The most versatile in the United States would have to be the 30.06, which will take anything in North America, period. It's been around since before Ron was born (yes, it's really that old) and it still works like it always has.
I'd say with the more modern bullets and powders available now it's even more versatile then when it came out!😋
Yes, as I remember Mom and Dad put the then new 30-06 cartridge atop my first birthday cake and lit it. What a blast that party was!

I agree with you 100%, I'm in Canada me and most my friends and family have 30-06 few have a 308. But I also love my 270 and 243.
@@markchapman2585 I live in Canada as well. 30-06 is a staple. I see a lot of 303 british though as well.
I would vote for the 30-06...even more so if you are a reloader.
Thank you Ron for another pleasant evening about firearms and all the things around them. What is a very nice feature of the older manuals in addition to possibly having cartridge loading information for cartridges that may not be in the new manuals, is that they have loading information for bullets that may not be being made any more or have had the name changed. I have several boxes of Hornady, Sierra and Nosler bullets that are not listed in some of the online manuals for those brands, but I reloaded them regularly before I lost my old manuals and reloading logs. The most shooting caliber in Germany is the 308 but I think the 7x57, 7x64 or 8x57IS would take a good place as versatile cartridge.
7x64 is a really nice round.

The .225 Winchest was introduced in 1964 and the parent case was the old .219 Zipper. The .225 winchester pushes a 40gr bullet at 4020fps and the 22-250 Remington was introduced as a factory cartridge in 1965. The 22-250 pushes a 40gr bullet 4224fps and the parent case for it was the 250-3000 Savage.
Where did u come up with the fps on both cartridges from just curious
Good info, Jim. O more interest to most might be the MV of 55-grain bullets in each. Via handloading safely, expect 3,500 from the 225 Win., 3,700 from 22-250, 3,850 from 220 Swift. The obsolete 219 Zipper was made from 30-30 Win. case, but in the 225, Winchester turned the rim down to .473", same as 30-06 so it fits bolt faces of that family. 225 is, like the 220 Swift, considered a semi-rimmed design. Cool stuff, eh? I don't think any major manufacturer has chambered 225 Win, since the mid 1970s!

I used to have a 225 Winchester it was a great gun and yes it is nearly identical to the 22 250 except for it being a rimmed case. The original hot Western loads where 55 grains at 3650 feet per second. Later on they slowed them down just a little bit because of all the handloaders burning them up just like they did with the 220 Swift. A lot of people don't know about them because they were kind of a flash-in-the-pan even though it is a great round, the 22 250 had too much time in saddle before the 225 was introduced. Mine was about a 65 or 66 Model. Unfired with a 22-inch Barrel. Unfired and I had about eight boxes of ammunition for it but I sold it to a friend. I just couldn't bring myself to shoot it.
love the closing comment about the books, look for them all the time, and had a few others look also,, if we see them we get them,, reloading, hunting, guns , fishing, even a 250 page book on just knots. lent it to a friend who lost his cable and internet,, he read that and practiced all winter.
Good suggestion on the reloading manuals Ron. I recently purchased a used 338 RCM and if not for one of my old manuals, I wouldn't have loading data for it.
.22LR is the most versatile cartridge since it has taken everything from mice to elephants and everything inbetween.

I have one that my father built many years ago.. He was a gunsmith /custom gun builder. It is on a low wall action.. very accurate.
As for "most versitile cartridge,
My opinon: (large grain of salt)
Pistol Caliber: 22lr
Intermediate Caliber: 5.56mm (not 223)
Full Rifle Caliber: 7.62x51 (or 30-06 depending on neccesity)
Shotgun Caliber: 12ga
Note: I did not include dangerous game or long range calibers as I feel I don't have enough experience in these fields.
But if you put a gun to my head I would say:
Long Range: 338 Laupua, 375 or 408 Cheytac
Dangerous Game: 375 H&H, or 416 Rigby
Again these are my personal opinions take them with a grain of salt.
I was in the local gun shop last week and they had an .225 Winchester on the used rack for sale. First time I ever seen and handled one.
I've got a Winchester 670 in .225 Winchester but I VERY rarely shoot it. I've got around 35 brass cases for that gun and its darned hard (or expensive) to find more :).
In the old continent we have 6.5x55SE, 7x64, 8x57JS, 9.2x62, 9,2x66SAKO and other calibres that drop major of game. Appreciate reviews of these
Have to agree 30-06 would be it if I could only have one hunting rifle. Though .308 and 7mm 08 would be good second choices I would think. Yes on the hand loading for sure, but may or not be doable for everyone. Good info from Ron as usual.

