everything Prince said and you should already know. Create yourself. Make yourself. And if they want to act as promoter/distributor then work a fair deal. most importantly Own your Masters! (I haven't watched the video yet, but these things should be common knowledge by now)
Good advice , but for working musicians I think the biggest problem is the musicians themselves , the vast majority who will do gigs for FREE , for " exposure " . The exposure con is the biggest hustle of all . It's like the rabbit who has a carrot dangling on a stick strapped to his head . The poor rabbit NEVER gets to the carrot and is chasing it until he drops from exhaustion. The landlord won't accept exposure , the landlord wants CASH . I don't see any bartenders working for " exposure " or giving away free beer . " If the gig don't pay , run away " .
Thats because they don't understand how to properly book a show
Never PAY to perform. Only means you paid a higher admission than the crowd did to be there. Build that list, work that list, grow that list. And oh yeah, make good music. Your listeners will basically cause you to learn how to throw your own events. 10,000 hours man…10,000. Let’s get to work Family.
Or they pay to perform 2 songs
Then the venue be filled with a bunch of artist who all paid to perform...maybe their friends and family will be there too.

You are good at explaining the facts, and I really appreciate your efforts and work. So thanks for posting free videos to us that are on a fixed income. I am over 70 and I am trying to catch up on all the songs I wrote over the years but never had the money or ability to finish them as they deserved. For me it isn't about a career so much, but about getting my songs recorded before I die or lose the ability to sing, and play the instruments. You two guys make music nerds everywhere, proud.♥🎖🎖
Make sure you catalog and copyright the songs so you can successfully pass them on.

You are obviously a great teacher, and you have the experience to back up your teaching and advice. Now if I can find someone on TH-cam that knows how to copyright my Cartoons, Comic books, and other Artwork. I was blessed with ability in several creative fields. My little iCon is a small sample of some of my cartoonish artwork.

Otherwise I find myself playing mind games with myself, about how I have to hurry up, and that mindset actually just stresses me out, and defeats my purpose. One day at a time, no matter how old or how young one is.

In the 21st century you still have these young artist running to these record companies like a bunch of damn fools. As a independent record producer and publisher I would rather put my material out myself. People need to understand that these record companies control your image,name, likened and intellectual properties. Oh not to meant the 360 deal contract and ownership of your masters,let's not leave out putting and insurable interest policy on the artist. Now why in the hell would an individual would want to sign up for slavery at that level. First off I encourage all artist to go get educated in accounting and law period. Stop blaming the record labels for your failure to read contracts, the A&R record companies executive is for the interest of the company not the artist.

Y'all also have to cut the BS with this independent sh!t. The music business is an extremely difficult business to thrive in, there's a reason why the vast majority of charting artists are signed, you have to put in a significant amount of money and time to even exist! and we know most indie artists don't have that luxury. A record label gives you leverage and makes things waaaay more easier for artists to be seen out there. Taking the indie route is not for everybody and matter of fact 95% ( and I'm being conservative ) of indie artist will never succeed... for 1 Russ there are a thousand other artist ( some even more talented than him ) who will never see the light.

Great info. What if you don’t take an advance coz you have some savings and a job to pay the bills. Can you realistically use recording companies to do marketing or anything you can’t do yourself whilst doing other things yourself and keeping publishing rights, most royalties and masters??? How much does it cost to record a pop album and have it mixed etc and ready for distribution and then release. Are there options for those with smaller budgets? Can you hire the record company on a fee for service basis when you do some stuff yourself?
