I love this game so much. I remember all of the hype back then leading up to the release, and I actually got it for Christmas the year it came out. I couldn't believe it. It wasn't real often that we actually got stuff we asked for for Christmas...but we were always surprised, happy and grateful. Santa did good that year, and this game totally delivered. It is hands-down one of the best games on the NES...probably in my personal top 3. I have no idea how many hours I put into it. It was apparently enough to burn that music into my brain for the next few decades. I still have our old NES as well as the original cartridge we got back then. Good times!
It has been so many years since i last played this game until my micro genius spoil . I never EVER GET to this last stage and see the ending after the Bowser fight. I played so many hours back in the day but never ever get this far in the game. The Super mario movie is gonna be release soon this coming April. I hope it is good and hopefully a trip down back to memory lane ...the good old times.
@frank schuler me too ..i feel the exact same way after all these years. Most of the music in this game still lingers in my brain till this very day. I am gonna be 38 this coming November. Time sure flies..... the 90s will NEVER EVER be forgotten in my memories.
@@kentang1528 I'll be 47 this year!! I can't believe it! I started out on the Atari 2600 in 1980 and went through most every major game console released over the course of the following 20 years. It is so nuts. And, it's crazy to think about how much things have advanced during that time.
Same here, actually. I was five years old when I got this game for Christmas. My cousins and I would play World 5 the most. I guess it’s because we liked going from the ground to the sky. It felt like a big victory when I lured Bowser into falling down and the music is one of my favorite songs for an ending. Also, the ending message is not the same as in the Japanese version that basically said, “Peace has returned to the Mushroom Kingdom.”
I remember the first time I saved the princess in this game, I paused the game and called my Mum and Dad up, and said that I have just completed Super Mario Bros 3. when "But our princess is in another castle" I had my hands in my eyes and couldn't believe what I was reading, suddenly I heard a big "YEEESSSS" from my parents, I looked into the TV and saw "just kidding". wonderful times, I was given Super Mario Bros 3 after I rescued the princess in the first game, but sadly I never got another free game after I mastered the third one.
The theme that plays at 1:52 seems to have inspired Mario 64's "Peach's Castle" theme (particularly the second part of that theme, the first 4 notes are identical).

I played it numerous times when we got it just days after it was released and the farthest I ever got was to World 5. And that only happened on 2 occasions. To be honest I've always been kind of a mediocre player at this game and maybe fair at SMB 2 since I'd gotten as far as World 5 on that one. If you jump or fall down the hole left by Bowser, does Mario/Luigi die as well? I just mastered Super Mario Bros. 3 this morning after first playing it during the early 90s. I couldn’t bring myself to jump down the 🕳️ after four days of solid play to finish it.
That's so true, and it's even funnier seeing how in some games, he's an evil genius who says he has an IQ of 1,080, and in others, he needs someone to tell him that there needs to be a world in order for him to conquer it. X3

I've got a working NES still, this game included. Curious as to how you recorded from it as there are no obvious ports that work with today's components. I remember Battletoads very fondly... And likewise, i also remember the 4th level with those god-damn hover bikes, walls, and humongous jumps that left you cursing but coming back for more. Ah, memories. =)
I saw on nesmaps that there are two bowser bosses in this last castle. You need to access a different door to get the other one. Not sure why there are two bowsers. nesmaps.com/maps/SuperMarioBrothers3/SuperMarioBros3Map8BowsersCastle.html
I hope the Princess's message is directed toward the audience and not Mario, otherwise it would be a bit awkward... "Thank you for rescuing me! Okay you can go now..."
When the costumes and tools in the game were earned through hard work, and if you wanted to advance further it was through sweat, death after death. Nowadays they are purely gift cards.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is a really great game, probably the best on the NES(in my opinion), but to be honest, the ending was kinda underwhelming. Great game though!
