I'm glad you brought up the early French influence here. The Peoria area has a long history and has had a surprising amount of influence on American culture over the years. I've never been there, but I've always been curious about it, as the references are everywhere in older popular culture. For many years, Peoria was a popular test market for new products, and in the earlier part of the 20th century, it had a strong connection to vaudeville. The expression "Will it play in Peoria?" probably originated in vaudeville. When listening to Fibber McGee & Molly, a very popular and excellent radio comedy from the 1930s-1950s, I have noticed that there are occasional references to Peoria. The stars of the show certainly performed there during their vaudeville days. Overall, it looks like a good place, and I think it would be fun to take a vacation for a week or two and check it out. Even with the tax problem in Illinois, the cost of housing is so low that it is probably still an affordable place to live. I live in California, where the cost of housing is exorbitant, and I worry that I won't be able to stay here after I retire. If I can talk myself into putting up with the hot and humid summers, places like Peoria, the Quad Cities, and Bloomington/Normal could be viable options due to the lower cost of living, and they seem like very nice places. These videos make me want to visit the area - after the virus subsides, I'll have to plan a road trip to this part of the country and check it out for myself. Maybe I should visit during the winter - I like snow, and it never snows where I live.
As an aside, when you finally make it to California, you'll find plenty of places to explore. Of course, the coastal cities, such as Los Angeles and San Diego, have a wide variety of neighborhoods, from ghettos to wealthy areas, and you should check them out, but I would also recommend exploring the Central Valley. A trip up Highway 99 to visit cities, such as Bakersfield, Fresno, Madera, Modesto, Stockton, Lodi, Sacramento, Chico, and Redding, would be right up your alley. You will find some nice neighborhoods, a lot of history, and some hoods where you can use the ominous music. These are fascinating places, and they are sadly ignored and mocked by many Californians.

I’ve been to Southern Cali a couple times in the last 3 years or so! Just to the San Diego, LA and the Santa Barbara areas, and that was before I got serious about the TH-cam channel.
If you like Illinois you’ll probably like other places that will have lower taxes like Indiana, Michigan, Iowa or Wisconsin, but if you feel a special connection to Illinois and Peoria there’s nothing wrong with that and I say go for it!

    • @tinkmarz1

Unfortunately, California's big cities have arrived at a point where the average (even upper middle class) American is tired of the exorbitant cost of living to the point of moving elsewhere. These problems have even begun to extend to Seattle Washington and Portland Oregon. There are countless TH-cam videos of Californians having no choice but to move in order to enjoy life without stresses created there in taxes and mandatory fees gobbling up their incomes while dealing with hoards of homeless people in business districts, telling their regretful but necessary choices and lamenting over the past "good life" of California. "California Dreaming" has very sadly become a nightmare.
That said, I've found Peoria to be an amazing gem. Architecture is my avocation and I was blown away by downtown Peoria. The architecture from nineteenth century, mid 20th century modern to cutting edge modern is amazing! How wonderful it is to see the old is respected and well maintained while adding the well-done latest. There's an air of sophistication in Peoria found mostly in much larger and popular cities that the average person seems not to be seeing here. This, plus much culture and activities such as great minor league sports (hockey and baseball...have to mention the great baseball stadium located downtown), a zoo, museums, fine dining, warehouse district, parks and nature trails are exactly what the well educated young professionals and the urban savvy seek out and Peoria well fits the bill. And, having been in marketing, I'm familiar with the information you've shared in the first paragraph. It all spells out to an amazing city one expects in much larger cities. Now, if only the politicians would wake up to the damage they're doing to Illinois in ridiculously high taxes. I'm blowing my horn for Peoria and I'm not from there or don't (and never have) really live anywhere near there, but did visit once when I was 11 in 1960 with my parents and thought then it was a really "neat" city even back then. That's how much Peoria impresses me!
As far as this video, Creve Coeur appears to be mostly post WW2 to 1960's construction. These homes were built at a time when houses were built to last. Today the majority of typical new suburban housing is thrown together with new growth lumber (termites love it, as per one DIYer I saw on t.v.) and replete with petrochemical materials, all for profit more than anything, and many are architectural messes. Those older homes are ideal for young families to do a little work in bringing them up with a little hammering, paint and landscaping...ever see the program "Home Town"...??? That's what I'm talking about. No reason that can't happen here, with just a few talented people coming together and getting the ball rolling.

In my pre-teen years, I used to visit Vicki my second cousin once removed in Creve Coeur. I hadn't thought of that in years. I had so much fun. One night we turned a jar if lightning bugs loose in her bedroom to enjoy while in bed. All I remember was finding a room full of dead lightning bugs in the morning. I was also intriduced to the cuisine known as peanut butter and banana sandwiches. I wish I knew where she was now. Thank you for giving me a chance to remember those days.

Why are you saying that Pekin and Creve Coeur are suburbs of Peoria? Pekin is in Tazwell County and on the other side of the river Ive lived in Pekin my whole life and never heard these two towns referred to as Suburbs of any city

Creve Coeur is at least right next to East Peoria which is just across the river from Peoria, so I can see the idea of it being a Peoria “suburb”. Pekin however is definitely far enough away to be considered a separate town/city. Don’t care what Wikipedia says, no one who actually lives in this area would consider Pekin to be a Peoria “suburb”! I also looked over the Wikipedia reference you provided and nowhere did I find Pekin (or Creve Coeur) referred to as a Peoria “suburb”. The dictionary definition of suburb is a town “adjacent to” or “within commuting distance of” a larger city. Pekin is clearly not “adjacent to” Peoria. It is within commuting distance I’ll give you that. Problem with the “commuting distance” definition is that so are a ton of other places. I live in Bloomington and used to commute to Peoria for work. I know others who do the same. So is Bloomington a Peoria suburb? No? Then what about Eureka? It’s midway between Bloomington and Peoria. Where do you stop or draw the line? I think an ACTUAL suburb needs to be physically adjacent... Sort of like the Chicago burbs where you can drive from Chicago to Evergreen Park to Oak Lawn to Chicago Ridge to Worth to Palos Heights to Tinley Park and they are all connected and right up adjacent to each other. I do enjoy your tours but I thought your response telling Tim (a local) to “Read up” was rather rude. I 100% agree with Tim, nobody who actually lives here considers Pekin a “suburb” of Peoria.

@@PMCraig he has a video all about Pekin and in the title say Pekin is a suburb WTF lol I have asked several people including the mayor and the other local officials and they say the same thing not true lol Wikipedia is not a good site for true information it has in recent years become allowed as a reference in essay writing but still considered not reliable thank you for your comment that was so good to read.

@@PMCraig The river is the only thing that separates nonstop residential or business areas from each other. East Peoria is bordered to Marquette Heights then North Pekin, then Pekin with no separation between them. So yes, it is a suburb otherwise it wouldn't be included in the Peoria metropolitan population. There isn't a Pekin metropolitan population because Pekin is suburb of Peoria. It literally would be connected to Peoria with continuous border to border towns if there was no river.

Something you may want to look into while doing informational “tours” of the Creve Coeur and Pekin area is their connections and backgrounds with the KKK. It is still an issue to this day, they were just sending letters to people and tossing flyers around town and in East Peoria in the summer of 2020.
Not an ideal place to raise a family, cheap or not.
Not to mention they are known in the area for their production of meth, canton is known for crack. 🤦🏻‍♀️ people can say what they want about Peoria but I feel safer there than in the very racist “suburbs”.
