The thing that hit me The most is how in the first 11 episodes when they are in the distortion you have this ending in the "studio recording", well recorded and made perfect. In the last episode, when they come back to the real world, you find this acoustic version, just like it is, really "human"
It really matches the visual style change. The rest of the show is so vivid and bright, in a way that almost hurts to look at, and then they come home and everything is muted looking
Nagara lost his connection with Nozomi, and Mizuho lost her connection with Rajdhani. It's very sad, but as Nagara said in the end, there's still a long way to go. Edit: Also it's good seeing Yamabiko finally reunited with his friend.
Sonny Boy, while strictly following the show not tell rule (even regarding exposition) managed to be the most captivating anime this year has to offer.... madhouse yet again reminds us why they are the studio we love. Sonny Boy is beautiful both in story and presentation and brings just a hint of nostalgia to a completly self contained work of art. It is at times surreal, at times dark, at times sad and infinitely interesting.
lol look at the Western reviewers bashing it for not "meeting them halfway though". I'm just glad the Japanese market still supports niche works like this. It'd be impossible in America.
@@damiester1 The people that didn't like this show are just close-minded. They need the same linear story framework with the same few genres to be able to enjoy shows. They are free to like what they want, but I do think they are missing out on a bunch of gems like Sonny Boy.

Agreed it was a bit sad. This whole time we wanted Nagara to be the Boy that the Girl meets (THATS WHEN BOY MEETS GIRL from the song) but as long as the light is there and they have life, anything is possible...also Nagara's development is the high point of the ep, proving that he is not the same person as before the drift
they are only in highschool, he has alot more to go through, seeing him interact with nozomi at the end probably is just the start, its just sad that we wont be able to see the rest. Hope they release an OVA for the people left behind
I realized something about this anime after watching it with different people, first of all its a sad anime but it makes people who are at rock bottom of their live feels somewhat happy and hopefull at the end of this anime, people who are happy with their live on the other hand feels sad at the end of this anime.
I might forget about this anime one day but this version of the song will always stuck in my heart, this feeling, will always reminded me of this anime.

This anime saved my life. Like I'm not even joking. I was extremely close to committing suicide before the final episode premiered. I had loved the show so far, it was everything I had hoped for, but personal problems almost drove me to death. Then came this final episode. It showed me how these two can find not only a new beginning from where they left off, but can use the experiences to better themselves. If they can emerge from this difficult, saddening, scathing journey with a smile, so can I. Nagara's final line of dialogue needs to be heard around the world. "Our lives are only beginning. What lies ahead will take just a little bit longer." They should be showing this show in high school classes around the globe, as I think it can save other lives too. Remember, whenever someone says to you "it's just a movie" "it's just a book", tell them no. It is never just a movie. Art changes the world. For better or worse. But Sonny Boy is for the better.
This anime deserves a bit more attention, I remark it as a great Summer anime. Even though the plot is a bit confusing and hard to follow, once you take everything in it all feels great, and the artstyle fits it really well, they went with a Hiroshi Nagai styled artwork which really brings off a summer vibe.
He's really good at expressing raw emotions with his voice. His name is Kazunobu Mineta, from Going Steady and Ging Nang Boyz. 人間 from the album DOOR is a good example of a song where he similarily sings his goddamn heart out like here. Intensity increases as the song goes on.
This ending felt so satisfying but at the same time heart aching. I didn't expect that only the 2 of them would comeback in this world, considering that there are so many students at the start from those dream-like worlds. Still, I'm glad I watched this show from start to finish. Every episode was a mystery but interesting to know the truth behind it at the end.
I'm here because I literally just finished this anime. Really moved me and was so mesmerizing when Nagara and Mizuho were making their way back to their world✨️👏🏾

what I love about SonnyBoy is how you can keep finding different answers for each episode and still in the end, together, they all have this collective story/ meaning. Its also just told in a captivating way and songs add a nice little bow on top by adding those heart felt emotions we felt at the end in music especially the acoustic version. This is probably in my top five

