    1. Reading the Contract Construction Drawings and Specifications
    A a construction project engineer, you will need to know what information is within the project drawings and specifications. The specifications are essentially the written standards and procedures that you will need to comply with on the construction project. The construction drawings work with the specifications and are supposed to give us as the contractor most of the information we need to build the project. If you are unsure how to read drawings or blueprints, that is okay, I was there too. You'll likely get the hang of it after one job. The drawings and specifications are essentially your bible to the project and what you are held to to build as the contractor.
    2. Field Quality Control
    This to me is one of the most important tasks as a construction project engineer. This will usually mean being outside on the jobsite checking dimensions, elevations, layout, etc. Which means that in order to do proper QC, you need to know your drawings and specs to ensure compliance. Being outside doing QC also shows you how things actually get built and the sequence it takes to get there. Being there to help your subtrades throughout the entire process helps build trust and catch mistakes before you get too far along in the process and make the fix that much harder. Being able to see issues in the field and solve problems is a big part of being a construction engineer.
    3. Submittals and RFIs
    A submittal is a document that is submitted to the designer/consultant that shows the contractors understanding of the drawings and specifications. This could be product data, samples, shop drawings, etc. As the general contractor you will review the subtrade's submittals to ensure conformance, then send it off the design team for their comment. A lot of times I look for constructability issues in the shop drawing process as well, which is why the field background through the QC process is so important to have when you are reviewing paperwork. RFIs or Request for Information are issued when there is something missing or conflicting in the contract drawings and specifications. A lot of times I like to call the design team or have a face to face conversation about RFIs before I send them in so they aren't seeing the problem for the first time on paper.
    4. Estimating and Quantity Tracking
    Though I don't advise trying to start your career in construction in estimating, sometimes you may be put there. You'll likely be put there to do quantity takeoffs like counting the amount of towel bars on the project, or what the cubic yardage of concrete is. When you get into the field and execute the project, you will need to verify estimated quantities in the field and track to make sure you are still on budget.
    5. Technology
    As entry level engineers, we will likely be called upon to handle the newer technological aspects of the project. That could be using new equipment, modeling, and managing the digital documents for the project. Having the background of knowledge of how things actually get built will help you in this process because there is a lot of useless construction technology out there, so you need to make sure you know if it will truly help your project out or not.

Super-green PE here, since March, but I've been a structural steel detailer for 22 years. This is so great man and i would highly recommend your vids to every fresh graduates or interns that comes my way while in my construction engineering career.
    I would like to add a bit also like the importance of understanding baseline schedules or a brief idea about the contract conditions as they play a significant part as well on what/how/when you should execute various works. Trains you of becoming a Project manager in the latter. Content suggestion 👌
    Keep the vids coming and congrats for gaining more subs. You deserved it. 👍

    Love your videos, they give a great preface to the construction itself and the details that many don't go over. I am currently in my 3rd year in engineering and would love to get your advice on what to do during my college time to help me or make me a better project engineering after I graduate. Also if you have time a vid about reading the specs would also be pretty cool.

    Hey Kienen! Just wanted to say. I love these videos and they keep me motivated.
    Im still in school, and recently landed a internship for a smaller GC that mostly does EFIS subcontracting on luxury homes/condos and commercial props.
    I mostly been working as a construction estimator for them (NOT EASY) which has been challenging & great at the same time, I now know what materials cost and how much is being used based on SQFT. 🙂
    it’s been 3 mos. And I enjoy it. I’m never on site. but I am reading tons of Architectural&Structural prints for hours.
    Like you said, it’s kind of ass backwards cause idk how it’s built exactly but I understand what plastic components are needed based on the material being used and how many workers are needed as well as scaffolding and how to bid on the projects. So I’m like a half ass PM.
    What do you think my next step should be after this experience?
    I’m worried cause I haven’t actually seen any building done but bids have been won! So hopefully! I get to see some action soon.

