The day before, 11th October, the 7th Queen's brigaded with the 8th East Surrey's were also moving up for the attack. Their war diary said that at 5pm Lt CE Swindell and 5 other ranks were killed. One of those killed was a Farnham man, G/1705 Sgt Walter Chitty. He was the son of Henry and Roda Chitty, who in 1911 lived at 62 East Street. He had worked as a nurseryman's clerk. His early number marks him out as a Kitchener volunteer. Walter's body was lost and he is commemorated at Tyne Cot. His photo is published in "Farnham Lads on the Somme".

Many thanks for the comment Maurice. Walter is commemorated on our Surrey in the Great War website (www.surreyinthegreatwar.org.uk/person/117173) along with many other East and West Surrey's and Surrey people in other regiments, the Navy, Royal Flying Corps/RAF, VADs and civilians. He is also mentioned in a number of First World War newspapers which have been indexed as part of the Surrey in the Great War project (search Chitty, Walter to find the list). If you have any information to add to the Surrey in the Great War records please contact the project team.
