My NEW Orchestral Template 5.0 / In depth breakdown of Sample Libraries, Plugins, Reverbs, etc.

- In this video I breakdown my new orchestral template 5.0. I play through some of my favourite patches talk about why I picked some sample libraries and plugins over others and how they're all mixed together.
Note: In the video I say that CSSS and CSS have different delay times. It’s been pointed out to me that this is only because I used the classic legato patch alongside the regular legato on CSS. You should never mix up the standard mode with the classic mode like I’m doing here if you want consitent delay time with the 2 libraries.

I think you'll find Pacifica strings the library 'wife' with which the honeymoon never ends. This is one of those libraries that make me smile every time I use it. That sound and the ease in using it will never grow old. You're so freaking talented, Mattia. Thanks for this annual template update video which goes way beyond!
You deserve way more subs. Your sound is fantastic and videos inspiring to watch - from a 30 year+ producer/engineer and orchestral programming newbie who's recently licensed my first piece. I've recently discovered and DL'd the Performance Samples libraries and I'm very excited upon hearing the sound and dynamics.
Thanks and congrats on licensing your first piece. I hope it’ll be the first of many 😁
This video is my new holiday tradition! Wishing you all the best, glad to be a patreon supporter! 🙂
This is awesome! Thanks for all the good info. And of course, your composition and orchestration skills have a big impact in the overall sound of the mockups. Love it! Thanks
great to hear from you again! and thank you very much for the in-depth tutorial!
I would love to hear you talk about your process of choosing the 'right' orchestration for a part, why you choose some instruments over others and maybe even some technical stuff like when to use Oboe 1 vs oboe 2 and such...
thank you again for these videos!
Amazing piece!!! Excellent work man. Very encouraging for all of us composers!
Great video, learned a lot. And your piece sounds fantastic. Thank you Mattia.
I enjoy your reaction to performance samples at 1:06:19. I love that feeling when you get it just right.
Inspiring as usual. Thanks for sharing!
You are a monster .. so good, your music is some of the most authentic, I've heard coming out of any libraries..
wow bro you really are a great composer and also awesome for sharing man. Thanks. I was really impressed with you talents. Much love from Los Angeles brother
Great showcase of the template! The way to get around having individual reverbs when printing stems is to create reverb auxes for each group. For example, if you want to have full control of strings stem with their individual reverb, use an aux and route its output to strings stem - good idea to test it is add an excessive amount of reverb via send and then bring strings stem fader all the way down to see if strings reverb is actually applied within the stem.
I would do the same for short and longs, for each orchestral family so basically woodwinds, brass and strings would have 2 reverbs each (short and long) routed into their main stem groups.
Since you are using mastering processing for the whole track, each exported stem will behave differently because of compression/limiting. For example, exporting strings stems only when you are hitting mastering compressor with brass, woodwinds and percussion will have a different sounding stem as opposed when strings are in solo hitting mastering compression. The way around this is to use mastering processing for each stem and leave MIX OP for monitoring/metering purposes only.
That's a lot more processing if your computer can handle it but it offers a lot more flexibility when delivering!
Id love to see a deeper dive on the effects, eq and routing. Setting my template up and wanting to get the sound as balanced and placed as possible within the template.
Be good to see the effects/eq plugins chain flow from individual instruments all the way to the out bus.
You mention your three reverbs too. Be good to see how you are individually using them and if your using them together. Best wishes.
Amazing, as always, thank you very much!
The pleasure is always mine 😁
Thank you for doing these!
You’re welcome!
Thanks for the inspiration and guidance.
Thanks, glad it was helpful
Mattia, your compositions and the harmonic language you use in them really stand out! You’re my favourite orchestration channel.
Thanks man!
Fantastic vid thanks - some cool instruments old and new. BTW what breath controller are you using?
My Lord your mix sounds good
That's what I wanted to leave a comment on! You can really could FEEL the demo
Performance Samples is great! I primarily used CSS for my string section, but have transitioned to Pacific Strings for most of my music. Pacific Strings Solo is going to be great! 😃
Yeah both pacific strings and vista are incredible libraries
@@MattiaChiappa I can't wait for Vista II. The portamento in Vista and Pacific sounds great, but a lot of times I wish there was an option for a standard legato. And Vista II will provide just that!
Your demo sounds great 👍 I am missing BBCSO in your template, which I like very much. I am using BBSSO Core together with Abbey Road One now, and I think they blend very well together. It's always inspiring to watch your videos!
