This sounds so awful. I'm emetophobic so this is one of my worst nightmares. Everyone suffering with this, you're all incredible and I hope you can find the best solution to help you with managing your condition. All the love to you!
I have the vomiting and I can tell you it’s awful and so unpredictable. You can go to a restaurant and all seems fine but while you eat you feel cold and warm sweeting and hardcore vomiting
I’m 14 and just diagnosed I vomit for 6-10 times per hour for and average of 20 straight hours and physically can’t do anything, I thought it was normal to throw up that much and never knew that the average person throws up from 0-10 times per year when I do 500, definetly not normal, takes me a week to recover, thanks for the video.
This hurts so bad. It's pure torture at its worst when not managed. The pain and the fear all together are just so painful it's almost funny... Thank you so much for making this video..
Thank you so much for bringing this debilitating illness to light, so that more physicians become aware. My husband has been dealing with this for the past 8 years, so this hits home for me. Keep up the great work.
I was diagnosed with cvs about a year ago, my doctor said that it could have been caused because of hormonal changes, stress or anxiety. It started at around the time that I got my first period, when I had just turned 10, however this was also around the time that I had a big test. If you also have cvs, I just want you to know you’re not alone and there are other people, like me, with it.
My throat had lump through the whole video. Thank you, thank you, for expressing to the world this awful disease. As mentioned above, the sharing made me feel less lonely and now more able to express myself to people.
I'm 43...had my 1st episode at 18....took 4 years to get diagnosed....I get an episode at least once...usually more like 2 to 3 a year....I remember trying to describe to the e.r what was happening....and how only a shower would make me feel better ...until I would get out then immediately start puking again.....the fear I have when I know it's coming on is pure torture....Phenergan burns so bad when they put it in my arm.....then let's be honest....promethazine suppositories.....and Zofran....all I want is to sleep.....then I start goin crazy from lack of. I'm am so glad I'm not alone. But feel for all of us who suffer from this......
Hey, if you can try it, when I have an attack I found that you can actually prevent yourself from throwing up. I keep water in my mouth, take very very strong mints and drink lots of water. Dry food in the mouth works too. And migraine medicine can help in the beginning by lessening the attack. I usually like don't move and just take sips of water keeping it in my mouth swallowing only when you need too
@@FizaKhan-eq7vi it was my doctor at the hospital who saw the signs and symptoms. Other doctors were quick to say it was my gallbladder (it wasn’t) or cannabis (not it either). I’ve had friends through an online support group go years without a proper diagnosis because doctors don’t want to believe that adults can get this too. I hope you find relief and a doctor who sees your suffering clearly soon, my friend. Amitriptyline helped me out A LOT and maybe ask your doc for it?
@@FizaKhan-eq7vi i am also diagnosed with CVs and in my case it's tension and anxiety which is at severe level. I vomit about 5 to 20 times in 24 hour's when the cycle comes. I hope it will help you in diagnosing your issue
I suffer from this condition. It is highly stressful! I first experienced this in 2004 during a vacation, and I have still to achieve symptom control 100% of the time. I often have to go to the emergency room for IV hydration and pain control. Occasionally I even get treated as a "drug seeker", because opioids are required to treat my pain, and most medications either don't work or I have adverse effects. When you're waiting for the doctor's schedule, and attacks still happen, I run out of ideas on what to do. Glad that there are at least a couple of people on my side!
I struggled for so many years being giving different diagnosis until finally I was diagnosed with cvs. It is a really rough illness especially when I’m such an active person and when I have these episodes I become so depressed. I’ve never met anyone who else suffers from this so it’s nice to see there’s videos online.
I appreciate this video so much! It shed so much light on this disease. I'm having an episode and someone recommended this video. The nausea and vomiting is so severe I can't get out of bed or have the lights on. I go through 3 episodes of vomiting and after the third episode, it's like I never was sick. But during the episodes, it's unbearable. I've been dealing with this for the passed year. At first it felt like death now I'm used to it. I know when it's starting and how long it will last. To anyone suffering from CVS, my advice well what helps me is drinking plenty of water, I'm in no way a health professional but it helps ease the vomiting process for me. I hope that helps and I wish everyone the best in dealing with this. Peace!
@@keeliesterling2630 I've since made major changes to my diet and sleeping routines. I've definitely seen improvements. I'd advise anyone who suffers from this to research different foods to avoid and exercise more. 😊
I’ve had cvs since 2016 when I was 15, it’s been a long journey but I’m thankful to say that it does get easier with learning to manage episodes. I haven’t thrown up from one since 2017. Just know that it does get better with time and learning how to deal with these episodes.
Hey my bf has cvs n we need help as to how to control it he will just wake up use the bathroom n strts feeling bad. He cant eat or drink water without him having a episode and it’s getting frustrated fr him
My sons CVS was finally SOLVED! 🙏 It’s completely healed now. It was not a stomach disorder like his gastroenterologist thought. Instead, by a fluke, at a new ER, they ran more tests and after imaging his kidneys they found a polyp in his ureter (the tube leading from his kidney to his bladder) that would occasionally block the flow of urine, where it would build up in his kidney and cause excruciating stomach pain (really it was kidney pain that he felt in his stomach) and vomiting. The polyp was removed and he has never had a single episode now in years! I know this may not solve everyone’s CVS, but I hope it will point some of you toward other potential downstream organs, not just the gastro region.
