The attention to detail and love that went into both the design and assembly of the Maniak is second to none. And just so fun to ride. Hands down, my favorite bike I've ever owned.
Man, if they made their fat bike look (and have all the features) like your Binary Maniak, I’d be tempted to replace my Blizzard frame! As I’ve got a 29 setup on 150/197 hubs already. This thing is beyond cool, though, love all the thoughtful details that we’ve been watching you curate over the years! Edit: Who am I kidding - I wouldn’t even be tempted. Putting my money where my mouth is I would 100% dump my wallet out if they made a maniak fat 197.
I wish I could justify this bike, but it’s very similar to my custom steel frame. N+1 starts to breakdown once you’re past 7 bikes, especially when you’re married.
That's a damn good looking and functional frame Steve!! Great job. You look and sound like a proud new Papa, THAT'S what this is all about friends, pride and passion in what we Love..
When I saw this my heart sank a bit b/c I thought this was a newer version of my Maniak I bought last October. But I checked and do have this version, whew! Love the bike BTW!
Congrats on seeing your creation to fruition and congrats on your move and continued recovery! And I say continued because I am there, too, doing so much better and feeling stronger every day, like the Chicago son, one of the best of the '70s. And I applaud your choice of titanium. A serious rider deserves a serious ride and best of all, it's a Cadillac or something luxe like that. 😀
I have a hardtail with ~similar~ geometry and love it more than I expected. The Maniak turns up the dial just a little- the fact that it fits 29+ with ease is greatly appealing. If I ever get a ti bike it'll be one of these!
I hope one day I can purchase this frame to build up into my dream bike. I absolutely love my 27.5 plus HT, I was instantly sold on plus size tires after test riding several HT's. I am into more technical trails, slow speed moves, exposure, and just nice handcut singletrack. I have no desire to ride flow and jump lines like what has become the focus of the majority of new trail systems. I am content with spending hours on good technical trails, even if it involves miles of hike a bike sections. Happy for your improved version of the Binary Maniak. Looking forward to the next chapter of your and your family's life in Bentonville. I hope to see you one of these days when I visit the area, I am less than two hours away.
For the type of riding you describe (also my favorite type of riding) plus tires are the way to go! I hope you get a chance to ride a maniak sometime. Keep an eye on my instagram for bentonville meetup rides. I have one this week.
Love the updates. Super dialed frame. I’m not sure it’s possible with titanium, but I love what Pivot does with their removable cover on the bottom of the down tube so you can easily route the dropper housing up the seat tube.
There's actually a trick to routing the dropper on this in case you need to put one back in and you don't have something to pull it through with. If you feed it from the front opening with a weighted string, or park tool internal cable guide tool, you can rhen turn the frame upside down in the stand and have gravity feed it into the seat tube. Pretty easy, but not apparent right off the bat.
Cool updates Steve - thanks for sharing! Great sale they have going... Got me thinking. I love my RSD MC Ti frame, but may need to sell it so I can upgrade to the Maniak!
You gotta get one of these as they are such awesome bikes. Binary service and follow ups after the purchase of the frame was very professional , something that you don’t see much these days. Steve the designer and Binary the builder is a match made in heaven. Thank you😊
Thank you Paul. It's nice to hear other people sharing this too, otherwise it may sound like a huge sales pitch from me. But I am so proud of this bike, it truly is special
Awesome bike Steve. Just thought I’d let you know that your videos have helped me in every hardtail choice. Currently own a Niner SIR9, Kona Honzo ESD and a Canfield nimble 9. All chosen after watching your videos. Thanks again and hoping to see you on the new Binary soon!
Some cool details on that frame. Very nice. Never had a chance to try a titanium bike. Something I wish I could have done. Very nice explanation of bike geo and why they matter.
I've had my v1.5 since March this year. Built it up single speed with standard 29 x 2.4-ish tires. I can confirm that Steve isn't exaggerating when he talks about the ride qualities of this frame, or of the company and their customer service.
