  • The Lenovo Legion Go is a gaming handheld to rival both the Asus ROG Ally and the Nintendo Switch! With the Steam Deck OLED released shortly after, does the Legion Go stand a chance against so many big competitors?
We’ll also be comparing it to the ROG Ally ourselves to quickly and loosely determine who is king of battery life, performance, and device design.
But wait, there are so many gaming handhelds coming out. How do I know which one is the one for me? We’ll take a closer look at that question, and try to come to grips with how you can make an informed choice!

Dude, this video was amazing. I kept watching it and I’d catch myself thinking this was a huge channel with thousands of subs. I think your content is great and well organized. I loved the “real life” take and just talking to us viewers as if you were a friend. That sort of thing is very refreshing. I ordered a Legion Go and should be picking it up this week. I bought it knowing that it’s not finished but liked what it has to offer so far. Seems like you have the same view I do. Keep up the great work and excited to see this channel grow!

Power bank solves the allys problems though… the original steam deck, the ally, and the legion go all have pretty bad battery life so most people would get power banks for them 🤷‍♂️

The additional cost that goes into ROG ally and Legion Go is that windows license. As a business user, the legion go has revolutionized my time gaming while also working. Doing commercial drone piloting I can remain connected to my hotspot and upload my photos for rendering while also gaming on the legion go. I even have a pocket keyboard / touchpad / portable mouse I use for small optimized email writing before I jump back into a game. It’s lowered the weight of my travel bag to carry a laptop. It was well worth the price. The basic emulators I play (effectively stopping at the Dreamcast generation) run flawlessly.

I was about to get a SteamDeck OLED until I started researching the Ally and Legion Go options. I'm without a doubt going with the Lenovo Go and even thinking about running a 7800xt egpu to turn it into a decent desktop. The fact I can run Adobe software on it (just Windows 11 in general) and use it as a tablet, handheld and a desktop is what sold me on it.

@Joseph Thanks a lot for this great Video! And thanks for making finally clear, why the Ally outperforms the Go (according to Benchmarks only at lower wattages)... I wasn't aware the Ally would go up in wattages so much by itsself! That explaines much! I was always wondering why the Legion Go beeing the faster device on paper was outperformed by the Ally! At the end I prefer how the Go handles this staying more true to it's chosen wattage. But I have to say that in performance mode also the Go goes up in wattage. Especially when being plugged in, which then is fine.
I also heard from other TH-camrs the Ally clocks it's CPU higher and therefore is faster at lower wattages. Which probably also comes with the higher power draw. Also I'm really not shore if Go's RAM is already running at 7500 Mhz speed as Lenovo (Ben Myers) just wrote with the next BIOS update coming in 1 to 2 weeks we will receive an option to switch between 6000 and 7500 MHz...
Anyway besides generally being really happy with the device, I'm still really disapointed on how slowly they bring out their official graphics drivers, which is really shameful... They already promised two times there would be an official new driver, but it still wasn't published after over 2 weeks! I wonder why for BIOS, firmware and LegionSpace they are so constantly dropping updates, and why for the graphics drivers it takes them sooo unnecessarily long!!! Anyway I couldn't wait any longer really getting bored by it, and now also am using the manual update... Even if it was designed for the 7840U chips...

I'm surprised this is only your fourth video. I was shocked when you said that in the end. It is so polished. Did you have another channel before this?
Good video, I'm really torn which one to pick or just pick the Ocolus 3.
I do like the legion it really seems to have great potential but it seems like most reviewers prefer Asus.
Which is too bad since Asus has really bad QA issues. For the past 10 years I have had 5 or 6 Asus computers that had problems and had to be sent for repair. (Granted their support is really good but still don't want the hassle)
While i have had 4 or 5 Lenovo computers and have never had an issue with any of them.

