  • Although Halloween in Germany isn't celebrated to the same extent as it is in the United States, that doesn't mean that the region isn't short on haunted and bewitching sites. From Grimm's Fairytales to medieval witch hunts, the Black Forest in Germany is home to many wicked folklore of fiction and reality. Come along with us as we take the Hell's Valley Train (Höllentalbahn), hike the Magic Forest Path (Zauberwald-pfad) and eat lunch at Unterkrummenhof on the Schluchsee.

    Der Schluchsee ist ein Stausee. Vor einigen Jahren (ca 1980) wurde er abgelassen, da die Staumauer repariert wurde. Man konnte die Reste der Häuser und Wege sehen, die nach dem Bau des Staumauer überflutet wurden. Das war sehr interessant, als ich als Kind mit meiner Mutter dort war.

    I made a small solo hike in the night last night, to a wasser quelle, with just my head flashlight and my normal flashlight, and it ended up being a pretty heavy hike going down and then up again, and due to the water spring it’s so noisy you barely hear anything else… I understand why some people might find it a bit spooky, but I mostly felt at peace, I have tremendous respect for the ancient forests and I think they know or feel that. I asked for safe passage and I came back in one piece, although looking back at it it was reckless and dangerous especially getting the water, I could’ve easily slipped and hit my head on the rocks and drowned… but I have good gear. I did have feeling I was being watched for a little bit. But nothing malevolent, probably an animal. :) I love this piece of Germany I’m from die Niederlände aber, if I had the money to move over here tomorrow, for the rest of my life? I would take it. I never understood all those Germans going to Zeeland and other parts of Netherlands… Germany is so beautiful and gemütlig… and the people are polite and friendly for the most part - I like Germans better than Dutch to be honest…

    Many years ago I had a visit from an US colleague. I worked in the northern part of Baden-Württemberg and he asked my during dinner about Black Forest. His first question: "when is it open?" I was completely surprised by this question. I understood it verbally but what did he mean? It took some time and finally I got a clue: I his mind the Black Forest was something like a national park as e.g. Yellowstone! I told him about cities in Black Forest and there is also no entrance fee... .

    • @TypeAshton
      @TypeAshton  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      haha oh wow! That is so funny. Yes I can kind of understand his frame of mind with the reference to Yellowstone and the gated entrances.
      I know that my Dad was really surprised when he visited on how varied the landscape was. We took him up near Sankt Margen and Titisee. He said he thought it was only a dense forest, but was surprised to see sweeping meadows and farms as well.

    I absolutely love your videos! It is so beautiful to see how you discover Freiburg and nearby areas.
    Personally, I´m a big fan of the Europaprk in Rust. It is one of the biggest amusement parks and it has rollercoasters, attractions, restaurants and other activities for every age category. Especially in the Halloween, Christmas or Easter season it is beautiful to visit. They put up amazing decorations and have themed shows for every season. Sadly, the entrance tickets are really pricey but the experience is worth every cent.
    For a cheaper adventure I can recommend the „Glasbläserei“ in Wolfach, called Dorotheenhütte. It is all about the history of class making, combined with a big shop for glass souvenirs. You can even make your own vase there.
    The „Zauberweg am Hasenhorn“ in Todtnau is also a great experience. It is a hiking tour made for families telling a beautiful story while getting a great view over the landscapes there.

I have also heard wonderful things about EuropaPark and I think we are going to need to plan a trip there when Jack is old enough to enjoy some of the little kiddo rides. Thank you so much for the great recommendations! We will definitely be adding them to our list of vlogs to make!

      Well, we were at teh Glasbläserei in Wolfach a few weeks ago. Not that impressed tbh. A few small areas to look at, a big shopping area with Kristallglas (not cheap) and you only can decide how your vase shall look like and then watch someone creating it in front of you.

    • @kiri7606
      @kiri7606 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@luckyqualmi These things must have change due to covid. My family and I went there like every other year and there was always a lot to look at. Especially for kids it is really impressive. I have some vases at home that I made there myself, so they must have changed that because of the virus.

    I love the Schluchsee! We call it our second home because we came there for holidays two times a year since I was a child. There is also a really cool spot nearby. Maybe you know the famous blackforest beer "Rothaus". The brewery is only 6 km away from Schluchsee. And there is a little train, the "Rothaus Express", which brings you from the trainstation Schluchsee to Rothaus and which is also really great for kids. In Rothaus you can visit the brewery and the really good restaurant. And if you want to go for a walk, you should visit the "Schlühüwanapark", which is nearby. There are many wooden figures like dragons, mermaids, witches along the way, what makes it really magical. There is also the beautiful black forest house "hüsli", a museum, which was part of the series 'die Schwarzwaldklinik'.

    • @TypeAshton
      @TypeAshton  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wow that sounds AMAZING. I am pretty sure if when I tell Jonathan that there is such think as a "beer train" he might book our tickets immediately. That sounds like such a fun experience that we are for sure going to have to add to our list. Thank you for the recommendation!

    In the Middle Ages, the Black Forest was a dark jungle with few paths where strangers could easily get lost. It was also a very poor and poor area. The cuckoo clocks weren't carved for fun on the dark winter nights. It was simply necessary in the season of the year when the field work was stopped to produce something that could later be sold. The Black Forest used to be more of an area where people moved away when they could.
    Today it looks different. Even in winter, the places can be reached by road. Even if you definitely need winter tires. There are heated houses, workplaces and Internet connections to the wide world.
    I've been to the Black Forest many times, summer and winter, and know the area around the Schluchsee well. Our church has a holiday home very close by. For financial reasons it no longer belongs to the church, has been sold, but every now and then we are there to rent for a few weeks.
    (The problem was that the church, not the big churches, is recognized as a non-profit, but at the same time operated a holiday home, so it made little profit, the tax office no longer wanted to approve it.)