Yeah, I do still take it for a ride from time to time but the whole workflow doesn’t really work for me anymore. I still like the sound though
Love your own version of Harry Potter sound also hear some Star Gate vibes. Good work 👍🎵🎵🎵
You can play sample modeling horns polyphonically if you use a Kontakt multiscript called JM Multidivisi. You load up your three horns and the multiscript and you're good to go.
Thanks a lot for sharing !
You’re welcome!
Exellent walk trough with great tips, thank you! Will have to check out Angry Brass by Performance Samples, and Strezov Choir Essentials. Oh, and CSS just sounds drop gorgeous every time again :) Agree about the Spitfire player, a school example of bad GUI design and missed opportunities IMO.
your demo 🔥🔥🔥
Great! This is tonight's viewing sorted 👍
I am pleased you finally are using Pacific Strings: they are so good!
Will you also consider into using the SWAM virtual instruments in the near future?
It’s not in the plans but who knows, maybe 😁
GREAAAT VIDEO!!
This is a killer template! And a killer piece!
Thanks again for your inputs the other day brother! Appreciate it
Wow! That's amazingly beautiful, this reminds me of Laurence of Arabia, which haven't seen in more than 20 yrs.
Great run through! I was wondering if you have any tips for keeping the track height (zoom) consitent for the template organization?
Hey Mattia. Great video. Some really nice sounding libraries here. I did notice something that i feel you could maybe improve on in the future. Your EQ in particular. i want to say forst that youve got a really great sound, but i think your EQ choices probably hold back your individual layers, as some did sound better without EQ. your mid range is great, it sounds like you really know what you re doing, its more the high and low end in particular which you are probably causing a few issues mix wise. illl give examples. at 11:50 you are adding around 5/10db at 60 hz to french horns and then cutting the low mids. Cutting the low mids is probably a good shout in a dense mix, but french horns don't really go as low as 60 hz consistently and 60 hz is typically where the fundamental for low percussion instruments sit. so adding that amount ow low and sub energy at that particular frequency range is going to make the french horns low end mask the sub energy from things like kick drums, bass drums, Timps etc. You may find that taking out the sub information with a high pass to around 80 hz, boosting around 120hz and cutting around 400 hz will give you a better result and also help the horns stay out of the way of the percussion and other low instruments as they are more of a mid to low mid range instrument anyways. :) with regards to the high end, you say you have issues with getting hiss from boosting the top end. i would suggest maybe not using a shelf on the high end with strings (I think it was strings you said you were having issues with right? :) ). instead you can cut around 2.5/3.2khz by around 2/5db which will get rid of some of the harsher harmonics and boost c4k (ish) with a fairly narrow cue. That will help them cut through without accentuating the hiss at all. :) If you boost anything above those frequencies you will just amplify the bow noise which is where you are getting the hiss from. These are a few things that i've picked up from mixing countless tracks over the years. i hope they help you, really enjoy your template walkthroughs! i should really focus on making more stuff like this myself, though im usually pretty busy working myself aha. Thanks for being an inspiration within the industry.
Fabulous work! What breath controller are you using? TEControl?
This was great
Great content as always, lots of good tips like the use of Softube saturation knob, I'm going to try it right away! Quick question: have you ever experienced some weird "double attack" when playing at a high dynamic using Vista? I'm constantly hearing this kind of delay between the attack and the actual body of the strings and it's a little bothering trying to tame it
Thanks! I can’t say that I’ve experienced the issue you describe. I’d reach out to the support, I’m sure they’ll be able to help you
That's an awesome piece.
Thanks!
That demo 😮
Great stuff! … I’ve probably misunderstood something about your effects issue (1:17:10) but have you tried adding empty midi regions to your reverbs (for the length of the piece) on the Arrange page for bouncing? Best wishes
I have found a way to get a better sound with SM trumpets (and other brass) cutting some (2) of the high resonances.
I have also noticed that applying the same trick to the other instruments (strings and wind) I get a better general definition and clarity.
Thanks for sharing your experience
I remember hearing about Auto Bounce for logic X that Tom Salta created. Might be able to preserve the processed sound for stem bouncing. I'm not 100% if it can do that, i just remember reading about it in computer music magazine. Nice sounding template btw I learn't a lot, thanks!
