This song resonates in me because I've been there and lived it. Being so in love and living together then growing apart and not understand why. Not knowing where things WENT wrong. Keeping up appearances with friends and family with total silence to and from. The feelings of overwhelming sadness and isolation is unbearable. Communication has been reduced to a one word answer of a simple question trying to start a conversation. What was once a home is now just a house, a box where you feel trapped. So you stay out later and later after work to avoid being alone... together. Then when you arrive all the lights are off and everything is quiet with her in bed and the door closed. This song hits me hard as takes me back to a painful and difficult time in my life.

Yep this dude is an excellent songwriter and has vocal talent in the same league as Aretha Franklin, Greg Allman, etc.
Can't go a day without listening to him. He's the best.
It's funny he doesn't recall writing this. Though even he doesn't know for sure, I bet I know one of the lines that doesn't originate from him, one of the other writers wrote. The line that says "I used to cry and stay up nights and wonder what went wrong" . The very first time I heard Chris sing this song (post Womack), I thought that's a very unusual thing for Chris to pen, that doesn't sound like his way of thinking. Not the image I have of him and his way of dealing.This is one of my absolute favorite Stapleton songs. I keep it on repeat far more often than my old heart appreciates. Going to listen to it again now.

I wake up singing the song! It doesn’t apply to me, although it could have in my past. This song feels like whoever had their hands in writing it, lived it!

Granted one cannot know the inner meaning of a poem or song when I hear it i recall the time when you knew that despite the pretense of a relationship or marriage there was nothing anyone could do to save it except remain trapped for the sake of..."fill in the blank" I dont care what you do I "wont love you either way"

It’s always interesting to hear what a song means to an artist, but I prefer to hear how the song relates to whomever hears it. For me, it reminds me of a relationship I was in where I made the choice to be comfortable and miserable, instead of taking the risk and going off on my own. I would have gladly accepted a breakup if it came from her, but as far as I was concerned, the ball was in her court. I hadn’t yet learned how to take responsibility for myself.

I thought he was going to tell us about some ex-gf relationship gone bad from his past. that inspired him to write Either Way. Hearing him belt them out sure makes me think of a couple of mine. Instead, he just gives all the credit to others. Yeah he was just in the room drinking humble coffee, im sure. 😉

Well, in this case, he’s still in the building but his heart is gone from relationship.
Makes me wonder 💭 they must stay out of habit or financial reasons cause the heart break in these lyrics tells me they are even less than roommates, they are inmates.

The song is confusing because both parties seem in happy but he’s not willing to leave right? He says you can go or stay but if he doesn’t love her either way why doesn’t HE leave her that’s where I’m stuck. Have been for years on this song
The song is incredibly realistic. People stay in unhappy, loveless relationships all the time. When you are used to something, sometimes you just tolerate it.
He doesn’t want his wife now to know what it’s about.
