Lord Of The Rings: War in the North. Fun coop hack and slash rpg-esque game that remains broken on PS3 with regularly corrupted saves. It's a shame because you can't buy it on steam anymore since the game makers lost the license. It's VERY difficult to find a slit screen coop game like it.

Hi Jules, as a game developer myself. The Wipeout-Xl bug is just incompetence of the developer. They forgot to implement a piece of code that normally makes sure that the speed in videogames is the same across the board. So regardless of your actual processing speed of your hardware any game should run at a fixed speed, because otherwise it causes problems like you mentioned with Wipeout. In unity for example when calculating the speed for something we use a multiplier of Time.deltaTime. This just makes sure that it won't use the actual capable speed of your computer but the speed that the developers want to use. Now with a console videogame this problem might not be noticeable because they should all run on the same hardware, but even then it is necessary because you never know if the chipset gets upgraded in future versions of a console.

    • @dancarter6268
      @dancarter6268 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I remember playing an old D&D game on PC that had this same problem. There was one area that had a timer, and you had to get through it before the timer ran out or you lost instantly. The timer was based on the clock speed of the processor it was programmed on, and so with a faster computer, the timer could burn through 20 minutes in less than a second.

I once played this game through for story, then created a new game thinling about going for 100%, put all the time and effort it to find because i completed the payphone missipns near the end of the first game against the purple nine gang that they would no longer spawn in that game but any other games on the save block.

There's a bug on Jak 2 that made impossible to beat the game; If you advanced in the race minigame eventually one of the races will spawn on the same spot of a main mission, and the game just can't handle two mission start point close to each other, so the main mission will disapear and the race minigame will take the place. I always like to make the sidequests before the main quests so when I discover that I will had to start the whole game just because I play some races I just give up and abandon the game. And I discover that bug ain't fixed even in the re-realed trilogy version.

ALBION - a science fiction / fantasy cross over RPG, made by Blue Byte. Most of it was either in 2D (manoevering across the landscape) or turn based (combat on a grid). Unfortunately, there were 3D passages, too. In one of them, you had to run along a wall and hit three switches which would open a door on the other side of the hall, then turn and run straight at the door and pass through in order to reach the next area.
The problem? It was timed. And guess which clock was used to check the time. Hint: It was not the clock that is used to tell which time it is. That leaves the CPU- and so it was unplayable with anything beyond a Pentium 120.

Very nice list, as always =) I do have to nitpick on one thing, though: Lion King wasn't a Capcom game, it was actually developed by Westwood Studios (yes, that Westwood) and published by Virgin! :P And I remember reading the SC3 savefile problems were even worse... either way, I'm not deleting that savefile ever -_-
Lastly, wasn't there a soccer game released for the ol' Saturn (I believe related to the 1996 Summer Olympics) that had such a gamebreaking bug that the EU version was pulled from shelves just a few weeks after release? I'm not being able to find anything about this, but maybe someone can confirm it :D Cheers!

For some reason, this reminds me of the demo version of Star Wars: Dark Forces. It was available from Lucas Arts as a 100+ MB download, back in the days of dial-up internet, where it would take roughly four minutes to download 1MB.
Now, Lucas Arts was an American company. I live in Australia. To get the file, you needed to dial into an American number, with costs associated for an international phone call, which were prohibitively expensive back then. 60MB, IIRC, at four minutes per megabyte, or 240 odd minutes = approximately a four hour international phone call. Now, I was quite prepared to do this, advised my parents that I would be doing this, and told them I would pay for the cost of the call (I had just started working full time, and still lived with them).
Three and a half hours into the download, my dad picked up the phone to make a call… Connection lost. File corrupted. No chance of simply resuming the download, and had to start from scratch… Tried again later that night, when everyone was asleep, and finally got the demo. But the phone bill! Yikes. For young me, though, totally worth it, to be able to play an early access version of something new for Star Wars (even though I could easily have purchased three or so copies of the retail version for the cost, when released…). I would not do this, these days, if circumstances were similar.
This was the incident that convinced me to have my own phone line installed at the house, for uninterrupted modem use.
    Cheers,

I don’t know, I don’t quite think it’s altogether fair to blame the Atari 2600 port of _Pac-Man_ for setting the [video game] world on fire (to paraphrase from the title of The Ink Spots song which appears as part of _Fallout 3_ ’s OST) in the worst possible of ways. That’s a stretch. I think of it more of an ill omen or foreshadowing, writing on the wall, whatever of what was to come, but whose warnings were ignored in the name of the pursuit of the almighty dollar, better known as it’s common colloquialism, corporate greed.

It's not copying anything that would corrupt it's deleteing anything behind the save file. I'll exsplain here lets say you played Resident Evil outbreak and saved then saved after a sanario then went to soul cailibur 3 now SC3 is in frount of RE outbreak and lets say after sometime a few years pass you decide to delete outbreak to make room for anouther game maybe something new you got well if you just delete it say goodbye to SC3 as well cause it is gonna corrupt it self how ever you if you first start RE outbreak and the save data gets loaded your SC3 data is now behind RE outbreak now you can delete RE outbreak safely and without worry. how ever if you no longer own the game there is a work around IF you own a secound PS2 memory card. you can copy SC2 to the secound card then UNPLUG IT FROM THE PS2 that step it important. Then delete what you want to get rid of on card 1 and then SC3 on card one will corrpt scap it then plug card 2 back in copy it to card 1 and you still have your sweet save data. Why does SC3's save data fuction like this i'm no exspert if you want that answer you gonna have to dig for that.