I’ll have to look into that, it’s the first time I hear about it
Thank you for this video, and for your conclusion that I find to be very true...
I’m glad to hear somebody made it to the end of the video ahaha
Bravo!! 👏
Fabulous. Stellar music, clean template (PS as a huge plus:)) and a radiant personality. Insta Sub and patreon:) Keep rocking the world, Mattia. Gracie mille per il tuo contento:)
Thanks man 😁
Hey! Thank you for this video. It was very helpful. Can I a QUESTION? How did you create stack folder inside folder?
Thank You Very Much!... for your excellent videos over the years! I plan on reviewing many of them again and would like to link up with you on one of your course offerings. A couple of questions. Can you reply with a recommendation for your headphone choice and why, and also if you have ever considered Audiobro's LASS, MSS, LASS 3 for strings or Orchestral Tools string libraries. Thanks!
The headphones I use now are Beyerdynamic 1990. For me to consider using a different string library would have to be either doing something fundamentally different or sound objectively better than what I have now. I like the sound of this template and the overall workflow, and I don’t plan on making any drastic changes
Awesome!
Thanks for this detailed walkthrough, the template sounds incredible! What mac are you running at this point? I'm curious as I'd love to build a similar template!
Thanks! I talk about it near the end of the video. It’s a MacBook M1 Max
Awesome - thank you! @@MattiaChiappa
My two favorite days of the year are Christmas and the day you release your Template video! I noticed you seem to treat shorts and longs with the same EQ and reverb. Is that for ease of writing? Do you work with articulation sets or keyswitches?
My part writing often involves constant articulation switching and it would be very impractical to go back to one articulation per track. The reverb I use here has such a minimal effect on the overall sound that I see very little in using a different one for shorts
Hi! Mind telling me what that mouth piece you're using? Is that an expression pedal kinda breathing device? That's freaking cool. Where do you get one?
This is amazing! Can you tell me what breath controller you're using?
tu es un genie bravo
I’m no genius but thanks, glad you’ve enjoyed it 😁
-60ms Track Delay on CSS, Works like a charm. Read somewhere they have a delay of 60ms.
But you can try and land onto something close to -60ms
Another amazing video, super clean template with beautiful music that demonstrates how well designed it is. I would like to know how to use the MIDI Breath Controller (perfect for leaving both hands free) in libraries that need to use more than one cc, as in the case of Spitfire strings (dynamics, vibrato, etc.)? Do you still use midi sliders too? Sorry for asking and thank you so much!! ❤
Yeah I still use faders for strings. I never use the breath controller simultaneously with faders though, I find the breath controller alone hard enough. I’m new to it and I’m still learning, it’ll be long before it becomes second nature
Many Thanks!@@MattiaChiappa
Thank you!
What’s the most cinematic harp in your opinion? What would you recommend and which one is your favourite?
They all sound rather similar. I’m liking cineharps right now
It seems like you've crafted a template that skillfully highlights the advantages of each instrument👍 In this section 1:05:42, you used PS instruments for the violin legato. Do you not use CSS for legato? // Also, I'm eager to experiment with creating sounds by mimicking a collection of captures where EQ and exciter are applied to each instrument. If there's a similar compilation available for each instrument, I'd like to try recreating the sounds to some extent.
Yeah all the strings legato parts were performance samples. I don’t know what you mean by exciter and eq, can you rephrase?
@@MattiaChiappa Thank you for your response.
1. Is there a specific reason for not using legato with CSS?
2. The content of my follow-up question was about tips on mixing for each instrument, and it seems like some of it is already covered in the video.
@YeahBan I just wanted to show something different here. You all already know I like css since I’ve been using for a long time now. PS has different qualities
Hi Mattia, which breath controller do you use?
Amazing piece and amazing sound! Bravo. Can you tell me the model of phones please? Is it wireless? Thanks
Thanks! These the Beyerdynamic 1990
Hey Mattia. Nice video! But I have a question. In 19:12, you mentioned the amazing trick that allows the piano to disable the solo function, and I'd like to know how it was set up so I can use it in other projects. Thanks!
Either control or command click on the solo button
Thank you:)
Lovely video man! How do you find Logic versus other DAWs? So many industry people use Cubase. Does it affect collaboration or anything like that?
Thanks! The vast majority of the people I’ve been collaborating with are logic users.
@@MattiaChiappa ah very cool. Your mock-ups are super realistic by the way! Great sense of cohesion in the mix 🙂
@PeterToml1nson thanks man!