Speaking of the .225 Win, makes me think of the .256 Win Mag & how I’d love to find one in a “bolt”, gun. I have a Tikka “Forest”, in .260 Rem & it’s a great rifle! Wood stock, clean lines, 3-lug bolt & 1-length action regardless of short or long actions to handle ALL cartridges w/o changing the build of the rifle. I’d like to get my hands of the new Sako S20 Bolt-Modular type rifle set up in a 6.5x55mm Swede. When I bought my 1st “Deer Rifle”, I looked at a Winchester Model 70 in .270 & a Remington Model 700 in .30-06’ & both were selling for $350. I chose the Remington 700 in the 06’ & have loved that gun & caliber all my life and would never part w/it. To me it is THE caliber for North America, but not sure about the “World”, as it depends on game pursued & the person behind the rifle as many things are capable from any caliber if the “shooter”, knows their gun & where to put that bullet all in the nano-second you have to decide when your quarry pops out for the shot.
Both my grandfather and my dad lived through the great depression in the 30s. Though my dad [now 96] was just a kid at the time he still hunted food with his dad. They had many types of firearms but both swore the 30-06 was the best all around cartridge. It can be loaded for elk all the way down to loads for rabbits. But a shotgun would be an excellent choice too.

Just wanted to add that I think it would depend on your geographic location too. If youre up north, you might want something for larger game. But if youre in an area where the largest game is white tail or smaller, then you wouldnt need a large caliber.

I was shooting at a gravel pit a little north of Fairbanks, AK and a guy showed up with a Chapuis Double in 375H&H. I had just finished shooting my Ruger No. 1 in 375 and he let me take a few shots. He had reloaded some cast boolits at 38-55 velocities and they were very mild. Beautiful rifle as well. My vote would be the 375 or maybe the 45-70. You can load anything from 145gr collar button gallery loads to some real shoulder stompers.

Yes Ron, just held my 93 yr. old cousin's model 70 225 Win a couple of weeks ago. He swears by it for anything out to 300 yards or so. But I have yet to actually shoot it.
I've used a 7 mag for a good all-rounder for years, but after some slow deaths of moose and bison, I've decided I like 7 mag for elk and smaller, 35 Whelen (or .338, .358, 9.3 ect) for the bigger critters
35 Whelen is king for all the big critters. In North America!
curious why not stop in the middle an go 300 win mag? slightly more recoil than 7mm rem mag but less than 338 wm

the 204 is pretty handy but not on bigger game.

Ron I recommend Ryan M. Clecker's book, "Long Range Shooting Handbook". He is a former U.S. Army sniper and really knows his stuff. Anyway, on pages 159-160, Cleckner explains the "Coriolis Effect" very well. This is part of chapter 10 "Ballistics" which explains this and other forces on a bullet. Highly recommend Clicker's book He makes all the information simple to understand and interesting to read. By the way, I enjoy your videos. They are informative and fun.