You are correct, you can enjoy MTB on almost any bike these days. However, the handling and safety of every bike isn't equal. The wrong tool for the job can often lead to injury if one isn't careful. However, after riding 100+ hardtails, I've found that many bikes feel like they have a personality and a soul. Getting a bike that resonates with you can be very exciting. Most people haven't ridden a truly great hardtail, and the difference is massive. If you're shopping for a new bike, i recommend getting something that really excites you and works with your favorite parts of MTB. For some people, that's getting the most affordbale frame they can. For others, it's searching for that special one that sparks joy when riding it. I think that's why so many people get bored with FS and rekindle their love for riding with a hardtail.
@@user-yru0fit1 can you imagine just the ride. emotional. Remember when we all first started , how fun it was, really. We just called it cycling or biking!!period!! Put your trust and everything in yourself!!
Beautiful frame! It’s on my holiday list. I do have a Trek Stache, with the Line Pro 40 wheels and an XR2 in back, and the chainstay is currently 408mm with a few mm of room left to go in. Also, with the current v3 On One dropper i can fit a 180mm post in the size medium Stache.
Rigid fork and budget eight speed drivetrain - sounds like Bentonville is knocking some sense into you! I think you'll be impressed by the Acoloyte, maybe not the shifter if you got the older bulky one. I've ridden plenty in the Appalachians without suspension, works just fine if you know when to send and when to chill, so I'd imagine you'll be fine in Arkansas.
Nice to make minor tweaks to improve on a great rig. Still love mine, but the dropper cable was a royal pain to get in there, and 3.0's don't fit. They sorta do, but I had too much tire rub while riding. Went down to 2.8's and solved that problem. Still plenty soft enough and I now ride a faster rolling tire. So it was a win win for me.
If you ever need to run a dropper cable again, insert a weighted string in the front port, then turn the bike upside down and let gravity pull it through the hole in the bb shell/seat tube. Still a pain, but a little easier.
Hey buddy you do a fantastic job and we really enjoy your content.. Any chance of reviewing the merida bigtrail for us .. Your insight would go along way for us down in Australia
Ebikes are a great tool as well. They're kind of on opposite ends of the spectrum. Ebikes have extra sensors, wires, controls, electronics, etc. and hardtails like this have none of that. Both are awesome for completely different reasons. I have both and ride both. This is a really special hardtail.
Awesome frame. I love the external routing for the rear derailleur, with little or no loop at rear, and no dips where water can accumulate and cause corrosion and friction or freeze in winter. I would like a gusset between the seat and down tube that could reduce the bend of the dropper cable, but it would increase price further. I assume the gusset to the bottom bracket is needed for stiffness in that area?
I was initially concerned about the dropper angle, but it turns out to be less sharp if an angle than most hardtails. A gusset in front would mean a water bottle wouldnt fit on the seat tube. The gusset at the back is to stiffen the bb area under pedaling. I'm not sure if it's 100% necessary, but we wanted a stiff bb area.
I love mine!! It was a loong road in the making, but it is one sweet bike! A couple of PSA's: OneUp droppers dont fit, they are undersized for this frame! Also, Maxxis DHR 29x3.0's on Enve 640's do not clear. They rub fer sure. XR4's in the back are good to go 👍😎
Is yours a v1 or 1.5? I find that dropper length will vary depending on your inseam. In order to help future purchasers, what frame size are you running? What's your inseam without shoes on? Which length one up didn't work for you? Oneup has a super short stack (shortest in the industry), so you have to run them about 20mm taller to have the same saddle height as other brands. I assume you're saying you didnt have enough seat post insertion on your oneup for your desired saddle height. Is that what you're saying?
@@hardtailparty Sorry, I was half-asleep when I commented. The length of the seat post is fine. The OneUp V3 post's diameter is too small. It won't stay up. It sinks in the frame no matter how much fiber grip, or how many seat collar gyrations you do. The diameter of the post is under-sized. I put a Fox Transfer in per Binary's reccomendation, and of course it works great. Unfortunately the OneUp experience happened first 🤷♂️. I have version 1.5.