10 years of going through CVS can really burn you out in so many ways. I worked for 7 years and the last 3 years have finally caught up to me where I just cant work anymore, Iv had hospitals accuse me of being a drug addict only to test me and find out I'm clean. I'v had doctors accuse me of being lazy and not wanting to try medicines they dish out by the handfuls only to put me back in the hospital. family members thinking I'm making my sickness up, if one thing this does is completely ware and break you down from constant pain and throwing up, severe anxiety going out in public in fear of having an attack in front of someone is completely embarrassing. I've put my life on hold entirely because of this and just recently have I been able to manage some of the pain with CoQ-10 and amitriptyline. attack still happen and weight loss is always happening. At 18 I was 155 healthy as a lark and I started puking everyday to the point where my pancreas was eating itself and I had to be hospitalized for a week. Now Im 28 and 105 pounds. Years have flown and the pain has barely subsided, I wish this on no one. I now smoke a shit ton a weed and take my meds which helps keep me out of the hospital, I still have attacks and some damn near close attacks that bring me back, but a hot shower and fluids, also watching what you eat and how much you eat at once will also help save you from an attack, greasy foods are a huge trigger for me and processed foods.
I have delt with this since I was 12 years old. I am 28 now and it is not a good life. I want to be healthy for my wife and children but it is the most miserable thing I have expierence. Everything in this video is spot on including the time frames.
Thank you very much. My daughter (18 years) is suffering from the same. in addition, it comes with uncontrolled shivering. please comment on the shivering issue if possible.
Hi, I hope you are having a fab day! I have this and I get really bad shakes/shivers that are uncontrollable! These normally pass before any other symptom does and unfortunately there isn't much I can do to stop, except sitting in a dark room and waiting for it to pass.
Hi. I'm Bobbie. I am now 38, but I have had CVS since I was 5, but it got a lot worse when I turned 12 and got my monthly (although irregular) menses cycle. I used to go to the hospital from 12 to around 30 years old... then they started calling me a "drug seeker" & saying that I am "red flagged" for "asking for pain meds" when they are the ones who would shoot me up with Promethazine & Dilaudid for decades, & basically comatose me until the cycle of vomiting & pain completely stops! So now I suffer at home in my own bathtub, & NEVER go to the ER again. I cannot run scalding hot water over my entire torso in an ER... so now I stay home & unfortunately stress my entire family (& neighborhood) all the way the heck out! The pain is indescribable & severely excruciating for me!!! It feels like a constant lava flow up & down my esophagus & the back & abdominal pain in pure torture!!! I just now got through the vomiting phase of my CVS episode this evening. This time I thought I WAS TRULY GOING TO DIE!!! This episode lasted 6 days -- but my longest one lasted 17 days (& then for 4 months during a pregnancy). My problem is... It is so painful that it makes me do things that I DO NOT want to be doing. Since EXTREMELY HOT HOT HOT water is the ONLY thing to help the pain subside just enough to make it less painful to talk & breathe. So when my hot water runs out, I grab a robe & a towel & ask my neighbor to use their bath tub... However, when my neighbor is not home or available I literally knock on strangers doors to ask to use their bathtub (using the excuse that my pipes are frozen, or my hot water heater is broken. SMH!) But it sucks b/c I know how dangerous it can be, plus just inappropriate altogether... the terrifying thing is that I literally cannot stop myself from doing it, even if I know that 99.99% of the time their answer is NO, or that I could be raped or killed, or even arrested! I cannot make myself not do it when I am in that much pain. It is like something else takes over. idk. But when I am in that amount of pain from my CVS I am willing to do ANYTHING to make it go away! If I thought that wallowing in a mud puddle would lessen the pain, I would do that! I really need help & some better docs. 😢
I feel you ❤ I've had this since 2001 and was only diagnosed in 2016 I've had it for 23 years now and coming on here and reading the comments makes me feel not alone .... Thanks for sharing. 🙏
I been having cvs since I was 22 now im 35. For almost 3 years I was in the er every month when it first started but i didnt smoke weed i started after when i noticed symptom relief and could keep food down. At one point I had the episode all month it was horrible. But now I'm able to manage it. I pray for all you who think or are sufferering this affliction. Remember how strong you are for this pain tolerance not anybody could.
In between episodes, you should avoid eating foods that may have triggered past episodes. Eating certain foods such as chocolate, cheese, and foods with monosodium glutamate (MSG), may trigger an episode in some people. 👍
thank you so much for bringing light to this awful disease… i finally just got diagnosed with CVS and even though it’s been one of the hardest things i’ve ever had to deal with-it’s just that much easier to cope being able to have a diagnosis from my doctors. i’ve been dealing with this since i was 16 where it would last for a week or so and happen every couple months (2/3 months) cut to me now, turning 22 and getting sick every other week or so for about 4-7 days give or take. i can only sleep and puke away the pain… i can’t move, eat, or do anything and it’s paralyzing. it helps to go to the hospital and get on IV fluids and meds but i can’t even get the energy to get up and go there… hell, i can’t even sit up. a lot more doctors need to become aware of it because for so long i wasn’t given the proper help that i needed bc “i was a kid, kids get sick.” or “i’m making it up” or “i have an eating disorder” like ????? first of all no, but second of all if that were the case then maybe look into it???!! idk CVS honestly just sucks so much…
OMG! The people that think you're exaggerating or trying to make it looks worse than it is 🖕🖕🖕 those people & I wish they had to go thru it, even just once, for an entire week! Every symptom, not just throwing up, it's SO much more than that! They have NO IDEA the sheer torture we go thru!! I literally want to die every time this happens! I would do almost anything to never have it happen ever again!! No cure 😭😭😭
@@sweetmissypetuniawilson9206 it could absolutely be cannabis hyperemesis syndrome if you do smoke weed. Try quitting if your mentally able to, it's alot better life not smoking and not getting sick.