    • @KienenKoga
      @KienenKoga  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you have a great start! Yes, I would suggest you find ways to get into the field, especially on the projects you have bid and won. That's where you'll actually find out if you bid it properly haha. Job site visits and talking with the workers and getting their opinion on the budgets you've given them is invaluable information. Even if it's just a job visit a couple times a week, it'll give you that great visual of the work that's actually happening, tough details that are costing more money, and will help you bid projects a lot better. But overall, very good to hear your start!

    • @KienenKoga
      @KienenKoga  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much Douglas! Estimates are a combination of getting subcontractor quotes and understanding labor rates and quantity of work going to be put in. Basically you see how much of an operation is required for a job (example how much concrete to pour) then relate that to how many labor hours it will take you to put that in place and at what rate.

    I'm just finishing up my sophomore year of Mechanical Engineering and I'm starting to feel like it's not for me. I really don't wanna sit at a desk all day doing CAD/excel. Is it possible to get into construction Engineering with a Mechanical Engineering degree?

    Hello Kienan, I am a project engineer at an A/E construction management firm. I am trying to switch to a general contractor. They are complete opposite, specially when i have no experience in ground up construction, commercial projects, or even big renovations. I am the one who always request for submitals, RFI's, and schedule from the general contractor. I am trying to switch jobs but I am having a difficult time doing so. Do you have any tips?

    Man, you have been so helpful! It would be awesome if you could make a video about project management positions and how they perform about their days. Maybe compare and contrast them to superintendents. As well as declare your pros and cons on someone obtaining Construction Engineering and Management degree rather than a civil engineering degree. That would be awesome if you could, but no pressure to do so. I don't want to sound lazy to get the answers myself, but I haven't seen the most credited guidance lately. I was hoping you have some extra insight and already know a sum of this specific job rank. If not, all your videos are already appreciated. Thanks

    Hi! New to following your channel. Question! I'm assuming that a "construction management engineer" is a job title and can a civil engineering degree will be best to obtain that. Is that correct? If so, you must've taken construction management classes in college? Very intrigued...

      You can get a cm degree too to get into this industry. My curriculum was not exactly tailored to construction so I went into the work pretty fresh

    Would you recommend someone to do a Civil engineering course even if they know they want to be a construction manager or maybe a project manager. A lot of people say it’s better to do Civil degree over the construction management degree and then just get a entry level construction management job. They say it will be easier to do the job with the engineering background and job prospects would be better.
    My question is in real life is this actually true and does it make a big difference or not really? As a Civil degree is harder and has a bunch of modules I’m not that interested in.
    Also how is the market for construction managers / civil engineers in Hawaii ?
    P.s do you have an email I can get in touch with questions?
    Thanks

    • @KienenKoga
      @KienenKoga  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say a civil engineering degree gives you more options on the types of jobs; however getting a CM degree will still just as easily funnel you into being a construction or project manager (entry level of course). I barely use my knowledge from my civil engineering degree, but if I were to leave construction just having that engineering degree opens a lot more doors. Market in Hawaii it good for now, we may see a dip in the next year or so but prospects look good for the years after. If you have an instagram you can DM me @kikoga

    Whats the difference between masters in civil engineering and masters in construction engineering are they both same or not?

    • @KienenKoga
      @KienenKoga  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      the construction will focus more on engineering needed for the build of the project (temporary formwork, shoring, crane, etc.). civil is more broad I would say, but depends on the coursework on the institution you go to.

    • @KienenKoga
      @KienenKoga  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ive honestly never heard of it before in the way the job description notes it online, but it seems like the civil engineer tech is more of an adviser to the civil engineer while a construction manager is an advisor to the developer or owner to the project

      No you will likely need at least 4-6 years in the field as a Project Engineer prior to moving into a Project Manager position. This is an experience based industry and while a CM degree is a great starting point, you can't walk right into a managerial position without some hard earned time in the field.
