If you use NAS make sure you update the firmware on the NAS to make sure that any security issues are patched. This is extremely important if you have this device open to the Internet-facing side

@@theTechNotice I had the same problem with my synology ds220j, apparently the data encription was on and even though the cpu was not fully utilized, it was slowing down transfer speeds. Not quite sure if the same is happening to you. I installed a TS-233 for a friend of mine just last week and speeds through the 1gb port were above 100MB/s, as expected.
Btw both NAS are in raid 1

@@scubartistqnolsy I'm not sure honestly, really depends on your use case. Both NAS reach about 115MB/s while transfering files via 1Gb ethernet, so on that side there is no difference, and I can't say about remote file transfer since I have experience only on the ds220j. In the end both are good, I'm also sure that it is possible to reach much higher speeds with the synology while in remote than what I get (2MB/s on my wifi), for example I noticed that on one of the university wifi I reach about 40MB/s, on another private network it does 20MB/s. But since I mostly sync PDFs I never looked into it. Anyway having a NAS really was a game changer for me, and I would recomand one to pretty much anyone.

I have a much older QNAP with that same USB adapter and I get much higher transfer speeds than you are getting. There are many factors on why your speeds are so low. Things like is your network 2.5G or higher, the ethernet cables. If anything in the network connection is 1G, the speeds you are getting are the fastest you will be able to get. I have a 10G network and my transfer speeds were lower than they should be and it ended up being my ethernet cable even though it was rated at Cat 7, changed to a different cable and my transfer speeds improved.

Hey, so if you’re taking the same default gateway to route to that network (same exit path before being ROUTED TO faster 5G network) it’s not actually transversing the fast network point to point …among other network considerations others have already provided. It’s still going to be limited by the sending node speed even if the receiving end can take 5x as much.

Even fastest hdd only get's to 140-150MB/s you can do CrystalDiskMark tests on drives you have connected to your PC.

Depending on the specific RAID configuration. I think that if you have 2 disks for redundancy, it slows you down instead of speeding you up. If you have 2 disks for speed without redundancy, that does speed you up.

One more quick suggestion: if none of my recommendations in my first reply work, I would finally unplug the 1G port and have only the 5G port active and repeat the tests. There exists a slim possibility the NAS's firmware is defaulting to 1G and you *may* be able to force it to see the 5G if that is the only connection. (also please update NAS firmware to latest version BEFORE attempting these tests).

    • @ronscrazyfamily6654
      @ronscrazyfamily6654 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Running in RAID 0 is another great idea to test; as you are certain to at least theoretically double BOTH your read and write speeds as the drives no longer have to write TWICE as much as they have to on a RAID 1; though as I mentioned, you should theoretically be able to READ twice as fast as you can write on a RAID 1; as it *should* act as a mirror and read from both drives simultaneously.

Can you use a Seagate Ironwolf (or other brands of) NAS hard drive as a standalone archival or backup storage on your PC? I see where people say the inevitable write errors are not managed as well with NAS hard drives versus typical PC hard drives. It seems that the upside to using NAS drives for archival purposes is the endurance rating, but is there a reason I should avoid individual NAS drives for PC storage files?

Speaking as an IT veteran, your bottleneck is possibly the RAID 1 and/or the RAID HARDWARE NAS is spec'd to achieve 1Gb/s; and you're trying to "hack" it to 5Gb/s. I can suggest you try to copy a large file FROM the NAS through the 5G port BACK to your Firecuda 530...and that *should* read from BOTH RAID 1 drives at once; theoretically doubling your speed. In my knowledge as an Oracle / SUN and Microsoft SQL Server admin and developer, an enterprise RAID 1 will write 1/2 as fast as it will read. Disclaimer: you do not have an enterprise class NAS, but certainly worthwhile to take literally just a few minutes to READ FROM the NAS over the 5G back to your PC with the SSD. Let us know how it goes and best of luck!

    Gigabyte Z690 AERO G DDR4
Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 64 GB(2x32)
    Sabrent Rocket 4.0 1 TB(Cache)
    Sabrent Rocket 4.0 500 GB(OS)
Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB (will this work for 4K editing or do I need a 3080?) edit: I just found a 3080 for $100 more than a 306ti...tempting but I don't know if it's necessary
I was going to add a 4TB Baracuda as an archive drive but after seeing this video here I think I will go with a NAS system. Shame it doesn't have a cache drive or a more ram, with only 2 drives a single user could saturate that thing moving data. Also a shame it doesn't use ZFS, some of the higher end models do. I had an old intel NAS back when that for the same money had 4 drives which worked well for me as a single user and that thing topped out at ~100mb/s using raid z1.

I have been wondering what a NAS is and why I would want one for a while. The excellent but often over-my-head TH-cam channel Level1 Techs frequently talks about them but quickly loses me with discussion of different Linux flavours.
I think finally understand the point: File sharing among the half-dozen computers in my house, and a web interface for remote file access.
But waitaminit! I should be able to access my NAS in my house when I am in a different city? Doesn't that mean I need a permanent IP address for my NAS? Is that something I should expect from my ISP? How hard is it to configure that?

I am no QNAP or networking expect, but through research and trial and error I was able to get faster transfer speeds than you with an older QNAP NAS and the same 5G USB adapter. My simplified set is a QNAP switch with 10G and 1G ports. My creator PC has a 10G port. I have both the NAS and the creator PC connected to 10G ports on the switch. I am only using one connection for the creator PC, if it needs an internet connection it gets it through the switch which also has an internet connection. It took me a lot of trail and error, different ports and cables, but this seemed to work the best for me to get higher transfer speeds.