It sounds like your oneup might have a 30.9 diameter post. This bike has a 31.6 seat tube. So you either need a 31.6 seat tube or a $10 shim to fit your oneup. I always opt for 31.6 seat tubes on my signature bikes so people can re-use their existing droppers. If they have a 30.9 they want to transfer over, just add a problem solvers shim.
@@hardtailparty No, actually the post is undersized like I said. I ordered the correct 31.6mm post. I hadn't heard of the shim as an option though, I will look that up and keep it in mind for when I get another bike that needs a dropper. Thanks! The Fox Transfer is doing good work on my Maniak so I'll keep rockin it.
Another great video! You mentioned how the Maniak 1.5 has skinnier seat stays. Do you have charts of various tubing vendors’ tubing specs and corresponding degrees of deflection/ moduli of elasticity for comparison for finer tuning tubing choices for custom bikes?
I don't think the seatstays are any thinner than the 1.0. it's something we've wanted from the beginning. Tubing specs from model to model is pretty guarded information in the industry. A huge part of what makes great bikes ride great is the tubing spec. A lot of people copy others' geo, but it's really hard to copy the ride feel and tubing. Im ok with companies keeping this a secret, it allows us to reward the original designers more than copy their work.
Whoops, I just re-read your original question and realized I misunderstood. I don't work directly with the tubing manufacturers but I'm sure those charts exist. Or at the very least, they could consult on which tubing they'd recommend for a given application. In the case of the Maniak, I rely on Binary's much more extensive experience with tubing profiles and specs, and they work closely with the factories on this. I describe my goals and intentions for the tide feel, provide my thoughts on tubing placement and rough diameter, and they make the design decisions to select the proper tube for it. Moduli of elasticity is way above my knowledge.
Steve, this bike looks amazing. Thank you for advocating on behalf of the endangered 29x3 platform. This is my favorite wheel size by far. Can you confirm if you can run a rigid fork? Have you done this yet for bikepacking? If so what fork? Thanks!!
It absolutely can run a rigid fork, just make sure it's suspension corrected with a tall atc that matches a 120mm suspension fork. It can fit quite a few. Ill have a video soon showing what Im using (an enve mtn fork)
Steve, Thanks for the update! If an option, I would love to purchase a fitting session riding this frame on 3 different wheel/tire size setups 27.5 mullet vs full 29er plus. My current hardtail is a 2018 stache 27.5”-2.6, front 29”-2.8 with a slack-R and 120 mm fork. Biggest complaint: dropper insertion limits!
I bought the 2020 Canfield Nimble 9 when it was released and after building it up emailed them a few of the problems they could improve for the next years model. Dropper post wouldn't insert far enough due to the seat post curve and cable routing was bad. Unfortunately I don't think they've changed anything other than the paint schemes since that point, which is a shame as otherwise it's a great bike.
that dropper post cable, is it just a gear cable with a tube guide fixed in the frame or do you still use an outer cable and thread that through the frame?
One thing I'm curious about is the lack of a non drive side brace between the seat and chain stays. I've heard of this being a failure point on frames without it before so was there a reason for excluding it? Ride quality or something?
Sounds great...cool that 29+ feets fine... I would like to see it with T47 bb shell instead of BSA. Cranks with 24 mm axles are still there, but not that common anymore and 30 mm axles I'd like to use with larger bb shells...
I initially wanted t47, but our design ended up working better with a traditional bsa. That is such a tight space, and everything is fighting for more room. If we didn't want such short chainstays, we could have gone with a bigger bb shell and even more tire clearance.
@@hardtailparty, I can imagine that it's not so obvious to squize everything together with your special seattube-downtube-joint, plus tire clearance and sliding dropouts...and technically you can't avoid compromises... I would also prefer desired chainstaylength over the bb shell 😉...anyway looks like a great bike 👍
@thegarageluthier , all hopes that I know currently have 30 mm aluminium axles, higher range race faces (turbine or highrr) also (they do have some 24 mm cranks, but from the lower price/quality range), shimano yes, but let's see for how long...