I cannot find proper help for this, and I KNOW it's what is going on. It has been occurring since I was 22. I am now 37. It has went several years without occurring, but, it always happens again. I have been hospitalized multiple times, resorted to the ER MANY times... and I just keep being given treatment for my anxiety. It's more than that!!! It feels like the scenes in old movies where they heat a pot and put a rat on someone's belly under it. That torture thing. It is sheer misery. The nausea is so SO severe, I just live in my bathtub in raging hot water for days, even a week at a time. The longest episode I have ever had was 12 days. 12 days!! Terrible. Thank you for this video and the hope it brings that someone with knowledge on the matter is speaking about it!! It's the scariest thing to be in an episode.
I'm sorry to hear about what you've been experiencing. My best advice is to directly tell your primary care doctor that you think you might have cyclic vomiting syndrome - don't assume they'll be able to recognize the disorder from your symptoms. Some doctors have not even heard of CVS. If you live near a medium-large city or are otherwise close to an academic medical center, you can ask to be referred to a Functional GI Clinic (a.k.a. GI Motility Clinic) which specializes in the treatment of diseases like CVS (along with other challenging diagnoses like IBS and gastroparesis). Unfortunately, most rural areas (at least in the US) don't have healthcare professionals who specialize in CVS treatment.
I have been suffering with this exact thing for 20years... yes, it has been that long. Test after test. 3 to 4 ER stays each year, because of the extreme vomiting and by now I know when I'm dehydrated and need to go to the hospital. I live in a small country area with small hospitals and yes they are kind and do what they can but I've been to counciling bc of this, seen lots of Drs and no one has told me what they think I have or what could be wrong. I have had great jobs after I graduated. But I have always had to end up leaving that job because about once a month, i would get soo extremely sick for about a week, I could not be dependable. Which was so embarrassing yet, I couldn't and can not control the sickness. I am desperately needing help. From researching on my own, for a long time, i came across CVS. It sounds like MY issue in almost EVERY way. Besides the obvious through up episodes, it struck me was the hot baths for relief. I have been doing that since this start. Sometimes 5 in a day, in-between throwing up, just to get a bit of relief. I do suffer from severe anxiety and I do feel that plays a part in this but, there are soo many times I will feel fine yet an episode happen and there will be nothing I can do to stop or control it. I have had some Drs listen but just give me nausea meds. Theyve done tests and same tests yet still do not know. When I am having an episode, I sometimes feel so out of it because I haven't slept, eaten, drank and can't get up to even do personal things. I am writing all of this because I truly have been going through this for soo soo long. I don't nor does my family have much money to send me to a big city clinic. My Dr said he'd give me referral to Cleveland clinic in Ohio because he truly does not know what is going on with my body. I appreciate these comments, knowing I am not alone. I appreciate the Drs who make these videos and take time to study what this is. After all these years and all I have looked over, I feel that CVS is something I have or close to it because its what ive read that sounds so much like what i am going through. I hope I can get a Dr that knows something about it sometime soon and i can get some relief or at least a diagnosis so i can say " this is what i have...this is the name of the disorder i have of why i get sick so much". It truly is a tough thing to live with. I try so much to be positive. I would just love an answer. It has and is effecting my daily life. Please if anyone took time to read this and has any info or advice, please let me know. Best wishes to all of you💛 my email is different than it says here... it is emilybrooke032@gmail.com 🤞🏻🙂 Take care all!!
Is there any chance you smoke weed? I smoked quite a bit and dealt with the same symptoms for 5-10 years and stopped within the last year, haven't had a single episode since and was having them 1-2 times monthly, if I was super lucky I'd go almost 2 months before it happened
I had this for 26 years of my life... Every month... I used vomiting even 10 times per a night... Psychotherapy helped me but actually stopping eating tomatoes was the final solution!
Wow tomatoes was the trigger! That’s interesting! I have cvs monthly as well currently on my last day of feeling weak and bed bound I get my cvs episodes on my menstrual cycle total hell
@@kenyakuznof7650 i feel you i have had this for 7 years and im 14 i finally just figured out i have this and it helps so much knowing i don’t just need to go on another “diet” i feel so alone in this and it give me so much anxiety as a 14 year old not wanting to have this at friends houses or in front of everyone
It’s a shitty condition when undiagnosed. I went through a particularly rough military school while having its onset in my early twenties. I was fortunate enough to have an Air Force doctor do a correct diagnosis and now live mostly symptom free from his prescription.
@@lily34729hsbdkabss I was prescribed a very low dose of amitriptyline and have had now almost 2 1/2 years of normal living. Every now and then I get a small flare up of nausea but I’m in the military so I sometimes eat bad food because the dining facilities don’t always serve quality or necessarily healthy food. But other than that it’s been a night/day difference for me
Wow. I thought my migraines that cause gastric stasis, where I _might_ vomit once depending on how bad and prolonged the pain is, were bad. I'm so sorry to anyone with CVS.
I've had it diagnosed for the last 12 years. My only relief comes from zofran and occasionally phenogran, when I don't have to life, and drinking plenty of water.
I’m going through an attack right now. I have severe CVS- I’m in the hospital currently. I’m on day 14. I’m in so much pain- I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.