this may sound like im whoring internet points but idc, i just want to share my experience with the show. After a harsh year at university, pretty far from my comfort zone (basically my hometown, family, friends, etc.), i got diagnosed with a severe anxious depressive disorder. It was pretty predictable for me since i started behaving extremely apathetic, skipping classes and wasting 1 entire month in my bedroom laying on the floor, eating microwaved pizzas, instant ramen, binge watching anime and at the edge of suffocating myself with a tank of helium gas to end my life, but in that extremely dark atmosphere i saw this weird anime coming out in summer during the finals and after watching it i said "wow, this looks amazing". When i saw Nagara in the first few episodes i saw my reflection in him and it felt kinda bad, first of all because watching him being such a nihilistic, stoicist dick towards everything and his surroundings caring for him made me realize that there were people that loved me, despite being hundreds of kilometers away, despite "being an academic failure", despite showing them absolutely nothing but apathy or even hate, they still cared about me. Fast forward a few weeks later and after my parents sent me to the psychiatrist and starting the treatment i was at rock bottom, i was pale due to lack of sunlight, kinda fat for lack of exercise, the meds were just making the situation worse, appart from creating myself a burden about it. Literally Sonny Boy was a breath of fresh air for me, my coping mechanism. After a week from that i started progressing, the medication didnt make me feel worse, still had the habit of laying on the floor while contemplating the nothingness of my bedroom's ceiling and when i saw Nagara crying, saying that he wanted to go back home too, it broke me. I was trying my best but i couldnt do anything, i wasnt in conditions to do it, but suddenly a switch flipped and I came to a critical realization in my development: I cannot change the world to my will, but i can modify my reaction to it. There was no external problem from the beginning,and the ones that kind of happened, were just twisted interpretations that my mind made in a lack of serotonin, dopamine and all the happy chemical cocktail. And so my redemption began, kind of in parallel with Nagara. Watching his personal development and comparing it with mine made me pretty happy, i started doing useful stuff, being in a better mood, all of it being helped by the medication. I started to feel genuine happiness for the first time in literally years. When episode 11 came, i was very happy because i loved how the show was going and couldnt wait to see the resolution, but at the same time i was a bit sad because all this journey was coming to an end. I loved everything about that episode but it broke me, it was the preparation for a very sad farewell, one that ive been waiting since i started watching it but i wasnt prepared for it. Episode 12 came. I couldnt wait to come back from classes to watch it. My house was empty, the moment was perfect, i put my headsets and clicked play. Its a masterpiece, from the visuals, to the ost and the amazing storytelling. But then, this song came, hearing Nagara's last words, and i cried. Im not an emotional type of person, but this felt too close home, also the fact that the only thing i could find looking for shounen shoujo in youtube shortly after the release of the preview, were the cropped up ending of the first episode and a very low quality recording of a spanish guitar with the same soul crushing vocals (i cannot find the video at the moment but it was a still black image with some japanese characters in white and like 10 views EDIT: HERE IT IS OMG th-cam.com/video/HneosvjGwvk/w-d-xo.html). It was too much for me to handle. I felt i was being guided by Nagara, Nozomi, Mizuho and Rajhdani; like that little bird at the end that Nozomi decided to take care until it can fly. Like Nagara himself, after being taken care of by Nozomi. In conclusion, this show is an amazing, cathartic experience and it became my favorite anime of all time (i have watched +200 animes so i have a pretty wide scope xddd) and if you are in your 20s and feel like a failure, please dont. As Nagara said: "our lifes just started, what awaits us in the future will take a little bit of time to come". Keep your head up, your life is worth living update edit: 2 days ago, according to my past plans, was the day i was going to kill myself, yet here i am and to be honest it feels nice. My problems haven't disappeared for good and i think they aren't going anywhere in the medium term but I've grown to live with them and not being bothered by them that much; it's not that good of a solution (it isn't one in fact) but slowly i'm beginning to embrace life a bit more and find my "place in the world". It sounds cheesy af but i don't have words to describe it much better and idk that means that im more invested into my subjects and looking more into possibilities for my future now that my og plans didn't succeed, luckily. Also rewatched Sonny Boy again in summer, trying to match the week days and stuff like that to relive the experience as much as possible and it's still a masterpiece. If a friend of yours didn't like it and is not being reasonable about it show this text to them and they'll perhaps understand its purpose and meaning. Appart from that, since recently i've been diagnosed with asperger i was advised to go to a therapist who is specialized in people with high functioning autism and i've been without a psychologist since may '22. Also i developed schizoid personality disorder, or that is what my psychiatrist told me, and that would explain my need for complete isolation, but i wont bite idk just being around people is and has been a really mentally draining thing to do, and somehow developed a really fucked up emotional dependency for a friend but i succesfully have overcame it quite some time ago (lasted around 2 months give or take). Overall experience 7/10 i did some major improvements regarding my life and stress management and shit. FORGOT TO SAY IT AND PERHAPS SOME PEOPLE NEED TO LISTEN TO THIS DESPITE NOT BEING PART OF THEIR AGENDA OR WHATEVER There's a really stark difference between having a bad moment and depression and there's a line, it's not about gatekeeping mental diseases its about not getting it mixed up. Bad moments come and go with an adequate response and dont exactly require therapy, but you have to be honest with yourself, its ok to have bad moments but you dont have to make your personality around them. I say this bc since i started therapy for my problems, some friends started going to a psychologist bc they were and i quote "feeling a bit down"
Bruh this anime was amazing, I went on low expectations because the person who recommended me told me that I might feel bored in First half but I got interested in this anime from the start.

