It was strange in a way watching this backstory as I’ve been following you on Instagram and knew some of the outcome. That said I could share in your excitement in the solo travel adventure that you told us about at the open. On my trip to Europe in 2021 I went solo for the first time for a few days before I met up with my sisters and I LOVED it for all of the reasons you described and more. You handled your situation beautifully and met some wonderful new friends along the way. You know that that’s exactly what I’m praying for you, that no matter the hurdles you guys face, the kindness of strangers like your “cemita” guys and the local police will help you along on your journey. Thank you for sharing the goodness of humanity.

@@NaickKim Oh, you win hands down for the challenging occurrences category. My biggest challenge was getting off the train one stop too early right after I arrived--jet lagged of course--and had yet to get a SIM card so that I could tell where I was 🤪. (And you can pretty much guess that I was in my favorite country of Switzerland.) While I was familiar with travelling there, it was the first time I'd travelled without my hubby of 45 years, but being alone for a few days was exhilarating and gave me the assurance to say to the 5 ladies in my study group, "yeah, I'll take you over there; we'll have a blast." And we did last year. This year my hubby is going back with me. He's tired of me having all the fun 🤗

Awwww I love this. We had to have our van fixed in a little backstreet garage in Puerto Vallarta. The guys we met were great and so we got a referral to have Tia Maria (our '96 Roadtrek camper van)painted and beautified. They did top notch work and we had a great experience just "talking" to them though we don't really speak Spanish and they don't really speak English. You did everything just as I would have (probably better):)

This one really hit me personally. First of all, I went from MX City through Puebla and Oaxaca all the way down to Puerto Escondido where I stayed for a month in April/ May. I also know the kindness of strangers, not just in Mexico, but as you know, all around the world. Somedays it also brings me to tears after some amazingingly kind thing some complete stranger did for me. This is why I say the world is awesome and the news does not reflect 99% of reality. Most people around the world are GREAT!

Kim, you handled the situation like a rock star! I can relate to your troubles. I took my first solo road trip in my thirties. I was traveling from Central Kentucky to Hampton, Virginia on the Atlantic coast for a science teacher workshop. I burnt out my brakes coming down the mountains that lie between our states. I had planned to stay in Richmond, VA that night, but had to stop short, at Lexington, VA, where I found a hotel. I made arrangements to take my car to the dealership there the next morning. So the next day, on the way to the dealership, I missed my exit TWICE!!! (This was before GPS was a thing.) Driving up and down the highway with minimal brakes was super stressful, but I eventually made it, got my brakes fixed, and continued my journey without further incident. Being able to handle that sort of situation on my own, as stressful as it was, boosted my self-confidence tremendously.
That's how we grow, isn't it! Sounds very stressful with the brake problem. Especially on a highway 😱 but I'm glad you gained confidence because of it, it is exactly the same for me!! 🥰

We all need the kindness of strangers. It’s nice to see the generosity and kindness of Mexicans being highlighted in Mexico. So proud of you Kim and Naick is so supportive! What a good team! 🌈 I think everyone can relate to this especially women especially after being in a relationship for a long time and not having to do certain things alone of at all. We have to remember that we are brave, resourceful and that there are always people willing to help when we really need it! I feel that I would be like you, trust your gut, believe in the hearts of people, and not always fear because of the negative Nancy's out there.
You should be proud of approaching this head-on on your own.
One suggestion is when you get closer to Colombia to order parts ahead for breaks, calipers, and disks for your breaks because you are now entering the mountains of South America, maybe even line it up ahead of time for Panama so you have it ready in advance. Also, think ahead about your power steering, (fluids, etc.)
Naick goes away for a few days and Kim destroys Vinnie. 🤦♂At least Naick had a great time with me and at the strip club crawl we did ... 😜 hehe Obviously kidding, but all kidding aside. Kim, that was a VERY brave thing to do. I am a dude & have never & would never go to Mexico by myself as I do not know how to speak Spanish & am not brave enough. lol Damn my Mexican American friends for not teaching me!! What doesn't kill you makes you stronger... assuming you still have your limbs. Thanks for showing us Mexico & all Mexican people aren't criminals, they're just like us. But don't make it a habit to go off with a bunch of men! 👍😆

@@NaickKim I went to Kaohsiung/Fegnshian. Then for a few days I rode the high speed rail up to Taipei to visit my aunt and uncle and a few of my cousins that live there. Then I went down to Hsinchu/Toefin to visit another cousin and they took me to Beipu.
Not as adventurous as you guys since this was primarily a family trip and not a fun family trip...you know what I mean.
I'm glad to see you all are still making it and moving forward with your van life trip with Vinny. Pretty ballsy of you to go at it alone and luckily everything turned out ok.

@@NaickKim surprisingly I ate a lot at home lol. It wasn't until the later half of my trip did I get the chance to venture out to the street foods. From there, I couldn't tell you what I ate as most of the names of the items my cousin had to tell me haha!! But I did eat quite a bit of oysters, squid, taro, taro, and more taro. 😁😁😁
We did have a chance to eat some beef noodle soup though the circumstances behind that meal were bittersweet. It was still a good meal though I think had the circumstances been different the meal would have been 10x better.
I did also eat quite a few different things at the night markets. Again, lots of things I do not know the names of, haha! 🤣🤣🤣

The people are one of the many reasons why we just love Mexico so much ♥️ like you say, you're never alone here in case something happens. Whereas in Belgium, people are also kind, but not as open as here and they would not go to these lengths to help someone!

You definitely need to hone in your awareness to your first instincts because everybody has them but not everybody can recognize them.....we call them street smarts here........those guys were definitely nice guys.....just the way they behaved around you from the start they didn't show ANY sign of foul play so you were in good hands.......glad it all worked out for you!