10:34 that's actually not that uncommon. Games run part of their code on screen refreshes, every time there's a new frame part of the code runs again. If you programmed a game for a console with a fixed or capped frame rate in mind and moved to a PC with a virtually unlimited one, certain calculations will be off. That's why, for example, you can't beat the 360 spin trick on GTA SA's auto school on 60fps, It will always think you oversteered

I have a suggestion for a list. Multiplayer Games That Are Still Going Despite Being Declared Dead. The playerbase has dropped, the esports league closed down, reviewers and internet commentors have smugly declared that this game is finished and you're stupid if you still play it. And yet, the game still has an active playerbase, you can get matches at any hour of the day and the devs are even still supporting it with patches and new content! In spite of the judgment of the gaming community who don't play it, this "dead" game is still going. Maybe not strong, but it refuses to die. Heroes of the Storm is one example.

What about Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness? It was basically a Cyberpunk 2077 released in 2003. It desperately needed to be patched.

Legend of Dragoon for the PS1 had a glitch that it would freeze at a very specific scene transition when played on a PS2. Wouldn't freeze when played on PS1 or PS3 but always on PS2.

@14:40 - fun fact; Coleco did a horrendously bad job on Pac Man for the Atari 2600 on purpose. They were hoping to boost sales of the Colecovision by pointing out how crap Atari games are.

Games that really needed a Save Option of some kind. A couple of examples: "Jurassic Park" on the SNES, and "Blaster Master" on the NES.

    Fun fact:
The Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man was actually made by Atari's rival company and was made terrible on purpose to get people to buy the version for their own system.

Zelda games are all very stable and meticulously created at launch? Did you play BotW at launch??? I mean.... At all? I had to put it down for a year due to the bugginess (and boredom). I guess people overlook that due to all the marketing money they flooded the money with to hype it up... Or maybe I played an ultra rare US beta release that was purchased at best buy lol. I'm a huge Zelda fan, but let's take the green glasses off lol

Another game who has needed a patch is the Pal Version from Digimon World, where a Bug prevented you from speaking with an Digimon, with makes completing the Game really difficult.

Suggestion: Best nature in videogames. I don't mean just graphics wise (older games can be included). More along the lines of atmosphere, music, artistic style etc. We all have spent our fair share of time in cool virtual forests.

Playing GTA San Andreas on the PS2 slimline was horrible. It almost always froze, especially when traveling through the desert or Las Venturas.

Suikoden 5 for ps2 needed a patch. There's a game breaking glitch in it which crashes the game half way through.
There's a spot where you walk across a bridge and when the game is supposed to load the new area it crashes.
Fortunately it doesn't happen all the time, but too often.
I had to clean the disc and stuff for it to get fixed. Yeah I know that sounds like a disc problem, but it was really a game glitch.

Add Gran Turismo 2 to the list. My game at a certain point, all of my cars just vanishes, except for the car I'm driving in. I start over, and again, it happens! This makes the rest of the game unplayable.

I'd love to have seen a patch for Super Mario World 2 that stops the awful crying baby Mario sound
and a patch to fix Max Payne's horrible dream sequences.

I think it would also be fair to include actual gems like Master of Magic and Darklands. They are truly awesome games and have actualy come into their own later after patches were actually made possible. But on launch... Oh boy.

I believe it was the OG Baldurs Gate on PC. If you ran a Half-Elf multi class. At one point in the dungeon it shot a fireball at you. And when it happened the game would crash. It took forever to find out what was going on.

Early PC games running too fast because processors improved happened often, in the early days. My own dad had a game that was all seafaring warfare and when he tried to play it on an upgraded machine it ran so quickly that he'd no sooner launch it than find out he'd lost. I'm not kidding about that, either. It would scale the speed of the game to the processor's available processing.

Idea :10 Easter eggs that reference cancelled games possibly?
Can’t find any other videos on it. There’s plenty of examples. Like the Pirate that was set to be the main villain in project dream makes a small cameo in Banjo Kazooie 2

I would argue for Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. Technically, it wasn’t pre internet, but it was slightly too early for post release patches for console games to be a thing, which is a shame because there are a few moments where the game Pandemic Studios was trying to make shines through the bugs and it is glorious, but then another small bug disrupts it.

I actually don't remember getting completely broken games back then. I mean bugs all games have yea, but got occasional bad game but was just bad design not the broken half done stuff we get today... I probly did get one somewhere along the way just don't remember

Why did the PS2 slim suck so hard?! Why did they make so many of them if it did all this garbage? I remember Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters would get scratched beyond use in a slim model! Thank god I got an original model.

I'm gonna say Prince of Persia (DOS). I mean, it's a near perfect game, but the time limit is going to prevent a lot of people from seeing a lot of it and The Shadow of Flame...and as long as we're talking ports....not a single good one after the first
