What happened to the spirit of shows like this? We need more openings that just celebrate how badass the robot is. Nu metal and giant swords are awesome, but this needs to make a comeback.
Only to the adult swim generation sorry, fucking no. I like Evangelion, but it has in no way "overshadowed" any original mecha Anime and is simply an echo of the actual era. A refreshing echo, but an echo nonetheless. It's like saying Elvis and the Beatles were overshadowed by fucking Green day. In 100 years nobody will remember green day but you will have to understand who Elvis and The Beatles are whether you like them or not and it will be taught in schools and mentioned in journalism forever when the subject of rock music is being discussed. You can't overshadow the actual thing. No matter how many generations ignore it and pay attention to what is popular, it remains what it is/was forever. Do you remember New Kids on the Block? They were said to have "overshadowed" the Beatles. Your kids won't know who N' Sync were either. Heh. But Evangelion was a very, very good show *for its time.*

Zambot 3 however still being Super Robot with monster of the week and needing to fulfill an action quota doesn’t allow for much character and nuance, making the character deaths a million times more cruel.

While this one is not from Tomino I wanted to say that Go Nagai's Mazinger series from the 70s were also pretty damn tragic and bloody too; although yeah Tomino is a little bit like George R. Martin in terms of killin' characters left and right.
Go Nagai’s Groizer X had a very dramatic tone one year before Zambot 3 (despite it was bad-written) with people dealing with the consequences of the war.

Usually when you have a combining mecha team it's either three or five members for some reason, though there was one show where it was just two people and one where there was a team of four but they didn't combine at all. (There's also Gun X Sword which has El Dora 5, which has five units but one of the pilots died so there's only four left.)
I learned the whole song as a child and when I grew up and made Japanese friends I sang it for them and they told me I had it right. What a great story, they had so many things right. Truly sad.
The color code started with Getter, the hot blooded protagonist takes red, the stoic, rebellious, charming loner gets blue, and the kind hearted fat guy yellow. Voltes and combattler added the kid in green and the girl in pink. Golion messed up the color coding, the uniform colors reflect the role of the characters, but since the first lion forms the main body it has to be balck/white a standard color pattern inherited by Mazinger Z, then the rest of the lions have to be reassigned.
I don't understand, why did Tomino in the mid-70s know that a proper "adult" mecha show ISN'T about plain blood and fanservice, while Anno couldn't get it in 90s, despite Zambot, Ideon and Zeta existing by his time?
That would be Go Nagai, Tomino kills main characters, but still puts drama and good feelings, Go Nagai instead puts gore and extreme violence. If Tomino's main theme is that war is bad and only brings suffering, Go Nagai's theme is that if you want to beat a cruel villain you must be even more cruel and terryfing than the villain.

Having watched some of Zambot, yikes yeah this was freaking dark. And quite frankly, after watching some of Tomino’s later works, this is quite a damn frustrating anime and robot show. Whatever is said of Tomino’s other and later works like the various Gundam, Ideon, and Dunbine, they are at least given the excuse to be tragic because they are really war series. Them being Real Robo shows allows for way more character and nuance, allowing the protags to ponder and be affected by these tragedies. The deaths in these shows are heartbreaking but understandable. Zambot 3, being the formulaic super robo show with monsters of the week and needing to fulfill an action quota doesn’t allow for any character and nuance, thus making the deaths a million times more cruel and anger-inducing.

Despite normally enjoying deconstructions... this show is painful to watch for me. You can TASTE the hate and cruelty.
It's not the death or destruction, it's the tragedy in wich Tomino excels.
The moon on its head reminds me of Gurren-Lagann, maybe that's where Gainax got the idea from...