Great video. The coriolis effect is basically that the target moves along with the surface of the earth as the bullet travels through the air, bullet unaffected by the earth's rotation, it's mostly irrelevant within 1000 or so yards but the longer the bullet flight time increases the more it comes into play and would change with every change of angle against the direction of rotation, Just my understanding of it. 308 gets my vote for versatility, and I'm not a diehard 30 cal fan, the stuff is just everywhere, reasonably priced and many varied loads available from 147-180gr. A bit much for small game and barely enough for very large but can do the job.
I love my .308. It even shoots 125 grain very accurately with very little recoil.
The 225 was the 30-30 case necked to 22 and blown out (think 219 improved Zipper) then the rim was reduced in thickness and diameter to match the 308 bolt face. In addition to the model 70 the inexpensive Savage model 340 was chambered for it.

Straight pull rifles "Savage Impulse"
Correct Ron, the Savage Impulse has the same system as the Heym rifles. I'm using the Savage Impulse for driven hunting in Europe (wild boar mostly) with very good success. Straight pull of the Savage works perfect and I had good success with it. For driven hunt in Europe - a lot of straight pull rifle are used, like Blaser R93 or R8, Haym or in this days also Savage Impulse.

I've always liked Switzerland for the sole purpose that you guys have a strong gun culture, and are one of the only actual free nations. Have gun control measures begun over there yet, or is your right to have guns still pretty strong?

The Coriolis effect is real, but only at extreme long range. It may not even be that big of a deal at 1000 yards. Shooting east or west, your bullet can be high or low. Shooting north and south, your bullet can be off left or right. I'd have to check with some ELR shooters to see when it really affects your shot. I don't shoot far enough or well enough to worry about it. lol
i'm with you on that...500yds. or under..i really don't think this is going to effect me much.....not that i'm sayin i'm a good shot at that range...where i hunt rare if ever anything over 200 yds most is 100 or less...
Me too! I’m out West too and 99% of rifles will shoot a lot better than I can. The eyeballs ain’t what they were 45 years ago!
With a 308 diameter bullet that weighs 190 grains, has a G1 bc of about .490, driven at 2700 fps, at the Equator, full value will give a deviation of about 4 inches at 1000 yards due to the Coriolis effect. This is generally not enough to worry about for all but the most extreme shooters.

Same here. About 300 y/m is my self imposed limit on living game, "respect for quarry stuff". 🏞
About the corriolis effect; if you consider the path of anything as inertial and straight line, as the Earth rotates under that object the path will “appear”to be deflected to the right in the northern hemisphere. The effect is more pronounced near the equator due to the higher rotational velocity.
I have a small stack of loading manuals of which the oldest is the Speer #1 copywrite 1954. The only use I have for my newer manuals is they have information on the newer powder choices. As far as load data I find the old manuals more useful than the newer ones. If I need a load for a .25 Souper I can find it or a .25 Neidner. The Newton cartridges are interesting and I'd love to try them but I've never seen them other than in these old manuals.
Hey Ron, you're missing the point. The most "versatile " cartridge by far is the .458 Winchester Magnum or the .458 Lott! I have been using the .458's for over 40 yrs and have killed woodchucks, deer, antelope, caribou, moose, bear, Waterbuffalo, Cape Buffalo and even rabbits and partridge by loading the straight cases as shotshells! The .458"s can be loaded down to 45-70 power, and loaded with 250gr bullets at over 3000fps! Truly, mice to elephants!