I see where you're coming from. Unfortunately, we would have had to raise the seat tube to pull that off, and I prioritized the shortest seat tube possible
What is the max chainring this frame can run? I have a trek stache but the 30 or 32 just isn't enough gears. Bike looks amazing and just jumped in front of the surly krampus for my next n+1 bike.
They have some similarities, but this one is WAY slacker than the sedona. With a +2* angleset they're fairly close to each other (only the Sedona doesnt have sliding dropouts... yet...)
Anyone riding one of these exclusively as a Single Speed? Looking at this and the Stanton Switcher9 in titanium, with the sliding dropout option. The steep seat tube angle on the Binary concerns me a little as a dedicated single speed. I already ride a custom steel 27.5 single speed, but I’m finally ready to move up to the wagon wheels.
I rode it as a singlespeed for a few months. I believe I have some videos of this somewhere on the channel... I'm usually not seated when singlespeeding (but I like steep seat angles anyway since most of Sedona's climbs are fairly ledgy and steep. Slacker seat angles just lift the front wheel, especially with a short cs
I've got a few videos on steel vs ti. Weight is one factor. Several reasons: 1) Binary only makes Ti bikes at the moment. 2) Steel bikes aren't much cheaper to produce for us in small batches. We're exploring the possibility of a steel maniak, but it won't be much cheaper. Honest question... What price point does a steel maniak need to be at to take it over ti?
@@hardtailparty - well tbh I wasn't even thinking price but rather thinking steel is more comfortable? I have a Ti all road/gravel frame and it is compliant but I think steel might be more plush?
@jasonhumphries6131 gotcha. Most steel frames are more compliant, but some companies have figured out how to make their ti bikes ride just as smooth if not smoother
why can't we tall people get the short seat stays?? i have ground down my Paragon sliders and can get close to these numbers on my Vassago, but then I saw this... i got so excited... 415mm!! and I ride 29x3.0... and then he says, "it grows in the larger sizes"... so, i am back to the fact that there is not a single 29+ bike on the market with 425 or shorter chainstays... if i am wrong, PLEASE let me know.. and, as always, thank you for doing what you do!
What size reach do you normally go for? The v1 maniak had 415mm stays in the big sizes, maybe you can track one down. They only really fit 2.8 rear though
@@hardtailparty truly thanks for the tip on the original... I like something close to 480 for reach... i am east coast and slow tech.. so i even like my heat tube angle at 67 or 68... but the short stays really help with tuight switchbacks and loose and gnarly climbs - which is why i ride! tanton Switchback Ti was too short in the reach dept... in the 18" long... Vassago is right there, but for the chainstays.. with the ground paragon inserts, the 29 x 3.0 fits, but rubs on out of the saddle climbing due to frame flex... so i am now cruising for a light, supple, very round and predicatble 2.8... I LOVE my WTB Ranger in 3.0, but they do not make a 2.8... it is wild what a difference one link, a half inch, makes on chainstays... party on!

Love my OG maniak 😊
It's a special bike
Steve, Thanks for the update! If an option, I would love to purchase a fitting session riding this frame on 3 different wheel/tire size setups 27.5 mullet vs full 29er plus. My current hardtail is a 2018 stache 27.5”-2.6, front 29”-2.8 with a slack-R and 120 mm fork. Biggest complaint: dropper insertion limits!
I'm not set up to do fitting sessions, sorry. I'm not sure Binary is either, but you're welcome to reach out to them.
@@heywood165 it surprises me how many hardtails have that problem
that dropper post cable, is it just a gear cable with a tube guide fixed in the frame or do you still use an outer cable and thread that through the frame?
@@ADVtheMISSIONARY it's a plastic cable just used to pull your housing through
Hey Steve, great to see your new maniak. But what I really need is that 3d printed? wera L wrench holder! Do you know where I could find that?
It's actually just a 2x4 that I drilled some holes in
@hardtailparty I might just steal that idea then and if you care share the 3d print file with you :)!
@parfumisme great idea, especially if you can make it hook on a pegboard
Ehm Every Shimano crank, hope cranks, race face cranks etc.. all come with 24mm???
