  • Thanks to some serious mods from Honda's tuning specialists Mugen, this outrageous one-off version of the hybrid coupe is capable of producing 197bhp and getting to 60mph in around 6.5 seconds. We took Mugen's £150,000 prototype to some twisty Welsh roads to give it a proper thrashing.

    Why is everybody complaining that sport cars are hard?!?! That's the freaking point of a SPORTS SUSPENTION. Who doesn'd like it can always buy a Citroen

      Fun fact.
      The hideously hard "Sport Mode" that firms up suspension and makes it feel more "sporty" actually causes the car to be slower.

      Choppy roads, elevation changes, loads of twisties.
      In other words, most country-roads in europe.
      You don't want an overly hard suspension, because such a setup will be unsettled too easily.

      Top Gear actually had the Stig run some lap-times with cars in both normal and sport-setting. I'd say RAF Dunsfold is fairly close to the road-surfaces you get on normal country roads.

    is everyone here just ignorant? think outside the box, there's a racing class for every car. if you want to say "why wont you buy a real sports car?" then there would be only one race class. appreciate the car for what it is.

      Austin Bables hasport isn't making the wiring harnesses anymore tho unfortunately. But are talking to another company to take over the harness stuff. Or you'll have to run a custom harness with motec dash.

    Long gone are the days of Naturally aspirated VTECs that revs to 9000..... I miss those days, I miss the Honda back then.

      HuskyWarrior 0029 u been huffing paint? K engines still rev high. This is a hybrid that revs to 6500 stock. If you want it to scream drop some money and k swap. Or tune this engine and tune it to rev higher.

    I tuned Hondas for less then 5K and they were WAY better then this...
    When I would put that kind of money into a Honda, I´d expect it to be able to:
    1. Outsprint a Murcielago
    2. Turn twice as good as a Evo X
    3. Looks like it can both
    Not some riced out ECO Hybrid wannebe with
    less Power than a bock standart Civic Typ R!

    I think they should add a 'Mugen' button, that activates the extreme sportiness and the exhaust, switching from a mild 'normal' CR-Z mode. This would increase the price though

    Honda wasted almost 7 years with this car sadly. So much potential behind this car being amazing but they opted with a tiny 1.5 liter hybrid engine. If they offered this car standard with a k series 2.0 or 2.4 engine instead, they'd be selling like hot cakes. You don't even need to turbo or supercharge it and its better than a type r, and you can't even get type r's in the US yet! Sadly i think its because of US regulations and how much room has to be left within the engine bay for safety standards. Ill love my CR-Z until the end though.

    @MagicSeal Then you are misinformed my friend. I'm guessing you've never heard of the i-DTEC then. Honda already has diesel technology and they've been investing in it for a long time in Europe. America has yet to re-embrace diesel and we just aren't smart enough to force companies to use it. It's cleaner, better gas mileage and (the big issue) they can last up to a million miles...that's why they don't like them lol.

    If only Honda gave the people what they really wanted and stopped with the Hybrid propaganda BS.
    A CR-Z with the K24 from the new Si, would yield great performance while maintaining good fuel-mileage.
    It's what 99% of Honda enthusiasts want. And Honda won't give it to them for some stupid reason.
    I don't even own or have ever owned a Honda just for the record.

    @StingRayINC its that price because its a prototype..all prototypes are hugely expensive..the prototype of the gtr was around 700,000 pound..not the price you,d pay in the dealership for the mass produced model lol

    Only people know jack shit about car call this rice. That said still not impressed with the 6k5 rpm redline. I know it's because the engine was design for the CVT gearbox to cope but should have just swapped a 1.8l/2.0l engine roughly at 140-160PS, sportier suspension and call it a day.

    wanna know something funny...my rx8 with a smaller naturally aspirated engine gets the same mpg when im just cruising around as this thing does flat out on some b roads ): good thing i could care less about its mpg :)

    people stop ur bitching about hybrids....theyre the future, think how many cars now come out wirh a hybrid version of some sort...gas is near 4 bucks a pop and diesel is well over that, and it wont go back down in price thats a guarantee. its nice to see a hybrid that DOESNT look like a vanilla econobox. if u think this car cant produce power google up bisimoto cr-z to find yourself a 500 hp cr-z. think im joking? look it up, theres a few you tube vids floating around...

