- Emergency services officials in Victoria use the 176-metre-long HMAS Choules to evacuate residents who have been left stranded at the coastal town of Mallacoota after a large blaze forced 4,000 people to take shelter on the foreshore. On 3 January, a defence force official tells the townspeople: 'Once you'e aboard and it's safe they'll do a final head count and it's about a 10-15 minute transit over there. Once you're in location, you'll be provided with some food, some water and accommodation.'

when it comes to nature probably completely the opposite; terrible fires must have touched huge areas even before men turned up; fires provide a kind of restart for nature, one that has its own sigificance for rebulding and rebalancing of populations; there are even plants which grains start growing only after great heat coming from fire; as much as we feel sorry for people, we need to remember - this is what nature is about: life and death circle

The most orderly evacuation I've ever seen, just another day at the office, even for civilians. Really well done, huge respect to all involved.

We have extensive information available 24/7 on the exact status of everything that's happening, I mean there are limits, since even the authorities can't anticipate what the fires will do & all human & computer models have been broken by the size of the fires & are no longer able to provide usable data on what is going to happen next, but people are being kept as informed as possible & being treated with respect & value, so why would they panic?
You panic if you think you will be left on your own to die. These people were made to know there was no risk of that, so of course they're going to do their bit to help things run smoothly & get as many people (and pets) out as quickly & efficiently as possible.
In Australia we say "she'll be right mate" cause panicking doesn't help anyone does it, but we're also made to believe she will be right by authorities looking out for us - for real, not just pretending.
The inclusion of over 100 pets (dogs, cats, rabbit, bird) on that evacuation shows fairly well the respect & compassion those doing the evacuation had for the people in their care, so why would you panic when even your dog is being seen as high value & worth saving?
This is so similar to movies where an apocalyptic-type disaster has happened. I never thought it would be something that became so real, let alone in Victoria

@;- faded If you want to solve the breathing issue, bunning sell painters p2 masks for about $60, rubber mask with side filters, ww2 gas mask style. They look ridiculous to wear, but they completely block all smoke without limiting air intake/outtake at all - they're designed to be worn all day everyday in occupations like painting without any discomfort. Doesn't help the fear of the fire getting closer or reduce the heat, but if the breathing's really worrying you, I would highly recommend one! I have asthma & mine has been a godsend for me! I wear it almost everytime I go outside at the moment (although I have started checking for smoke, cause I felt rather silly when I wore it for about a week & didn't realise the smoke had cleared & I didn't need it on the last day or 2 I was wearing it lol. It 100% blocks the smoke, so you can't tell if there is smoke or how thick - other than from the eye irritation) Anyway stay safe :)

Lovely to see that young man had taken his bunny with him. Nothing would make me leave my pets. Nothing.
Yeah, I live in the Netherlands and we're all terrified of the waterlevels rising and any floods happening. Last year our bunny Mika (Michelangelo) died, but before that, we were always talking about who'd take the bunny in a bag and who'd bring food for him. And even, if worst came to worst and there was a tsunami that flooded the house in minutes, how we'd give him a painless way out before rescueing ourselves. I'm glad that scenario can no longer happen with him.
There were over 100 pets (dogs, cats, the bunny & a bird) evacuated by the Australian navy along with the 1000 people. I'm proud of my country's authorities understanding of the emotional importance of our pets & to not even consider putting us in the horrible situation of having to choose if we want to be saved at the cost of our pets lives! That's one of the most inspiring parts of this rescue imo :)
@@Widdekuu91 sorry to hear about your bunny. I lost mine a few years ago now, but I still miss him. Like you, there's no way I would have left him, I was ready to take him if I had to evacuate due to fire or similar. I would have hidden him not euthinased if told I couldn't take him in the situation I was in. So many people don't realise what wonderful companion animals house rabbits are!

Lizards are dying too :'( fortunately less than for some wildlife, since ones like the blue tongues in particular tend to like backyards & can often find somewhere to hide from the main heat in areas around homes that are being protected by the firefighters

Going on holiday is bad PR. Really bad PR. Certainly not treason. He should've known better and his fleet of advisers should've known better. Posting holiday snaps also didn't help especially considering those photos could have been taken in many coastal Australian towns. But those towns are no longer standing.

I’m in Melbourne and can barely see my backyard or out my front window. Can’t imagine what it’s like out near the fires.

450 million animals have died. Koalas were already endangered I believe and 1/3 of their remaining population have just been wiped out. And Aus has another 2 months of this, it's actually heartbreaking

Agriculturalists have a lot to answer for, too. Abusing water - simply because they can pay for the rights, and clearing so many trees (to accommodate auto steer tractors, no less) that the hydrologic cycle inevitably breaks. Way to go, Aussie farmers!

I live in the United kingdom, all be it not so United nowadays unfortunately, I'm heartbroken for you all and feel completely useless and unable to do a single thing to help, my heart goes out to everyone Including all the animals that wont make it through this very very sad time

Absolutely awful. My daughters friend is in Canberra and the fires are not far off. The air quality is currently the worst in the world. They are just waiting now to see what happens.
People come together in bad times.

The neighbors who haven't spoken to each other started helping and communicating.
The young ones made new friends and shared their experiences.
A boy or a girl felt in love.