Wow. glad light is being brought to this. i struggled with cvs when i was 3-5 years old but i was never diagnosed. i had a 9 year break in symptoms and in the past year i have had severe cvs. my first episode was so painful the er doctor thought i had internal organ damage. i believe my symptoms may have been caused by stress and fasting. i am a wrestler so sometimes i couldn’t eat for a day to lose weight. now after diagnosis and treatment i am much better and i havnt had an episode in months.
No cannabis use. No typical migraines, but violent chronic coughing provoking regurgitation/vomiting. Wheezing, weakness, and fatigue. I'm a 67-year-old woman and this just came on 8 months ago. An ENT prescribed GERD medication which hasn't helped. Very frustrating.
80% of people with this have migraines it is still very possible you could have this condition you should get it checked out and maybe get the proper treatment
I know a lot of people who use cannabis heavily, and many of them feel so nauseous if they don’t smoke. I’m not surprised heavy use can lead to cannabis hyperemesis syndrome. It must be awful for people who use cannabis for symptom relief and then develop this after prolonged heavy use.
See I thought the same so I went clean for a month or so and it didn’t even help so yeah weed is the only thing that can help me stop an episode so I can’t even get a job if I wanted to everyone drug test now so yeah I’m fucked either way I hope you guys are doing better tho remember we aren’t alone!🥰
@@autumnterrell4062 right there with you. This shit is hell. My insane anxiety is definitely a trigger for me, and I wake up nauseous a lot. I started smoking weed to relieve the nausea. It helps my nausea. Everyone keeps telling me it’s the weed- the vomiting started long before the weed. The worst thing about CVS, other than feeling like you’re on death’s door, is how everyone who has it experiences different triggers, symptoms, and reactions to therapies. I wish us all the best of luck with this nightmare
It sucks. I have chronic RA so I take my meds and smoke weed for the pain. But now I’ve been having CVS for the past 3-4 years. Going to have to quit smoking and see if that’s the cause.
I've been having constant vomiting for almost a year now. If I don't take Zofran I just keep on vomiting. Every single day. My doctor says it's phycological, a "specialist" says it's IBS, she gave me IBS meds and tells me each appointment that we should wait and see a little bit longer (I'm at her office every 3 months). Im 25 and I'm terrified of leaving my house because of that. Idk if what I'm suffering from is CVS but either way it's hell ☹️
I'm sorry to hear what you've been going through. I generally can't give specific, individualized medical advice, but if you are experiencing vomiting every single day, or nearly every day, your diagnosis is not CVS by current diagnostic criteria. I have another video on the causes and evaluation of chronic nausea and vomiting that might be helpful: th-cam.com/video/Hp09hoaUh14/w-d-xo.html
@@StrongMed OMG thank you so very much!! I'll watch it as soon as I can! I'm really grateful for your reply! 🥰 You've helped so many people here, god bless you!
Wow when I was 13 and doing online school, I’d wake up every morning and have a horrible stomach ache and eventually throw up. This went on for about a month, throwing up on the week days when I had school. It was a horrible experience.
The episode that I had that prompted us to find a diagnosis lasted 10 months and I lost 82 pounds. I literally thought I was going to die. I always just assumed I had a sensitive stomach, as I’ve always had boughts of vomiting for days or even a week since I was little. Surprisingly, what helped me was marijuana (suggested by my therapist at the time because I couldn’t keep anti nausea pills down) If I smoke in the prodome phase I can normally catch it immediately. It also helped me sleep through the night again (as nights were always the worst for me) and it helps with the general pain/nausea. My point: CHS is different than CVS and it wouldn’t have hurt to make that a bit more clear. Good video otherwise 😊 Edit: I forgot to add that I did stop using it for a month to rule it out and I was hospitalized twice.
When I presented with Nausea and abdominal pain in my bowels I was using MJ to reduce the symptoms. When I mentioned this they would only suggest AHS. It took much frustration for them to recognize my Crohn's disease.
@@sweetmissypetuniawilson9206 Unfortunately heat is actually a trigger for me, and I also have pots so steam/ showers makes me feel woozy. Honestly I try to get as cold as possible as that’s what usually helps me deal with the pain easier. (Ice pack on the stomach, being outside, a fan, cold rag for my face, etc) the shivering isn’t fun but I’ll take it over the pain shakes. That being said, it doesn’t always work, but it’s usually the first thing I do when I don’t feel good.

i had a 20 year old male patient which i referred to a gastroenterology specialist after 6 months of vomiting and diagnosed with cvs. a month later he had another vomiting attack and admitted with appendicitis. after the appendectomy he stopped vomiting...
@@sujith2074 like in cvs. it made me rethink on this diagnosis ... maybe a strong plasebo effect can cure it? or maybe he had self limiting recurrent appendicitis (if such thing is even exist ) and not cvs...
You said that, He had six months of vomiting whereas with CVS it is attacks that may include vomiting/fatigue/headache/migraine/illness/“conscious coma”/stomach pain, etc that may last 3-6days then person feels normal again until the next attack which might be a week to seventh months away. The attacks might have different elements, but they usually happen the same for that individual, but another person might have other symptoms.
