      Feeding chicks with dry food is terrible! You have no clue what it is madden from! First food got to be 100% natural! Boiled an egg and crash it, mixing with millet and that would be a grate food for chicks plus add some send soil from your field to start digesting process. Store food have a lot of crap in it, I would give that them if I sell them to my enemies.

      Frederick Dunn thank you, also I would like to ask what do I do when I have a broody hen that has different date for most of her eggs? Should I put them in my incubator? Or should I just let her do her thing? I just a afraid she'll abandon the other eggs for the one egg or not teach the chick how to eat. What should I do?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When a hen is allowed to brood her own eggs, it's important to keep removing eggs until you start them all together, that's why we mark them, so they are at the same stage of development. Each day, you need to remove any "added" eggs so she is only setting the marked eggs. She would definitely abandon any late hatching eggs. If a chick hatches after the mother leaves the nest, you can generally still expect her to accept that chick. They do learn from their mother very fast, but a chick without a mother also learns to eat and drink by instinct, they just aren't as savvy as those reared with hens.

    You're absolutely right about Rhode Island reds not going broody. But I have one that hatched out 8 babies and she's actually a great mother. This has never happened before with my RR's. It will probably never happen again with any other RR hen of mine. Her sister is a typical RR hen and has no desire to set.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Don, the broody nature was bred out of the breed in order to preserve egg production, BUT, you can selectively breed from your hen that is showing broody traits if you want to and gradually bring broodiness into your own flock over many years.

    Hello Fred, I can use a bit of advise here. I have three broody hens who have gone broody more or less at the same time and received separate clutches eggs at one time. They have been brooding in the nest boxes. Today, I am going to give them their own maternity ward. Would it be advisable to have them all in one big box sitting side by side, and later raising the chicks together? That would save me a lot of trouble not having to manage them individually.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would recommend separating them by a screen or chicken wire. Some hens immediately adopt all chicks they find when their own hatch and the scuffles between new mother hens can get serious which may include trampling the newly hatched chicks. If they are all incubating at the same time and will hatch at the same time, I suggest separation while being able to see and heae one another .

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Destiny, there is no way to encourage a hen to go "broody" other than providing nice nest boxes, in dark corners, where the hen can feel safe and secure. Broodiness is a genetic trait and some breeds simply don't brood and never will. If you want hens that hatch eggs on their own, you may want to select a breed that is known for being broody... Cochins, Silkies, d'Uccle, Americaunas and so on... But if a hen does not behave in a broody way, you can't force it.

    Do mother hens often fight over chicks? I would love to raise some 3 dozen chicks under three different mommas, but should I separate each of them just in case? Is it more likely that mothers will fight? Does it also depend on the personality, or the breed of the mother?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you should seperate them as the chicks often collect under a single hen, or hens get in conflicts and stomp on the chicks in the maylay. It's particularly a problem if the chicks are all brought in at the same time. I've had brood hens setting on "fake" eggs, and after the 18th day, introduced day old chicks while removing the decoy eggs and the mother hen took to them right away. It's a nice way to have a living brooder as well as a hen that will teach them how to survive. :)

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Problem is that most of the great free ranging birds don't go broody anymore, BUT, you can of course incubate them yourself, assuming you have roosters as well. Another option would be to get a few cochin hens and then when they are broody, just place the eggs you want to hatch under those hens.

    • @Stupidityindex
      @Stupidityindex 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frederick Dunn I'm interested in farming at a scale of about 20 or 30 birds because I have a few acres of grass, a coop, but I am clueless about making it work from an economic point, except I would need to put in some crop for winter feed. I'm not interested in the meat & I can't use so many eggs. But if I had a meat birds or some with a low egg production I would enjoy the eggs. Perhaps I should look at keeping a breed that is becoming rare & shoot for selling to a unique minded market, stick with the calm birds. I like the Easter egg birds I have. Perhaps it makes the most sense to just get a brooder hen or two.