Thank you! I definitely want to upload a video I feel like I did my very best on. I did not have a channel before this, so also the time between videos is me still learning editing and how to even write/shoot videos like these. I do watch a ton of TH-cam tho, so maybe using a copycat jutsu of sorts. Either way, thanks a bunch 🫶
I’d say go with your heart on this one, a gaming handheld and a VR headset have very different use cases. I don’t have a headset myself, but I’ve used them and can see why it’s a hard choice.
At the end of the day, I hope the video at least helped inform your decision, and that you’re happy with whatever the device you get is 🫰🏻

Steam Deck OLED: 720P vs the 1440p on the legion GO, Slower Cpu than Legion go, much slower ram, 2-3x battery life on the oled, 30-50% less performance, Out of the box only can play Steam games, No detachable controllers, Slightly better looking screen but much smaller. 144 hz vs 90 hz on steam deck. So knowing this, which is the better console? All of the issues you are listing off are easily fixed with an update, the console came out a month ago give them time. Also the Ally does not use the same chip in all devices, the cheaper ROG ally uses the normal z1 non extreme version. If you want 1tb and the z1 extreme, you are paying the same cost as the legion GO. Also the user has a drastic impact on how well they are able to optimize the device. Most people are not going to get the full performance out of this device without time and experience at least. I am playing Starfield on ultra settings at 1080p getting 40-60 fps with proper optimizations. So the game looks better than it does on a PS5 and performs about the same at a lower resolution.

I definitely don't want to but I love the steam deck OLED weight, ergo, battery health, fan noise and speakers, the screen is good now but I'm not blown away as I thought I would be... I love the legion go for what it does and can do but battery health and ergonomics is kinda weird maybe I have to figure out a better way to hold it but the sharp ish edges really push into my hand when I'm gripping it like crazy playing ghost runner. Dead zoning and software needs work. And I'm waiting for the 6gb vram bios to play some other games. It's honestly difficult and I would give one to my sister to use it when I'm not but she breaks everything. If I can balance both and feel like it's worth the deep wallet hit.

steam deck: lost me on linux because if i finish a singlaplayer game i want to be able to run trainers/mods on it and most of them are created for windows so it will be easier to mod.
Asus rog: lost me because of sd card potential issue, design and color and battery life.
Lenovo currently is worth it if i find it on sale and it's honestly something that can do everything and even after 2-4 years when something better comes out. this still is a tablet with windows11, something i wanted microsoft to do for a long time.. and i can still steam link to my pc and use the lenovo in low power.
it's an amazing review, only something maybe i would include or make a video about is how easy it is to upgrade the ssd and repair, Asus rog is the easiest to replace the analog and ssd, legion go is not that easy and it will be more expensive to fix replace the analog, also the sound or maybe i missed that section if you talked about it. anyway good review subbed and hope to see more reviews!

The Legion Go has significantly improved in performance. The Ally was running better 15 watts and lower than the Legion Go because it has a lower frequency speed on the RAM. The Legion Go using 7500mt frequency at lower than 20 watts will have the system down clock the GPU due to not enough power to go to both the RAM and the GPU. Lowering the memory frequency on the Legion Go to 6400mt which is ROG Ally frequency will have the GPU clock go back up. Legion Go performs the same if not better than the ROG Ally now with the newest drivers and the option to switch between RAM frequencies based on your wattage. There is the also bonus that since the type of RAM the Legion Go uses is more energy efficient, the battery life when set to 6400mt gives it even more battery life than the ROG Ally.

The one thing that is holding these windows handheld is lack of collaboration. If asus had shared their optimisations with lenovo, or Microsoft made a Handheld mode into windows, a lot of the problems will be nonexistent. Steam Deck managed to have the optimisations it have because it’s platform is Open Source, someone in his basement can fix something on the Linux kernal, it will help the entire Linux OS and hence it helps the Deck itself. Nobody is holding their work only for them, it’s shared with the community…
If windows did anything similar like that, windows handheld will be so damn good… Damn I really want these windows handhelds to be good.
