The new Pelican Catch that will come out next year is gonna be around $1500, that's about the cheapest so far, but it shows they are gonna start a price war soon. It will have the same type of drive as a Mirage drive. th-cam.com/video/Jfi6SLQ_Ju0/w-d-xo.html
As well as they should. If the idea is to have more people kayak fishing, then they need to be more affordable for the average Joe. BTW, thanks for chiming in Robert
Samuel FlaBra Riot has a 1000 dollar pedal drive. And pelican has a 1500ish. They’re slowly coming down. Gotta back the little guys like Vibe who make quality at a truly affordable price. Eventually hobie, Jackson, Wilderness systems, etc are gonna have to bring the price down too. Hopefully without sacrificing quality.
WS has two sub-$1000 kayaks that compare in price with Vibe; they just don't have the metal frame seat (Ride Series) . Jackson has the Cruise Series (metal seats, but not a lot of 'extras') Old Town now has the Topwater and Bonafide just introduced the RISE. The problem I have with 'backing the little guy like Vibe' is that there they are manufactured overseas. At least with the 4 I mentioned, they are USA Made. I would much rather keep the $$$ here.
Samuel FlaBra Your $400 kayak with a trolling has to be registered every year if you are here in Florida and a pedal kayak doesn't which is nice. Its not cheap but its quality.
Old Town has made it pretty clear that they are not trying to compete in the 12-14 foot pedal drive market with this boat. At 10'6" this is a smaller and therefore more portable, yet very stable fishing kayak. If you want a 12' pedal drive, the Compass is a great option. There is however a demand for 10 foot fishing kayaks because of how easy they are to transport. If $2k is too much for a pedal yak, lots of great paddle yaks under $1k are available. Great video as always!
Once you try out the PDL drive and feel how smooth it is all other prop drives just seem inadequate. I haven’t tested out this kayak but I did test out the Malibu PDL (same drive from old town) and I didn’t want to get out of it. Old Town makes a great kayak and a really great pedal drive. All you have to do is go test one out and you’ll see.
Also, after factoring in the free Helix 5, price drops to $1700. It would be difficult to find a better pedal kayak for that price. I already own the 106, and like it so much I will also be getting the PDL.
Hey Robert! met you at the Fred Hall show Hobie booth seminar I was the only one siting there lol. I just ordered my Topwater PDL today from AKC Can't wait! I'll be mounting the boondox wheels on it so we'll see how that goes Stay tuned! : )
Looks like some nice features, and affordable for a pedal kayak rig. The one drawback as you pointed out is the rear lift handle being mounted off-center, and not one also on the opposite side to balance it out when lifting.
Glad I have my Profish 400 with a Bixpy jet motor, but I really enjoy watching these products coming out. If I hadn't shelled out for the motor I'd be considering one of these pedal kayaks. Always good stuff Robert.
I had an issue with mine, totally my fault - they have great customer service and a great product. Maybe you'll do a review sometime. I have a feeling I'm not going to see many here on the East Coast, at least not right away.
I understand that 2 grand is cheap for a old town but it’s still expensive and I just don’t get how kayak companies justify the pedal system being a thousand dollar upgrade in most cases but it is what it is and if you got to have it you got to pay, me myself I’ll paddle and it’s a good workout and unless I can score a used one much cheaper or the cost comes way way down
They have a ton of money in R&D, materials and overhead that they have to recoup. It’s nice to see that they’re coming down in price. Trending the right way.
Robert Field I have to say Robert you do reply to a lot of the comments here, it is commendable and also as far as old town I have always admired everything they put out, just from afar, always to pricy for me, but I’m glad to see they are starting to come down in price some, maybe I’ll be able to afford something from them second hand one day? Just maybe? Lord knows if I can justify spending over a grand on a rod I might as well spend that on my yak, why not?
@@YakFishField "They have a ton of money in R&D" How much R&D can REALLY go into some peddals with a prop on the end? These have been around for hundreds of years. There's literally no excuse other than price gouging their customers.

Looks nice, but i'm really liking the Dream kayaks Siren 10.5 pedal. Also Riptide has a pedal yak coming out as well as Riot kayaks and of course pelican which i would like to see in a 10 version but as of right now the Siren 10.5 is looking pretty good on the limited videos that i have seen so far.
Haven’t seen the Siren. The Riot looks very cheaply made to me. The Pelican looks solid but time will tell once people are able to get it on the water. Regardless, it’s exciting that so many new options are coming out
At 10'6" with a pedal drive for $2,000 isnt too affordable at all. That's like what $400 cheaper than a hobie outback and 2' smaller. I'd put up the extra 4 Bill's and get an outback. I do see you get more accessories on the topwater so maybe that'll be the deal breaker for some.
Robert Field yea I think they come out right at 2500 Bobert. It's a cool yak I love Johnson outdoors I just wish it was at least 12 feet long. You know I gotta give you a hard time homie.
Hello Mr. Field i know you may not want to with someone like me, but i just wanted to ask you if you have gone jugging from a kayak, if you do not know what jugging is, its when u take a bottle fill it up with water a quarter of the way, tie fishing line around the tongue to the lid cap and put weedeater line in a clamp at both ends in about 6 inches in length and tie a hook to the end, you put bait on the hook and throw the bottle with the line in the water and wait... you fish the way at night and its a way of fishing for catfish and sometimes gar, i would like to see a video like this, and if in kentucky near lake barkley i would be happy to go with you if you wouldnt mind, this way of fishing is my favorite and its very efficient way to catch fish, i went for 4 hours and caught 22 catfish, i feel like you're a person to try new things and i havent seen a video like this yet, you may not read this but worth a shot
So pumped to see your opinions on this! Definitely the most feature loaded pedal kayak I’d seen coming out this year that was priced so well! What did you think of side handles and carry weight for someone handling it solo? I’ve seen it’s 77 lbs without drive and seat which seems pretty reasonable. Thanks again for keeping these coming!
Yeah it’s about in line with my outbacks weight, which I can carry solo, but it’s unwieldy. I’d plan on getting a cart to make your life easier. I like the C-Tug from Railblaza and you can get a discount at yakgear.com using code yakfield20
Hopefully this won’t have rudder cable snapping issues like the Native Titans. Want a Titan 10.5 but don’t feel it is ready for longterm use straight from store. Considering this yak
That’s actually a very good deal considering what you get vs other pedal drives. My only question is why only one rear handle? Obviously there’s room for a second. Doesn’t make sense. Try supporting the right side from underneath. Your hand will be slipping all over the place.

A 10' foot kayak is too short for many of us. I still don't like how Old Town's pedal drive system has the prop blade right between your legs when the pedal drive is raised for shallow water fishing or beaching.
Look good, still $ 2000, I went with the Kaku Wahoo, 12 feet of lean, mean, fishing machine, added a bow mounted foot controlled trolling motor and still came in way under $2000 including getting it registered.......