Coriolis effect ( like all physics) always affects the projectile regardless the direction or range fired up to orbital or escape velocity of the earth (spaceships have to account for it on reentry) sure up close it might be literally microns but it is there and out to 1000 yards with some slower ammo it's pretty notable.
I believe I have those same editions of those old loading manuals that you showed there lol.
Backfire channel reviewed some Tika guns. Can’t remember what he said. But to me he’s like my fellow millennial version of Spomer and I really enjoy both of their channels a lot when it comes to these type of subjects
A friend of mine in NC noticed a bullet hole in the sliding-glass door of their family room, in their baby's play area. They live in heavily wooded area, so I was surprised that a tree had not stopped the bullet. The fact that it was in the baby's play area is what really shook them up.
Smaller bullets may not ricochet at all if it misses trees and branches, plus even some 9mm handgun loads can go through your home and into your neighbors. I live in a state that just allowed the straight wall cartridges like the 450 Bushmaster, that's probably as close as we'll getting to a bottleneck centerfire.
@@Suplexcityme316 In my area of NC, bottlenecked cartridges are allowed and people who live next to a wooded area sometimes have treestands literally in their backyards. The big issue is when a new house is built in a formerly wooded area. People who have hunted on a property all their lives may not know it is there. I live in a relatively new subdivision and can still see three old treestands within 100 ft of our property line. Luckily, our development is big enough that the neighbors know about it.
I have shot a .225 Win. Have dies for it too, but we are a Swift family. Run it a grain or two below max, and the throat holds out for a lot longer.
I’ve a 7-08. I like the barns ttsx, but all I can find is 120grn. I know that’s good for deer and under. Should I go heavier for elk?
I was going to get a Tikka T3x but got a Sauer 100 instead. I think it has some better features. There are more after market products for the Tikka Though.

I can agree with your readers' selection of 30-06 Springfield as an excellent example of a very versatile cartridge; however, I would argue that, here in the lower 48 states, the 357 Maximum is the most versatile rifle cartridge. This cartridge, similar in performance to 30-30 Winchester, is excellent for whitetail deer and feral hogs. A rifle so chambered can also load 357 Magnum, 38 Special and 38 Short Colt which can easily take rabbits without wasting meat. Such a rifle would be a lightweight four season rifle. A single shot or modified lever action would be all the rifle any outdoorsman would ever need. There's something to talk about.
357 maximum is only marginally better than the 350 Legend. And it’s not going to handle western hunting very well at all. Maybe in the south/east. With 30-06 there is a projectile and powder for everything, and I do mean everything.
Edit: after checking the numbers again, 357 Max isn’t even capable of the same performance as 350 legend due to case capacity and SAAMI pressure specs. So no definitely not for the entirety of the lower 48.

Hey Ron I've been watching these shows for about a year now and have become accustomed to checking in every few days.
But today I come with a question for you. There is a company that chambers the magnum research bfr revolvers from the 500 magnum and a few more cartridges in there new cartridge called the 500 bushwhacker, the creator has a TH-cam channel and stated the spec's of it, and it is absurd! A 410 grain bullet at 2400 fps out of a 10.5 in barrel. 5200 foot pounds out of a handgun is extremely high and too me is higher than a lot of north American hunting rifles even for big bears. So do you think that this should be put in a rifle? I think that a lever action with a longer barrel would be a true buffalo and plains game bulldozer.( With the break they but on the pistol the say that someone comfortable with the recoil of the 454 casull would be fine with its recoil )

I have seen the 225 (rimmed) Winchester case, cartridge and a rifle but have never shot one. I think the rimmed case might contribute to the low demand as it MIGHT ( supposition) limit how the magazine works and feeds. You'd have to be careful on loading things into the magazine in order to keep trouble from popping up.
Most versatile cartridge? That'll be tough. It can come down to where you live and what you shoot in your area. It's pretty tough to shoot varmints or predators with a 375H&H. lol Maybe a 243/6mm, or 2506, or maybe a 6.5 Creedmoor or 260 Remington. The 243/6mm might be a little small for bigger game, and the 6.5CM might be a little big for varmints. No matter what, you'll have to compromise somewhere.
I am a han louder. 280 love it. 708 is good. 25 06 love it too.
The only thing with the Savage Impulse is that its HEEEAVY. On the order of around 9lbs! The Tikkas are great but youll 100% need to replace the buttpad (or what they’re calling a buttpad. Lol). Its hard as a brick and with the lightweight-ness of tikkas itll get your attention. Other than that, buy with no worries.
Tikka has a 2 lug bolt I have 2 tikka rifles 6.5x55 and 223rem great rifles love them only problem is the plastic magazines are not good at all and after a while start failing not cycling the 2nd round pushed up at angle 223 is really bad for this I'm on my 3rd magazine only problem with the tikka
Ron I see where you're going with the idea of the 12gauge versatility but I would also argue depending on your meaning of "versatile" I would argue that the 20gauge would be the more versatile because for those who are recoil sensitive would be more effective with it over the 12gauge and even those who are used to the recoil would be even that much better.
Fair point, but you can shoot 1-ounce and even 7/8-ounce loads in the 12 ga. Given the same payload and MV and gun weight, recoil would be the same.
The atmosphere is indeed rotating at the same speed of the Earth. Think about it this way: the circumference of the Earth is 24,901 miles. At the equator, the rotation speed at the surface is therefore 1037 miles per hour (in order for it to make one complete revolution every 24 hours). If the atmosphere wasn't rotating along with the surface, you'd feel it cruising by at that speed as wind of the same speed, but you don't. The wind we do feel is nowhere near 1000+ mph and is instead the variance FROM the rotation speed caused by other factors (largely the uneven heating of the atmosphere by the sun).

