The problem with Shenmue now is that other games took inspiration from it and did it better. It'd be next to impossible for a Yakuza series fan to try and play Shenmue for the first time now. That being said I still have a huge nostalgia boner for it and I get all misty-eyed whenever I hear the Bob's Pizza theme. Or the Tomato Convenience Store theme. Or literally any song from it. ....Bobusu Pizza!
Yeah, it would be like saying Jimi Hendrix sucks compared to Joe Satriani, when the only reason we have Joe Satriani is because he quit the football team the moment he heard Hendrix died, and dedicated himself to guitar.
I wouldn't be surprised if they had to have the voices for characters filmed on separate days, even down to minute roles like people you pass on the street. There's so much dialogue where people respond or react to whatever part of the story you're at that I'm surprised they managed to fit a game alongside all the talking. Like, you could go around and talk to everyone about one topic, make literally one step of progress on the storyline and suddenly the entire town has something to say about it. I can recognize Shenmue's flaws, and how it's not a very good game from multiple standpoints, but I still find it charming and like it regardless. Whether that makes it a guilty pleasure or I'm just selectively accepting of it, but it doesn't stop me from loving it. I'm really looking forward to the continuation of the series. And I mean, all the other examples you said for series to hope for a continuation to are also on my list, but at least this one's been explicitly announced.
I wholeheartedly agree with everything said but adore Shenmue and the sequel. It's a "you had to be there" classic for it to make sense to anyone not "there" and my love for it transcends the game now to how it affected me then, um, now.
A lot of people's good feelings for the game come down to it's Japan simulator aspects though. People forget (or are too young) but back in the year 2000 there were very few options to get your Japanese culture fix. But then here was this game that gave you such an intimate look into life in Japan: here's a typical house, with a typical bedroom, a typical kitchen, a typical park, a typical sushi bar, a typical convenience store, etc. For anyone with even a passing interest in Japan, the detailed foreignness of the environment was infinitely fascinating.
Yahtzee is just mad because this is an inferior simulator of how he spends his weekend. Doing what looks like busy work at the docks in hopes to find Sailors wanting to spend some quality time with him. And he is right--you want to spend quality time there are better options--even if that section of Craig's List is removed for being illegal.
"I'm thinking the plot is the plucky hero that got beaten up by the sneering villain who killed his dad probably beats up the sneering villain in the end!" That assumption aged badly, we were all expecting it too..... but not even!
The secret to enjoying Shenmue unironically: Step 1: Turn the voices to Japanese so that you can hear everyone emote properly and Ryo emote at all. The sound quality is still a bit off, but I think that was a stylistic choice to make it sound like an 80's television drama. Step 2: Treat it as an Open World Point And Click Adventure with Beat 'Em Up elements, more akin to something like Gabriel Knight or Laura Bow than Yakuza, only designed by a relatively sane person so the puzzle solutions don't require brain damage to solve. Step 3: Explore. In addition to finding the odd music track or martial arts move lying around or for sale, you can also occasionally find alternate, rational, solutions to puzzles or skip steps during the investigation. Step 4: Turn brightness all the way up for the Stealth sections. Because, seriously, fuck the flashlight's cone of vision.
The best way to enjoy Shenmue is to play it when it was brand new, when individual fingers being animated was a marvel, and also as a kid with plenty of free time who's just happy to see a depiction of Japan on a street level.
No, seriously, I have no idea why they would rip on each other, aside from being competing channels. But since neither of them put out that much content I just assumed there'd be room for both. I seriously have no idea if there's actually bad blood between the Escapist and Destructoid or if it was just a pun.
Could you please explain to me whether or not destructoid and the escapist had a falling out or if Yahtzee was simply making a joke at the expense of a competing channel. I really wasn't playing stupid.
@@JakobatHeart its more than that. Alot of it has to do with the tiers as well. The physical copy of the game turned out to be a digital code for Epic Store and not an actual disk. The ones who took the survey saying they wanted Steam basically being told now that they won't be getting theirs until a year has passed which was very misleading. Backers were also promised the demo before anyoneelse, but that ended up not happening
Even back then Shenmue split the gaming community and because of its flaws even almost 20 years ago people hated the series for the tedious waiting around and life simulation aspect. But it also had so many innovative ideas and while it is indeed pointless to pick everything up and move it around for the time it came out the sheer fact you could do it was so awesome and made you feel for the first time you were in a real open world. By todays standards it is of course laughably small and you can't do much at all but back then before all the 3D GTAs and stuff .. phew I mean Sega didn't bankrupt itself for nothing Shenmue was so huge and inventive it sucked up more money than it could every hope to bring in again.
I also recently played through Shenmue for the first time, and I agree completely. The open world would be cool if there were actually fun activities to do, or activities that actually contributed to your success in game (besides training). Still you should play Shenmue II. That game is absolutely amazing and deserves all the praise it gets. Honestly I would tell anyone to ship the first game, as Shenmue II will blow you away. Like, it's so impressive.
I think people should still try Shenmue 1 first, but if they don't like it they should just skip it and play part 2. It is a very different game with more action, a bigger world, more things to do and a more interesting story. If they want to know what happened in Shenmue 1's story they can just watch Shenmue the Movie on TH-cam th-cam.com/video/de3UTAfKGfQ/w-d-xo.html
I liked the first one better. The 2nd one had too many moments when it felt like it was forcing you forward, too many chases, and the fact that they shoehorned QTEs into the middle of actual fistfights, ostensibly for people who suck at the fighting, always sent me into a red rage. That game ruined boss fights, and Shenmue 3 ruined the fighting altogether.