    I have two broody hens sitting side by side. One is due to hatch in 4 days, and the other is getting a batch of fertile eggs today (she's been sitting on duds for 5 days). I'm concerned that when the chicks hatch Mama #2 will abandon her eggs in favor of the chicks. Should I set up partitions? I want to keep things as natural as possible and don't really want to cage Mama and her chicks. Thoughts?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I recommend partitioning them, it's very common for a brood hen to see peeps from another hen and leave her own eggs to parent those chicks. If the mother hen of the hatching chicks is not dominant, she can lose her brood to the more dominant hen. I've brought a handfull of day old peeps into the coop just to have a hen hop off her eggs and pace in front of me until I put them down for her and off they went. You have the right instinct there Leana :)

    • @FrederickDunn

      IF your silkies are getting along with each other, they just may co-parent the hatchlings. IF they are not getting along, then you should definitely separate them as when the chicks hatch they may fight over the chicks and stomp them in the process. Personally, to be safe, I would divide the eggs between each hen and put them in separate brooder cages.

      If a hen is already broody, setting on eggs, then you can place other eggs under her. IF she is not broody, then you can't do anything about that. But hens don't know their own eggs from others, so will hatch fertile eggs from any other chicken. They can even hatch ducks for you, but they freak out when their "chicks" head for water! :)

    About how many roosters are needed per flock of hens to ensure each egg is fertile?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      A good ratio for a rooster in his prime (3 years old or younger) is 1 rooster to 10 hens. Remember, he only needs to mate each hen once every 10 days to keep her eggs fertile. There are hens that may "dodge" specific roosters, so you may need to observe how receptive she is.

    • @fcspikeit
      @fcspikeit 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frederick Dunn Thank you for the info! I wasn't sure how often he needed to bread to fertilize the eggs. Is 10 days the very max or is that a safe estimate for high fertility of the eggs?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fred Carter Ten days is good. For example, when selecting for breeding, a hen has to be set aside so she can't have mated with a rooster for 14 days, by that time, any fertile eggs will certainly have passed and the next mating will be true to the rooster. So, 10 days or less will have a high fertility/hatch rate.

    • @FrederickDunn

I hope you can find someone near you so you can get the breeds you want. I have shipped eggs to Hawaii and over half of them did hatch, but I think a shipment all the way to Thailand would just be a waste of money. You may find international shippers on EBay.

    Dear Frederick, People who make noisy music-jarr-filled videos with a constantly shaking, swimming, zooming in and out camera and who never stop talking should learn from this wonderful video you have made. There is music in natural silence and peace which should not be killed off by man-made music or constant prattle. And thank you for putting your camera on a tripod. One of the curses of modern video making is hand-held cameras that zoom in and out of your face all the time. Please extend your video making to other subjects, although poultry is certainly my favorite. A good way to start one's day is not to watch the news, but with a video such as yours, or if you can afford it, to stroll through and contemplate nature. Thanks and good luck with more video-making.

      Agreed, I just started my backyard flock last weekend with 4 hybrid layers. I've been researching backyard birds for about a year. I had to wait for local bylaws to change to allow the animals into suburbia. In retrospect, the wait has been valuable to allow for more planning and preparation.
      I found generally youtube videos the least effective source after books and websites. It seems that a lot of homesteader channels are about promoting the producers of the videos first, and if you're lucky there might be some knowledge shared. That's not a dig at other channels. Everyone needs to make money and we watch videos for different reasons. Yours along with a few others have been helpful. Thanks.

