I was there with my parents (9M) Interesting to see the crowd shots of the kids...nonoplussed throughout until the final score..all the smiles and talking? Of course, we all watched The Lone Ranger and recognized the melody immediately A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty HI-HO Silver AWAYYYYYYY
Not only is that a very young Steve Kates playing Principal; his father David, a longtime violist with the Philharmonic, is centered in the shot at around 3’ 10”.
The English Horn is played by Engelbert Brenner, who was with the orchestra for 48 years, and who was almost always on the English Horn when Bernstein was conducting. I don't know who did the flute or cello solos: Carl Stern was the principal cellist at the time, but that isn't him, nor is the flautist principal John Wummer.

My late beloved friend Stephen Kates is the guest principal cellist.

Only ten years separate the Toscanini/NBC performance and this one. If you have not seen the Toscanini, take the time to view it.

Stephen Kates played earlier on the show and did the opening solo here as well. Wummer is the principal flute.
At first I thought the principal cellist was Laszlo Varga, but I was told he left the orchestra by then.
Enthralling performance. The piece sounds as fresh as I've ever heard it. And Bernstein's baton use ... all in all, magnificent.
Thanks for uploading these concerts!! i heard them in albums but never saw them live..

what young peoples concert is this. is this the same day as the 1812
This was either Episode 22 or 25 (Young Performers 4 or 5). The 1812 Overture was from Episode 20 "The Sound of A Hall"
@@Nyssa337 ok. thx. it was a wonderful surprise to see him conduct 1812. made my day.
An all male orchestra I see.
Different times. To be fair, the harpist was female. No POC either. The Civil Rights Act wasn't even passed yet.

Personally, I judge orchestral performances (past & present) by what I hear, not what I see.