I believe you are mixing up spin drift and coriolis.
Spin drift is the spin of of the bullet cutting through the air causing a left or right side spin. Right vs left twist rates and the speed of the twist are directly related.
Coriolis is earths rotation, bullet momentum and air drag. More useful for artillery guns shooting 15km/miles, then for little pew pews
Ron the only thing that has kept me from buying a tikka t3x is they only come in 14 inch plus length of pull ,,every one I’ve measured has been 14 and a half inches length of pull ,,,that’s not good with a lot of clothes on. A guy can order a savage model 11 with a junior stock at 13 inch length of pull and keep the 14 inch stock that comes with it and have both stocks and the gun for two hundred less than a tikka with one stock.
35 Whelen much more versatile than you might think!
Can use 357mag revolver bullets for small game right on up to 275gr bullets for dangerous game! Easy to load anything with 4064 powder and any cases from the 30-06 cartridge family.
I went from a .243 to a 30-06 to a 300 win. I wouldn't hesitate to use either 30 cal on anything on any continent with the exception of maybe Africa. And with the Barnes TSX, are more than capable dispatchers of varmints with attitudes.
7:09 It's sah-bow, or saa-bow or darn close to it. It is exactly the same word as in 'sabotage', so pronounce it like the first two syllables, saa-bow (tahj).
Yes, the 12 ga. is the most versatile firearm. In their early years, when money was tight, my uncles owned 12 ga. shotguns...period. They worked for everything from squirrels and rabbits to deer and hogs. I well remember the day the first .30-30 came into the family, followed many years later by a .30-06. Along the way, a couple of my cousins got .22s. Otherwise, it was shotguns.
Listening to your explanation of the Eötvös effect, if that explains High or Low when shooting East/West ... then doesn't it stand to reason that coriolis effect would explain "Windage" (Left/Right) drift if shooting North/South .. 🤔 (at EXTREME distance of course)
Question: I have read some on the so called "knock off, or knock out, factor", especially hunting big game. Is the Taylor KO factor, the TKOF formula, still of value/relevance today?

Good question, Tonny. I don't believe the TKO formula was ever valid except when applied to brain shooting elephant. That is what his formula measured -- the bullet energy required to stun or knock out an elephant with a near miss of the brain. As he and most commercial elephant hunters (poachers in his case since he was reportedly often unlicensed or "off the reservation") learned, any bullet would fell the biggest elephant if it hit the brain. Bell killed right at 800 with his famous 275 Rigby, another name for the 7x57mm Mauser. He used 173-grain RN military bullets at about 2,500 fps. What John "Pondoro" Taylor learned (by trying/testing a wide variety of rifles/cartridges/bullets) was that the larger, heavier bullets at xxxx velocity would deliver enough energy with a head shot that missed the brain. This his TKO formula. The reason I feel it doesn't apply to body shots on all species is that those don't deliver the energy/shock to the central nervous system. The easiest way to understand the ineffectiveness of energy to kill is the gut shot. Regardless what size bullet from whichever shoulder-fired rifle you use carrying whatever energy, said bullet applied to the paunch rarely drops or kills outright even a small deer. Bullet kinetic energy numbers do not translate well to effect. Technically 3,000 foot-pounds of energy is supposed to be enough energy to lift a 3,000-pound object a foot off the ground! Yet I and millions of others have put that much or more into various animals only to see them stand as if nothing has happened. Or dash off as if merely spooked. But hit an elk in the spinal column with a 40-gr. bullet carrying 100 f-p energy and it collapses on the spot. I might address this in a future episode of RSO Podcast. John Nosler shot a deer with a .225 Winchester. Look in the old Nosler manual. A curiosity in this day and time.
When you speak of the supply and demand I've found I can't order any firearm from any local firearms store, they all tell me they can only get what they are sent from their jobbers. If I lived somewhere other than Southern Colorado maybe it would be different. I'd like to know.

