It might be worthwhile for those of the Calvinist persuasion to recognize that while God's announcement to Rebekah (elder will serve the younger) was made BEFORE the sons had chosen or acted, Paul does NOT assert or even imply that the announcement was made WITHOUT regard to the choices and/or actions of the two sons. Rebekah was not conducting a soteriological inquiry. Paul's point is that God has the right to establish the criteria, the bases of His own choices and designations. He has mercy on whom He will have mercy. And anyone who contends that men cannot and do not know what those criteria are simply ignore the plain teaching of Scripture. Luke 1:50, for example. More than anyone else, the descendants of Jacob should have known.

George, I appreciate you tuning in to watch this sermon. In Romans 9 Paul uses multiple references from the Old Testament to demonstrate God’s sovereign authority of election. He demonstrates this not only in the reference to the election of Jacob rather than Esau and the election of Pharaoh unto wrath, but also in the election of Sarah to give birth to the son of promise (Isaac rather than Ishmael, though both are sons of Abraham).
He uses these references as explicit examples whereby God applies the mercies of His promises by His own choosing. He uses these as proofs in his declaration that God has elected to salvation some from both Jews and Gentiles. All who are elect are brought to salvation by the gracious work of God in the gift of faith and the imputation of righteousness, just as He did when Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him as righteousness.

@@JordanNealRogers one thing at a time. The only way one can assert that faith is a gift is by citing Ephesians 2:8. Not someone familiar with the grammar knows that the pronoun rendered "and THAT not of yourselves," does not agree in gender with either grace or faith from the preceding clause. In Romans Paul says(most of) natural Israel has not obtained because of the absence of faith. But if faith is a gift from God how can He blame them on the one hand for a lack of something only He can provide, and yet on the other hand declare that all day long He has stretched out his hand to a gainsaying and disobedient people? He stretches out his hand of invitation but doesn't provide the necessary responding faith?
Only a calvinist with his ferocious version of God would interpret Romans 9:17 as saying God lifted Pharaoh out from humanity to pour His sovereign wrath upon Him. The Greek word used there to "raise up" refers to upholding someone during his infirmity. God "maintained" Pharaoh with a view to his relenting and repenting so that God could demonstrate his power of mercy and forgiveness, not Wrath. It might be interesting for you to note that throughout Calvin's Institutes he speaks very little about the love of God. Very telling.

@@georgefisher9304, I am well aware of the grammar of Ephesians 2:8. In that passage, both "grace" and "faith" are in the feminine gender, while "this" is in the neuter. The corresponding word to "this" is "gift" in the final clause of the verse. Both "grace" and "faith" are the gift of God. The neuter is used for "this" and "gift" with the nearest antecedent referent being "faith" and the next nearest "grace." Both grace and faith are the gift of God, and man is incapable of producing or soliciting either. I stand by that exegesis.
Further, if you are insinuating that I believe God to be cruel, that is utterly false and slanderous. God does not punish anyone undeservedly. His righteous wrath is reserved for all mankind (Rom.1:18), for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom.3:23) and are only justified by His grace as a gift through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus (Rom.3:24).
Nowhere in Exodus nor in Romans does the Word of God teach that God "maintained" Pharaoh with the intention being Pharaoh's repentance. The passage Paul quotes in Romans 9:17 concerning Pharaoh is Exodus 9:16. Not only is the entire record of Exodus on this clear, but the very context of the original citation is crystal clear. The LORD Himself tells us His only intention in keeping Pharaoh alive was to demonstrate His power so that His holy name may be proclaimed in the all the earth. "For by now I could have put out my hand and struck you and your people with pestilence, and you would have been cut off from the earth. 16 But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth" (Ex 9:15-16).
Lastly, you seem to have the impression that I am in some way contending for Calvin. I have not read Calvin's Institutes, nor have I ever sought to defend a man's theology. Every sermon I preach is backed by a painstaking amount of preparation in the original languages and careful exegesis. I spend an overwhelming amount of time dealing the Text being studied and making sure to search the entire Bible to insure my interpretation and application is correct.
I would invite you to watch each sermon in my series through every verse in Romans and to watch also the sermons preached thus far in my ongoing series through Exodus. Those sermons will all be helpful to you if you are interested in using them for your edification.

@@JordanNealRogers---thank you sir. The person writing you here assumes that you and l are Calvinist just because we honor God's absolute sovereignty. It truly is ungodly how obsessed so many are with calvin. God receives all the glory and He will not share HIS glory with another
