The roads of Taxco remind me of small towns in central Italy, and the scenery there is similar, so beautiful!

Great update, as usual! Nice hat, Naick! One thought about sketchy overnight parking. Since the local police were so nice and concerned about your safety, maybe next time, find a police station, check in with them, and try to find an overnight parking spot nearby? Separately, I thought you said your Spanish is pretty rusty? You two seem pretty fluent to me!

I love (and envy) how you guys are fluent in English and Spanish. Covering your entire journey that way must reduce the stress level by far. Did you study Spanish in Belgium beforehand or...?
I have a huge interest in Central America so I'll be traveling along with you virtually.
Naick had a few years of Spanish at university and we've traveled a lot in Latin America, so we picked up a lot too.
You should definitely try to learn some Spanish when traveling in Latin America, it's so much more fun that way, especially when you can talk and hang out with locals.

Best to go and check for yourself and not believe the media too much. Most people that visit Mexico actually survive :D

I suspect a large, foreign van can make you a target in certain areas. Tourists often have money and a van signals that all your stuff is inside. Be careful, be aware, but still have fun! We can't let fear keep us from living.
Couldn't agree more, Angela! :) we're extra careful because of the van, but we're not going to let fear stop us! So far everything has been great :)

omg...those streets of Taxco were crazy man. I can imagine how nicely built are the legs of those who live there and must have great lungs. It's a nice street but sheesh too narrow and whindy.

No wonder you ended up parking in Polanco after your Metepec scare, but it’s okay, it was just a regular check-up, which is sadly routine for local police even if the state (State of Mexico) isn’t Sinaloa.

We're doing fine here, although Monday morning the cops asked us to move when we were parked up in front of an embassy all night haha.

Smaller town less tourist, the poor and ill mannered will target tourist, which is why larger cities has more crime, more tourist.

It's always scary to get any type of knock on your vehicle from cops at any time!! lol especially at night. I loved the view at the hotel tho, that makes up for that scary night

Glad everything is OK. I really felt for you guys . My brother and his wife were kidnapped in monterrey Mexico. It was horrific, thankfully they were OK when they discovered they had no money & pretty much useless. Big up to the Irish embassy who got to them so fast . YES most people are kind , absolutely. They were both just very unlucky . And yes I travel to Mexico still...I love the country .
I admire you for this - not necessarily for still going to Mexico, but for realizing how something like that is just sheer bad luck and not letting fear rule your life. Still, sorry to hear what happened to them. Must have been scary 😟
@Naick & Kim they were very scared but help was fast and plenty. It was only a few hours , yet certainly felt like forever . Absolutely, we can't let these things stop us ever . It's bad luck , not a bad place . It's the world we live in and the vast majority of this planet is filled with good humans :) P S . Love your channel !

Just continue to be super careful. I've been to Mexico twice. Once to a resort and once to "real" Mexico helping build an orphanage. Both times someone was killed at the resort and at the orphanage. Don't want to scare you, but be ultra-wise.

Since you were in a town that gets very few international. visitors, the police more than likely didn't want you to be targeted By even the pettiest of criminals. It's nice to see that the officers were doing their due diligence and preemptive even if a little overprotective. Have you checked on the types of crime that have occurred since you left? Have there been any major incidences? Maybe the police wanted to scare you out of town so that you didn't attract any criminal elements with Vinny. Keep on trucking!
I think they were concerned because of the big shiny van. They probably don't see a lot of those in more remote mountain places :D we didn't check back to see if anything happened - even if there had been a break-in, it probably wouldn't make the news or anything. We're happy it all worked out :)

The terrifying part was how concerned the police were! I went to Taxco when I was 13 (1972) and it was so charming and beautiful, and it looks unchanged. I so want to go there again!
That is exactly what terrified us too! We were totally fine before but they were really worried. Probably because of how much we stand out. And yes Taxco is beautiful. Most beautiful colonial town in Mexico if you ask me. So unique

General rule of thumb if a place during the day has lots of parked cars but they clear out at night, maybe best to not stay there.

