It's always great to see an early 90s Marin resto and rebuild...especially as there aren't many on TH-cam. This is quite a nice example. I'm a collector of early 90s Marins and recently became the second custodian of a Pine Mountain of the same vintage as this. The original only Keith did an amazing job of restoring and rebuilding his pride and joy. Everything about Keith's work oozes quality build and finish, especially the paint...especially the neon orange front end! I love these early 90s Marins...which is why I have so many! Great video! Thanks Mark (and Mike for supplying the frame which started off this project).
Can you give me some advice on buying a marin eldridge grade. It is a meon yelow bike with red paint stripes on it The condition is really good but the sellers is asking 350 euro. Is this a fair price or way over the top? Cheers Bb
Nail Clippers - best thing ever invented for cutting zip ties and leaving nothing sharp to cut yourself on and I'm loving that Cerakote finish - only IMHO thats got to be one of the most perfect frame resprays I have ever seen on a restore. Perfecto. Nice job - well done.
My maths teacher at school had this model, I lusted after it as a 13 year old, plus orange is my favourite colour so this was the one to have. I'm currently helping my friend restore a 90 palisades
Splendid job. The 90s Marins, in my view, were the most stylish mtbs available. They stood out from all the other brands so well, and still do nowadays. I hope you are able to keep the bike and enjoy your efforts. All the best
sorry to be off topic but does anyone know a tool to log back into an instagram account?? I was stupid forgot the password. I would appreciate any help you can give me!
@Alan Jesse i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now. Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Great video thanks! Especially useful as Im just now embarking on my 1991 Pine Mountain refurb! Gotta sort the frame first. A bit too much surface rust and I dont think I can keep the Zolotone paint sadly. Orange forks, stem and bars are also faded but with non faded bits where there has previously been light brackets etc. So interesting to see you went down a full respray route.
Great Video MonkeyShred! I bought my Pine Mountain in the aftermarket for £525 in 1992 and it's still ridable and only had tyres and brakes - a bit like my first Audi A4 1.9 TDI Avant, which went round the world 13 times (mileage equivalent) and outside of routine servicing, only cost me a rear wiper assembly and a pair of rear shocks. Going for a spin on my Marin this afternoon in the Yorkshire forests. Only things I would like to do with it are, stop the rear brake squealing and find a set of original white-walled tyres for it.
It was in a joblot of four bikes a scrap man had picked up, the picture on Facebook marketplace was really bad and I wasted at least 2 days before I realised what it was. Messaged him straight away when I did realise but I missed it by a day. The guy who got it stripped it and it was on eBay the next day, went straight up to £100 then was taken off so I suspect he as offered a lot of money for it. Still have all the pictures but not sure how to post them on here.
Oh no way! I've had a few bikes that have slipped by like that. I think I found a pretty nice GT LTS (although I never confirmed the idenity) and won it for £40 maybe. Asked the seller when I could pick it up and he can me some spiel about selling it to his neighbour the day before. OH. And missed a carbon STS for £100. A frame would cost me 4x that :(
rickychopper I joined Facebook last month for this very reason but because I’m not an “established” user they won’t let me have access to Marketplace! Infuriating, I can only imagine all the titanium the other side of the wall beyond my reach.
Looks great! The paint turned out awesome. Even the Deore shark fin was a nice touch. I have a 92 that I just finished, hopefully I will be able to finish editing the video soon 😂😂😂. Can’t wait for the ride video!
Cerakote and Retro Decals are next level! Such a cool design, always loved those Marin saddles too. Would recommend Autosol and a Dremel to bring those chainset bolts back to a shine. Shark fin too, must have cost a fortune. Always on lookout for those...
Well, after I dug all the parts out to clean them....a day before I planned to film, I noticed those bolts and thought about changing them. They'll only rust again if I polish them :( Shark fin I had lying around actually!
MonkeyShred I spoke too soon on those Shark fins, just got a job lot NOS from Poland! Damn shame I was too impatient to get my Dyna Tech build film uploaded before they arrive.
I very nearly bought one of these the other week, wish i had now, gumtree and shpock are great places to find bargain older bikes, the team marin was the next one up at this time, i think it was the team titanium that was the first bike with xtr a couple of years later
That's the one! I think I looked at a later catalogue for a friend before who has a Indian Fire Trail hidden away and I'm sure they had 3 "Team" variants later on.
Very very nice work. Reminds me of my teens. The only minor comment I would make is the main Marin decals on the frame could have been less small and rounded and more like the original, but I'm nitpicking.
Really nice job, the new finish is superb. I did a Marin restore myself recently, inspired by your work on old retro mtbs. Really interested in those tires ;)
I'll give a proper review of them shortly. Just trying to gather footage and test them in different terrains. Had them pumped right up on the roads today though. Didn't feel much drag at all.
Ermmmm, warm them up, slap them on and hope for the best. I took measurements before but didn't use any guide tape or anything when reapplying. Seem to be pretty straight though!
My first bike was a 1992 Palisades Trail with the fluro green and matte black frame. They all looked so great at the time. Followed it up by upgrading to a 1993 Eldridge Grade colour scheme wasn't as nice though. 😎
Any idea what the max tyre clearance are on these 90s Marins? I'm thinking of getting a 94 Muirwoods and want to put some Maxxis Hookworms on there, reckon they'd fit? Can't find an answer for love nor money online. Lovely restoration btw, that ceracoat turned out lovely =]
That's a specific Kona headset called the Control Centre. Should have a Deore DX headset on it. The Kona ones make good money! 😉 Great headsets! Fantastic build and attention to detail, however the bars, stem and forks were gloss. Other than that super build and Gil is the best for decals. Not trying to be negative, just constructive as early bikes are still fresh in my head.
Ohhhh is that where it's from! I've never seen that style of headset before. It was quite nice to work with! Yeh I would have loved the fluro parts to be gloss but alas the Cerakote isn't available in that yet (or at least at the place I use)
Hi, just got the same frame that I want to repaint. Could you measure the seatpost diameter, it looks like a weird dimension. I suspect it is a 29.4mm or a 29.6mm. Where you got the decals? Have you painted it yourself?
I bought an old marin in great condition at pawn shop. It was repainted so I dont know what model it is to order a rear wheel and cassette. Model number is 24420 on bottom. Does anyone know what year it is and model name
I find one of the best ways to try and research bikes is if it has Shimano parts, look at the two letter date stamp on the back of a component, and then look up the brochure or catalogue for that year and the years around it to see if anything matches
The one time I listen to comments saying use stainless bolts and I get told not to use stainless bolts hahaha. Go figure! They should be ok! They're all lubed up.
I have today. They were pumped up to near max (50ish PSI) for a road commute and I was suprised how fast they rolled tbh! Pretty comfy too even with that high pressure.
The seatpost is a 29.6mm, hard to find those days, found one here: www.internet-bikes.com/en/48398-ergotec-seatpost-patent-296-x-350-mm-aluminum-black/
I remember when they 1st come out + my m8 had one with bullseye cranks with all the best parts, best bike I'd ever seen in the flesh at the time. He never would let me have a ride on it though. Please let me know how it rides once you've restored it. I'd love to know. Ps, as usual lovin ya werk.
as someone who's had tons of problems with rusty bb's from riding in the rain, seeing you slap that bb on in the rain and contaminating your grease with water, that was absolutely cringe inducing. but other than that, that's a beautiful bike to restore.