I love my Tikka T3 308 it’s a tack driver with 165/ 168 grain Nosler ammunition

I gotta agree...I've got several Tikka's in my safe chambered from 6.5 Creed to 308 Win to 300 Win Mag....every one of them is a tack driver and shoots sub MOA out of the box with premium ammo. With handloads, I can get a 3 shot group at 100 that you can cover with a dime using Nosler Accubonds.

Hi again Liam. I doubt the Marlin 336 was ever chambered in 30-06. Action can't handle that size cartridge. Are you thinking perhaps 30-30? Now the Winchester 1895 is chambered in 30-06, so that one I can recommend. But if you're interested in a rifle for close range (inside 200 yards) deer hunting, you'll find the 336 in 30-30 more than adequate. The 1895 in 30-06 will suffice there, too, plus give you additional reach and wider bullet selection for much longer ranges and larger game. Recoil will be significantly higher with the 30-06.

Most versatile cartridges for a range of applications do exist. But the singular cartridge concept is kind of a fantasy.

Have owned an shot the 225 winchester for many yrs. There were 3 models .which is winchester mod. 70 win. Mod. 670 an Savage model 340 winchester never released the 50gr. Or 60gr. Loads for the 225win.
Yeah I have a .225 Winchester in a Winchester 670. Paid $250 for it about 12-13 years ago at a pawn shop.

7mm Rem Mag can be loaded for bear, literally! You can also load it down for ground hogs, so......that's pretty versatile!
That's just mean shooting a little ole ground hog with a Magnum round that blows them off their feet into the sky.

I'm with Ron. I have several 308's, but I like my 7-08 better. There's pretty much no category where a 308 beats the 7-08.
For game like black bear 308 with a 180 partition might be better than any 7 08 but I like both of them.
The category where 308 mops the floor with 7-08 is bulk dirt cheap ammunition, are you practicing weekly or using a single box of 20 a year?
Personally I like to shoot not just hunt, bulk practice ammunition is a must. Granted I don’t run cheap 308, my 5.56 and 9mm make up the bulk of my shooting with 45acp, 357, and 44mag being runners up. 270 win is by far top mention for something in the same category as 308, I don’t shoot it nearly as much as I’d like to simply do to cost, the old girl is picky and really likes the Nosler BTs lol
I also like the 7mm-08 but there are certainly things the 308 does better. The larger diameter bullet makes the internal ballistics more efficient, so more muzzle energy. Bigger bullets also transfer energy more effectively. So for elk hunting inside 200 yards the 308 is significantly better. But if I'm going after elk I'm using a 300 or 338 magnum of some kind in case I need to make a longer shot. For deer-sized game using a smaller case it's really hard to beat the 7mm-08. Better external ballistics than the 308 while still having plenty of bullet weight and frontal area to make a clean kill.
The other reason a 12 gauge is more versatile than a 16 or 20 gauge is the wide variety and availability of factory loaded ammo for it.

