I think the best worth Mac Mini M4 starts with 512go of storage, and from there you can add up to 1 or 2TB of external SSD Nvme. If you take 256go sooner or later it won't be sufficient (system update and so on) For me the future proof Mac Mini M4 is : 512go storage, 24go ram (to keep running with Apple Intelligence and still do great job in multi tasks) + add external storage in NvMe plugged in Thunderbolt to enjoy full speed SSD.
I just did almost exactly the same thing yesterday. I had gotten the base m4 and the sabrent thunderbolt 3 enclosure and the WD ssd 1TB 770 gaming drive . Speeds are great
As I said in the video, it’s really just a matter of choice. If you build you own, you do have more choices of the brand of drive (speed, memory type, etc) you use. And you have some ability to upgrade it down the road as memory drops (hopefully) in price. Good question!
I don’t remember the context, but if there’s a failure with the internal storage, it will likely be a LOT more expensive to replace (provided you can eventually buy the proprietary drive) The overall gist of the video is this: in a perfect world, Apple would charge $50 for the 1tb upgrade, and they’d still make a profit on it. But since that isn’t the case, I’m trying to show that the advantages of adding your own storage may just overcome the inconvenience of an external enclosure, and the potential speed differences. Just trying to give people options and help them make their own decisions. Thanks for watching.
I personally used the Terminal method to put my home folder on my external drive. The only issue with putting the home folder externally is Apple Intelligence won't work from an external drive.

how is the heat management?
thanks for the video. i will get my m4 mac mini on Friday, cant wait!
Love the video. Good alternative to other ways to get more storage. I was curious if Sabrent makes a Thunderbolt 4 version of this case? Thanks.
Anyone know if there will be an option for mini M4 Pro?

Nice! I went cheaper, but I’m glad to hear you like the TB3 enclosure. I’ll have to check it out.
I'm thinking base myself...are you worried about the 256gb filling up ? As far as program files and things related to the OS ?
I'd prefer a TB enclosure over USB, purely for the speed improvement. Especially the TB5 ones with a Pro or Max CPU.
Is there any TB5 enclosure out in the market now? Because I don’t see any.
Using a 2TP Samsung 990 Pro external SSD board, I have saved £600
over the Apple web options.
Speaking from experience, do not rely on external drives...just don't. They eject and unmount like crazy
What's the advantage of this vs buying a sandisk SSD (the price seems to be similar)

what about speeds of the external drive ? isn't better a thunderbolt 4 case ? can i run nicely apps from the external ssd ? thanks
A TB4 enclosure would be theoretically faster, but would also increase the price a bit. But they are coming down in price so keep an eye out on them.
I saw another video stating a HOME FOLDER…?? 📂??

my comment keeps geting deleted.. what's wrong with TH-cam.... waste of time platform.
