  • The Dell Precision T5820 Workstation is a hybrid between a consumer level desktop and an enterprise level server. It runs on server grade components, but in a desktop form factor. In our video, we will provide an overview specifically on drives. We will also provide a few general tips and tricks to make your upgrades and installation process as smooth as possible. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the Dell Precision T5820 Solid State Drives Installation Guide.
Let’s get rolling. The Dell Precision T5820 supports hard drives and solid state drives. The T5820 only supports SATA, and since SSD’s can come in SAS or SATA, please verify which drive you’re selecting on our site before you buy. In order to use a SAS drive in this chassis, you must have a RAID controller installed. SATA Solid State Drives can be installed and operate without the need for a RAID controller. We recommend Solid State Drives over Hard Drives. SSDs are not only faster (better performance), they are also more reliable. Hard Drives are less expensive, which is the main reason the technology still exists today.
The Dell Precision T5820 has a PCIe backplane chassis with an integrated Intel controller and allows this system up to 4 3.5” drives with MegaRAID. Please note that according to Dell’s Spec Sheet, only 1 front accessible M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD is supported and the backplane plus the adapter kit are needed. FlexBays can support up to 2x 3.25” or 2.5” drives each and a single 5.25” Bay as a factory option or customer kit. The alternative to these is using an PCIe to NVMe adapter, but that can limit you on the other devices you might need to use those PCIe lanes for, like a graphics card for example.
The Dell Precision T5820 Workstation can have a max size of 2TB for SATA for a 2.5" hard drive, whereas a SATA can go all the way up to 12TB. The max size with a SATA Solid State Drive is 7.68TB. The max speed of your SATA hard drive will be 7.2K. and again a Solid State Drive really shows its superiority with speeds of either 3GB/s or 6GB/s.
We will also show you how to install a new drive into your T5820. This is super easy since these drives are hot swap, meaning you can install a drive while the server is running. We will also go over how to test your drives with HD Sentinel. This is very common on 15K SAS hard drives because their bearings wear out over time. HD Sentinel is great for checking the Health Scores and Power On Hours for drives.
The highly versatile Dell Precision T5820 will work for a wide variety of applications such as a home desktop, gaming, or office server.

Good video! I just put together a T5820 that was bought on an auction site. I outfitted it with 4 x 480GB 2.5 SSDs, 1 PCI-E M.2 NVME (using a Dell branded adapter) and a 8TB spinning rust in the CD ROM/Flexbay using a Dell branded adapter to 3.5. It is running Ubuntu LTS 22.04 and has three Windows VMs. I found out that the Intel RST RAID does not work with Linux, but ended up using Linux Raid, which worked fine. Just my experience with this machine.

I think you forgot to mention to activate the button in the Front First you have to Unlock it from the inside by removing the side panel and clicking on the blue unlock button at the top

My 5820 did not come with nvme flex caddy. Can i just buy the nvme caddy and plug it into any of the 4 bays or does it need to be in a specific slot as well as needing a special back plane you mentioned ?