Ballistic match for the 6.5 PRC. Close to performance of the old 270 Win. Same MV with same bullet weights, but the narrower .264 bullets will have higher B.C., thus a slight advantage beyond 400 yards or so. Advantage over PRC is narrower case so one more in magazine. But requires standard length action, if that matters to you. I see RPM as a narrow niche cartridge with small convenience advantages over the 270 and PRC. Should be a fine mule deer, sheep, goat, caribou, elk round in a rifle you like.

The most versatile cartridge in my estimation would the one that you can reliably hit whatever you are aiming at. Good shot placement is the key to success.
so the atmosphere does go with the rotation of the earth, at least when it comes to the altitudes and distances involved in rifle shooting. You have to make a different set of assumptions when working with ICBMs

Hi Ron, I've never heard you give your thoughts on 7.62x39. People often say the 7.62x39 is to a .308 what a .308 is to a 30-06. What do you think? There are several videos of people taking large game in Alaska with SKSs. What do you think of it for big game?

Andrew, I've no doubt the Russian 7.62 can cleanly kill anything so long as you put the right bullet in the right place from the right distance. As you know, every bullet reaches a point at which is is moving so slowly that it'll bounce off. Most of us couldn't deliver said bullet at those ranges anyway, so it's a silly point. More importantly we should consider the fairly light bullets loaded in this round, usually a .310" diameter 123-gr. spitzer at around 2,330 fps. B.C. is poor at roughly .320 . S.D. is low at .183. Load a 150-gr boat tail spitzer for better B.C. and S.D. and you'll reduce MV to perhaps 2,100 fps. No, these numbers do not suggest the SKS round is to the 308 as the 308 is to the 30-06. The 308 shoots the same bullets as the 30-06 within 100 fps. The Russian round spits a 150-gr. some 600 or 700 fps more slowly than the 308. I think the 7.61x39 is popular because rifles and ammo have been inexpensive. I have a bias against it because it's long been the military round of various communist govts. shooting at American soldiers, of thugs and bandits around the world, of poachers killing rhinos and elephants, etc. I know this is not the fault of the inanimate cartridge/rifle, but the association is to disturbing for me to embrace the SKD or 7.62x39. (P.S. Alaskans regularly take caribou, bears, and moose with .243 Win., 223 Rem., and 22 Long Rifle, too.)

Hei Ron, first off, thank you for answering a previous question. Now with a very hard second question: why is it that I cannot buy a 7mm 08 in Europe? It's not illegal in any way, it is just basically impossible to find a rifle chambered for it, and the ammo. Why? the 7x57 is still 'available', but nowhere as popular to justify why the 7mm 08 seems to have never arrived in Europe.

As far as the rifle debate on deer hunting states. Here in NY they did all studies and pretty much the whole state is rifle minus counties that have a huge city in them. From what i herd from those mid west states on why not rifle. Its cause the states DNR dont want long range shooting deer to really hurt the population. Iowa wants to maintain its big bucks and study show once rifles are used now you increase distance of shooting and accuracy.
That might be part of it, Mark, although harvest management is more simply controlled by limiting tag sales. However, allow more tag sales while limiting hunter success via "primitive weapons" restrictions could do the same thing while simultaneously bringing more $ into the department. "You can buy all the $100 deer tags you want, but you can hunt with slingshots only!"
I love my shotguns but I'm not buying the most versatile argument because to do all of those things reasonably well you either need multiple barels or chokes. If we consider a platform who's only mod allowed is the ammo that is used. I would go with 30-06. Can't shoot birds in flight but can shoot big game out to 600yds or more in a survival situation. Can shoot rabbits in the head at 20yds with that same round. Been there done that!
While I haven't seen one in a while, don't forget variable chokes for shotguns. That's not a modification it's an adjustment that didn't take tools.
For a cartridge that's most versatile with the direction of going lead-free by law in many areas, I'd go with either a .300 or 7mm PRC. I'd have to see all the reloading manuals to confirm.

The 30-06 is adequate for the great bears, and the .25 is not. Meanwhile a .30 FMJ does okay on furbearers, so....yeah, .30-06.
