Before the Frost come Here in Michigan I cut mines back, bury the corm & root system deeper, cover it up with leaves or mulch…They triple in size every year!
I've been wondering about that, im in zone 7b and yet they come back smaller each year. Last year only growing to like 4 inches tall , from 6 ft tall. I must not be burying them deep enough.
I'm so glad you did this video, Devin! I've overwintered my giant elephant ears in the ground for the past four years. Now, I need to dig them up and separate them because they're getting so crowded. Now, I know what to do thanks to someone I trust. Thanks again for all your informative videos. Oh, and you're rocking the new hair! Looks good!
@@ivettesantana4319 they weren’t that full in the winter but I had a grow light on them and this spring they really took off and with the humidity they got burnt
Here in Oklahoma. Just let in the ground and they will be back every year. Be cautious about not well drained soil. They will die if water not drained.
So helpful! Question-if you are trying to keep moisture out of the bulbs by allowing them to dry thoroughly, why would you spitz them with water once a week?
Only been doing it a few years, but, I will wait til after the first light frost, take all the dirt and roots off, dry them up in the garage for a week and, then put them in the basement, covered in paper bags, until around Memorial Day (live twelve miles south of Philadelphia). They are multiplying.
I just rescued some from a neighbor, but he’d already cut off the roots. Is it possible to overwinter just the corms? Are the instructions any different?
Hey, do i need to cut back an indoor elefant ear for winter in the same way? I recently got an elefant ear cutting. In 4 weeks it has tripled in size, grew 2 new branches. i keep it indoors and in a vase of water and it seems really happy. I want to transfer it to a big tranparent glass jug filled with water put a grow light on it during winter. Temprature in my house will drop to about 14 - 17 c or 57 - 62 F ( heating is expensive due war / cost of living )
I am in zone 6b as well near Harrisburg, PA. I potted up my outdoor elephant ear and it's doing really well. Several new big leaves have shot up. I have it in an east window and make sure to keep it moist. It was inside all last winter and looked pretty straggly by April but came back to be a huge, robust outdoor plant this past summer.
If you are growing the Colocasia esculenta they should be able to overwinter in your garden in zone 7! and yes i do, here is the link: th-cam.com/video/O2Z-3P-YlDw/w-d-xo.html
Hi Devin, some of mine are still planted in pots outside, and my area (Buffalo) had an intense snow storm last week. Do you think that it’s too late to store the bulbs?
i saw how crazy that storm was! the snow may have in fact insulated the bulbs. the real threat is cold temperatures. i'd recommend digging them up and if they're still firm then they should be alright
@@plantvibrations Thank You, I’ll grab them today. One of my plants dates well over a century (maybe several centuries), it belonged to my Grandmother who lived in the southern part of the country. My aunts removed bulbs, to propagate and shared with family members in the northern cities. The main plant I grow indoors, but this year I divided it & planted a couple of outdoors. I appreciate your help, Happy Holidays Devin!
I have a elephant ear that is over 3 feet long. It gets linger every year. It is getting hard to plant it 3 feet deep. Can I cut it into sections or not plant it so deep? If I leave it sticking out of the ground will it be OK?
Hello Devin I find your video very interesting & helpful & Thsnk You . I live in Fontana it does get very cold & very seldom snows . My daughter loves her elephant ears would it be possible to up root & put inside in a large planter ?
Hi Devin- Fan here. What to do if my Elephant Ear has sprouts growing out of it? I noticed yours did in this video, but they're not mentioned and gone when you went inside to cure the corm.
I am new to this plant and I just got a specimen from a local hobbyist farmer, it was harvested from a location right on a local creek's shore, directly from the ground, and I want to try and pot it up for indoor cosmetic usage. It happens that something is not right with it, the leaves lack stiffness, and they are very soft and droopy, they don't stay open at all, some of them I figure might be young, although they are already wider than my hand, but they are all floppy and curled in. The cutting was taken including roots and all, but still, how can I help them spruce up?
It sounds like the most likely reason is that it’s trying to regenerate new roots and cannot yet transfer sufficient water to the leaves. Cut all the leaves back and allow it to start over. The droopy leaves will never regain strength
@@plantvibrations the plant was cut from the ground and handled to me just this morning, it was already like this, but yes, it sure looks like it's starved, even though it was right there beside the creek, can it be that since there were so many of them, this one somehow had stopped getting enough water for some time? Anyway, if I were to cut the leaves, how far down would I do it? It's kinda tall already, a meter or so.
Hi Devin! Would the leaves survive if you had dug them up with the leaves and potted them to bring inside? Also I hope you put those leaves in water inside to enjoy!! 😆
If you get them in the pot immediately they should be fine. My mother in law moved into a new house and there was the biggest elephant ear plants I have ever seen growing behind and out from under the air conditioner. It HAD to be moved ASAP. I dug it out. It had started as one bulb and spread to an area that ended up being over a foot and a half wide. We split them and moved them. I took some and she kept some. Mine didn't skip a beat. No wilting or anything. Now, they're huge. This all took place about a month ago. I don't know if this is normal, but I would assume it's not out of the ordinary because I didn't do anything special when transplanting them. I also have one that grew from a bulb and it has I don't know how many off shoots from it now. Now, I'm debating on whether or not I want to try and find a few large pots and bring them in or cut them down and winterize the tubers. I'm not totally sure how I want to split them up if I end up winterizing some and bringing some in this fall.
@@plantvibrations ok, don’t judge. I put the whole pot under the house where it is warm, well this is an experiment I put a big banana tree under there and it was white when I took it out and the leaves turned green after a couple of days. So I will let you know how this turn out Lol!

You want them to stay dry but not shrivel! Think of a potato that you’ve had on the shelf for too long
It’s very tasty 😋 especially the tubers ❤

Any suggestions on flowering elephant ear plants? I've read cut them to give the main leaves nutrients. Thanks for the video
I think the main thing is to grow them outdoors year round and it’ll happen naturally

You can try! They may not grow much without great grow lights but even if they don’t they’ll survive till the following spring in that manner
If you live in fontana California just leave them outside. Theyll grow back next year. When pups grow, put them in pots so you can have one inside
I was told your suppose to use fungicide on bulbs to keep mold off. Yes or no?
that can definitely be helpful
So, you keep them in your garage? Not too cold?
Yes in my garage. It stays above 40 which is necessary
Thankyou for your vids 🙏. I'm curious of your age?Wondering the age benefits of everything you recommend.
I was born in 1989!
Hello, why not bring that beautiful healthy plant inside until spring?
You totally can. I don’t have enough room
What are the other plants you have in those pots in the foreground at the end of the video?
Hi, those are my overwintering Agapanthus!
Great ears in 6b! Any plan for next year yet? More in ground? Or containers?
I think ill plant more in the ground next year!!
Hi Devin- Fan here. What to do if my Elephant Ear has sprouts growing out of it? I noticed yours did in this video, but they're not mentioned and gone when you went inside to cure the corm.
It is best to cut them off
Why? Do they drain the mother plant from energy to make bigger leaves?@@plantvibrations