nagara and mizuho were robbed of something they can never get back. if i was in charge of writing a sequel i would make the story about them going on a quest to find the principal and kick him square in the nuts
I think through the entire show, I was sitting and watching with an apathetic look on my face, not unlike Nagara. I was mostly frustrated at the show's bizarre way of telling its story, and my mind was so completely occupied with trying to figure out what any of this means. But when I heard this song, specifically this acoustic version, I just started crying. I was balling my eyes out. I had never cried like that in a really really long time. And I hate shows like these. I prefer a more straightforward narrative to follow, but my god the emotions in and from this show couldn't be more real.
Nagara and Mizuho are the only survivors of the drift that happened two years ago . That's they are the ones who remembers what happen also if they say that there's drifting happen they will be like crazy but im curious if in that time in the ending are they graduating? Or the drifting will start all over again ? Did they go in to the past or to the future ? Or rather the present time ?

It sounds cheesy af but i don't have words to describe it much better and idk that means that im more invested into my subjects and looking more into possibilities for my future now that my og plans didn't succeed, luckily. Also rewatched Sonny Boy again in summer, trying to match the week days and stuff like that to relive the experience as much as possible and it's still a masterpiece. If a friend of yours didn't like it and is not being reasonable about it show this text to them and they'll perhaps understand its purpose and meaning. Appart from that, since recently i've been diagnosed with asperger i was advised to go to a therapist who is specialized in people with high functioning autism and i've been without a psychologist since may '22. Also i developed schizoid personality disorder, or that is what my psychiatrist told me, and that would explain my need for complete isolation, but i wont bite idk just being around people is and has been a really mentally draining thing to do, and somehow developed a really fucked up emotional dependency for a friend but i succesfully have overcame it quite some time ago (lasted around 2 months give or take). Overall experience 7/10 i did some major improvements regarding my life and stress management and shit. FORGOT TO SAY IT AND PERHAPS SOME PEOPLE NEED TO LISTEN TO THIS DESPITE NOT BEING PART OF THEIR AGENDA OR WHATEVER There's a really stark difference between having a bad moment and depression and there's a line, it's not about gatekeeping mental diseases its about not getting it mixed up. Bad moments come and go with an adequate response and dont exactly require therapy, but you have to be honest with yourself, its ok to have bad moments but you dont have to make your personality around them. I say this bc since i started therapy for my problems, some friends started going to a psychologist bc they were and i quote "feeling a bit down"

Bruh this anime was amazing, I went on low expectations because the person who recommended me told me that I might feel bored in First half but I got interested in this anime from the start.

そんなようなことを最終話で主人公が言うもんだから見終わったあとの虚無感とか喪失感がとんでもなかったです。
自分も学生で辛いことも含めて色んな体験をするけど、そんなのは人生において大した割合じゃないんだと思えて楽になりました。けど、同時に今してる事の意味を見失いかけて切なくもなりました。
僕にとってSonny Boyはそんな作品でした。ずっと忘れることは無いアニメのひとつです。

I think through the entire show, I was sitting and watching with an apathetic look on my face, not unlike Nagara. I was mostly frustrated at the show's bizarre way of telling its story, and my mind was so completely occupied with trying to figure out what any of this means. But when I heard this song, specifically this acoustic version, I just started crying. I was balling my eyes out. I had never cried like that in a really really long time. And I hate shows like these. I prefer a more straightforward narrative to follow, but my god the emotions in and from this show couldn't be more real.