The jokes funny until you realize thst Shenmue is not romaji (Shenmuu) and was purely written that way to make english speakers pronounce it cotrectly like they virtually always do. Same situation is NiOh. (Niou)
I remember one "genius" trying to justify this on either here (and it's been long buried) or on Stephanie Sterling's review of the remake where they were all, "iT's NoT tHaT tHeRe'S sO mUcH tO dO, iT's ThAt YoU hAd ThE oPtIoN tO wAiT aRoUnD aLl DaY" and yes I am serious. Which, Elder Scrolls Arena and especially Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall did it way better years before, and of course Morrowind and Oblivion are - are, present tense - light years ahead of the third game despite them coming out during George Bush Jr's first (2002) and second (2006) terms. And I can prove it. Objectively, I can prove, right now, in two sentences, that the Elder Scrolls games are superior to every Shenmue game. For the first two verses the first two and the fourth, they have fast travel. And every ES game has the "Wait" feature. Something need to wait until next day? Cool. Just wait for 8 hours, the game skips ahead and there ya go. I dunno if the new one has either or both features, but considering that reception is hilariously lukewarm with maybe six extremely fanatical clowns who insist that no we just don't understand it man, even after the Epic Games BULLSHIT where they literally robbed everybody who kickstarted it for Steam keys - considering all of that, I do not care if this is better than other Shenmue games and shame on the publishers for pooping on the fans, taking advantage of their nostalgia and pooping out this game. Hopefully in twenty years the fourth game will come out and they'll hint at finishing the series sometime before the inevitable heat death of the universe.
This is the entire reason I've always put off playing Shenmue. When someone explains it, it sounds super neat. But then you remember it came out in the days of the Dreamcast, and half the stuff people are talking about probably don't even work right by today's standards. It's one of those games that's probably tons of fun if you played it originally and have some nostalgia for it. But if you're brand new to it, it's gonna bore the fuck out of you and annoy you when the controls go wonky.
TXF I played it a year ago it was actually fun the combats cool and the story telling good thought the voice acting is garbage it’s garbage in a funny ways we’re you will be laughing at the voice acting shemu 1 was a Kickstarter I think which explains why the acting is bad
The main issue is waiting around for 7 hours in game that took fek ing ages to do and it’s like go here at 9pm you have to wait a literally hour irl as the games takes a hour to get to the next day and there was no forward time option either though it added to the immersion minus the tanky movement controls took me a 2 mins to get out of the house 😂 and in the end I really enjoyed it it was free on Xbox at the time (remaster version) so I yanked it
@@ghostlyswat12 Kickstarter didn't exist when Shenmue was made. It was developed by Sega's in-house development team and, at the time it was created, was the most expensive video game ever developed.
Shenmue II manages to realize a great deal of the promise that the original left on the cutting room floor, and is the bigger reason people are excited for a third. Doesn't fix the controls or anything, but there's much more of a story, a much bigger, more interesting world, and some emotional range.
I still think is so cool that the game doesn't revolve around Ryu. You could miss an appointment, because you lost track of time playing Hang On at the arcade, so the character waiting to ambush you would just bugger off instead of patiently waiting forever.
Never played the original, but Shenmue 2 on Xbox was one of the most memorable and engaging experiences I ever had with a game. Top-notch and right along there with KOTOR.
Not joking, Recettear was probably the best indie game i've played so far. The combat is smooth like the best Blizzard games and when you think the game lack depth and you go wandering into the seemingly kiddy pool suddenly you realize that you are diving in a freaking open ocean. Very character plays distinctly different, there are tons of crafting recipes and even small stuff like the wallpaper in your shop can have an impact on the people you attract. The game is insane for a game thhat looks so simple from the outside...
I subscribe to channels to give them support in that way, but since I know the posting schedule for Yahtzee I generally know when to look. Beyond that I don't bother with the notification system for most channels that I follow.
I never played Shenmue 1, but I played the sequel and really loved it. Of course this was like 15 years ago, so I'm sure it doesn't hold up great; but back then, it was a really amazing experience.
I was just more irritated with how much better the sound was in the Sega Dreamcast version. They made the Graphics detailed in the HD version apparently but, it's like going from Alfa-Rameo to a Mitsubishi and all of the people who are acting like this is ruining the Shenmue Three Kickstarter need to cram it. I put a load of hard earned money into it too and still I'm disappointed I am happy to see these critics be vocal. It isn't like pointing out the faults that never got polished out in the19 years of time it took them to rerelease them is going to make the diehard fans hate the old game.
2:34 Well at least there's an argument to be made that they are doing something. There was one guy at the start of Black Mesa who, given a chance, will tell Gordon Freeman that he's incredibly busy while sitting in the waiting area of Anomalous Materials reception doing absolutely bugger all. Not even reading or checking his phone, just sitting there doing nothing.
All fair points, Yahtzee. In fact, _Shenmue_ was originally going to be a spinoff of _Virtua Fighter_ , which is why Ryo looks like that game's Akira. Thus, instead of a spotty open-world RPG with a decent combat engine, what you have is a decent fighting game with a spotty open-world RPG attached to it. Bluntly, for its day, _Shenmue_ was groundbreaking. 3D models that could actually move their fingers instead of having paralyzed hands! A day/night cycle with weather! NPCs that don't just stand in one place handing out quests, but actually have a daily routine! Weather that follows the seasons! Pulling off complicated, cinematic moves by following button prompts! A village with a day/night cycle! (Which, admittedly, just means that stores are open during the day while bars are open at night.) But, well, time marches on. All of that stuff has been done, and done better, by the games that followed after. _Shenmue_ , in short, is influential for being _first_ and not for being _best_ .

