    Honestly, when I first played Shemue it took me a while to realise the Locals weren't all supposed to be creepily hiding something from you and were actually just really weirdly voice acted rather than talking in comically suspicious, hesitant voices.

      Find it pretty hypocritical that he throws shade at other people, since he contradicts himself constantly throughout his video history, complaining about things in one game that he praises another game for doing the exact same way.
      Oh, he's also the guy who wrote three fairly entertaining adventure games, the X Days a X series...then ruined one with the most horribly written, terrible, unnecessary sex scene that even Ride to hell would have been ashamed to do...all to spit in the face of the fans of his games who genuinely wanted a new entry in the series.
      He's an entitled, totally socially unaware horse's ass with the talent of a dead zebra rotting in the sun.
      And by the by, in case anyone tries to call me a Shenmue or Sega fanboy...I don't like Shenmue and only tolerate Sega because of Atlus and NiGHTS.
      The balls on this soft-skulled dumbass should be documented by science. His stupidity creates a black hole that destroys any talent or creativity it encounters.

    Nostalgia is a powerful thing (along with context). I replayed it again recently and shattered all my bleary eyed delusions. The issue is expectation. It wasn't the fact open worlds didn't have anything to do in it, it was the fact you actually COULD explore a 3D open world. It wasn't the fact you had to wait hours for things to happen, it was the fact you COULD actually wait around for X hour for things to happen. Also the graphics were a huge thing. Nowadays we know the paltry offerings Shenmue offers is pretty shit, but back then comparisons didn't exist as it was the only kid on the block, so the thrill came from exploring all the craziness, wondering what will happen round the next corner at certain times, since we didn't have any online walkthroughs. Nowadays we walk round the corner and there better damn well be something to see, or we've wasted our time!
    It's kinda like that dinosaur tech demo on the PS1; when you saw it, you were amazed by the polygons and raved about it to others. Now looking back, it was just a walking dionsaur and did buggerall. The tech did however then spark new ideas and gaming. It's still a bit shit though.

    • @kebm1388
      @kebm1388 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      imo Shenmue still looks great, especially the new port. Yeah it's not a modern AAA title but it doesn't need to be to look good. It has just enough polygons to not look archaic.

      @ChristophBrinkmann 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      I"t wasn't the fact you had to wait hours for things to happen, it was the fact you COULD actually wait around for X hour for things to happen. "
      More like you're FORCED to wait for hours for things to happen. As in, you don't have a choice.
      Daggerfall came out in 1996, and it too was open world. Difference there is if you had to wait for hours, you could actually skip those hours if you wanted to get on with things. That's 3 years before Shenpooey Poo, so the devs had no excuse. Especially now, almost 2 decades after the fact where they could've easily did a proper remake.

I think the level design is still fantastic, an actual architect designed the buildings based on a real area so it really feels like you're walking through an Asian street in the 1980's, I think it's awesome. Also, when it becomes nighttime and the bars open and neon lights come on, just great.

    The secret to enjoying Shenmue unironically:
    Step 1: Turn the voices to Japanese so that you can hear everyone emote properly and Ryo emote at all. The sound quality is still a bit off, but I think that was a stylistic choice to make it sound like an 80's television drama.
    Step 2: Treat it as an Open World Point And Click Adventure with Beat 'Em Up elements, more akin to something like Gabriel Knight or Laura Bow than Yakuza, only designed by a relatively sane person so the puzzle solutions don't require brain damage to solve.
    Step 3: Explore. In addition to finding the odd music track or martial arts move lying around or for sale, you can also occasionally find alternate, rational, solutions to puzzles or skip steps during the investigation.
    Step 4: Turn brightness all the way up for the Stealth sections. Because, seriously, fuck the flashlight's cone of vision.

    I wouldn't be surprised if they had to have the voices for characters filmed on separate days, even down to minute roles like people you pass on the street.
    There's so much dialogue where people respond or react to whatever part of the story you're at that I'm surprised they managed to fit a game alongside all the talking.
    Like, you could go around and talk to everyone about one topic, make literally one step of progress on the storyline and suddenly the entire town has something to say about it.
    I can recognize Shenmue's flaws, and how it's not a very good game from multiple standpoints, but I still find it charming and like it regardless.
    Whether that makes it a guilty pleasure or I'm just selectively accepting of it, but it doesn't stop me from loving it. I'm really looking forward to the continuation of the series.
    And I mean, all the other examples you said for series to hope for a continuation to are also on my list, but at least this one's been explicitly announced.

    All fair points, Yahtzee. In fact, _Shenmue_ was originally going to be a spinoff of _Virtua Fighter_ , which is why Ryo looks like that game's Akira. Thus, instead of a spotty open-world RPG with a decent combat engine, what you have is a decent fighting game with a spotty open-world RPG attached to it.
    Bluntly, for its day, _Shenmue_ was groundbreaking. 3D models that could actually move their fingers instead of having paralyzed hands! A day/night cycle with weather! NPCs that don't just stand in one place handing out quests, but actually have a daily routine! Weather that follows the seasons! Pulling off complicated, cinematic moves by following button prompts! A village with a day/night cycle! (Which, admittedly, just means that stores are open during the day while bars are open at night.)
    But, well, time marches on. All of that stuff has been done, and done better, by the games that followed after. _Shenmue_ , in short, is influential for being _first_ and not for being _best_ .

It's one of those games that's probably tons of fun if you played it originally and have some nostalgia for it. Even back then Shenmue split the gaming community and because of its flaws even almost 20 years ago people hated the series for the tedious waiting around and life simulation aspect. But it also had so many innovative ideas and while it is indeed pointless to pick everything up and move it around for the time it came out the sheer fact you could do it was so awesome and made you feel for the first time you were in a real open world. By todays standards it is of course laughably small and you can't do much at all but back then before all the 3D GTAs and stuff .. phew I mean Sega didn't bankrupt itself for nothing Shenmue was so huge and inventive it sucked up more money than it could every hope to bring in again.

    I think the reason why people love Shenmue and wanted a sequel is probably because most of them haven't been able to play it for years. When I was a kid, we usually either wore out our older consoles or we saved up enough money that we could afford the next gen system after we sold our last one. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the Shenmue fans either ended up selling their dreamcast and PS2s as kids to afford the new hotness, or their systems just stopped working. You have these memories of the game being fun, but you haven't played it in like a decade so you want a new one so you can actually play it again. Plus, the only context you probably have is from watching people play it on TH-cam, people who kept a working system with Shenmue and probably play it every now and then cause they stayed infatuated with it.
    Also, I've never played either Shenmue, but in Shenmue 2 you can race ducks against a Penguin, so Shenmue 2 is definitely a good game.