    I also agree that the future is hydrogen power cell. But diesel engines has just reached its peak - noisy, heavy, no fun to drive as gasoline engines - while the next hybrid generation is coming with plug in, better storage batteries and much much better fuel economy, at least for the next 20 years we will see them replacing the market. And i know there's diesel hybrids too.
    At city hybrids are more economical, diesels are more in the highway.

    @CarvalhoCaldeira No, hybrids are a feel good trap. You use about as much gas as the TDIs do...only with extra damage to the earth that those battery packs inflict. The real future is in hydrogen, but TDI will do a much better job of holding us over then a hybrid. Oh yeah diesel engine can run on used corn oil to boot. Besides which...you have any idea how good of a gas mileage a 2200(what the CRZ would be sans hybrid system) lb chassis mated to the modern k20 would get?!?

    @Isurus777 yes it is the r&d testing, custom fabrication of parts, carbon fiber, engine rebuild, engineering costs all add up prototype cars always are very expensive then after the initial r&d is done the only cost are the parts that is why if this car goes on sale it wont cost 150k but rather the sum of the original car+new parts+p rofit to offset the initial development. My friend's father was given an nsx and 500k by honda a few years back to make a prototype with 600hp

    @Ayrton4everrrU cant compare 1.5L with 2.0L i mean L15A VS K20A its the same system which is I VTEC but the different is that the CRZ challenge cars which is on the same category of it means Suzuki swift,Nissan tida,toyota yaris,......!! A lot of cars u cant put ur integra & challeng this small VTEC..take ur integra in the circuit VS NA2 NSX-R & let me know if ur car is faster than this car or not N then talk about CRZ or JAZZ or FIT..specially when u will understand the Power Of Dreams Nonsense

    Honda should make a naughtier version ... Mugen shouldn't.
    While the IMA system is good, Honda is grossly overestimating it's potential in sporty vehicles. Where VW (for example) have gone for the advanced turbo option, getting very similar mpg's from bigger engines that have to work less, Honda went for the underpowered option which not only means you have to murder the engine to go fast-ish but also that Honda has taken the tuning potential and fun out, thus missing out on a big market share.

    Ok this not something we expect form Honda as they can do better take the old Civic TypeR and by the old one I I mean the one that looked less cool but did everything better. This Honda is kind of like that not as good as the standard model which was ok for everyday people. The new sportier versions is well rubbish on every level it does not even make a pleasant noise. If they put this into production they better improve it a lot.

    I rate it right up there with a "Pet Rock" for being useless. Mugen is laughable for trying to sport up a wimpy Hybrid in the first place. And their exhaust tip looks like left over parts from an RX-8. Impress me and do away with the hybrid bullshit and put a real engine in it. If it's going to sound like a pissed off hornet let's see it sting like one too. Crush this shit and start over!

    lololol my 97 buick park avenue fully loaded most comfortable car ever 3900 pounds hits 60 in 6 seconds. NO compromise. Sofa on wheels and still gets 37mpg on highway. sorry honda you lose thats why you only sell what 6-8% and they put $10k into it to make it hit 6.5 to 60 lololol laugh keep it stock its an amazing mpg car

    Meh.... should have came out like this in the first place. Not impressed one bit. But I won't lie either Honda.... its a decent looking hatchback (STANDARD VERSION) not this thing. Just get 85% of the performance from this Mugen into the standard and everyone will be happy as long as its at a reasonable price.

    Why even mention 20mpgs. They were trashing it all the time, that consumption is hardly any reference. Every car would do awful if you keep pushing it. Its just misleading...
    Other than that I think the conclusion is on the spot, too loud and hard but in general an excellent idea.

    Why not just put the CR-Z + Mugen mods $ into a decent European sports car and be done with it?
    Probably cheaper (even after production version comes out) and you're going to end up with a much better car that doesn't sound obnoxious.

    why Honda don't place the electric motor in the back? is a 2 sitter after all. Maybe when the front wheels turn the electric motor sends more torque to the rear wheel that needs it, just for a future (si) just saying.

    buy a quality german car, the GTI, 6.3 seconds to 60, 200 hp turbo and luxurious interior, plus it gets about 30 mpg on the highway- oh, and it is not 150 fuckin K!