This man is 😮
Is there print stems section inside the template ?
Mattia, do you have a list of VSTs in pdf format so I can setup in Cubase? Thanks. I enjoy your channel; Happy Holidays!
I don’t but I just use the stuff you see me using in this video. Cinematic studio series, cinperc, cineharps, cinestrings runs, Hollywoodwinds, Albion 1 legacy, angry brass pro and soloists, caspian brass, sample modeling brass, pacific strings, vista, strezof choir essentials, Oceania 2, Bernard herrmann composer toolkit. Jezz looks like a lot when it’s listed like this 😅 realistically though I could do make do with just cinematic studio series like I had for a long time. If you watch the video you can see in detail what use, particularly all of the minor add ons.
What is your breath controller?
Mattia, great videos as always. Im considering Cinematic Studio Strings, Brass and Woods. However i have BBC, Musio, Hollywood orchestra and can not hear a difference with samples of Cinematic Studios as opposed to cinestrings and Hollywood. Or should I scrap that idea snd invest in Pacific? Or do nothing as I gave all i need. I am a hobbyist.
Cinesamples are your best option if you are going for a John Williams / large Hollywood type sound.
CSS/CSB are great when they are soloed, but in a full mix they can take too much space while still sounding narrow, and make the mix messy. That's because of the way they were recorded, kind of a weird microphone setup. Microphones are too close in general, and nice sounding hall doesn't help (but it's not as bad as it may seem from my description). Great consistency though, great legatos and decent amount of articulations.
PS libs are closer to Cinesamples, but more wet. Great playability, modern approach.
I use and layer all of them.
Hey Mattia, what’s your opinion about Abbey Road one? Would you think it’s worth for adding in a collection together with CSS, CSSS, Albion One and Fluid Shorts? :)
I really like some of the percussion. If I had it would probably replace a couple of CinePerc instances.
I liked that little "Clangers" quote in the solo French Horn... yes?
Really? I don’t even know “Clangers” 😅
Thanks for this great video. I have a MacBook with the same specs but whenever I work with such a template I get a "system overload" warning (I use a high buffer size and purge the sounds in the kontact. Also all the sounds are on external ssd). Do you also get this warning sometimes?
(I usually use "freeze" or "bounce in place" as a solution, but I would like to work with your method).
I don’t get system overload because the tracks are loaded gradually while working on a project. The empty track at start has all of the tracks disarmed and no impact on memory. The demo for this template must have had only 150 tracks armed at max
@@MattiaChiappa thank you so much.
How are you changing articulations? Especially with the breath controller
It’s no different. I still use articulation maps triggered with iPad. The breath controller only affects cc1 (modulation)
Great video and template, the old HW - still so useful, I do not get why there is not more similar libraries, much larger and more complex.
Agree 100%
Thank you Mattia for all your videos very helpfull 🤩. I've one problem with templates using Kontakt. I've recently upgraded Kontakt 6 to Kontakt 7. You can use both in your DAW but there is not a possibility to change automaticaly. So I have to do it manually for each track (and when you have more than 300 tracks 😪...). Do you have a solution for that or what do you do in this case? Thanks for your answer. Laurent
I wish there was a way. It’s a completely separate plug-in so I don’t think you can
In any case, I haven't found any other solution than having to leave the old versions of Kontakt installed. Worse, when I install a new computer, I also have to install these old versions there to maintain compatibility with my old projects. And you, when you update Kontakt, you also have to redo your entire template? Or how do you do it?
Hi Mattia, Awesome work, I use Logic too and I would benefit a lot from looking at your work. If I pay the $9 on Patreon I can have access to this template? Thank you Matt!
Yeah it’s available for download on my Patreon alongside many more things
Thanks for sharing! You don't seem to use SM trombones, any reason for that?
I use to use them but i they’re better for jazz. I don’t really like them for this template anymore
Are the track icons you use stock Logic?
Yeah
Im thinking about changing to logic but i dont know if i can use it with windows or if it is recommendable to do so
I don’t Logic is available for Window
Is Gullfoss a must have for mixing? Any alternatives?
It’s a nice tool but I don’t think it’s a must have
Does it bother you that Pacific does not have multi-articulation, keyswitched patches?
I want to gradually start bringing Kontakt 7 into the template, at the moment I only use it for Pacific strings. I doesn't bother me that it doesn't have multi/articulations but if it did I would probably be more inclined to use more patches other than legato.
