The further Knives development just more lampshades the whole why was she so obsessed with Scott problem. Fundamentally Kim, Envy, Knives and Ramona are still just created to inexplicably have Scott dripping in talented, beautiful women. You can have Knives grow out of that in the six minute video above but we don't understand whatever lack of confidence caused it.
Teenage crushes work like that. It wouldnt surprise me her losing Scott was exactly what she needed to take a good look at their "relationship" and realize he was kinda crummy and that she deserves better. Not to mention he budding talent as a musician and newfound friendship with SBO might have helped vent her feelings about him. The unfortunate truth about these narratives is that its easy to love everyone but you can out your attention on all of them at once or you lose the plot so things like Knives character arc could only be implied
The Japanese version gave her more of a typical young anime girl voice, which isn’t a bad thing, but the softer, slightly lispy voice Ellen does for her feels a little more uniquely fitting to her character.
She was already more than that. At the end in the books she becomes a mature young woman who knows her worth. She literally tells Scott that she's too good for him.

They had a great friendship in the comic- they were together so much Julie, Young Neil, and others like Scott thought they might be romantically attracted to each other in Volumes 3-6. They would always have fun hanging out together in parties, he would sneak her into bars etc. But it was more of a super fun brother sister dynamic that was nice to see, and they're just super close. It was implied he told her he was gay before anyone else, and he was the one who gave her the wake-up call that Scott ain't that great and cheating etc. Loved the added music dynamic the show added though, they already had so much fun chemistry and the music element added so much more to Knives's character and their relationship.
I find it frustrating that nobody has mentioned how cool her voice-acting was. I feel like the actress had the time of her life recording this. And it sips through the screen and sound.

I'm re-reading the comics right now, they're good (better than a lot of people give them credit honestly) but they're definitely a product of the mid-2000s. I think the ship has sailed for a completely faithful adaptation, if it got adaptated I think there would definitely still be changes.

It also makes a ton of sense for her character in the comics! It's pretty heavily implied throughout that a large part of why Knives liked Scott in the first place was because he introduced her to a music scene she had previously not known about; in the final chapter, she's still just watching them play, but rather than being enthusiastic, her response is a dubious 'you guys have so much potential!' It's pretty easy to read her as always having had the real ear for music, so it's nice that in this timeline she gets to do something with it.
I thought it was a way less uncomfortable version of the scene in book 4 where Knives and Kim, a minor and an adult respectively, make out! But I think I like this explanation way better! You do you, Knives! Show everybody that you're a strong, independent woman who don't need no man or… woman!

1:41 is probably my favorite scene in the whole anime. This moment marks a growth for Knives that she wouldn't have experienced with Scott if he was around at this time. She grows past her obsession with Scott and uses music as an outlet, first going from Scott's base to making her own sound with the piano and synth, which is represented by the synth sounds that are playing while she and Kim are playing. I just find the scene to be beautifully crafted.
Knives in this series is so good. She's just a little less developed than the comics version but I love her new arc of loving herself and her music after scott dies. I think my favourite scene of the show is her jamming out with Kim. It's so beautiful visually, sonically and thematically I just gush.
I do hope they do a s2 to develop her and Scott a bit better. The comics was a bit rough around the edges and there needed to be some things there but I do understand the sentiment.
Really loved how they just wear their movie costumes in the last episode for no reason whatsoever, especially Knives since her dyed hair is actually an important part to her character

This show led to some interesting pairings! I loved seeing characters like Knives and Stephen ACTUALLY interact for the first time Lucas and Gideon, Gideon and Julie, Todd and Wallace, that small bit with Roxie and Kim...I could go on.
Theyre actually besties in the comics too! They hang out a ton, and scott even thinks theyre together at one point (they arent, knives laughs at the accusations, stephen is gay). I was always bummed that their friendship wasnt shown in the movie, the show was so healing