I finally know what is happening to me!!!! Dr’s just say I'm having recurrent bouts of gastritis and that it's because I eat fatty foods or drink too much alcohol but the foods I eat are random and I can eat them and not get symptoms on other occasions. Plus I rarely drink alcohol. The only link is large social events. And I couldn't figure it out because it happens after I think I've had a good time so it didn't seem like an anxiety problem! This makes sense my mum was just hospitalised with hemiplegic migraine and migraines run on both sides of my family!
i was just diagnosed with this today after at least 10 ER visits from syncope episodes from being unable to keep anything down and being in unbearable pain.
Anyone suffer with cycles of horrific nausea but can’t be sick? My cycles last up to two weeks and I’m totally fine in between. The nausea isn’t just “feeling a bit sick”. It’s EXTREME. The only way I can describe it is as such a severe discomfort that you can’t think straight, you’re lying on the floor squirming and begging for it to end, trying to make yourself sick for relief, and if there was a button to end it all you would press it! No anti emetics work. It’s a living hell.
The fact that I am not alone with this monster makes me feel so much better..as terrible as that sounds. I was very lucky (did early research and had pinpoint symtoms) and just got diagnosed with it after a year. Its horrible, even if I havent had it for very long. My fellow brothers, sisters and nonbinary beauties who also deal with this, stay strong. Anxiety and stress are huge triggers for us, you can do this. You are strong, and you CAN get through this. Your family/friends love you, and I believe in you. Keep fighting, one day you will feel that relief you've been chasing. We will get through this together.
Wow I’ve been suffering from this for almost two years and no one was able to tell me that this is what I have. I am in shock I’ve been in and out of hospital and no one was able to diagnose me with this
I had this occurring to me every three months, and now I get it once or twice a year. I used to have severe dehydration and couldn't stand drinking water and eating for a week.Nousa, vomiting, pain, tiredness, couldn't do number 2 or 1.
Sir, My father vomits after he swallows his food , stomach makes sounds and swallowed food comes out sometimes , what might be problem and what is solution?
It’s BRUTAL. Sick every half an hour until your body just can’t cope. Pains in your stomach and your throat from the acid. The intense nausea and the fear of eating because you think you are going to be sick. I have it and I wish your brother the best 🙏🏻
i was just dignoased (sorry if i didnt spell that right) and this hits hard. today has been a bad day for me, thank you for teaching people who dont know about what we go through weekily, god even daily. i really am grateful for this video. thank you
I have this crap and if anyone can try it, migraine medicine sometimes works, you still feel a little sick but it really, REALLY, helps. Showers and baths in hot water work very very well as well. The idea is to keep yourself from vomiting, you can do this by eating or drinking very strong things like cinnamon Altoids. Keep water in your mouth and don't move very fast at ALL. Surrounding yourself in absolute heat and sweating it off surprisingly works well. It is definitely possible to contain the throwing up with vomiting, I do it all the time and essentially stop myself from throwing up for 2 hours and it really helps my throat and well-being. You can totally stop yourself by doing stuff like this, after all you don't actually need to throw up. Having dry foods in your mouth works too like honestly if you have CVS try any of these
Every doc I have talked to in my life, I have to explain this to. No ones heard of it, I cant even hold down a job, no one believes me. Ive had it my whole life, and now I'm 33. I dont want to wake up anymore. Sedation is all that helps, and sometimes I need illegal means to stop it. The hospital makes me ride it out. It feels so hopeless. And my episodes last up to 3 days, once a week. So more often than not, I am vomiting and have such bad brain fog I cant think, let alone talk.
I'm very sorry to read about your experience. I can't give specific, individualized medical advice here, but having an episode every week would be unusual for CVS. I know it can take forever to get an appointment at one of these clinics, but if you live near a major city in the developed world, I would try to find a GI motility clinic at a university-affiliated academic center. As just one example of such a clinic, here is the website for ours at Stanford: stanfordhealthcare.org/medical-clinics/gastrointestinal-motility-lab.html
I do not have migraines or any pain. After eating, I vomit after a few minutes, and sometimes this vomiting becomes severe. I also feel heaviness in my stomach and lack of appetite. I have been living with these symptoms for the past 5 years. My life has become very stressful because of this, and I am very worried. I have seen many doctors and have taken treatment, especially from gastroenterologists, but I have only received temporary relief, and the problem recurs after some time, even if it gets better for a while. I have undergone many tests such as endoscopy, liver function tests, blood tests, and all, but most of the reports came back normal. The doctors diagnosed me with conditions like gastritis and functional dyspepsia and when I asked the doctor, they said it's not a big problem, but these vomiting episodes have made my life hell. I am very worried. Is it possible that CVS could be confused with another disease like functional dyspepsia or gastritis? Please help me...
You say the best way to treat it is medicate before it really kicks in. I’m so screwed, I’m in hospital again right now as it took calling and emailing the dr everyday for two and a half weeks to book an appointment when all I wanted at the start was anti sickness but they’re so busy I couldn’t get past reception.
Great video! Thankyou for sharing. Is there a name for feeling like vomiting is a relief, and a return to the familiar? I used to vomit daily yet irregularly when smoking a lot of cannabis. Now I practice Zen meditation every other day or two, and use CBT to help manage anxiety, depression and Dyspraxia! lol
Im sorry for everyone who has this Sometimes when I go through it I honestly wish I was dead. Had it for 2 years and it comes and goes. Hot water is the only thing that keeps me alive.
I just want to say being a T1 diabetic and thought I had gastroparesis. I thank God I’m finding out what’s up. I want to add I smoke the dankest of the dank. Aka the shit that killed Elvis. Been smoking weed all my life. And when I’m puking I vape to help with my nausea. Also being a indica smoker it helps with relaxation. I’ve been doing this at home since Covid. I’ve had an episode every month since august. Thank you for this video. But your thing on weed can’t be true for me. I didn’t just start smoking it.
