I always learn something in every video you have. Great job as always. You certainly have a impressive collection. I agree with you totally, music does bring the races together. You are the vinyl king Gavin!
I love your artwork! I love Benny, the modern Jazz Quartet. Wow I dint know Apple produced Jazz artists! I love Ramsey Lewis too. I remember when gas attendants washed the windshieds. I used to love the smell of gas when I was young! Great video! Thumbs up!! Trish
Thanks Trish! So many good memories we can share ... and remember , "It's all about the music." Take care and keep those videos coming, you're a ton of fun.
Your MJQ selections were spot on, Gavin I so enjoy your videos my brother. My guess on the smokes Camels, always a pleasure to watch your stuff. Cheers from New York Bro.
I can't believe I had the Camels turned around but you were clever enough to recognize them. Thanks about the MJQ. Kind words. I love them guys as I also like the Jazz Crusaders and the Jazz Messengers. Glad you came by, brother. And cheers from Kansas.
Much agreed on the beauty of the VC. I wasn't engaged socially on the internet in the least until 5 years ago when I came across the VC...now I can hardly think of a better example of this kind of interaction at it's most positive and affirming. I love especially the mixture of various trumpeters in one portrait with your drawings here. I remember my grandma telling me about going to see jazz in the 40's and 50's and how it brought people together of different colors in ways little else seemed to at the time. Wonderful, that 'Guitar Guitar' album. This reminds me that it's due for a revisit here. :-) I only have a couple by MJQ, though none that you showed here. Gary Burton is the only example offhand of a jazz player covering 'Norwegian Wood'. Oh gosh, how I miss 'Jazz Central'! I know I still have video tapes of various episodes. I remember an early one I'd seen was Ginger Baker's trio with a couple of Swedish players. It went well beyond the standard 'piano trio' format. Do you remember 'Studio Jams'? That was another really cool, sort of offshoot too the show. Not familiar with David Mann. Shall certainly investigate. Really digging into my own past with 'Bitches Brew'! :-) That and 'Weather Report's I sing the body electric' even more so, were touchstones getting me into increasingly adventurous jazz when I was 15, 16 years old. What a trip with the beer bottle! I'm guessing Kid Ory was smoking Camels? My uncle smoked those and I remember as a kid being a bit fascinated there was no filter... I'm guessing you're into some ECM too, that you showed the Return to Forever and mentioning Keith Jarrett? (another all-time favorite here) I remember Pat Metheny saying something along the lines of: 'If George Benson did a guitar trio album once a year, the world would be a better place.' I really liked that. Wonderful video again here. Very cool getting to know you more. -Carm
Thank you for the generous response and your insights and memories. I love how your parents are a part of your music memories. Your knowledge of music is pretty impressive and YES I remember studio jams, my goodness how I do. I learned about groups like Bone Structure, the Groovin Girls (from Japan) and Wax Poetic which gave us Nora Jones. I've recorded on DVD almost every single episode of J.C. and I'm wondering if I should ever attempt to post them on youtube. I'm heading out now but I'll be getting in touch with you later. So nice getting to meet you.
Well, I'm glad you liked it. I'll have moe to come as much of my collection is jazz. I hope you go to a thrift store someday and come across a ton of jazz that's not only cheap but happens to be on sale. Have a good one.
I agree Joni's album Mingus is great. Love her albums with Jaco. Bitches Brew is an essential album. Love it. Miles is my fave jazz artist. Stanley Clarke is in my top five bassists. Saw him live a few years ago and he was awesome.
Hi Lou. I love the Jaco/Joni stuff as well. "Hejira" comes to mind. I do remember how much you love Miles and glad you got to see Stanley Clarke. Nice of you to stop by.
Great jazz video, check out Jeff Becks version of Goodbye Pork Pie Hat on the album Wired if you haven't. His control of feedback and tone is stunning. I wish my town had a jazz club like the good old days, there's nothing better than chilling with a tall drink and enjoying the music. You presented a fine cross section of albums and I always look forward to your videos. Also glad your feeling well, congrats on 100 subs too!
Thanks so much for telling me about the Jeff Beck. I can't wait to hear that. Thanks for the nice words, Kurt. I've got a lot of catching up on uploading and watching your uploads now that I've go the time and energy to do so.
Thanks for subscribing to my channel. I’ve been going through your videos and all I can say is wow! You are so diverse when it comes to music and I love that. You’re also a vert talented artist. I wonder what that beer taste like? Lol!
Hi Gavin, a very informative video since I am still on the steep learning curve with Jazz. I know the names, but the music inside out like you. I look forward to exploring.
There's so much to Jazz, Cameron. The more I discover the more I have to discover. I'm certainly enjoying your uploads and now we're at letter B. Always good to hear from you.
Nice to see you back-nice stuff you showed! I really like jazz, and have a CD that has a bazillion jazz tracks on it; think it's just called "Classical Jazz Volume 2" or something. I forget which volume it is. Anyway, it's very relaxing very just easy to listen to & surely takes a lot of talent to play. I really love listening to it with the windows open and the sun shining into my living room in the summer (most likely while working on a paper or six LOL!). BTW, I'm from Ann Arbor, MI :) :)
I have so many friends from Michigan and they're all wonderful people. I was so happy with D.J. Trish gave you the VCLT. "A paper or six ... " how funny. Keep that brain of yours sharp!
I'm in a PhD program so I have no choice about the papers LOL! Thanks! I was thrilled to have a new mix (my first ever one from her) from Trish. she's so generous. Us Michiganders are indeed fabulous people…LOL!!!! :) Keep up the nice work. I should have two videos up tomorrow; both contest entries.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed with moment here. And "Bitches Brew" Two copies???? They're kinda rare these days. That's something to brag about. BTW you've come up quite a bit (good stuff, of course) and I'm surprised I hadn't subbed already. Heading your way right now.
I'm really not into Swing with the exception of Benny Goodman. I had Plastic Dreams by the Modern Jazz Quartet in the early 70's. If I showed all my Jazz half would be Miles.
I agree with you about swing and Benny. He just seemed to transcend the subgenre. And I can't live without my Plastic Dreams. Miles? Ah, don't ya just love his music! Have you posted some/all/any of your collection? If not, will you?
I always learn something in every video you have. Great job as always. You certainly have a impressive collection. I agree with you totally, music does bring the races together. You are the vinyl king Gavin!
Thanks G-man, it's always an honor to hear from you. Keep those scammers squirmin' brother.

Before watching this, I knew nothing about jazz. Now I at least know something. Really enjoy your take on music.
That's really nice of you to say. I've always loved Jazz and the more I explore the poorer I get. Glad you came by!

Nice jazz video. I am still in the very early learning stages of jazz. I pick it up when I can find it at a good price.

I really enjoyed your take on Jazz. I have 2 copies of Bitches Brew. I love it that much. Dig The Sermon by Jimmy Smith too.
