I have a 2022 Lexus ES300h. I just drove to Maryland from Buffalo NY and back and got 44.5 MPG mostly cruising between 70 - 80MPH. In hot weather I've gotten 50 MPG. Awesome vehicle - fully loaded - a 6 hour drive doesn't even fatigue this 70 yr old driver. Plenty of power on the highway to merge into traffic. The Avalon was always the unsung hero. I know so many people that have Avalon’s between 2002 and 2010 and many of them are well over the 200,000 mile mark, with two of them over the 300,000 mile mark. What a great car. I have been driving my first hybrid the past two months; a company car (BMW X3 xDrive 30e M Sport/ PHEV). Combined HP is just under 300HP. Most of the mileage is from the work commute, on roads with speeds between 30mph and 45mph, max. Range on electric is around 27 miles...but I live in a mountainous place with the office in the city (Lausanne, Switzerland), so plenty of opportunity to benefit from the kinetic recharge. I also recharge the battery to its full capacity every night. The commute is almost entirely done on the battery (to/from).
The gas over here is pretty damn expensive...ranging from $8.30/gallon down to $7.30/gallon these past two months. I have topped off the gas tank every week and a half...spending around $15 to bring it back to full.
Considering both weekend driving (some highway mileage) and the daily commute, I have saved around 85% in gas expenses these past two months. Considering electricity expenses, net savings is around 70% or about $350 per month in total.
Would I own this as a personal vehicle...no. It's a BMW! Perfect company car, with its 4 year lease and full maintenance plan. However, if I were to take a mid-sized SUV as a personal vehicle, it would be the Toyota RAV4 PHEV. Similar size and better range. Cannot beat Toyota for reliability.
I cannot imagine what the maintenance costs would be with the BMW in 5 to 6 years, but I assume it would be eye watering.

I have a 2011 Avalon with 123K miles. It looks, runs, and drives likes its new. In some ways it has that feeling like a heavy German car that is planted to the road and sails down the highway. But when you need it to it makes quick turns and emergency maneuvers without losing composure. And it’s quiet inside and the backseat legroom is enormous, like a town car. I get 22-24 city and 30+ highway. For the new model the XLE is the model to get or swap out the low pro tires/wheels. I test drove a XLE and fell in love. I’ll probably get one.