I (Naick) used to watch the simpsons religiously as a kid.
I just started watching (10 seconds in); I visited Taxco in 1981(? - yes, I'm that old), with my parents. We took a bus to the top, saw wild pigs, my mom was convinced she was having a brain aneurysm, and I had the worst sunburn of my life. Before I go further, I'm thinking I had a much better experience than you!

Good cops and good doctors are always slightly overly concerned about your safety and health, respectively. It's also not an everyday occurrence in Mexico to see European license plates.
Very true! I'm sure they were just looking our for us. When the one cop said "are you driving to Argentina in THIS?" he definitely was not very confident it could be done, haha :D
I know this is a rather old video but as I watch I hear some of the things you were saying after people mentioned it could be dangerous. Everyone feels like it can't happen to them, but it does happen to someone. Just keep that in mind, It's not said to scare or keep you from doing what you want. Only to guide your decision and help to determine if its worth the risk or not.

It is better to parking in a hotel's parking lot in future. Usually they will allow you stay. DON'T park on street any more. In fact, Mexico has still much better safety than other countries in Central America.
Yeah we did the sensible thing and now we're in Mexico City... parked on the street :D
But we're in a really safe spot now with loads of police.

So many cartels and danger in Mexico. Don’t ever ever ever stop or sleep in a van or any car while in Mexico unless your in like Baja California/Mexico where it’s Military controlled. Your asking for trouble . There’s alerts for Mexico. People being kidnapped

He is the “Doctor Doolittle” of TH-cam. 😎 Glad the police officers were doing their job in a very respectful manner. The motto of many police forces is “To Serve and Protect”. Next time you have a dangerous situation like this, drive as close to the police station as you can get, to stay overnight.
Last year my son and I backpacked for 8 months through Central and South America and went through some rough areas. We never had any problems though. The only challenge you might have is the fact that you travel in a very fancy looking van and people in very poor areas might think you are rich. Suggestion: don't make your van look so pretty:). Bumps and scratches should be welcomed. In poorer areas park your van in secure areas. But don't let fear keep you from your beautiful adventure. 😉
Ingrid, we don't take our van to the carwash as much anymore so it looks a little dirtier for that precise reason, haha :D completely agree with what you're saying though. We've been to rougher areas before too, just backpacking, but it is a little different now because the van makes us stand out and we sleep on the streets most of the time, haha. Inside the van, but still... on the streets 😁 when we're in an area we know is less safe we're going to try to find a parkup at a hotel or police station or gated parking or something, just to be sure :)

Most of the time we just boondock. Although in cities we sometimes stay in parking lots as well.
Just because it’s on iOverlander doesn’t mean it’s safe. Always do your research before staying. As a Canadian, I know that Mexico can be dangerous. Always have a plan to get out quickly. You’ve got this. Go by your gut.

I'm an American and I loved your video. Mexico is a beautiful country but it's very dangerous in a lot places. Mexico is known about the Cartel. They are very dangerous. Us America have a big problem sending their drugs into our country, over the border. Be careful going into another country. Keep smiling 😊
Yeah you need to be a bit careful where you go. Most places are pretty safe though. We've spent probably more than 12 months in Mexico in total over the last 5 years and haven't really had any issues.

Fear is contagious. If the cops hadn't instilled their fear into you, you would have been fearless and felt fine throughout the night. Spreading fear is dangerous, if you ask me.

Yes, that is true. If they hadn't said anything, we never would have known. But I think they saw our big shiny van with foreign plates and wanted to help us be aware. They were very nice :)

I'm in India and every time they pull me over on the motorbike, Kawasaki KLR 650, I take off my helmet with a big grin on my face. Not once have they asked me for the usual bribe

@@NaickKim Getting the bike out of customs, in Chennai, was very stressful. 2 weeks of arguing with different "officials". Now I have the bike, though, I am having the most amazing time. Isn't it so much different travelling with the freedom of your own vehicle

Just crossing Mexico/USA off my driving bucket list - these places are just not safe for naive Europeans like my wife and I it seems.
I think there are risks everywhere in the world. This is the first time in an entire year of travelling in North America that we were scared. And in the end nothing happened - but it was very scary because of how serious the police were. We would still wholeheartedly recommend coming to Canada/Mexico/the US :)