Not really true, of course, but I'm sure Yahtzee sucked at Virtua Fighter, so the full moveset and parry mechanics would be lost on him.
@@BillkwandoOr maybe Shenmue is just shit.
Am watching this on New Year’s Eve (sick) and this one’s animations are particularly hilarious. I’m gassing over here at “Impolite Girls” and “Bean me in the chops”. Just brilliant.
And I mean, all the other examples you said for series to hope for a continuation to are also on my list, but at least this one's been explicitly announced.
that is pretty emotional Yahtzee, that is a lot of anger to have when the machine doesn't give you the snacks you paid for.
Well said, and true. First time I ever saw a squat toilet. Didn't even know that was a thing before that.

Quite so.
Almost had a stroke reading this
The secret to enjoying Shenmue unironically:
Step 1: Turn the voices to Japanese so that you can hear everyone emote properly and Ryo emote at all.
Ryo is just as emotionless in Japanese as in English.

I disagree. While he was still stoic, he had a lot more nuance when expressing anger, grief, embarrassment, friendliness, etc...
Yes, Shenmue is basically an adventure game but with more exploration and fewer puzzles.

Yeah honestly I have no idea either, I remember he used to work for them but no idea if this is a real beef or just some joke I missed.

That's only because of Epic Games though. Us PS4 Bois are still good
@@JakobatHeart Being an Epic Games Exclusive on PC. Epic Games is known for giving people's information to the Chinese
Wow Escapist is still around, that's awesome.

I mean, there is a Shenmue 2 already available for you to check out to see if you can get a better idea of why people might want a Shenmue 3.
I actually really love Shenmue, but I understand the points he made.
I love the shade Lyle and Yahtzee are throwing at each other
“Not enough forklifts 0/10”

Not even reading or checking his phone, just sitting there doing nothing.

Damn that destructiod diss at the end
(Which, admittedly, just means that stores are open during the day while bars are open at night.)
But, well, time marches on. All of that stuff has been done, and done better, by the games that followed after. _Shenmue_ , in short, is influential for being _first_ and not for being _best_ .
The beef between Lyle Rath and Yahtzee Croshaw just became a thing, and I myself am loving it. I've got my popcorn ready and my heart set on collecting the teeth that either or both will leave on the floor of the arena for a souvenir