@@hardtailparty, I can imagine that it's not so obvious to squize everything together with your special seattube-downtube-joint, plus tire clearance and sliding dropouts...and technically you can't avoid compromises... I would also prefer desired chainstaylength over the bb shell 😉...anyway looks like a great bike 👍
@thegarageluthier , all hopes that I know currently have 30 mm aluminium axles, higher range race faces (turbine or highrr) also (they do have some 24 mm cranks, but from the lower price/quality range), shimano yes, but let's see for how long...
I live in a dry climate, but I still haven't worn out a cheap dub bb.
Did they also correct the head tube angle issue that the V1.0 had?
@@nathanwhitmire3888 They verified that these are all 65". I haven't been able to measure mine yet.
Looks great Steve!
Gracias amigo
Sweet 🔥🔥🔥🔥👊👊👊👊👊
Lovely frame but being in the UK would want the seat tube slot facing forwards to help keep the dirt out.
@@nathanmiller5176 binary can get you the official answer. I only run 28-32 oval
Steve, the one on the site is the newer version or will be coming out later?
All bikes made after Jan 2024 (including the ones on the site) are 1.5s
Since the sliders are PMW are they able to use the sliders for 142x12?
I don't see why they wouldn't. You'll want to double-check with Binary on that though.
Are the mounts on the seat stays the same spacing and thread as bottle cage mounts?
The sure are! We wanted to open up mounting possibilities so we tried to keep it standard
@@hardtailparty Thats awesome. You guys literally thought of everything.
Thanks so much. Now i just need to find a rear rack solution
So hard to choose between going all out with this or getting the Stanton Sedona!
They have some similarities, but this one is WAY slacker than the sedona. With a +2* angleset they're fairly close to each other (only the Sedona doesnt have sliding dropouts... yet...)
@hardtailparty OH man! Sliding dropouts on the Sedona would be amazing!
Dan says it's a possibility. He's experimenting with a design right now
Great looking frame. Which rim do you use for the 29” XR2s?
I have a few different wheels. I highlight them on big brain party with my recent 20 wheel comparison video. These wre gtl rims
Maybe I'll afford one some day :)
What are all those toolboxes above you in the beginning?!
See my shop tour video. Ill be releasing a new shop tour at this new shop soon
Might need to sell my why wayward.
Does it hallow you to ride a 27.5" fully tuck forward?
See video
Plus bikes are so much fun....it is sad the industry is going away from it.
How would you say it compares to a Lynskey Livewire 27.5+ ?
I do my bike comparisons over on patreon as part of my consultation service. I will say, 29+ and 27.5+ ride noticeably different
Slacker seat angles just lift the front wheel, especially with a short cs
why Ti over Steel? Weight only or something else?
Are they going to make this bike out of steel?
Unsure. A lot of people have been requesting it. It probably won't be tons cheaper if they do.
why can't we tall people get the short seat stays?? i have ground down my Paragon sliders and can get close to these numbers on my Vassago, but then I saw this... i got so excited... 415mm!! and I ride 29x3.0... and then he says, "it grows in the larger sizes"... so, i am back to the fact that there is not a single 29+ bike on the market with 425 or shorter chainstays... if i am wrong, PLEASE let me know..
and, as always, thank you for doing what you do!
I LOVE my WTB Ranger in 3.0, but they do not make a 2.8...
it is wild what a difference one link, a half inch, makes on chainstays...
party on!
It truly is wild, 10mm on a chainstay is a nig difference.
My $10K Binary Maniak build got stolen last week. Maybe this 1.5 will make me feel better about it.
Nooooo! So sorry to hear that. I hope homeowners or renters or car insurance reimburses you!
There's only one problem, how am I going to tell my kids that Santa brought me a new bike but they aren't getting anything for Christmas?
The struggle is real
So beautiful, didn't even want to look how many arms and legs it cost..
maybe in 20 years..
Take a look, it's very affordable for Ti. There arent many ti frames that are more affordable, especially with these features.
@@hardtailparty You're right.. very affordable... if one isn't enslaved... msrp of my 2007 Cowan DS frame I got on clearance 2 years later.
