    Great video, thank you so much, my daughter has raised 3 sweet hens, our one that is brooding is so sweet she doesn’t fight us at all but she is stubborn, even the other hens coming running up to my car when I get home from work, they are like dogs lol. My daughter did such a nice job. Iam going to give this a shot! Thank you!

    This is common with Buff Orpingtons. A 5 minute cool water bath does the trick for mine. Submerge the main body of the hen in a container of water (of course keep her neck and head up out of the water). Hold her there for 5-6 minutes. Towel dry when done. And let her go.

    In your opinion what breeds of chickens are the broodiest? i have also heard that it is not the breed as much as it is the individuals in the breed. True?

      +Shona Wilson
      Shona, I would recommend two cages just because they tend to be small for two. If they are big enough for two, give it a try. The idea to break the warmth under them so as long as they get along and are comfortable, it should work fine.

  • @shwiger
    @shwiger 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only suggestion I would have is to have it out of a shaded corner and not let her see her nest.

    where can I get a cage like this and what size is the cage , I have a broody hen and the rest of the hens are giving her a hard time . they chase her from the next and want let her eat or drink much .

      Ronda, several places come to mind. If you like one on the cheap, I would try swap meets and flea markets. I have seen them at our feed store or if not they can get them. Farm supply stores in your area can at least get them if they don't carry them. Also there is google, just google chicken wire cage.... Brooding hens can be frustrating for sure.

    Where did you get the feed and water bowls?

    • @TPPrepper
      @TPPrepper  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bowls are actually heavy cat water bowl. yea the cat still has water but we used this bowl with the chicken because it's heavy and this craze bird could not knock it over easily.

      So Stam it sounds like your ready to have her hatch some eggs. That's great if that's where you are. We did not want a brood at the time so its far better to break her this time.

    Can I put a roosting pole in? Mine seems so uncomfortable on the wire

    • @victorbausell7383
      @victorbausell7383 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine seemed that way too but the cage is to small to put one in. They seem to get over the brood fairly quickly so I just let her go.

    • @locksmithmuggle
      @locksmithmuggle 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@victorbausell7383 I put a roosting pole in there. I figured roosting/nesting are such different behavior that it should help break her brood. I use an old dog crate, just slide a pole through the gaps in the wire. She stopped rearing at me after three days so I let her out and she hasn't been brooding since!

    Why do not build doors in front of niches?
    If he can't return on the same den, automatically stop hatch (with mine works).
    So you would not need to close it in a cage.

    • @thefamilychickens5261

      +TheFamilyChickens Tell me if with your works, thanks!

    • @TPPrepper
      @TPPrepper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheFamilyChickens By niches I assume you mean the nesting boxes. If you put a door on the boxes, no bird can use them and we don't want that. Since SHE would pick any box to lay in, you cannot isolate just one. That would not take care of her issue with wanting to brood just access to the box and eggs. The cage with the cooler air underneath works just fine and did the trick with this bird.

    Fortunately, my semi-broody speckled sussex hen has gone full broody and I have put eggs under her on last tuesday morning. On the tuesday evening, she came for the food and water. After that she did not left her nest again. My worry is that the hens eat, drink and poop once a day while sitting on eggs. But she is not doing so. On saturday, I pulled her out of the nest. She pooped but did not eat or drank. She tried to join the flock while making broody voices and puffing up feathers. She thought I did not want her to incubate eggs and she accepted it. Then I forced her to go to the nest which she happily accepted. Now she is sitting again continuously. Please tell me is this normal behavior if she don't eat/drink for 15-16 more days? I put food and water in the nesting box which she could approach while sitting but she has no interest in it at all.

      Sumaira, well she seems intent of hatching some eggs so I would say support her if you want her to. We have not let a hen do this but will probably do this next year or so. The Chicken Chick had a great article on this, here is the link: www.the-chicken-chick.com/2013/08/caring-for-broody-hens-facilitating-egg.html. She has direct experience with doing this, let me know how it goes!

      Midhu Martin Thank you soooooooooo much for your reply. It is a complete guide for me what to do for my hen. I did so with her today. There is another serious problem with the same hen. Perhaps you will be able to help me in solving it too. Its day 16 and her wattle is turning white. Her face has already become white! I see one little insect walking on her face since last few days. Perhaps its some sort of mite. It was not there before this sitting on eggs. There is no problem of uncleanliness. What can I do for it? I have read somewhere that wattle/comb is discolored when worms reside inside the intestine. Another hen of mine has tape worms and is on medication for it but this broody one did not have any such problem.

      Midhu Martin once again a perfect description. I am really extremely grateful to u for it. My broody's comb is ok and there r very few mites. It means I don't need to worry for anything. She is very happy after my pulling her out of the nest yesterday and today folowing all of ur instructions. She especially enjoyed dust bath. After she got rid of 10 days toxic poop, her face color has improved.
      She is safe in the nesting box inside her "bed room" which is upstairs her "living room". This little coop is in our courtyard well protected by weather too. She is even safe from other two hens. Fortunately, there are no predators and snowfal in my area. I just need to baware of crows when I wil let my few week old chicks roam in the courtyard or roof terrace. Once again thank u so much. Because me and my family members were thinking to stop the hatch after two weeks because of these problems which u solved :-) we were afraid that we will loose her if she continues to hatch like this for 1 more day. Day 18 is going to start so can't candel the eggs now but thats not a big problem unlike other problems. May Allah always turn ur difficulties into easiness. (aameen)

      Hi. My speckled sussex has hatched 7 chicks. She is too much protective towards her chicks. Even it is a challenge to provide her food and water without getting pecked! I gave her incubator-chicks trickily which were of exactly the same color as is of her own. But she identified them very carefully after some time and tried to kill them so I separated those. Anyway, I need to know how long she is expected to keep her chicks with herself? As you know she was very dedicated during incubation period and now she is too much possessive, will she look after them for 4-5 months?? Actually I want her to hatch again in July/August, twice a year.