As I sit here puking my guts up I’m catching myself crying more.. this year will make 30 years I have had this.. I’m a fighter tho so I’m holding strong at home.. but I’m so tired.. nothing works unless you can hold some meds down some how.. episodes are getting closer and I wanna give up.. I had the best GI dr but he retired so now I have some weirdo that has no clue what I have.. throw nausea meds at me and I leave.. I was ok yesterday but as the seasons change I usually get sick..
@@christineguven5110 it’s the worst.. I take a lot of meds to help let me know if you wanna know what all I take to try and keep episodes from coming weekly..
I've had CVS for 12 years. It began during pregnancy and I've had hormonal episodes (and then some) just about every month since. Cannabis has always helped me, but I quit for an entire year just to be sure it wasnt a cause and that was probably the worst year of my life. I genuinely believe cannabis helps my nausea and doesnt cause it but so I dunno what to do... I'm literally terrified to try quitting cannabis while employed, even though I'm likely losing my job soon
if it works for you it works for you. cannabis isn't a depressant or addictive, for many people, it's an organic form of medicine. don't feel guilty for doing what works for you. if it makes you feel better SMOKE IT!!!
Same, I've been using cannabis for over 10 years to help with random nausea and recreational use, and find out it may be my main cause for this is absolutely horrible. Prefer to not take any pills or anything but this is unbearable!!! Worst bout yet on day 3.
Idk I have been diagnosed with this but my symptoms are different. I go a couple of months without throwing up then throw up every morning for a couple months then stop for a couple months. I was also diagnosed as a child and it never stopped. It also sucks that no one in my life cares bc it has been going on so long.
I seriously have no idea what the hell is wrong with me. Im tired. August 2020 I woke up randomly just dry heaving, retching and feeling full, burping and it never wanted to go away. Had gallbladder surgery bc it was malfunctioning and was happy to hear I would be back to normal. Nope. Still persisted. The strange thing is I never vomit, just dry heave. I do have chronic gastritis but my dr doesnt think its this bc of how wild I dry heave. It’s like a spasm. Im scared I probably caught covid and caused this bc I felt so strange one month.. dr told me it may be my appendix and showed articles of ppl having hidden appendicitis but surgery resolved. They were diagnosed with cvs prior to surgery but it went away. Fingers crossed. My gym manager has been so scared as he has seen my weight loss. He grows flower marijuana. I’m ready to try. So over this. This isnt gastroparesis bc I dont have any bloating or lower gi issues. It’s just nausea and dry heaving. It’s odd bc cold weather makes me gag. Stepping out from a hot shower to cold as well. It’s always the worst for me in the morning. Afterward? As if nothing happened. I’m even able to sleep through the night
I have CVS diagnosed by ER. But when I took this diagnosis to my Clinician I was told it wasn't a real disease. So I still suffer from the pain almost every day. With a few exceptions.
I'm sorry to hear that. While I can't offer specific, individualized medical advice here, if your primary care provider does not believe in the existence of CVS, you may need to find a new primary care provider.
@@StrongMedMy father vomits after he swallows his food , stomach makes sounds and swallowed food comes out sometimes , sir what could be the cause and how to prevent it?
I got diagnosed with this but I'm throwing up to at least 20 times a day, everyday and have gone from a size 14 to a size 4 and they tube me then take the tube out and now I'm living on liquids only and that still makes me sick.
Wow I’ve been experiencing this every few months right around the time I should be ovulating. I told my PCP’s MA about this and she brushed off with the ol “well hormones can do that to you”. Thankfully my doctor listen to me and due to other likely separate symptoms that are also happening, she referred me back to my neurologist for testing. I wonder if this something I should bring up to him or is there another type of specialist I would need to see?
I got a warning today that they are putting out an ad and filling my position but will try to find a place for me as I've been there for years..... what if I try quitting and it gets worse??? I was unemployed when I quit before so I was the only one suffering as opposed to my business
I thought maybe this was finally the answer but I get sick everyday for spans of 1-3 months. And that sends the dominoes of no longer needing the toilet, dehydration, low in magnesium, potassium esp, sodium, my heart races and my bp drops, I get dizzy and mentally confused and can pass out and I lost 4 stone this time. It’s the best fit I’ve found so far but I’m ill for wayyyy longer
This is literally me down to the cannabis use. I felt so ashamed for my use to help my illness bc it does, then to go to the hospital and they tell me that’s why I’m sick. 😢
What if there if i dont smoke any weed, and i also gwt abdominal pain EVERY TIME i get my nausea and vomiting and wretching. Theres always lots of wretching.? My stomach pain feels like Labor pains like a contraction and i feel compelled to walk around to distract myself. But i want to emphasize i am NOT pregnant.
I have a terrible situation everytimes when im worrying something too much...ill keep feels want to vomit😢...i always think im a weird person😭😭...That day when i have a driving test..i jst almost throw up in tht car and end up failing the test😞...idk its a syndrom or wht...i jst dnt knw how to tell more details to anyone around me
Prescribed THC for it and doctors tell me I am faking it to smoke weed. Currently I am hugging a bucket as a dry heave for hours. Been dealing with it since age 14. Still not diagnosed with it. Been using cannabis as a stabilizer prescribed since age 18. I hate it. It's hell.
