I remember that piece of land when I was a kid in the 80s was a old air raid shelter from world war 2 and everybody tried to get into it and sandwell council destroyed it in the 90s and there was a uproar about it! and it was covered with large concrete roof to stop people accessing it but never heard story about it being a park?
Thanks Mickey, a very interesting piece of info that. It could mean that its use as a park was very short lived. I never knew of its importance during ww2 so thanks for filling in the gaps.
A great video Phil,Sandwell hospital will be changing their name to Sandwell health campus now the a and e have moved to the new hospital, there has also been an application to demolish old victorian parts of it which I presume is the old hallam side and build a six storey apartment block,12 houses and a convenience store which will be for key workers such as NHS staff, police and firefighters, the physio and other departments will move to the new hospital or where a and e were
Thanks MrDj I had heard that the hospital was to have some changes but I was not aware to the extent that you have described. I see the word Demolish has been mentioned, West Broms favourite word. Appreciate the info
Hi Phil enjoyed the walk down and around Hallam Hospital I liked the History of the work house's and I remember the allotments and the Churchfeilds school bus would pass those tree's I never realised that was a park at the end of your walk all the best Paul
Brilliant vlog mate. Yeah the Churchfields inn/tavern was such a beautiful, pleasant pub for everyone to enjoy, kids little play area and the freshly made cobs on request were a delight with a fresh pint. Ohh what memories 👍
Ive never heard of anyone giving it a bad name it does sound as though it was a lively, sociable pub and sad now that its all gone, thanks bs for the comment
Those work houses were condemned to history, however it’s good in a way to see history remembered for what it was. It obviously won’t have the same memories for people who experienced that era.
I never would've thought that little grass area was a park...Oh & when you read the plaque about the workhouse on the antenatal clinic on Hallam Street I'm really surprised you didn't show the one to your left stating that Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy was born there as well bab!😉🤘
I don't know if you know this Phil, the Physiotherapy building on Lewisham Street was originally built as the hospital for the poor people who lived in the work house.
I'm surprised you were confused by "Mrs Joseph Hamblet". Until the 1970's, women were officially known by their husband's name - my mum was referred to as "Mrs George Bailey". ps. I notice that the phone box is labelled on the 1946 map, so there's been one there for about 80 years!
Thanks Dadge, yes that explains it. It makes sense now, but todays modern world completely clouded my knowledge of what was a fairly common occurrence back in the early 70s, thanks again.

I spent most of 1973 in hallam as a little kid after being knocked down...3 meals a day, no school, and young nurses ....happy days

I suspect that the park had been disbanded quite a long time ago. Many thanks

Wow, a park in Hallam Street. You would never have thought it!
It certainly surprised me

Very true

Thanks for that, completely missed it, just saw that blue plaque and thought that was it. Will have to check that one out next time
Hallam hospital was a work house, my gran would never go there, most have been frightening to still be scared after all them years
Such a shame😢
I don't know if you know this Phil, the Physiotherapy building on Lewisham Street was originally built as the hospital for the poor people who lived in the work house.
I knew of the infirmary added in 1925 but I wasn't aware that that was the building, many thanks for the info
