    Man I'm sure glad I found your channel, you are a great instructor. As a 60 year old mechanic I find myself lost on the ECM's in my Dodge trucks, which the 1991 is about to be modified back to a carburetor and a points distributor like the earlier models.

    A friend gave me some random stuff a while back and in it was one of those little high frequency transformers. It had a center tapped bifilar primary so when I saw it had a decent arc from feeding half of the primary a square wave I tried just wiring it up as a blocking oscillator and it gave me an amazing arc from something around 5 watts. It was surprising similar input and output compared to what I got using the frequency and on time I ended up liking the most from the square wave generator so it must have been a fairly low duty cycle still able to output the burning plasma. The arc was way longer than it should have been, something close to an inch and I was going to make a battery arc lighter from it but stuuuuupidly tried 'potting' it with gorilla wood glue and it ruined the secondary. Similar transformers I pulled from LCD monitors wouldn't perform the same. Been trying to get into flybacks again recently and I always think of that little transformer.. tape was gone too along with the part number. I'll def be absorbing what I can from this video over the next week or so I've just been slacking on scrounging for some 12v zeners.

      @@anekdoche7055 You're scared to fry stuff? Mate, you're making a device that fries stuff lol.
      You're probably going to need something of decent size and speed. Let me give you some tips on how to figure out what will work.
      The wattage you will need is around 120W, consider the size of the magnetic components needed to move that kind of power ( IE the small transformer in a 5v1A phone charger VS the transfo'rmer in a laptop PSU ) This will give you insight on what magnetic mass you need.
      Note that most ferrite cores will work as long as they are not for filtering purposes and will eat your power and got hotter/have slow response.
      You will want to skirt as close to the minimum core size needed as the TC itself is an air gap core that typically has a much faster frequency than the response of magnetic materials.
      You will want to wrap decently thick wire around your core, I'd say 2mm width of EM wire would do and you'd probably find a good spot between 10-20 turns.
      I hope that helps you grasp a bit more what your options are, how they work together, and how to select/make your needed inductors for this and future projects.

    • @Zenodilodon
      @Zenodilodon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A video on full bridge circuits is in the future, that particular board that I used in the video is a prototype though and has some minor issues. It's based off the SG3525 IC which is analogous to the TL494 and is a dual output IC. We used a totem to drive the P channel mosfets. The issue with the current configuration is in the phasing between the 2 sides and thus the mosfets get hot since there it not a solid off during the 0 crossing.

      I don't recommend putting mosfets in parallel, this can mess with things and I have has situations where instead of starting the osculation it turns on on both sides a bit more and cooks mosfets. I would just step up to using a larger mosfet instead for this application.

    I watched all the video and you explain everything, but I don't understand how did you connect the zvs driver to the tesla primary and secondary (the tesla pen)

    • @Zenodilodon
      @Zenodilodon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same as any transformer in the video. You have a primary with 3 legs on for each mosfet out and then the center tap for ground. For use like a plasma pen any high voltage ZVS will do the same thing if you ground yourself placing the " closest wire to primary " of your secondary coil to yourself acting as a ground and then placing a sharp tip on the furthest secondary output. Please also not the pen is NOT a tesla coil, it uses a rewound CCFL inverter transformer. It's just a high voltage transformer and ZVS crammed into a little tube.

    • @Zenodilodon
      @Zenodilodon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Running tesla coils of ZVS can get tricky as they often don't have much magnetic if any for proper ringing on a ZVS, other options like spark gap or other transistor set ups will be better for running an open air core transformer like a traditional tesla coil, The ZVS works great for magnetic transformers.

    • @Zenodilodon
      @Zenodilodon  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you figure out the differences and find a working solution for a tesla coil? You can also try to play with magnetic transformers more on ZVS. There are Tesla coils that use ZVS + high voltage transformer to charge a capacitor bank for a decent sized spark gap tesla coil.
      Also did you find the other video I spoke of on Join The Technicians?

And I myself wanted to create one, so I made ZVS circuit as shown in your video of plasma pen then I tested it using LEDs as shown in this video , it worked fine but when I connected it to transform then there was literally no output voltage not even small voltage, I think my transformer was also fine as when I connected it with 9V battery then at time of conncting it to battery current jump up and goes down on disconnecting so it had shown a small voltage output just with battery, so transformer was fine. But I think switching was not occuring when I connect ZVS to transformer or may be another problem. Can you tell me a way to fix this issue?