I really enjoy how they did knives in this show. Like there’s more to her than just the Chinese high schooler who is obsessed with Scott. Like she seems a little more normal and chill and kinda have a more fleshed out character than in the movie
Honestly enjoyed the entire Steven and Knives dynamic in the show. This show completely whiplashed me with its plot considering that I was thinking it was gonna be some combination of the comics and movie.
One of the best things this anime did to improve the overall story: It gave the side characters more time to shine Like Knives, for instance, she got more time to speak and more involvement with the overall plot in the show. Given how she was in the film and the comics, while still having an important role, her involvement was lessened due to all the other side characters presented. That proves why a show is better for character development when you have a big cast of Characters that are all equally important to the story as a whole in some way. Another thing I loved is how the show presented more context on Ramona’s relationships with her exes and how they made her the central character of what many thought would be an animated recreation of the movie when this essentially became an Unofficial Sequel to the Film
As somebody who wasn't a fan of the original Scott Pilgrim, I genuinely loved what this anime did for her. Seeing her grow from Scott's death and find a passion for music that was all her own, growing closer to Steven who felt like a great neurotic mentor to her. She's such an adorable lil cinnamon roll, and I hope she makes it big on Broadway. Or at least, the Toronto equivalent to Broadway.
[● Knives really needed this. Finally she gets to actually grow up and find her own identity. Seeing her start indulging in her hobbies, strengthening bonds with new people (her dynamic with Stephen, getting along with Ramona), and overall being own her person. She gets to take the driver's seat for once, and I couldn't be happier!]
Her dynamic with Stephen was in the comic as well, I’m super glad they continued their bond here and giving her the music element- it works perfectly! Even though Knives got the closure in the last Volume discovering herself and refused Scott’s advances the music thing made her so much more unique.
@@Δ-Δ-Δ-Δ Volume 5, the second to last volume, ends with a cliffhanger with Ramona teleporting away leaving Scott no notes besides her goodbye words telling him it was fun(Scott assumes she went back to Gideon but she didn't in the comic) So Scott is super depressed over her leaving for several months in Volume 6. Wallace, just like the show, gives questionable advice to the dumb brained Scott, telling him he should casually sleep with people. So Scott idiotically and very awkwardly tries asking each of his exes for a casual fling. Knives spent Volumes 2-4 being kinda just a comedic side character who is obsessed with Scott, but when Scott goes to her in Volume 6 she has finally (through events of Volume 5) gotten over him and rejects him kindly, understanding he's not the ideal she envisioned and in a bad spot. Although she didn't mind a last minute make out with him before she left for university, which was a comedic page of them recoiling from the kiss with giant text on the page that said "BUT IT WAS HORRIBLE FOR EVERYONE. AND THAT INCLUDES YOU" Extra info on the Knives and Stephen friendship in the comics- Knives is closest to Stephen out of anyone in the entire series, from like Volume 3-6 she's hanging out and laughing with Stephen in most of her background appearances and he's the one who invites and sneaks her into parties and bars. He's also the one who broke the news to her in Volume 5 that it's not Ramona's meddling that stole Scott, Scott is just crappy. Both Julie and Young Neil suspect that they might have mutual romantic attraction in earlier volumes because they chill together so much, but Knives laughs that off in her early Volume 6 appearance that of course not- which why she found it so funny is later revealed at the end of the volume that Stephen is gay and dating another guy whose name I don't remember(He was a background character that had a couple blunt and dry comedic lines).

Theyre actually besties in the comics too! They hang out a ton, and scott even thinks theyre together at one point (they arent, knives laughs at the accusations, stephen is gay). I was always bummed that their friendship wasnt shown in the movie, the show was so healing
Steven stepping up as a good positive supportive older friend/mentor makes me so happy.
I love knives’s character in this much more than the live action, she actually has her own personality beyond just being ‘Scott’s crazy ex’

I love her getting to have her own discovery of love and moving on from Scott but man did she deserve more screen time. It likely would have clashed a little with the story they were telling about Ramona and how much she wouldn’t give up on Scott but still. That little bit where she gets to tell Scott how she’s grown is so sweet but we only got to see snippets of her development! I’d gladly take a whole episode or OVA dedicated to the adventures of Knives and Stephen