Try like 50 times in one hour I literally puked my guts out so many times I'm literally just out of recovery from having too many episodes this year 2022 is insane for me
I appreciate the comment - I think what you've said is a common belief. However, if you look at the actual literature on this, as much as 2/3 of patients with CVS report use of hot showers for symptom relief, and there is an association between marijuana use and a diagnosis of CVS - though the nature of that association is unclear. For example, is it cause and effect (i.e. marijuana use increasing risk of developing CVS) vs. marijuana being used to treat CVS vs. some patients with CHS being misdiagnosed with CVS. Part of the issue here is that, despite CVS and CHS looking like clinically distinct conditions, there is probably shared pathophysiology that we don't yet fully understand. Some relevant references (sorry, they may be behind a paywall): pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24792504/ pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28400711/
Thanks for the comment. The overlap between CHS and CVS is complicated and would require a video of its own to properly cover. We don't even know if these two are distinct diseases, or if they are subtypes of the same primary pathology. In short though, while chronic cannabis use is required for a diagnosis of CHS, that doesn't mean that CVS isn't also associated with it but to lesser extent (i.e. chronic cannabis use appears to be a relatively mild risk factor for developing CVS). Challenges in proving this include the fact that CHS and CVS are often confused for one another, and that many CVS patients use marijuana to treat their symptoms - potentially giving the appearance of a stronger association. A counterargument to this that favors the association is that more CVS patients use marijuana than patients with other diagnoses characterized by chronic vomiting (e.g. gastroparesis, functional vomiting syndrome, etc...), though this could potentially be explained by CVS patients having worse vomiting or experiencing less relief with meds as compared to these other diseases. A nice, open-access review of the complicated and unclear relationship between CHS and CVS: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/nmo.13606 EDIT: I'll add that I've seen patients with CVS who have sworn that cannabis helps their symptoms - the linked article briefly talks about this contradiction: that cannabis increases the risk of CVS, while also having anecdotal reports that it brings relief. This suggests the heterogeneous nature of the condition, including possible unknown genetic factors that determine how people's body respond to cannabis exposure.
I have been living with this condition for roughly 23 years now and have never been correctly diagnosed. Finding this video has helped me mentally as I immediately recognised the symptoms as my own. It gave me back some sense of power of a condition I've literally had noooo control over, no answers to. My trigger has always been my menstrual cycle, but this was always seen as severe cramping. I wish I knew sooner but am GRATEFUL TO GOD for getting me this far, and praise the people behind the making of this video. Really gave me hope🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
@StrongMed Hii, this is Leanne Gordon again. I pray you've been well. I know it's been some time since we communicated via a message on your post in regards to my CVS, but wondered if I could get some advice. My son is now 8years old and has been suffering from symptoms since he's been 5 years old, randomly vomting but usually recovering after around 1 - 2 hours. My daughter on the other hand is 4 years old and has just suffered what I'd describe as a full blown episode, vomiting bile constantly without being able to keep anything down. She was hospitalised and put on IV ( drip ) for 4days. The doctors ram all tests but declared they cannot find anything wrong with her. Is there any advice you can give so I may inform the hospital, as she's already vomited again since being home for 1 day. It'd like they are unsure of what steps to take to find the root of the cause for her symptoms
My doctor at mayo clinic said to smoke as much cannabis as I need ,I still suffered greatly so I quit cannabis for2 years and things got twice as bad, went from 170 lbs to 122 pounds
I never heard of this condition but now I know about it I think my friend has it because she gets sick every years five times a year or even 6 times a year
I normally get vomiting before my menstrual period starts, like one week before that for 1 day. and during the first few days of my menstrual. does it consider CVS?
I cannot give you specific, individualized medical advice nor make a medical diagnosis here, but some women with CVS have their symptoms - when they occur - occur at the same point in the menstrual cycle (though not necessarily occurring every cycle).
My cycle is coming after few weeks of not having flare up so the cycle is between 1 or 2 weeks in a month, after that i have to throw up all day all night for like 4-5 days straight followed by fever, headaches, and sore muscle. I was normal before, this had occured because sometimes in about a year ago i took medication to treat depression (anti-psychotic and anti-seizure), but little did i know the side effects so extremely awful that these meds i think destroying my CNS and to think that it will recover is nearly impossible.
Waking up with anxiety followed by throwing up usually 2or 3 times . What the heck is this ? I haven't tried the shower thing yet . Does anyone have any suggestions?
I really want to cry because I felt so alone having this problem

I was diagnosed with cvs about a year ago, my doctor said that it could have been caused because of hormonal changes, stress or anxiety. It started at around the time that I got my first period, when I had just turned 10, however this was also around the time that I had a big test. If you also have cvs, I just want you to know you’re not alone and there are other people, like me, with it.
Dr. Strong, you are by far THE best medical content provider on youtube. No doubt about it. I really appreciate what you’re doing.
Oh yea??? Can I help in other ways?
Just had another episode. It really kicked my ass. I though I was going to die this time. I was really scared.
I'm so sorry to hear that. CVS really sucks. I hope you have doctors who take your condition seriously.
Hey, if you can try it, when I have an attack I found that you can actually prevent yourself from throwing up. I keep water in my mouth, take very very strong mints and drink lots of water. Dry food in the mouth works too. And migraine medicine can help in the beginning by lessening the attack. I usually like don't move and just take sips of water keeping it in my mouth swallowing only when you need too
@@StrongMed Excellent video.

What helps you guys? How do you cope?
Peace!
Has anything helped 😢?
