MGM did not do anything to Judy Garland. The issue is what MGM did NOT do. Garland's mother was the first person who introduced her to pills years before Judy came to MGM. This pill issue was already in place after she came to MGM and started down the path to stardom. Yes, MGM was a maker of stars as commodities. Was Judy Garland going to be an exception to being treated as a commodity? Hell no!! Being a commodity was one of the prices paid for fame regardless of whoever the star was. This was the studio system way at all the major studios. What MGM did not do is get Judy Garland the professional help she needed at a very young age after she came to the studio. Also, her mother and whoever else outside the studio were not taking any initiative to get the girl the professional help she needed . In this regard, both her mother and MGM had underlying motives which were harmful to Judy as a person. Money was definitely the major factor!! During the filming of Meet Me in St. Louis Judy Garland was sitting at a table in the studio commissary with some other adult actresses when Margaret O'Brien walked in. The other adults at Garland's table started talking about the special life O'Brien must have been living as a Hollywood star. Garland nearly went ballistic since the age difference between her and O'Brien meant that that law would no longer allow Hollywood to do to a child like O'Brien what it had done to Garland when she was a child. But, it wasn't just the law that made a difference. Shirley Temple worked for Warner Brothers and was always treated well by the studio and was never seen as a cash cow by her parents the way Garland was.
Shirley Temple's parents were the exception when Shirley became famous. They were handling Shirley's earnings in an appropriate manner. Shirley was treated very well at 20th Century-Fox. Judy Garland was 12/13 by the time she came to MGM. Judy was already a veteran vaudevillian by that time, and Ethel Gumm, her mother, had already introduced her to the pill issues. I would have preferred hearing these comments coming from Mickey Rooney, not having the Narrator repeat what Rooney said in past interviews. Also, the editing is terrible with confused, out of timeline order and not supporting the narration. I really wish that TH-cam had standards for video postings, especially since thousands of viewers are attracted to the subject matter, but are given badly produced videos, many with misleading content. But the inevitable question has been why they didn't marry. But they were both affected by the pressures and the "pep pills," or "vitamin shots" MGM gave them. What is appalling is that all of this was going on without controls. Had they both had agents to control what the studio could do with them, things might have been different. There was no need for MGM to abuse them they way they did. And being so important to the studio, they were in the best position to negotiate in their mutual best interests, particularly since their salaries were not proportionate to their value. But getting back to the subject, we never really learned the "shocking truth." All of this information has been revealed before. Just another Click Bait for a mediocre video.

But of course that could be said for many of us I guess. This video, while entertaining, was just click bait!
It is obvious none of you have read June Allyson’s autobiography, like I have; although it is mostly about June, and Richard (Dick Powell )only a few tidbits about Judy. But she revealed, around 1950, Judy confided to June, that if Mickey then had proposed marriage to her, she would’ve married him, in a second !!! And she confided to June again, later in 1960, that if Mickey proposed to her, again, she would still would marry him in a second !!! And YES, I read Mickey’s autobiography too; he said he will always see her as a sister … In later years he thought of opening a dance studio so he and Judy would teach young hopefuls how to dance … why didn’t this video mention that? 🤨
That's not Judy in the speedboat with Mickey, regardless she worked hard for MGM but they exploited her & wore her out & yes they made great movies together as Andy Hardy & Betsy Booth. Forever Dorothy of course but she was wonderful in everything like The Clock, Meet Me In St.Louis, The Pirate & I Could Go On Singing just to name a few & Oz of course. She was too good for MGM tho she made them heaps of money. Should have won for A Star Is Born or at least tied with Grace Kelly. Oh geez she was a tough lady married 5 times & bearing 3 children, don't know how she found the time but she left behind a memorable volume of work including concerts & radio shows not just films. So sad that the drugs aged & killed her at a young 47. She had SO much more to give us but she definitely needed a break. She'll never be forgotten & TWOO is always shown somewhere around the world. Mickey certainly outlived her dying in 2014 at 93.
Hollywood and its push for the almighty dollar taking with it so many talents that have been their victims. RIP. Judy. Karma to those evil entities that took part in harming her
Lorna has said she thought her mom may have suffered from bipolar disorder and of course everything mentioned here and things not mentioned which includes sexual abuse her dad being a closeted homosexual who was run out of town in a scandal involving a teenage boy. Judy in turn married two gay men herself as did Liza! Both she and Liza have had terrible struggles with mental issues and addiction. It seems the greater artists suffer greatly, think Janis Joplin for example. Great actors as well! So many greats have had the same tragic experiences but not starting in childhood.

I will say that Mickey Rooney was lucky because of his shortness, his talent overcame his height.
These bio's are so damned wordy.
It is obvious none of you have read June Allyson’s autobiography, like I have; although it is mostly about June, and Richard (Dick Powell )only a few tidbits about Judy.
But she revealed, around 1950, Judy confided to June, that if Mickey then had proposed
marriage to her, she would’ve married him, in a second !!!
And she confided to June again, later in 1960, that if Mickey proposed to her, again, she would still would marry him in a second !!!
And YES, I read Mickey’s autobiography too; he said he will always see her as a sister …
In later years he thought of opening a dance studio so he and Judy would teach young
hopefuls how to dance … why didn’t this video mention that? 🤨
The vodka and valiums did judy in
The autopsy after death revealed no sighs of alcohol abuse ... it was the get me going, settle me down pills that ended her life ...
Judy was born and raised in Minesota, not Iowa.
Another someone reveals something about someone else but be we get a history lesson and nothing else
She wasn't from Iowa. Google it.
What happened with the sisters?
Mickey certainly outlived her dying in 2014 at 93.

the gums sisters are from Minnestoa

"A small town in IOWA?!" Please get your facts straight.
Sounds like tommy lasorda
