Watch the movie "So I married an axe murdere". Mike Myers plays a dual role of an American living in San Francisco who meets a gal in a butcher shop. Later introduces her to his Scottish father (played by Mike Myers). Hilarious movie!

The original 'I'm A Believer' is one of the most famous songs ever, long before the Smash Mouth cover. It was released by The Monkees in the 1960s then covered again by a few people in the 90s before Smash Mouth came along.

    "Austin Powers, I presume."
"Powers by name, powers by reputation."
"Felicity Shagwell, CIA. Shagwell by name, shag-very-well by reputation."
    "Oh, be-have."
"Not if I can help it."
Fun Fact: Rob Lowe's impression of Robert Wagner was developed several years before its appearance in the film. Lowe dated one of Wagner's daughters.
Fat Award Fact: The head-to-toe makeup for Fat Bastard, designed and created at Stan Winston Studio under the supervision of key artist Mike Smithson, would go on to earn Smithson and Michèle Burke an Academy Award-nomination for Best Makeup.
Location Location Fact: When Austin (Mike Myers) and Felicity (Heather Graham) are driving through the English countryside, Austin remarks on how the English countryside looks nothing like southern California. The entire movie was filmed in southern California. This scene was spur of the moment, with the dialogue improvised. This is evidenced by Felicity saying "What?" when Austin asks her the question.

The Star Wars crawl at the beginning might seem like a random joke for a James Bond parody... and it is... but at the time, it at least served more a meta purpose because this movie came out at the same time as The Phantom Menace in 1999. It was released just a few weeks later, which they knew was their release date when making it, and the Phantom Menace was a huge anticipated release, so they knew they could play with that hype at the time and maybe kinda fake people out a bit with a "Whoa, are we in the wrong theater? In this Star Wars?" kinda joke, considering Phantom Menace was probably playing next door.

If you want more of Mike Myers' Scottish accent. Check out the movie 'So I Married an Axe Murderer'. It's a fun movie that doesn't get talked about that much. I don't think anybody has reacted to it yet. The movie tanked at theaters. I guess nobody wanted to see Mike Myers in a romantic comedy? But it became somewhat of a cult classic due to video rentals.

Even more than the first film this one has huge nostalgia vibes for me. 1999 was the year I turned 18 and started my last year of school so the Summer of 1999 really sticks in my mind including this film. I think I maybe slightly prefer the first one (I like Heather Graham but she's no Elizabeth Hurley) but I still have a lot of love for this one. I also find it hilarious Madonna wrote a far better song ('Beautiful Stranger') for the Bond parody than she did for an actual Bond film!

Two quick things: the president, who you thought you recognized, is Tim Robbins. And when Dr Evil's chair is out of control and he said "I need a young priest and an old priest... The power of Christ compels you!", that was a reference to The Exorcist.

Should you watch Spaceballs? Yes. Absolutely. There’s some smaller references to other sci-fi pop culture films of the 70s and 80s in it, but the majority of the movie parodies Star Wars. When I first saw it as a kid I hadn’t seen any of the other films it parodies other than Star Wars and I enjoyed the film. Watching it later after having seen more films it parodies definitely made me realize the source, but that didn’t diminish my original enjoyment of the film.
In the 1980s there was a lot of nostalgia for the 1950s. Even on Nickelodeon they played reruns of shows from the 1950s like Dennis The Menace and Leave It To Beaver. So that’s how I know some of those older tv shows and movies. As we moved into the 1990s that nostalgia changed to the 1960s and by the late 1990s and early 2000s it had moved on to the 1970s. The films and tv shows of the time reflect this fascination and nostalgia. The song “I’m A Believer” was originally sung by a band called The Monkees. I’m familiar with them because I watched reruns of their tv sitcom and at some point in it there’d be scenes happening and a song of theirs would play. Like there’d be a chase scene and the song dubbed over it and other similar type of situations. It was funny! They have some great songs that I remember my parents (who are Boomers) often would play records of on the stereo in our house growing up. The transition scenes in the Austin Powers film are an homage to the 1960s skit comedy tv show Laugh In. The show played on Nick-at-night in the late 1980s early 1990s around 9-10pm. My sister and I enjoyed watching it. But yeah the show would have these transition scenes between skits with go-go dancers, etc.
The woman playing Ivana Humpalot is Kristen Johnson. She was already popular at the time this film came out because she played Sally on the tv sitcom 3rd Rock From The Sun alongside John Lithgow, French Stewart, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It’s funny to watch if you want to check it out. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is definitely well representing 1990s teens like me (he and the other teens in the show I mean) with their dress, language, attitudes, etc. I know most of my friends and classmates watched the show each week because it was funny.
If you like films that are parodies, there’s a film that came out in the early 2000s called Down With Love that stars Ewan McGregor and Renee Zwellweger. It’s a parody of romantic comedy films from the 1960s. I thought it was funny because I remember watching several either with my parents on the movie classic channels or with one of my aunts who anytime I visited we’d often watch either classic films or British tv shows (her first husband was from England and they had lived there for several decades before moving back to the states; he stayed involved with our family even after they divorced and I still called him uncle since everyone considered him part of the family even if no longer married to my aunt).
I hadn’t really ever thought about the Austin Powers theme song, but you are right it is a bop!
Don’t worry if you miss celebrity cameos. It happened to even friends and I back then seeing the film in theaters. It was usually upon rewatching with our parents when we rented the movie that they spotted celebrities that we missed. It doesn’t make the film any more or less enjoyable. It definitely seems to be a comedy film thing to do. Even older comedy films from the 1960s, etc have cameos that if it hadn’t been for my parents, aunt, or whomever older I was watching the film with I wouldn’t have known who many of the people were either. Me inquiring about it usually resulted in them deciding to elucidate with showing me other sources: films, tv shows, etc that were considered their best examples of work. A pattern I’ve noticed my sister and I have done with my niece whenever she’s watching something from the 1980s or 1990s and inquires about why someone is famous that we mention having a cameo appearance.
Great reaction as always!! Love your channel!
Also: I love the shirt! Very cool item of clothing to own! Great to wear while watching a film from the 1990s!

I was wondering if your spiffy Keith Haring shirt would make a return! I want one for myself. That artist had a tragic but inspiring life story. If you're ever in the mood for a little pop art history, the TH-cam channel Soulr has a good documentary about him.
You raise an interesting point about the comedy in this sequel being a slight step down from the first, but a followup to any beloved film is bound to face a similar dilemma. If a sequel follows the style set by the first movie, it risks being dismissed as derivative; if it branches into a new territory, critics will say it has strayed too far from its roots. I suppose that's why so few sequels match, let alone surpass, their original; for every Aliens or Terminator 2, there are hundreds of (occasionally charming) duds like The Neverending Story II and Conan the Destroyer.
Like you, I was taken aback by Austin's mention of the 80s being skippable! This film was right before 80s nostalgia really blasted off on a large scale. Just three years later, VH1 launched their extremely popular series "I Love the 80s," which spawned three seasons and numerous spinoffs into other decades (including the 70s, which Austin also dismisses). American Psycho, set prominently in the 80s, was right around the corner from this film, too! I get that the joke is that it's silly it is to write off a whole era in the first place, but the synth-loving NES fanboy in me felt attacked! 😂

Mike Myers has his same shtick that he keeps in all his movies, which is one of the reasons why a lot of older people don't like Cat in the Hat as it is Mike Myers being Austin Powers, Shrek, Dr. Evil, Fat Bastard, Wayne, and generally Mike Myers. This movie seems very all over the place in terms of parody, comedy focus, and tone compared to the first one.
