    Thank you for telling the world that Singapore is NOT in China! 😍
    Multiple times I try to talk to Europeans during my travels only to see their shocked faces upon hearing my "so-not-China-accent" English. And when I share that I come from Singapore, where we have our education in English, a 6 hour flight away from China, located in South East Asia and an independent country of our own, I realise how little (or misinterpreted) they know of us.

    Good that you have experienced firsthand and cleared the misconceptions foreigners have about Singapore.
    About chewing gum, it was believed that not long after MRT was in operation, there was a major train disruption. The MRT staff spent many hours trying to figure out why the doors could not be closed and eventually they discovered that it was an act of a prankster who stuck chewing gum onto the MRT door sensor and so the door could not be closed. Such act, though may seem trivial, affected the public transport service and many manhours of the public and economy.
    As for being naked in ones home, there had been cases of people going naked at their window/balcony/backyard but still within the view of others who were living at opposite flat/apartment. Bear in mind that high rise buildings are almost every where in Singapore and so the law is to protect the public at large who may feel offended seeing someone naked right opposite their house. It is of course perfectly ok if one is naked and not exposed to public view.

  • @stan_chako
    @stan_chako 6 ปีที่แล้ว +79

    You can walk around naked in your own house, as long as you are not exposing yourself visibly to others. E.g. you do not pace around naked on your balcony where others can see you. Just draw your curtain and remain unseen is fine.

      Also, if you live in HDB, there are huge chances that your living room or hall will have a window to the shared corridor. Yeah, you can't be naked in these spaces.
      Basically, if you can't be seen from "public space" without any help of visual equipment, you're fine.

    Caning is not used in the Singapore military as a corporal punishment. Caning is only meted out to a criminal who committed a serious crime such as rape, robbery, etc.

    • @AppleMacGeek
      @AppleMacGeek 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But only in civilian courts. Military courts do not mete out caning as a punishment AFAIK.

    • @deepdarksecretful
      @deepdarksecretful 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just because its not practised, does not mean its not part of the punishment methods, no? (Lookup SAF act)
      I guess if your buddy deserts you in the middle of a war, you can just fine him.....heh.

    • @justinloh2662
      @justinloh2662 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you are talking about serious or aggravated military offences, then the offender would be sentenced in a military court according to SAF Act. That would involve imprisonment with or without caning depending on the seriousness of the offence committed.
      As a Singaporean who had been through National Service, I was trying to clarify so that foreign viewers do not misconstrue that caning is used as punishment during military training.
      Desertion carries imprisonment and not caning under SAF Act:-
      Desertion
      23.-(1) Every person subject to military law who deserts shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction by a subordinate military court to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years or any less punishment authorised by this Act.

      Corporal punishment is not punishment for corporals in the military!

    I think walking naked around the house is illegal is because... well... Singaporeans live in close proximity to one another in apartment buildings. Depending on where you live, you can usually see your neighbour opposite of you in their house. So well, to make sure no one gets blasted in the face with sudden nudity (who wants that ew), the government makes it illegal to be naked in your house. However, I do feel that it really is more of a social responsibility. The law is there to make sure you understand what is appropriate, especially when you have hundreds of people living so close together. But hey if you really want to walk around in the nude in your house, just close the blinds!

  • @EdricHsu

    The "do not walk around naked at home" thing probably comes from people living so close to each other in the HDB apartments, where you can easily see across the carpark into your neighbours' units (hopefully not intentionally). Not so much about pornography but that most people do not wish to see their neighbours naked. My solution is to just install a layer of mosquito netting as a curtain, so the view is screened off for your own privacy. ;)

    I don't think it's 100% illegal to walk in your house naked. But it is NOT allowed to do so with your windows open where people can see you. & totally agree on the whole censorship. #givememyscenes

    • @eryetteyuuki2384
      @eryetteyuuki2384 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah. It is illegal because flashing is illegal. That is why if you wish to walk around naked, just make sure your curtains are down and you can do so freely!
      And I agree about the censorship. We already have different ratings for movies shown in theatres. Just give us our full scenes and should the scene be deemed "too obscene" then just tag it with as a rated movie! Or create a new tag for an uncensored movie. Besides with kids these days having the internet so easily accessible, they probably know things a lot quicker than we'd expect of them!

    Many people from other countries complain about the draconian laws in Singapore....
    I must remind them that Singapore is one of the safest and best run countries on Earth for a reason.
    Once the social fabric begins to unravel, chaos will soon follow.
    Dr. Lee Kwan Yew was the genius behind the enormous success of this small city-state.
    He placed a high value on law and order.
    Other countries, particularly the U.S., should take note.