    • @Zenodilodon

      Your inductor is probably the cause. There have been situations where I have tried inductors at random and it makes the circuit not work at all. • @Zenodilodon
      @Zenodilodon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the largest problem for ZVS stuff for most people is the calculations. It's not exactly straight forward. It's similar to an LC oscillator circuit in that you have inductance and capacitance in the equation however due to there being 2 magnetic components the inductor and transformer it becomes much more tricky to get the optimal balance. This is why I went through so many different set ups and included both success and failures to show physical correlation and effects of changing parts out. hello I love your guys videos and got inspired to make something like the plasma pen from your videos. I have all the parts but am having issues with it. a couple days ago I got the circuit running nice and it was throwing about 1 inch arcs running about 2.4amps@9.6v off a homemade zvs but the circuit suddenly stopped working while it was running and started drawing alot more amps and the arcs were gone. long story short I changed every single part on the circuit including 3 different sets of mosfets. and still same thing except I realized that there was actually output on the secondary but I had to short circuit it to get an arc and could only draw the arc out like a mm. while still pulling 3 amps from my batteries. and when I tried making a different inductor with a screwdriver the current dropped to around only 2 amps but still the same size arcs. do you know why this is happening? thank you

    • @Zenodilodon
      @Zenodilodon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to hear you enjoy the content. It sounds like your secondary has failed in an area and this is causing the draw of current and lack of output power. It sounds exactly what happens when we had breakdowns in our secondaries. A good way to manage this is to write the resistance of the secondary down. If that drops lower then you know it's done. There is also another way of doing ZVS which has a center tapped inductor, or 2 inductors of equal size attached to how the transformer is attached in this video. Than you just put a 2 wire primary transformer on the 2 outer taps of the inductor/s It works amazingly well. If you e-mail me I can send you pictures of how this is put together.

    @ about 5:30 - Should you have said "Negative at source PULLS DOWN the other fet and turns it off"? I'm completely thrown off by you saying a negative current flows against the cathode of a diode. I'm super new to this hobby so I may be missing something obvious but I don't get the negative current flowing reverse bias THROUGH a diode. Maybe electrons flowing through that way? Or most likely just could have misunderstood.

    • @Zenodilodon
      @Zenodilodon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The negative current flows through the Mosfet that is in the conducting state and through the diode back to the other Mosfet gate turning it off until the next cycle of phase shift in the magnetic components of the circuit. Both Mosfets have a pull up from the resistors and will want to be on at the same time without the diodes to ensure only one Mosfet is on at a time.
      Self oscillating circuits are a very tricky thing to learn because they are so dependent on the physical parameters of operation that can be quite hard to translate without a litany of demonstration, hence the long video provided to hopefully help provide enough piece for anyone to get enough comprehension to learn a practical working model in the best method for all.

      @@Zenodilodon So let me tell you where this has me all F*$#ed up. I'm certain you know the way a full bridge rectifier works so lets use that example. On the negative end the voltage/current is not able to flow reverse bias through one diode and then flows up into the positive/live side forward bias through the other negative connected diode. So when you say there is current flow reverse through that diode I'm thinking there is some huge details I missed along the way.. is that current just the rated reverse leakage? I don't look at negative voltage as ground either, I look at it just as an upside down "positive" voltage that travels the other direction..... but I don't think I've ever heard of it flowing reverse bias through a diode. Again, maybe I'm just misunderstanding... But If I'm missing something I want to stop and take the time to learn it correctly.

    • @Zenodilodon
      @Zenodilodon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you can keep the LEDs connected, keep in mind that when the transformer is connected that you may have to handle both higher input voltages and ring up on the transformer's primary so I would advise using suitable resistors in series with the LEDs and consider using 3-5 volt zener diodes to protect them. Thanks for the complement and good luck on building your ZVS!

If you are intending to use a higher voltage select a ZD that has a decent wattage rating for larger applications.

I'm thrown off by saying a negative voltage flowing reverse through the source and through the zener.... maybe if you said electrons I wouldn't be so confused right now... what am I missing? In real physics yes electrons flow from the negative to the positive, this is how I speak because it's applicable to other fields of understanding and models.
      The electrons in this circuit flow from negative into the source through the junction and exit the drain. Zener diodes are only used for gate protection and do NOT conduct until they reach threshold voltage.
      I also try to speak of negative and ground in context as if they are applied in floating or grounded systems. Ground is not the same as negative.
