Loved hearing you speak Dutch, very impressive!! Your pronunciation is really good 😊✌🏻

Indeed, I never heard someone still mangling up the word order in dutch sentences occasionally with such a good pronounciation of the words. Sure I can still hear the english accent when paying attention, but I couldn't discover even a single mispronounced vowel. Once you get the word order right and become more comfortable speaking dutch I think you may even be able to pass for a native speaker to most dutch not living in your region.

Bijna accentloos zelfs.

Your Dutch is quite amazing, especially the accent. There are some moments where you have an english word order, but those are few. You are really good to follow. Nice job and keep up!

Being half French, half Dutch, I can tell you a very simple trick to make Dutch people speak Dutch to you. Just say the following phrase with your best French accent: "sorry bûûte ai speek notte ingleesh werrie gooduh", followed by: "maar ik spreek wel Nederlands!".
Success guaranteed!!! Succes gegarandeerd! Succès garanti! :)

    • @reuireuiop0
      @reuireuiop0 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I second that. Actually, pronunciation is so close to native, that you may get people talking to you very fast, thinking you're either native or long arrived.
Your friend (Mysterio !) something to do with this?
And I add, you also sound confident & "rooted" like it comes natural.

      @@jaccovermeulen2762

@@DutchAmericano funny how that works. I've been to Australia for a long time a few years back, and it was actually difficult to speak Dutch again. Really took several weeks to completely switch back and recall Dutch vocabulary again. But then again, half of my thinking is in English anyway depending on subject, and many times I know the English word but not the Dutch one simply because I've learned about and think about the subject in English.

I have noticed that when you speak Dutch, there are moments that there is no accent at all. Like the word " dat" or "ik" and " heb" but also a more difficult words like "lukt" or even the word "taalcursussen". Awesome! Keep up the good work.

Dag, Ava. Je Nederlands gaat vooruit. Hou vol, je kan het! Jullie spreken thuis Engels?

For the non-dutchspeakers: a few weaks ago an english translation of "flappie" was released: th-cam.com/video/nnPZ32r_-fI/w-d-xo.html
Also Ava: I worked in a store on a station for a while and we had a lot of non-dutch speakers as costumers there. I always started to speak in english to them as soon as I heard they we're non-dutchspeakers. But once a guy turned up at my check and pointed to his button that said "praat nederlands met me", so I did. He told me, just like you, that every dutch person just changed to english as soon as they heard he was a non-dutchspeaker. Since than, I always tried to talk in dutch if a non-dutch speaker started in dutch. So maybe, a button is just what you need!

Two (personal) questions for the next Q&A:
    1. Would you like to share what happened to the index finger of your left hand?
    2. You've mentioned your Dutch girlfriend quite a few times in your videos. Maybe you can do a video together, with her telling the pro's and con's about living in the US, and you telling the pro's and con's about living in The Netherlands. (If she wants to, of course 😊 )

Hi Ava. I stumbled upon your videos by complete accident, and have been enjoying them quite a lot in the last few days. I rarely leave comments to videos, but for this one I just have to make an exception just so I get to say to you that your Dutch is SO GOOD. Unbelievably fluent, crisp pronunciation, and wide vocabulary. Big compliments to you!

Hi Ava. I love these videos. I found out that my sister watches your videos too. (So if you 're reading this, Diny, hi from your big sister) Your Dutch is quite impressive.
I can imagine the song 'Flappie' is a little bit of a culture shock. It is not just a christmas song like 'Jingle bells' or 'All I want for christmas'. To understand it better you should know about Dutch cabaret of 'Kleinkunst'. On the other hand, an American should not react too triggered to this song. You have songs like: 'Grandma got run over by a reindeer'. Just saying. (And if you would explain the theme of 'I saw mummy kissing Santa Claus' things would also got a little lost in translation)

Hello Ava, So Persian/Iranian blood, huh? Though I would never have guessed it on my own -- like many others, I saw more Indian or Pakistani blood in you -- but now that you've said it, I'm not really surprised, either. It really makes sense, and it explains the complexion, the eyebrows and the beautiful thick, dark hair.
Your Dutch in this video was good enough for me to perfectly understand what you were saying. Sure, it could be better, but you haven't been here that long, yet. And we Dutch can make it rather hard for English speakers to learn our language. Because we are generally quite comfortable speaking English, and to some degree we love showing off that ability. So, give it time.
It's always good to see another video from you, dear. Keep it up.