    Hello Hello! I am happy that you have a lot of your facts right but some are wrong. Let me help you if ya don't mind.
    1. You can walk on grass.
    2. You do get fined for jaywalking but very rare cuz I myself have jaywalked a couple of times. Shhh!
    3. Caning does not occur in schools and militaries. Only for criminals who committed very serious crimes such as rape, murder and much more.
    4. Singapore is much more modern than you think. Everyone here has a comfortable place to live due to our common housing type which is our very own and affordable HDB (Housing Development Board) houses which are improving every year in-terms of features but deproving space a bit cuz of our limited land as we are a growing island.
    5. We have crazy cool stuff like the #1 airport in the whole world which we call Changi. Currently we have 4 terminals and a newly-built Shopping mall and built-in apartments called Jewel which is right beside and is part of Changi.
    6. Singlish is not much alien but instead it is simply a few words in Chinese mixed with English and us Singaporeans are kinda lazy so we shorten our words such as "Walao" which means "What la eh?" It is to show that you are annoyed and pissed off.
    There is much more but I don't have time to continue typing so byeeeeeeeeee. :D
    I am subbed to you btw.

    Enjoyed your video very much
    To correct you... Corporal punishment (ie. Caning) does not exist in schools anymore.
    But you're right that it exist in our judicial court & military
    And here's another Singlish word to add to your vocab ... "Hosay!"
    Cheers

    Just a note for foreigners, if u arent sure whether u will be able to understand the Singaporean umm language? Just ask a younger generation like 12-30 as they most likely will be able to speak english fluently with less of a dialect compared to the elderly

    It is highly offensive to ask a Singaporean Chinese if they're from China. I get super annoyed if foreigners were to ask this question. The map indicates clearly that we're far away from that country. It is akin to us going to the UK and ask the local if they were Americans.

    That law where it is illegal to strut around naked has a valid point. In every city there will always be creepy voyeurs that like to watch their neighbours through open clear windows. This can be especially true in apartments where police in the past have found telescopes or binoculars in a suspect's dwelling.

  • @hipposamadesu
    @hipposamadesu 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    the reason why walking naked in own house is considered illegal is the "commotion" caused by neighbors who "accidentally" peek into your house and then post a viral video. yes, there are peeping toms in singapore, some have sophisticated night viison binoculars. so to avoid this kind of happening, always make sure all your windows are protected with curtains and you can do whatever you want in own house.

    It is quite easy to bring in chewing gum i do it all the time all i do is open up the bottles/packets and take one and i can bring it it. However im not sure how many bottles/packets you can bring it. I brought it max 2 bottles. At least your bottles are open, the immigration officers would close an eye and let you in. If your wondering why open the bottles. It is to "show" the immigration officers that the chewing gum are not for sale but for own comsumtion.

      there was a law like that back in the 80s, which many people attributed to what killed the local music scene due to the rise of rock and roll at that time. (back in the 60s and 70s, sg had a pretty good music scene) but now, this law does not exist anymore although many locals still prefer men to have short hair. for instance, schools have hair and attire checks that forbids male students from having hair that touches their ears or eyebrows, which is a very stupid rule in my opinion.

    It is only illegal to be naked in your own home when you are exposed to public view, this is because most of us live in HDB flats which are in close proximity to each other.

  • @sdaer7581
    @sdaer7581 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The "can't be naked in your own home" law was a reaction to a couple living in a HDB flat, parading themselves naked with curtains opened. The neighbours complained; the police was unable to persuade the couple to cover up. So, the Parliament drew up a law specifically to address that one situation.

    Yes we do get caning in school but its very very rare

  • @AndrePHK
    @AndrePHK 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's due to the built up nature of our housing that we could see basically what our neighbours are doing. That would constitute "indecent exposure". That's the reason for the law about being naked in your own house. That's not far fetched if you consider the implications. Corporal punishment egg caning, is a much better deterrent as compared to a fine as "most" law breakers are able to pay up. Caning is usually reserved for serious offences like rapes, robberies etc. Hope this explains some of our rather "peculiar" laws.

  • @shiro4485
    @shiro4485 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, it is illegal to be naked in your own home - but with a caveat. Under Section 27A of the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act, Chapter 184, a person cannot be naked in a private place while being exposed to public view. This law came into effect in Feb 27, 1996.

    caning in school is not allowed in sg. the teachers are not allowed hit, slap or any sort of physical and even verbal abuse. they dont also use caning as punishment in military. mostly soldiers get injured bcause of training but nvr been made to sit still and get hit. usually their punishments i think is just more physical training. the only place tht cane is prison.

    Hi Georgia, Singaporean here.
    Let me clear up the misconception about it being illegal to walk around the house naked.
    Several years ago, there was this young Chinese couple living in one of the high-rise apartments who had the habit of walking around the house stark naked with the windows fully open, and therefore in full view of their neighbours including children. Most Singaporeans live in public housing comprising apartment blocks in close proximity. The couple was fined for indecent exposure. The law is targeted at exhibitionists such as these, and so is no different from the laws in most civilised societies.