@@keeliesterling2630 I've since made major changes to my diet and sleeping routines. I've definitely seen improvements. I'd advise anyone who suffers from this to research different foods to avoid and exercise more. 😊

What did you do to help
I’ve had this my whole life, only diagnosed 14 years ago… I’m glad to know I’m not alone
My sons CVS was finally SOLVED! 🙏
It’s completely healed now.
Me too.
Hi.
Well said. I couldn’t have said it better. I also have been suffering for 25 years and would do anything for a fix or cure.
VERY true, i found out i cant eat gluten,
thank you so much for bringing light to this awful disease… i finally just got diagnosed with CVS and even though it’s been one of the hardest things i’ve ever had to deal with-it’s just that much easier to cope being able to have a diagnosis from my doctors. i’ve been dealing with this since i was 16 where it would last for a week or so and happen every couple months (2/3 months) cut to me now, turning 22 and getting sick every other week or so for about 4-7 days give or take. i can only sleep and puke away the pain… i can’t move, eat, or do anything and it’s paralyzing. it helps to go to the hospital and get on IV fluids and meds but i can’t even get the energy to get up and go there… hell, i can’t even sit up. a lot more doctors need to become aware of it because for so long i wasn’t given the proper help that i needed bc “i was a kid, kids get sick.” or “i’m making it up” or “i have an eating disorder” like ????? first of all no, but second of all if that were the case then maybe look into it???!! idk CVS honestly just sucks so much…

Best wishes to all of you💛 my email is different than it says here... it is emilybrooke032@gmail.com 🤞🏻🙂
Take care all!!

It’s a shitty condition when undiagnosed. I went through a particularly rough military school while having its onset in my early twenties. I was fortunate enough to have an Air Force doctor do a correct diagnosis and now live mostly symptom free from his prescription.
What prescription, if I may ask?
What prescription?
@@justcallmesatan I'm so sorry. That's awful. I hope it ends soon. *hugs*
The shower hot bath really doesn't work for everybody. Helps as many as it doesn't.
I might be weird - but a hot shower or bath actually increases my anxiety - has anyone else experienced or heard of this?
Yup I like to be out in the cold for some reason just deep breathing cold air makes me feel better
I totally agree, heat is actually one of my triggers. 🙃
Wow. glad light is being brought to this. i struggled with cvs when i was 3-5 years old but i was never diagnosed. i had a 9 year break in symptoms and in the past year i have had severe cvs. my first episode was so painful the er doctor thought i had internal organ damage. i believe my symptoms may have been caused by stress and fasting. i am a wrestler so sometimes i couldn’t eat for a day to lose weight. now after diagnosis and treatment i am much better and i havnt had an episode in months.
Exactly what I’m going through and i wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. shits bad. don’t smoke weed.
@@urthosart haha same. Makes me want to literally die every damn morning

Mine doesn’t go away until I go asleep
Good video otherwise 😊
Edit: I forgot to add that I did stop using it for a month to rule it out and I was hospitalized twice.
When I presented with Nausea and abdominal pain in my bowels I was using MJ to reduce the symptoms. When I mentioned this they would only suggest AHS. It took much frustration for them to recognize my Crohn's disease.
Do the hot showers help?
I can't even imagine being able to get into the shower.
I'm physically unable, I can barely make it to the bathroom!
@@sweetmissypetuniawilson9206 Unfortunately heat is actually a trigger for me, and I also have pots so steam/ showers makes me feel woozy. Honestly I try to get as cold as possible as that’s what usually helps me deal with the pain easier. i had a 20 year old male patient which i referred to a gastroenterology specialist after 6 months of vomiting and diagnosed with cvs. a month later he had another vomiting attack and admitted with appendicitis. after the appendectomy he stopped vomiting...
Was it continues emesis or discontinues as in cvs?
I vomit everyday for the last 20 years of my life. I'm used to it!
I am in shock I’ve been in and out of hospital and no one was able to diagnose me with this
Same here! I feel like relieved to have finally found something that feels like the answer

Having dry foods in your mouth works too like honestly if you have CVS try any of these
I'mma ask my doctor about migraine meds, haven't tried that yet!
Thanks!

Thank you Doctor Eric Strong. I learn new thing. I can’t wait to find next disease have a Vienna criteria since I am a fan of Habsburg Austria :) .
Idk I have been diagnosed with this but my symptoms are different. I go a couple of months without throwing up then throw up every morning for a couple months then stop for a couple months. I was also diagnosed as a child and it never stopped. It also sucks that no one in my life cares bc it has been going on so long.
The differential dx very well explained. Thank you.
Thank U Dr Eric Strong For your valuable content Thank u from bottom of my heart

CVS is different from CHS. Hot showers are not usually used by CVS people, and marajuana is associated with CHS not CVS
Some relevant references (sorry, they may be behind a paywall):
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24792504/
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28400711/
One seemingly erroneous statement- Weed is connected with CHS; no definitive connection with CVS.
A nice, open-access review of the complicated and unclear relationship between CHS and CVS: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/nmo.13606
EDIT: I'll add that I've seen patients with CVS who have sworn that cannabis helps their symptoms - the linked article briefly talks about this contradiction: that cannabis increases the risk of CVS, while also having anecdotal reports that it brings relief. This suggests the heterogeneous nature of the condition, including possible unknown genetic factors that determine how people's body respond to cannabis exposure.

It'd like they are unsure of what steps to take to find the root of the cause for her symptoms
