  • For the past year I've been working with Binary Bicycles to develop my dream hardtail, the Binary Maniak. There are a handful of changes we'll be implementing between this prototype and the final model. Pre-orders are open for the next 45 days for those who are interested in this bike. Reserve yours today. Stay tuned as I share more about the prototype including a first look vid later this week. Learn more about this bike and pre-order yours here: binarybicycles...

Reminder: this is a prototype and there will be some significant changes between my.prototype and the final version. The final version won't have such a swoopy top tube, it'll have a straighter seat tube, and a few other tweaks. It's been over a year in development and I'm thrilled to be able to show you more today.
Preorders for the first batch close on Feb 11, so if you want one, order before then.

Congratulations! There's something so granular about putting together a nice metal hardtail with parts that you know and understand and riding it on a trail you also know and understand. I did this most recently with my new Stanton Slackline and, for someone with years on 80s and 90s hardtails, it really distills everything we've learned about balancing stoutness and suppleness. I know I am probably slower on my hardtail but the feel of letting the bike dance through the bends is irreplaceable.

I did not expect it to be as finished as it seems to be at this point, so I'm impressed. Personally I love that this is more like a multitool than most bikes, because I feel that most people will relate more to something that can do more than one thing. My bike came with 200mm front and 180mm rear with the new Deore 4-pots. I swapped forks and now run a 180 on the front, which still works OK on my local trails, but they aren't super steep. These brakes are pretty good, but I really like the idea of trying cable-actuated. I might have to grab a set of Klampers one day!

Hey, for the rack mount thing: They make seat post clamps with rack mounts on them. So you could, alternately have a more standard rack mounting point on the rear drop-out, and then, when and if you want to put a rack on the thing, swap to the seat post clamp with the rack mount on it, and you could install many standard racks on it (Boost spacing and plus spacing may not work for some racks, I suppose). I am no bike designer, but this should reduce strain on the seat stays and/or increase compliance.
    Also, nice lines. Well done.

    • @hardtailparty

Just throwing thoughts in as I watch. I completely agree on the wheel upgrade thing. People will spend all sorts of money to lighten their bikes, but it won't make all that much difference unless they lose weight on the wheels and tires. You can take 2 pounds off of a frame and you will hardly notice it. But take 1/2 pound from the wheels and the bike will feel a ton snappier and quicker.....given that you don't loose stiffness.
So yeah, those watching, take his advice on putting more money into your wheels than anything else.

Nice work getting all those features in one bike! Interested to hear how it rides. It is very hard to find a hardtail bike with all features you want. Beautiful! Thank the manufacturer for keeping the cable routing on the outside and not compromising the frame by putting them in internally. Internal cable routing in my opinion is pure garbage. I have both a full titanium and 7005 aluminum alloy frame and they are both bullet proof and amazing. Both are the best material for a frame on the face of this planet! Nice ride!

Beautiful aesthetics, absolutely amazing looking lines. Steve, you really have "clicked all the boxes" especially for those of us that can’t stand the cookie cutter XC hardtail we see from most frame builders or the over forked over slacked hardtail designs from some of companies that really just think of a hardtail as a frame for those that can't afford their full suspension bikes.
For reference I'm 5'6" and 125mm is the longest dropper that I have ever been able fit on my small Esker Japhy. Maybe the medium can run a 150 dropper but 170 would be amazing.
My rotors are 160mm Shimano Ice Tech and all my brakes are the 4 piston XT and XTR's. Probably small rotors for some but I'm 155lbs and riding hardtails only and on more tech and not so much high speed park like trails.

What a cool experience. I am pretty particular about my bikes and I see a frame I like but then it will have a low stack or a long seat tube or a seat tube gusset that won’t allow a nice long dropper post which just kills it for me. I think you should test the roost bars on this build as well. Little "we are one" vs "roost" mini review. Also... Ti overload goodness!

First thing I noticed was the seat tube! 😂 I knew you wouldn't like that. Looks like it should be fun though. I'm sure you already know how it rides by now. Looking forward to the ride review! 🤘🏻

Yeah, there's often small disconnects between a drawing and the actual metal frame.

Dang I knew the Klampers are cable disc kings but I didn't know they're good for aggro riding as well! Also good job on the chainstays, Santa Cruz only managed a 2.4 clearance with 415mm stays on the Chameleon 7. Maybe trying dropped driveside stays is worth it if you really want the clearance for 3 inch tyres on a backend that short

I run a 180mm up front and a 160mm out back (ice tech) with Shimano 4-piston brakes on my 29er xc hardtail with a total weight (me+gear+bike) of around 200 pounds.

That frame looks amazing! The other thing I am very curious about is the Gulo wheel. Looking forward to seeing how everything goes!
