's making cool bikes!
I used to Live in Eugene, OR (USA) and occasionally saw Mr. English's work. My dream is to be able to afford a custom build and then test ride it through those amazing hills.
My latest gravel bike is a titanium gravel bike with red 13 speed king headset and bb enve fork seatpost bars and stem silca top tube bike and beautiful zipp 303sw wheels
I dont really understand the silca pump hype, like you add lots of weght to your bike for something you use few times a year, and it still will be pain to use beacuse its hand pump, like why?
CK Headsets are just a nice bit of bling. that is it. Unless you do mad barspins, the CK is overkill. But that KING KING KING KING KING on any bike makes it +10 Aura
My dream - if I won the Lottery Jackpot, of course - would be an all-titanium bike. That is, any part or component that could be made out of this marvellous material, would be. Oh - and with the most astoundingly beautiful finishes and paint jobs. Then I'd wake up to my dream.
My shoes take days to dry... I'm seriously tempted (again) to get a shoe dryer. There's nothing like that "ugggghhhhh" feeling of putting on wet shoes.
I have an ENVE stem… it’s like a real bicycle stem, only mental. Granted it’s light and beautiful, but why? (Answered my own question - it’s beautiful).
Maybe I'm just incredibly lucky but I've been riding my bike for about two years now. Never once carried a spare tube, a pump, or anything. Never once flatted. I've had two punctures that I know of that the sealant saved.
and a follow-up show where they have them all removed. The tats look like a school child drew them on with a biro, and they do the opposite of making the wearer look good. As if wearing a cheap ball cap backwards inside a closed room wasn't enough.
I have CK headsets, BBs and Silca frame pumps on both my custom built frames. One pumps is painted BRG to match the steel frame and the other is customized with titanium barrel and anodized to match the Ti frame. Beautiful pumps and much better functioning than the Topeak frame pump I had before.
Something that's expensive but actually useful: Ceramic Speed bottom bracket, coated if you're willing to spend even more. Not for the wattage savings (although I'll take whatever I can get), instead for amazing smoothness. Makes the power train silky smooth.
You know, I replaced my Cane Creek headset for a Chris King headset just because I bought into the whole 'it's the best.' However, it kept loosening up and I never had that issue with the Cane Creek headset. 🤷🏽♂️
@@ronm9357 Arguing over Cane Creek vs Chris King is ridiculous. Unless you buy some cheapo, sketchy headset that nobody has ever heard of or do barspins for a living, the majority of modern headsets are going to perform how they should. Where you might see some differences is with longevity and durability in relation to different use cases. CK's are made to be serviceable, which is great when you're trying to get back on the bike ASAP. There are even how-to videos for it, even from CK themselves. They also have a lifetime warranty on all their headsets and Cane Creek has it on their 110 series. Along with those reasons, some people get them just because they like them. It's the same with other changes that they make on the bike. I don't know why certain people keep talking about it like a King headset is going to make them ride faster or something. It's weird. Why did you switch to CK if your Cane Creek was working fine? Did you install it yourself? If not, did you take it back to the LBS that did? Did you talk to anybody at CK? You gotta give more context.
@bikernaut1 I can't imagine a heavy hub feeling better than I light one. Berd spokes most definitely don't look good very long either. Especially if they're not black. My ex had 2 wheelsets with bird spokes and they looked like shit after a few months of riding😅

You hit a couple of my favorites and an honorable mention. (topeak frame pumps) I'll add Paul Canti breaks. Bonus points for the colored versions.
LOL, I still have a Zefal top-tube pump from the 1980s... and yes it still works... nice seeing them still getting some love!

That Silca pump on the illustrated bike is cool. Would be cool to see the pump illustrated (maybe in contrasting colors)?

I get brooks leather saddles on all my bikes - so comfortable and so cool - but then again I like classic steel bikes and I'm not bothered by weight.
The tattoos of the guy who customizes Scott bikes look like he became so excited riding his latest creation that he shat himself.

I have a custom steel bike by Ricky Feather in York. Work of art. Well worth the money .
Did Mr “weight doesn’t matter” just say he’s converting his Moss to a lightweight hill climbing bike? 😂😂😂
Maybe his talking about durability and besides heavy bikes are a good workout 😂
I think he usually says that for general riding, weight doesn't really matter. It obviously does matter for racing, even more so for hill climbs 🤷♂️
The Chris King headset is nice but I've never had much problem with any other properly installed and maintained one.
Titanium stem and seatpost to match my ti frame
