  • 45 people died after the bus they were travelling in lost control, plunged off a bridge and then caught fire on the Mamatlakala mountain pass between Mokopane and Marken. They were travelling from Botswana to St Engenas ZCC in Moria for the Easter conference. Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga has sent her condolences to the grieving families and the Botswana government. Chikunga and Limpopo transport MEC Florence Radzilani were scheduled to conduct a road safety operation campaign at the Kranskop Toll Plaza when they received news of the crash.

They do lose control. Driving a bus is nothing like driving that little KIA Picanto of yours. Busses and Trucks are no joke.
And let me remind you that unlike taxi drivers or you KIA drivers, you don't get to just drive a bus or truck after getting your driving license. You need to go get extra professional training for you to be eligible for only a job interview at a transport company. In those interviews you will be tested on your theoretical knowledge of road laws, driving heavy vehicles, and vehicle maintenance. If you pass this test, then you will be taken to a practical on-road test.
Even after getting hired, bus companies do not allow new hires to drive cross border or long routes without having gained experience working in that particular company. Also, unlike a Picanto or Quantum, a bus has to be taken to a roadworthy checkup every 6 months to keep its operating permits.
At the end of the day, you can have the most trained driver and the most well maintained bus, things that defy the odds can still happen (tyre burst on a newly purchased premium brand tyre, brake failure right after passing a roadworthy test, brake overheating on a bus with no retarder or jake brake, special curves called "reducing radius curves", etc).

So you tell me what's more likely, this driver chose to be the first bus driver to willingly speed on a downhill mountain... or something went wrong with the truck (e.g brake overheating) and he failed to control the bus when it reach the curve at the bottom of the steep?