  • @nienke7713
    @nienke7713 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Although there are some mistakes (especially with de/het and some sentence structuring) that make it obvious that you're not a native speaker, overall it was really good and I could understand what you were saying without a problem. I was especially pleasantly surprised that it doesn't sound like you have much of an American and/or English-language accent when speaking Dutch, and if you'd work on your vocab, grammar, and de/het some more, you'd eventually be able to completely fool Dutch people into thinking you're a native speaker.
Dutch people, especially in larger cities, have a tendency to speak English as soon as they can tell that Dutch isn't your native language, because we like to accommodate people, and our English is generally comes with less effort than their Dutch; but if someone asks us to speak Dutch with them because they want to practice, we're generally very willing to do so (although if they're people you interact with more regularly, you might need to remind them of it every now and then, because switching to English is something that's somewhat of a 2nd nature to many Dutch people) (Also, just for the record, I'm speaking in English here to try and keep things accessible to a wider audience who might not speak Dutch, but if you like getting comments in Dutch, I'll be happy to write both in Dutch and English next time)
Flappie is by Youp van 't Hek, who is, amongst other things, a comedian; the song is intended as a bit of dark humour (especially the end) and at this point it's (almost) part of Dutch holiday tradition
Dutch 'Chinese" food is actually for a big part of Indonesian in origin, although the restaurants ore often run by people of Chinese ancestry, and there are still Chinese influences, so it's this weird mix of Indonesia, Chinese, (possibly other Asian influences,) and then all adjusted to the Dutch palate
Have you ever had a bagel from Bagels&Beans (they offer take-out, at least now with the pandemic)? If so, how do they compare to the bagels you're used to from the US?

    Blijf zo bezig!
My comment on this video is a bit late, but couldn't help myself to do so.
Your dutch is amazing, considering that this is about 2 years ago.
You are very good with pronouncing G-words. Ofcourse I can hear you are not dutch, but sometimes thats very hard to hear.
    keep up the good work!

I'm planning on moving to the Netherlands within the next 3 years, preferably through the current company I work for since they have an office in Wormerveer. I've been teaching myself for the past 3 weeks and while challenging, it is very fun. I speak 3 languages already but they just happened via my upbringing. Completely different when you're 35 and actually trying to learn it rather than being born in to the environment 😅

  • @DexxterClarkMusic
    @DexxterClarkMusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Your pronouciation is very very good.
    I was surprised.
    Ok, Flappie...
Flappie is a typical Dutch cabaret song (the dutch term: cabaret/comedy), and not a Christmas song by origin.
It was written in the seventies when Joep van t Hek was in cabaretgroep Nar.
Typical cabaret songs have mostly weird, grim, or funny stories to make you think, often with a punchline.
(other examples: Tearoom Tango (Wim Sonneveld), Meneer Alzheimer (van t Hek), t regent zonnestralen (Acda & de Munnik))
These songs have a complete different target audience then what most people call Hollandse muziek with Frans Bauer and Andre Hazes.
It was somehere in the 2000s that the song became a "christmas" song all of a sudden, because the story takes place around christmas.

I think a big difference in terms of the food is that fast food in the Netherlands actually *isn't* the cheaper option. It's generally much cheaper to buy ingredients from a local market, and cook food yourself.
I can't say I'm all too familiar with how this is in the US, but from what I gather, the fast food *is* actually one of the cheapest options available, making it a much more standard go-to for the poorer parts of the population.
I might be wrong though, please do correct me if that's the case.

Would you like the Dutch commenters to comment in Dutch, or would you prefer English?
Also, I don't think you'd ever need to feel like you're making a fool out of yourself when speaking Dutch. From my experience (American girlfriend, got to know a lot of expats through her) most Dutch people will very much appreciate any effort you make to speak Dutch, even if it is "terrible" so to speak. And, your Dutch isn't terrible at all. I quite enjoy hearing you speak Dutch, it gives me a few laughs whenever you say something in Dutch, following the English grammatical order. Gives me flashbacks to when my girlfriend started learning Dutch 14 years ago!

During WWII, and the period after the war, there was scarcity in the Netherlands. The story behind Flappie did actually happen fairly often amongst families at that time.

It probably helps to know Flappie started out as a song in a standup comedy skit if you want to understand why Dutchies like the song.

Wow! Your Dutch really is very good. Some words do give away you're not Dutch, but really... I'm amazed! Doesn't the "g" hurt your throat anymore? Keep it up!

Interesting thing: an English language version of the Flappie song was released just this Christmas season by an old rocker named Todd Rundgren. You can listen to it here: th-cam.com/video/CCfcpsIssNE/w-d-xo.html

About speaking a foreign language, try to think in Dutch.
I am dutch but when I speak English I am also thinking in English.
Don not try to think in English and translate it to Dutch. It works, but we use some words in a different order.
And that is how you can hear if you think in the foreign language our just translate your thoughts.
About the top2000. In my youth it was always Deep Purple with Child in time that became number one.
Now these days it is Bohemian rhapsody from Queen. And the movie made it a real all time high.
And yes the political situation in the USA sucked for four years.
    Glad it is over.

Prima gesproken!

My dad (deceased) was of African ancestry and my mom is Anglo-Saxon, friends in Brazil think I'm Brazilian, Arabs think I'm Arab, however, when exposed to a lot of sunshine, my body hair goes blond, which really confuses people. Guessing ethnicity is good for a few chuckles. BTW, Eva strikes me as being quite attractive in appearance and personality-wise.

Hi Ava, when you visit Rotterdam, check out the Chinese restaurants on the Westersingel (leading right from/to the Centraal Station). Thanks to the history of Chinese Rotterdammers in our city, these are not the familiar mixed Chinese-Indonesian enterprises.

Rotterdam is probably the most American like city because after WO II it was build as a car centered city (which is what they are slowly reversing). Would be nice to see an on location reaction to the city. Also please do a post asking for places to visit before you go there I am pretty sure you will get plenty of suggestions you would not find in a typical lonely planet guide
