I still find it baffling that these players are rated 40 overall. That implies that they are 40% of the way to playing perfect basketball. They are almost-half-great. In truth, these players are not even halfway to dressing themselves in the morning. The idea that they could score 40% on any test, by any metric, seems absurd.
To be fair, folks like Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley probably around high 200-300, I think.
when you think about it, having played basketball before in a competitive setting makes you better than someone who has never heard of the game of basketball by about 40% i’d say. maybe the baseline is someone who grew up in siberia, isolated from the outside world, and doesn’t understand the entire concept of basketball

@@NoNameAtAll2 When a player shoots the ball but the ball doesn’t go in the hoop, the act of catching the ball off of the missed shot is a rebound.
An offensive rebound is when the player who shot and the player that made the rebound are on the same team. A defensive rebound is when the player that shot and the player that made the rebound are on different teams.
When I saw Giannis and Jokic on the 40 Overall Warriors' coaching staff, the video went from being really funny to slightly depressing (but even funnier)

I had this really awesome change in Madden 2006. I really disliked LaDanien Tomlinson, and I wanted to screw him over. I once changed his stats to make him bad, but they just cut him instead. So... I bumped up some of his stats, but turned his carrying(likelihood of fumbling) all the way down. Best automated franchise mode ever. Teams always signed him, and then got rid of him the next season. His teams always did terribly.

You know, having read the original Death of Basketball article, it amazes me how much the later version of the game is trying to prevent Jon and non-Jon from replicating Jon’s original experiment. It’s almost like one of the developers read the original and implemented multiple failsafes to stop this very thing from happening.
I regularly reread NBA Y2K. And watching this video, I get the same impression you do. First red flag: inability to adjust ratings to zero. All 40s across the board, really? This will be not as fun. We'll see bad basketball, definitely... but I was video of passes bouncing off faces like Santa's Little Helper. I want little dudes guarding invisible dudes. I want *comically* broken. Not just broken.

@@NGH47 Intangibles in basketball specifically mean basically "good quality of uncertain origin." Like, if someone has good intangibles, that means they tend to get decent results even if on paper they aren't very fast, strong, or accurate. Usually it refers to players who "work hard" in some capacity.
The reason for the old-time names is because they have a very simple naming algorithm for randomly generated players. They just take a list of every in-game player’s first name and last name and randomly assign one of each to each created player. Since there are so many historical teams in the game, a lot of old names tend to pop up
This and Monster Factory makes me suspect that video games have anti-dingus code to prevent you from breaking them too much, and I believe that this is what's in the way of AAA games being true art.
This is easily one of the most creative and interesting things I’ve ever seen anyone do with a sports video game. Bringing your twisted thought-experiments out of the lab and into the light of day in such an entertaining fashion is truly incredible. I felt a very real, visceral disgust as I watched this and the ‘08 Lions videos. Please don’t stop making these.

Had to sit through a long video with many basketball seasons. But the Warriors vs. Spurs with all 5'4 40 overalls was worth it. Loved the 6 second violation because the player was not fast enough to cross the line in 6 seconds.
