Why not just use a $10 VoIP ATA and not have to modify anything on the phone itself?

Sounds interesting; I have no knowledge of those devices. What comes out the other side? Ethernet? USB? Are there drivers for the Pi or similar?

@@CaseyConnor The VoIP ATA connects to the Raspberry Pi that runs Asterisk (A free open-source telephony toolkit) from there you can interface with all the functions of the phone and write your own code to do whatever you want.

Number 5ESS nice. Sounds like a much easier route. :-)

@@CaseyConnor I like my route because it preserves the phone in its original state while being able to use the phone perfectly and utilize all of its functions very easily and it is all open-source and easy to operate.

@@tieline1333 Is there a particular ATA you recommend?

I'm glad I found your video this morning. Your project blends an artifact from the past with modern technology, a true cyberpunk endeavor. The production quality of this video is top-notch.
I have my grandma's old Ma-Bell rotary phone that I brought home after her funeral. She passed 10 years ago today. I still have ideas to convert that phone into a usable sip client softphone. But now I want to find some old video of her and include her voice. I would create a special number that I could call from that phone and hear her voice again. I may just take apart that old phone tonight and see what I'm up against.
    Great job. thanks

Beautiful -- good luck with the project! As time goes by these old phones are taking on increasingly more magical properties. :-)

This reminds me of an Indigo Girls lyric: And here's a young girl on a kind on a kind of a telphone line through time and the voice at the other end comes like a long lost friend.
I remember you talking about this friend when you were in town last. They played with you in Rattletrap Ruccus, right? I'm gonna go listen to a couple of songs on that channel now in his honor. Love you, Cousin Casey. Stay wonderful, dude.
P.s. I've heard strobe lights can be effective against rodents. Maybe even if it doesn't deter them you could try one in conjunction with one of your traps to see if it slightly disorients them, making them fall for the trap more easily.

Ah yeah, forgot about that IG lyric, thanks. :-) Yes, Lucas was in RTR. And thanks for the strobe idea -- always good to have more ideas. Love, -c

Wonderful idea. Would love to see video of it working.

Thanks !-- a video probably won't happen, but it was eerie how "real" it felt to use the phone. Turns out a dial tone is pretty easy to fake. :-)

Have you seen the Twilight Zone episode titled "Long Distance Call"?

Just checked it out. So far there have been no responses from the phone but we'll keep listening. :-)

I'm really interested in re-creating this. would you happen to have a wiring diagram?

Hi Josh -- I'm sorry, I don't... but it's pretty straightforward. Honestly I think I cover all the connections verbally in the video, so if you want to sketch one up I think it would suffice? Let me know if there are particular questions you have and I can try to answer them. It's been a few years now. :-)

Nice job! I'm always curious to see other people's rotary phone projects. Ringing the phone is doable using a 555 timer, power transistor and step up transformers. With a little experimentation you can generate voltage spikes on the the phone line large enough to vibrate the hammer and ring the bells. You would need a separate power supply and a way to isolate the phone line from your Raspberry Pi voltage rails and GPIOs to avoid blowing anything up with the voltage spikes though. I'm using an Arduino and Adafruit Fona GSM, plus some TTL for dial pulse decoding. Check out my project here: th-cam.com/video/YcoMQP8CKmg/w-d-xo.html