Hello, may I ask is it hard to use that breath midi controller? (I am pianist)
Btw, great content!
do you know which one he uses?
It’s not that bad but I think people make it easier than it actually is. I’ve only started to use it this year and I don’t feel like I’m very good at it. It’s something you have to practice
This breath controller is from TEControl
thankyou mattia
@@MattiaChiappa ..but you still decided to use it... Its good to have control in both hands i guess
How much RAM u need?
Everything
I’m new to libraries and I Simple got Opus Edition because of sale. But I saw where you are using MacBook Pro M1 Max. I’m kind of confused with MacBook and getting Mac Studio. Why do you have the MacBook?
Well for starter the MacBook is a laptop and the Studio isn’t. They’ve got completely different specs depending on how you build it. It depends on what you need.
Any suggestion for Disco strings? Fast, dynamic and smooth?
I really don’t know, maybe somebody else can leave a suggestion
Native Instruments Session Strings 2/Pro 2 are great for disco strings.
I have EW Opus but it not for Disco, its totally different level.
привет Маттиа.ты в этом видео упомянул про трубу -которая вибрирует.. .так вот...-я купил Албион ONE и у меня вибрируют скрипки -не устойчевй звук...-плавает .как избавится?спасибо.привет из Одессы.Украина.
what's the device you're blowing into?
it-s a TEC breath controller
is the template compatible with Cubase as well ?
No, I only use logic. I haven’t made templates for any other software
I really love the CSS legato. It's the best damn legato I've ever heard. But then I got Pacific Ensemble Strings and Vista... To be honest, the legatos are not as good as CSS but where Vista and Pacific shine is the liveliness. They sound like real strings... No other library can do this. That's the advantage of Performance Sampling... CSS on its own sounds lovely and you may be extremely happy with it... And when you play Vista or Pacific side by side you'll realize how static the sustain notes in CSS are. The same feeling I got when I heard the Abbey Road Violins and Cellos.. The legato is top notch but the samples sound dead... Especially in contrast to Pacific and Vista.
This might be very controversial haha, but JXL Brass is amazing for the big low brass sections (fff)!!
Oh yeah absolutely! It does sound amazing
I see that you almost completely abandoned BBC for the strings sound, did you just prefer the workflow of CSS better?
Yeah it took me a bit of trial and error but I finally found an overall sound and workflow that fits me well. I still like BBC though
Did you ever give OPUS a try?@@MattiaChiappa
please link to the video you referred to when you set up the sample modeling brass.
I’ve talked about it sooo so many times in several different videos. I can’t quite remember which. Can somebody please help this gentleman?
@@MattiaChiappa you could just share the template ;-)
You mentioned that you're using a "BREATH controller" ... i COULD NOT FIND IT IN AMAZON...!
It’s not on Amazon. It’s a breath controller from TEC
Every time I watch music bloggers show off their templates, there's one thing I can't figure out. The templates contain more than 30 tools, various libraries and plugins. In my case, I load CSS or Spitfire Studio and already at about the tenth tool disk is 100%, everything slows down and falls off. The libraries are located on the ssd, and in cubase they are output via midi channels. What's wrong?
I’m sorry if this came across as a show off, please know it wasn’t at all my intent. Maybe you’re new to the channel but this video has become a yearly tradition for my viewers. It’s quite literally the only occasion when I let myself cover this type of content that is otherwise so popular in my niche.
Anyways, let me see if I can help you. I don’t know about Cubase but the way this template is set up is just so that everything at start is disarmed and it has practically no impact on RAM. Tracks get loaded gradually the more you progress into a project. The demo you saw at the beginning must have had only 150 tracks armed at max. Also purging samples within kontakt helps too because it loads in memory only samples that you’re actually using.
Personally I can say that, working with an older computer, resource limitations can often hinder your music production workflow. One effective strategy I've found to overcome these limitations is to move away from the traditional "big orchestral template" and instead focus on creating smaller, genre/mood/project-specific templates. These ones contain a more curated selection of instruments tailored to the specific project or musical style. In this way, you can significantly reduce the CPU, RAM, and SSD usage allowing to work faster and more efficiently and also incorporating more post-processing tools saving you time and effort in the mixing stage.
Dima Bilan, is it you ? !
Like!🙏
Can you just write out all the libraries?