I really enjoy how they did knives in this show. Like there’s more to her than just the Chinese high schooler who is obsessed with Scott. Like she seems a little more normal and chill and kinda have a more fleshed out character than in the movie

Honestly enjoyed the entire Steven and Knives dynamic in the show.
This show completely whiplashed me with its plot considering that I was thinking it was gonna be some combination of the comics and movie.
One of the best things this anime did to improve the overall story: It gave the side characters more time to shine
Like Knives, for instance, she got more time to speak and more involvement with the overall plot in the show. Given how she was in the film and the comics, while still having an important role, her involvement was lessened due to all the other side characters presented.
That proves why a show is better for character development when you have a big cast of Characters that are all equally important to the story as a whole in some way.
Another thing I loved is how the show presented more context on Ramona’s relationships with her exes and how they made her the central character of what many thought would be an animated recreation of the movie when this essentially became an Unofficial Sequel to the Film
That did well but the comics do a lot more other things better

As somebody who wasn't a fan of the original Scott Pilgrim, I genuinely loved what this anime did for her. Seeing her grow from Scott's death and find a passion for music that was all her own, growing closer to Steven who felt like a great neurotic mentor to her. She's such an adorable lil cinnamon roll, and I hope she makes it big on Broadway. Or at least, the Toronto equivalent to Broadway.
She's also an adorable mouse with the cutest character. Knives is soooo cute

Knives is the kind of character that might get be a main target for merchandising schemes.
The animation is so great and this still captured the vibe of the comics.

Her dynamic with Stephen was in the comic as well, I’m super glad they continued their bond here and giving her the music element- it works perfectly! Even though Knives got the closure in the last Volume discovering herself and refused Scott’s advances the music thing made her so much more unique.

@@Δ-Δ-Δ-Δ Volume 5, the second to last volume, ends with a cliffhanger with Ramona teleporting away leaving Scott no notes besides her goodbye words telling him it was fun(Scott assumes she went back to Gideon but she didn't in the comic)
So Scott is super depressed over her leaving for several months in Volume 6. Wallace, just like the show, gives questionable advice to the dumb brained Scott, telling him he should casually sleep with people. So Scott idiotically and very awkwardly tries asking each of his exes for a casual fling.
Knives spent Volumes 2-4 being kinda just a comedic side character who is obsessed with Scott, but when Scott goes to her in Volume 6 she has finally (through events of Volume 5) gotten over him and rejects him kindly, understanding he's not the ideal she envisioned and in a bad spot. Although she didn't mind a last minute make out with him before she left for university, which was a comedic page of them recoiling from the kiss with giant text on the page that said "BUT IT WAS HORRIBLE FOR EVERYONE. AND THAT INCLUDES YOU"
Extra info on the Knives and Stephen friendship in the comics- Knives is closest to Stephen out of anyone in the entire series, from like Volume 3-6 she's hanging out and laughing with Stephen in most of her background appearances and he's the one who invites and sneaks her into parties and bars. He's also the one who broke the news to her in Volume 5 that it's not Ramona's meddling that stole Scott, Scott is just crappy. Both Julie and Young Neil suspect that they might have mutual romantic attraction in earlier volumes because they chill together so much, but Knives laughs that off in her early Volume 6 appearance that of course not- which why she found it so funny is later revealed at the end of the volume that Stephen is gay and dating another guy whose name I don't remember(He was a background character that had a couple blunt and dry comedic lines).
Id love a Season 2. I know it doesn't make much sense but I could watch these characters interact in the mose mundane ways and still be entertained.
Maybe another AU? Maybe they *actually* use the subspace highway as a crazy cross-world thing

I think her development in the comics is decent. It's a different path since she has to struggle a lot more with moving on (like she says in the anime, Scott being dead allowed her to self-reflect much faster).

Because she had more time away from Scott doing things for herself, the obsession most likely died. That along with figuring out on her own what Scott did.
