It's 2024...I am 72 and grew up listening to Merle. Miss him and George and so many others. So thankful to have this platform to keep their music alive and available anytime the mood hits.
Just saw this on Willie's 91st birthday. Merle is my favorite ever. He would borrow minnows when I was 15 on Lake McClure in '74. Had a houseboat across the dock from us. Always replaced them and then some. I didn't even realize then.....how much he would mean to me later. Thanks Willie for doing this for our friend
The worst part of getting old is NOT being frail, nor having more aches and pains. The absolute worst is losing your old friends. Getting old ain't for wimps.
True willie he won't b gone while us fans keep his music alive an while his sons keep paying tribute an singing his song yippees for writing this willie❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊
Merle considered Willie one of his closest friends, and Willie felt the same about Merle. Willie honoured his friend of 50 years the best way he knew how, by singing a hauntingly beautiful song together with Merle's youngest son, Ben, who sings backup and plays guitar throughout the song.
God bless you Willie you are the very first one with your beautiful tribute to Merle I know you and Merle were like brothers. You always will be. I keep you in my prayers 🙏 every night 🙏
Who's gonna make a song for Willie when he is gone (hope that is a long time away.) Since most of the old country legends are already ''gone''. Anyway you will be always on our minds.❤
The guitar riff at the end by Ben Haggard, Merle's son... WOW! It gets me in the "feels." I shut my eyes and just see Merle effortlessly playing that jazzy riff on his Tuff-Dog Telecaster. Instead, it's Merle channeling through his son, and it couldn't be more beautiful. It's a signature style all to Merle, and thankfully his DNA is living large in Ben as well.
Willie can write a song about every single situation in life! What a talent...this is a good example of Willie singing about a friend of his who passed away. NO ONE WE LOVE is ever really gone, because they live on in our hearts and minds forever!
I was looking at my facebook page and I saw a Happy Birthday tribute to Merle. A few hours later, I saw a remembering Merle Haggard tribute and I honestly thought they had fucked up! I looked at Yahoo news and...there it was...Merle Haggard had died, on his birthday. I was born in '77. I had never met the man. Never saw him in person. My Mama introduced me to him through his music and I fell in love with lots of songs. It felt like a family member died when I saw that he was gone that day....still does. This is a lovely tribute with if I remember correctly, Ben (?) playing his guitar?
There can't be a tribute more beautiful than this! Such warmth in the lyrics, such deep feelings in the voice. Brought me tears! Wondering how difficult it would be to sing this without crying. Deep respect for Willie & Merle. Love
Theres really nothin like laughter with a Friend.....Unless yer makin music together.....then its Heaven.....MERLE/WILLIE...God bless MERLE and Long live WILLIE...

I have loved and played Merles songs since 1979. The man was well full of songs and every time he dipped that bucket he came out with a HIT! I cried when 3 men died: Elvis Presley,,, George Jones,,,,, Merle Haggard. One by one the lights go out in the world of REAL music. God only loans the BEST ones to us ,but for awhile, and then He calls them HOME. RIP
Thank you very much Willie! He will always love on as so many others do before him. You will, too! We are so blessed to have you and all in our lives! God bless you always... Smiles, Hugs with Love. Mary
I love this song. Good job, Willie. Such a wonderful tribute to the best ever. He will never be gone, not as long as we can play his music, which I do every single day. Merle was the best. Thank you Willie for this song. Enjoy your music also.

I always wanted to meet you in person so I could share some things that were illegal at the time and play a little music with you!! I loved and enjoyed all you music. I’v even been Texas to see you. I not nuts, just so you know! Just wanted to sit down and visit a spell. Right now I love the way you are keeping Merle alive!! He’s the best favorite beside you!! My mom being from Navaoato, Texas I just wanted one day way back when to be able to meet you in person! You truly one of my heroes???
I have been country since late 70s and never much a Willie fan, except for about a half dozen songs. When it comes to this song for our legend Mighty Merle, Willie nailed it. If you listen to Willie sing, the way he carries the note/tune, its epic. Its perfection at its finest.
The day Willie dies is the day country music dies
Wow . . . so beautiful. Thank you Willie for this tribute to Merle Haggard
The planet may have stopped spinning for a moment when Merle passed, but Willie, when it's your turn, the entire universe will skip a beat.
Will the world even know? Doubtfull theyll just replace him again and again...this is how I have loved so many musicians.

Definitely a heartfelt performance by Willy. The song was written by Gary Nicholson.
Willie Nelson shows much love for friendship with Merle Haggard and can write a great song of tribute.
Willie gets better with age. please take care of yourself Willie, we can't afford to lose anymore of the greats.

Great and interesting.

Right back at you Bud
Country music will never die that's for sure all them thats gone have made sure of that
Country music was Merle. The men and women from that era made real country music.
You’re absolutely right. Country is getting filled with rap and I hate it.
They don't make them like that anymore! There's been a murder on Music Row :-(
You are so right!!

Maybe the most moving song since George Jones' "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes"
I felt same with George singing who is gonna fill those shoes!
I totally love Merle lol! And tried to do a tribute lol
agree, i just listened 5 times, just amazing
Sadly little did George know that it would be a bunch of pop country frat boys that were going fill them.

What a beautiful song, and Willie sings it from the heart. Superb.
Got the news this morning

And it wouldn't be all it is without Merle
He won't ever be gone

A fugitive and a branded man
Mama tried to understand
Left us a lifetime of songs
And he won't ever be gone
We were friends right from the start
We shared some high times
I would sing some songs he wrote
He would sing a few of mine
The music made us brothers till the end
And not a day goes by that I don't miss him
He won't ever be gone

We'll be singing him back home from now on

I have loved and played Merles songs since 1979. The man was well full of songs and every time he dipped that bucket he came out with a HIT!
I cried when 3 men died:
Elvis Presley,,, George Jones,,,,, Merle Haggard.
One by one the lights go out in the world of REAL music.
God only loans the BEST ones to us ,but for awhile, and then He calls them HOME.
RIP
Johnny, Merle, And Waylon. Willie's all we got now.
And Kris too
god bless him while he's with us.
We still have Hank Jr, David Allen Coe, And Willie are the last of the Cowboys.

I love this song. Good job, Willie. Such a wonderful tribute to the best ever. He will never be gone, not as long as we can play his music, which I do every single day. Merle was the best. Thank you Willie for this song. Enjoy your music also.

Hey I been wanting to meet with you since 1770, went to see you in concert with at least 10 other bands!! Baton Rouge, la.....