    • @TypeAshton
      @TypeAshton  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is only partially related to your comment, but I am really fascinated by the property history of churches in Germany. When we were house hunting, we came across a few houses for sale where the house was for sale, but the land it sat on was a 99 year church lease. We had never heard of something that before coming from the States and it is something I would like to learn more about. I minored in architectural history in undergrad and grad school, and the role of the church in property development has always been an interesting topic for me.

    Hi there,
    great channel! Thanks for sharing!
    While watching a couple of expat’s channels I keep wondering why it is that since most of them seem to enjoy the experience they wouldn’t really seriously learn the language anyway. I heard you say in one of your videos that you were on a B1 level, while you have been in Germany for 7 or 8 and 2 or 3 years respectively and seem to really be committed to your life there and enjoy some of the benefits of beeing a part of their society. Could you maybe speak to that from your perspective in one of your videos? Is it too hard to learn? or do you kind of lack motivation maybe since you’re getting along with english? I’d appreciate learning about your views on this. Thanks and keep going!

    If you are ever near Triberg again, maybe plan for a visit in Gutach im Schwarzwald for the Vogtsbauernhof. It's a museum with historic farms from the region and they teach about the different crafts the people worked to make a living in the past.
    I myself should take the time to visit them again, because since my last visit they opened four more historic buildings. But as always, if it's near where you live (well, now only near my parents) you don't take as much time with the local attractions as one should.

    The Black Forest, geological spoken, is very old and has a sister called the "Vogesen" on the other side of the Rhine-River.in France.65 million years before a rift valley was growing. It's like a long cliff, in the northern part pretty steep. You can have maybe 25 kilometers beeline and more than 900 meters downwards. If you want to check this out by bike, take the "Oppenauer Steige", which is sort of a very steep and slim serpentine road. Pretty adventurous by car because there are not so many crash barriers

    I like this restaurant also very much. Mostly simple food, but totally tasty. And after biking or walking round the lake ( how we did ), it is tasting double good.
    By the way, there is a book called "Die Hexe von Freiburg", which describes the life of a woman who was interrogated 3 times from the Inquisition. After 3 times they were not allowed to do it again, but they wanted to trick her out. Very realistic book.

    If you like beautiful landscape you should visit the Nonnenmattweiher in the Kleines Wiesental south of Freiburg.
    The Nonnenmattweiher is a small lake with a swimming isle of turf. When the former monks of St. Trudpert dammed the lake above an high bog parts of the turf swam on the lake...
    Greatings from the Northern Black Forest - that part where "Das kalte Herz" is coming from.

    i think the narrowest part was only the river . i believe the road was cut into the stone wall .
    One The best parts of the Hollental has been dismantled . there use to be a a walking trail on the other side of the river that had a small tunnel cut through the rock . then in some places there were wooden and metal supports attached to the cliff face for a walkway . after that it widens out and the original trail can still be seen .

    Hi, how much it approximately costed you to build your own house and what is better building a house or buying house

    • @TypeAshton
      @TypeAshton  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. The cost varies GREATLY from city to city so I don't want to generalize on cost. However, I will mention that buying a house which is under construction (vs. a completed house or one that was owned previously) is that you don't typically have to pay makler provision fees (real estate agent fees). In the past this was typically paid 100 percent by the buyer, but things look like they may be changing to where it is split. But for example, if a property costs 350,000 euros and the broker's commission is 7.14% in total, the seller and buyer each have to pay 3.57% = 12,495 euros brokerage fee.

    • @TypeAshton
      @TypeAshton  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi there! It really depends on the trip. We have two dogs (Java (my dog) is 7 years and Georgia (Jonathan's dog) is 11 years). Java is my morning running buddy and helps me feel safe when running in the dark.
      We used to take them both on long hikes, but Georgia has gotten quite old and isn't able to tolerate any walk longer than a 3km. Java is a rescue dog and has a lot of anxiety. Any trip that involves a car or train sends her into a panic. As of late, if we go on longer day trips we keep the two together at home since they can keep each other company and hire a dog sitter to come by our house every 6 hours to play, walk and feed.

    when people call Freiburg the green capital of Germany it is for political reasons, because of "Bündnis90/Die Grünen" (Germanys green party).
    apart from the megapolis Ruhrpott it is green everywhere in Germany because the mountain ranges in Europe stretch from east to west, therefore the jet-stream winds can carry wet air from the oceans deep into the continent.
    unlike to the US where both mountain ranges, the appalachian and the rocky mountains, prevent humidity from entering the vast center of your continent.

    • @TypeAshton
      @TypeAshton  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there! I think there might be a misunderstanding or that I wasn't totally clear in my statement. Granted, the Green party does have a significant following in Freiburg (I cannot vote so I don't know exact numbers or get too involved). However, what I meant by referencing this is that Freiburg is both a green city in the literal (color) and figurative (green technology) sense.
      I have taught courses at the University with the Master's of Environmental Governance, and one of the things that is often discussed is how Freiburg is acknowledged internationally as the "Green City" in Germany. This is because of its pioneering engineering in sustainable technologies, energy, transportation and building design. There is now an entire industry around Green tourism here where there are organized tours for groups to visit different sites.