      @@FrederickDunn I had a pet fox. I bought him when he was 8 days old and gave him every 3 hours a bottle, day and night. He became the most beautiful and adorable fox you've ever seen. He played with my dogs and we gone for a walk together every day 3 times. Once my fox sneaked out of the house (the children let the front door open!!) and was gone for 3 days. I surched for him together with one of my dogs every late evening. When I found him and brought him home, I noticed one of his hind legs was terrible hurt, no skin was there anymore. My vet said he was trapped and released himself but for what a price! Was with him to the vet every day and his leg healed slowly. But then suddenly he didnt want to eat anymore and my vet found out my fox was not only trapped but also POISENED!! And after some days he died: screaming and crawling on his knees! If I only knew at that moment who did this to my fox, (he was not even 1 year old), I certainly would have killed the person! As soon he had disappeared I put an annonce in the newspaper and said he would not harm any other animal because he is a pet and please let me know if you have seen him. But not any response. I will never forget.!

    This is lovely, Frederick. I will order your video. Today I made a huge mistake by pushing and breaking some elephant grass, then 'weed-eating' it... only to discover my sweetest mama bird was sitting on eggs where I couldn't see her - on the other side of my "work". I'm afraid I have totally traumatized her and she is walking around as if she is disheartened. The eggs are still there. Should I take them to the coop and hope she - or one of the other hens - will hatch them? Hmmm... $8 must have been the 2019 price - before 'the inflation that wasn't". :)

If you have an incubator that you can put them in, that would be best. If you try to put them under other brood hens that already have eggs, they will likely be hatching out at different times and it could be a disaster. @@FrederickDunn - :) yes, I noticed it was online AFTER I ordered it. :) I found another batch of eggs under the pink primrose plants next to a grapevine. The chickens have been busy. First, a dog killed a chicken in a very dramatic episode, THEN, I found a snake in the laying boxes... and more snakes showed up after that. So I think the chickens have been terrified and don't trust their coop any longer. Might have to move it further from the woods. ? Since the eggs have not been 'sat on' all day, every day, can they still hatch?
      You might want to change your statement that is "pinned", to reduce confusion among your admirers. This is a really wonderful video. Thanks again.

    Cute, I love chickens ❤ Something interesting I learned is that hens don't necessarily have to sit the full 21 days in order to accept chicks. Last month I had 2 banty hens sit 2 weeks apart. So when the first hen's eggs hatched the 2nd hen abandoned her eggs and adopted the other hen's chicks instead. She had only been sitting one week.
    I ended up with 17 baby chicks out of 17 or 18 eggs.
    The chicks seem to enjoy having 2 mothers co parenting them.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's true, in fact you can order in day-old peeps and start a hen on eggs that are made of wood, ceramic, or even store bought eggs. Simply remove those eggs as you introduce the new chicks and she will adopt them. Hens are easily turned into foster mothers (">

    Thank you for the gentle video. I am planning to do this for the first time and am researching! You seem to be unusual in leaving the broody with her eggs in the main coop until hatch. Most advice is to remove to a separate enclose to avoid damage and bullying from other birds. Do you find this is not a concern?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The hen is kept with her chicks in the same coop as all of the others. They are separated by cage wire until their 6th week of development. Keeping them all in the same structure keeps them all familiar with one another and this limits picking etc...

    • @FrederickDunn

      Depending on your coop setup annnnd if she's well mated by a rooster this time of year, those chicks may be a little deficient nutritionally. Free ranging gives them very strong vitamin rich reproductive material, during winter, most hens are on production rations and lack the valuable proteins. If they do turn out to be viable and begin developing, you will need extra bedding under that hen and have a brooder prepared for her and the chicks upon hatching. If it were one of my hens, I wouldn't use this time of year for her to rear chicks. You will be able to candle those eggs within a week and know if they are developing. I wish you the best.

We did move her to a broody pen inside the main pen because the others would not lay in the other box and were disturbing her! She took to it all well. Another thing i learned from this was to use shavings under her and get rid of the straw from the nest. It is July and the natural time for baby chicks in the South of France where we are. The other birds and cock won't go into their pen at night anymore and are roosting on top of the broody pen as now it is far more interesting! Beautiful bit of film - thank you!
